3 GUSTAVUS MEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES SETTING THE SCENE The Gustavus men s basketball team will be playing in their second contest of the season on Saturday. The Gusties dropped their season opener to NAIA opponent Mayville State on Saturday by a score of The Gusties will put their 0-1 record up against the Eagles of Northwestern who started the season 2-0. The game will begin at 7 p.m. THE SERIES Saturday s game marks the 10th meeting between Gustavus and Northwester (Minn.) on the hardwood, with the Gusties holding a 8-1 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams previously met in St. Paul, Minn. Nov. 14, 2015, with UNW prevailing with a victory. SCOUTING THE EAGLES Northwestern comes into the contest having last defeated Hamline on Thursday by a score of in overtime. The Eagles are led offensively by Anderson Bazile Jr. who is averaging 21 points on the season who is shooting 52.0 percent on the season and averaging five rebounds per contest. Michael Moore is second in scoring as he is averaging 13.5 points per game and he has done his damage from the three-point line making six of 14 attempts from beyond the arc. Tanner Youngberg has been an all-around threat this season for Northwester as he is averaging 12.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. LAST TIME OUT In their season opener versus Mayville State the Gusties jumped out to an early lead on the Comets thanks to eight early points from Vannis Smith (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill.). Mayville State battled back though and evened the score at 21 apiece before Spencer Tollefson (Sr., New Richland, Minn.) scored two of his 11 points on the night to give the Gusties a lead. The lead was the last lead the Gusties saw of the night as the Comets went on a 9-0 run that put them up Gustavus and Mayville State battled back and forth for the rest of the first half and the Comets went into halftime with a lead. The second half was all Comets as they outscored the Gusties by a margin to help them take home the 25-point victory. Field goal percentage proved to be a big factor as the Gusties shot (42%) from the field while the Comets shot (59%). In the contest, the Gusties were led offensively by Smith who tallied 13 points on 5-9 shooting. Nolan Malo (Fy., Owatonna, Minn.) played solid in his collegiate debut notching nine points to go along with a team-leading six rebounds. 5 HEAD COACH MARK HANSON Mark Hanson is in his 29th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men s basketball program for the season. During his time as head coach, Hanson has directed his teams to 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the season. In the season, Hanson earned his 400th career victory with an win over Saint Mary s on Gus Young Court. He became the 65th coach in NCAA Division III history, and 31st active coach, to reach the 400-win milestone. Research indicated that Hanson was the 14th fastest coach to reach 400 victories in Division III history, and became just the sixth coach from the MIAC to reach the 400-win plateau. Hanson, who has compiled a overall record at Gustavus prior to the season, including a record in the MIAC, has won seven MIAC Championships, and has been named MIAC Coach of the Year eight times. He has helped guide Gustavus to the MIAC Playoffs 21 times, reaching the finals 14 years and winning the MIAC Playoff Championship on seven occasions. His teams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament six times and the Elite Eight three times. Hanson has coached 31 players who have garnered 51 All-Conference honors, four MIAC Players of the Year, eight players who have received 13 all-region honors, and three All-Americans. In addition, Hanson has coached two Jostens Award Finalists (Trevor Wittwer, 2008; Marc Newell, 1999), which recognizes the top Division III men s basketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement. Hanson is a 1983 Gustavus graduate and the basketball program s all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points. He was a two-time NAIA All-America and GTE Academic All-America selection, a threetime Gustie MVP and a four-time All-MIAC selection. A long-time outdoor enthusiast, Hanson earned his master s degree in experiential education at Mankato State University and teaches outdoor education classes in the health and exercise science department. He is also the outdoor program director at the college. Hanson, a native of Dodge Center, Minnesota, lives in St. Peter and has two children, Hans and Annika.
