WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SPARTANS Michigan State gymnastics hits the road Saturday to face in-state foe and No. 7-ranked Michigan in a dual meet slated to begin at 4 p.m. in the Crisler Center. The meet will be broadcast live on BTN Plus. Live results will also be available for Saturday s meet and can be found at msuspartans.com. LAST TIME OUT... The Spartans competed in the third annual Tumbles and Takedowns event alongside the MSU wrestling team, where the gymnastics team posted a season-best team score of , but fell by five-hundredths of a point to visiting Penn State ( ). The Spartans opened on vault, posting a team score of Freshman Isabelle Wittebort made her Spartan debut in the event, followed by the senior Jaranowski who posted the first of her two-straight career bests with a The remainder of MSU s rotation all posted 9.7 or better, led by a thirdplace finish by Michelina Lupinetti, who had a personal-best in the event. Anna Gamelo was sixth with a 9.750, followed by Mitchell (9.850), and Roya Shirley (9.700). Spartan freshman Anne Maxim led the squad with a 9.90 to establish a new personal best and a third-place finish, and classmate Mitchell (9.85, fifth) also had a new personal-best. Junior Jessica Ling (9.775), Hailee Westney (9.75) and Jaranowki (9.725) rounded out the Spartan rotation, with Jaranowski posting a second-straight career best on the day. Lauren Bridgens and Sabrina Garcia shared the event title for Penn State with identical scores, as PSU scored a on the apparatus. The Spartan momentum carried over onto the beam with another season best for the squad, which posted a , besting their guests as PSU posted a The event was anchored by a career-best 9.90 by Westney, who took top honors on the apparatus for the Spartans. Senior Victoria Huehn (9.775) was fourth overall, followed by Lupinetti (9.725), Shirley (9.725) and junior Molly Hoerner O Malley (9.625). Tsang took the floor title for Penn State, but the Spartans captured the next three spots and five of the next six. Mitchell led the way for MSU with a to establish a new best, followed by a for junior Drew Hendershot and a personal-best 9.85 for Shirley. Brittni Chappell and freshman Tristan Brown gave MSU a strong start on floor with a pair of scores. MSU scored a on the floor on the afternoon, edging Penn State (49.100). Shirley took third in the all-around for the Spartans, scoring a behind Tsang (39.475) and Sabrina Garcia (39.300). Mitchell scored a to finish fourth. SPARTAN NOTES... The Green and White improved its season-high score for the fourth consecutive meet, topping 195 for the second time this season, by tallying a The previous season high was set in the quad meet against Rutgers, Pitt and Eastern Michigan on Jan. 27. The Spartans currently rank 40th in the Road to Nationals rankings, moving up three spots from last week s ranking. MSU is 24th in the nation on bars, 26th on floor, 48th on beam and 49th on vault. Mitchell took the all-around title for the second time in three meets on Saturday, Jan. 27, tallying a seasonhigh in the event. Senior Hailee Westney has won uneven bars competition three out of five meets this season. The Milton, Ontario native took the event against Bowling Green (1/5, 9.850), against Iowa (1/13, 9.875), and in the quad against Pitt, Eastern Michigan and Rutgers (1/27, 9.875). MSU holds a season record of and is in the Big Ten. MSU welcomes seven freshmen to this year s squad in Ashley Beatty, Isabelle Wittebort, Lea Mitchell, Madison McHale, Anne Maxim, Michelina Lupinetti and Tristan Brown. Along with the gymnastics team, the men s hockey team and the wrestling team are also competing against Michigan this weekend. WOLVERINE NOTES... Michigan ranks No. 7 in the Road to Nationals rankings and is the highest ranking opponent the Spartans have faced this season. The Wolverines strongest event comes on the uneven bars where they sit at fifth in the nation. UM ranks 10th on both vault and beam and is 24th on floor. UM currently sits third in the conference with an overall record of and a Big Ten record of Michigan is coached by Bev Plocki who is in her 29th season at the helm of the Wolverines program. QUOTABLE WITH COACH ROWE... Michigan is a powerhouse; they always are. They ve got a really, really strong program and always have, said head coach Mike Rowe. It s fun to go there because it raises us to a different level. We always like to compete against high-caliber teams. We ve continued to hone in on details this week, being consistent in carrying the corrections over day-to-day. Sophomore Gabriella Douglas and freshman Lea Mitchell were named as the Spartans 2018 Gymnasts to Watch in the Big Ten, while the team was picked to finish eighth in the conference.
