M NEED TO KNOW Duke comes into Sunday s contest having won its last two games (3-1 vs. Xavier, 2-0 vs. Bucknell). Chelsea Burns netted her second game-winning goal on Friday while Imani Dorsey tacked on her second score of the season to pace the Blue Devils 2-0 shutout of the Bison. The Blue Devils returns 10 starters and 24 total letterwinners from a 2016 squad that reached the NCAA quarterfinals last season. Among those returnees are All-ACC honorees Ella Stevens (team-high 10 goals) and Imani Dorsey (7 goals), as well as Taylor Racioppi (11 points in 11 matches) and EJ Proctor (10 solo shutouts). Head coach Robbie Church enters his 17th season at the helm of the Duke women s soccer program and is looking to make his 15th NCAA Tournament appearance in that time and capture his first NCAA Championship. In those 15 appearances, Church has made seven trips to the quarterfinals, including two national finalist showings (2011 & 2015). Duke welcomes one of the top recruiting classes in the nation to the field this season, as Church s 2017 class finished with a No. 6 ranking from TopDrawerSoccer. In their lone tune-up match of the preseason, the Blue Devils defeated Clemson, 2-1. Chelsea Burns and Racioppi each tallied a goal in the early stages of the road victory. After a vote from the league coaches, Duke was selected to finish third in the league this season, with Florida State picked No. 1 and North Carolina No. 2. Redshirt senior Rebecca Quinn pulled in Preseason All-ACC Team honors as well, her second-career conference honor (All-ACC Third Team ).

Old Dominion finished at No A Look At Old Dominion... Old Dominion enters Sunday s match coming off its first defeat, dropping a 3-1 decision at VCU on Friday. ODU is on the year, with wins against George Mason and Albany on opening weekend. Head Coach Robbie Church 17th Season at Duke Riding 29 victories over the last two seasons, including a second NCAA College Cup appearance over the last six years, head coach Robbie Church enters his 17th campaign with the Blue Devils. Church returns 10 starters, 24 letterwinners and welcomes the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation in 2017, looking to continue the success Duke has had over the last 14 years with 179 wins, 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and two trips to the NCAA College Cup in 2011 and Throughout his 31 years as a college head coach, Church has amassed a record of He was recognized as the Carolinas Conference and NAIA Coach of the Year in 1989, the NSCAA/adidas South Region Coach of the Year in 2004, the Conference USA Coach of the Year in 1997, the Soccer America National Coach of the Year in 2011, the Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2011 and the ACC Coach of the Year in In addition, Church was the NAIA South Region Coach of the Year in 1988 and He was also tabbed the NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year in 1988 and NAIA District 25 Coach of the Year in Church and his wife, the former Linda Atkins, have two children, Ashley and Kyle. 5 The Series with Bucknell... Sunday will mark the third meeting between Duke and ODU and the first in Norfolk, Va. It will also be the first time Duke has faced ODU in the Robbie Church era. The two squads last met in 2001, when the Blue Devils took a 3-1 decision. The first meeting came a year prior, when Duke defeated ODU, 2-1. Leading The Blue Devils Points: Imani Dorsey, 5 Goals: Chelsea Burns & Imani Dorsey, 2 Assists: Taylor Racioppi, 2 Shots: Taylor Racioppi, 15 Shots On Goal: Taylor Racioppi & Imani Dorsey, 6 Game-Winning Goals: Chelsea Burns, 2 Burns Nets The GWG (Again) For the second time in as many matches, a Chelsea Burns PK conversion was the difference. Burns penalty kick at the end of the first half gave the Blue Devils all they needed, as Duke went on to a 2-0 victory against Bucknell for its second-straight win. Dorsey s Sunday Goal Named A Top Play In the final seconds of Sunday s 3-1 victory against Xavier, senior Imani Dorsey took possession on the Duke half of the field and made a run to the left side of the box, finishing with a beautiful shot over the goalie to give the Blue Devils their third goal. That play was named one of NCAA Soccer s top plays from opening weekend, which they announced Tuesday morning on social media. Burns Goal The Difference On Sunday Thanks to Ella Stevens drawing a foul in the box during the second half of Sunday s win against Xavier, junior Chelsea Burns was able to score the third goal of her career and first since the 2015 season. The junior also tallied a goal in Duke s 2-1 preseason victory at Clemson earlier this month. It also marks the second game-winning goal in her three years as a Blue Devil, putting her one away from cracking Duke s career top 10 list. First Start, First Victory Redshirt freshman Brooke Heinsohn made her the first start of her collegiate career on Sunday and picked up a win in the process. The Blue Devil defense was key in that victory, as they only allowed two shots all game (one goal, one save). Revisiting 2016 Last season saw the Blue Devils reach the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons, while advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals or better for the fifth time in the last six years. Most of the defense that posted 11 shutouts last year comes back for the 2017 campaign. The Blue Devil defense allowed just 16 goals over 23 games, a 0.63 goals against average that finished fourth in the ACC and 20th in the nation. That average also finished as the fourth-best average in school history. Offensively, Duke reeled off 47 goals, good for second in the league and 20th nationally. The Blue Devils also paced the ACC and stood 11th in the country with 150 points, while their 6.52 points per game clip was second in the conference and 16th in the NCAA. A bulk of that firepower returns for the 2017 season, including 2016 All-ACC selections Ella Stevens (10 goals) and Imani Dorsey (7 goals), as well as Taylor Racioppi (11 points in 11 matches). Stevens returns after a freshman season that saw her tally a team-high 10 goals, including an ACC-high five game-winning scores (tied for fifth in Duke record book). EJ Proctor (2015 NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Defense) led the Duke defensive charge last year, as her 10 solo shutouts placed third in the conference and 17th in the nation. Key in producing those shutouts was her scorching goals against average (4th ACC, 22nd NCAA). Looking Back at 2016 NCAA Tournament Run... Duke advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship last year behind a 3-0 win against Charlotte, a 3-1 victory versus Illinois State and a 1-0 win against Northwestern. It marked the third time in history the Blue Devils posted three or more goals in the opening rounds of the tournament. Toni Payne was on fire with three goals and two assists for eight points, while Ella Stevens notched two goals and two assists for six points. Four different Blue Devils scored over the tournament run, while Duke totaled five of its seven goals in the second half. Duke allowed only seven shots over the first three games of the 2016 NCAA Tournament, which is the fewest allowed by a Blue Devil defense to start a tournament. It is the only time Duke has held three consecutive tournament opponents to three or fewer shots. Starters Returning A number of familiar faces from the 2016 season return this year, as head coach Robbie Church brings back 10 starters and 24 total letterwinners. The 10 returning starters include: Sr. M/F Imani Dorsey (22 starts, 7 goals, 7 assists, All-ACC) RSr. D Rebecca Quinn (Redshirted 2016; Canadian Olympian) Sr. M Ashton Miller (20 starts, 3 goals, 3 assists) Sr. D Morgan Reid (18 starts, 11 shutouts on defense) Jr. M Taylor Racioppi (11 starts, 3 goals, 5 assists, injured in 2016) Jr. F Kayla McCoy (7 starts, 4 goals, injured in 2016) So. M/F Ella Stevens (17 starts, team-high 10 goals, All-ACC) So. M Olivia Erlbeck (19 starts, 1 goal, 5 assists) Sr. GK EJ Proctor (23 starts, 10 shutouts) Sr. D Schuyler DeBree (23 starts, 11 shutouts on defense) Other returning letterwinners include: Casey Martinez, Mia Gyau, Mary Love Taylor, Lexi Magliarditi, Malinda Allen, Kat McDonald, Anna Munro, Emma Carlson, Mackenzie Coles and Emily Wilson. Newcomers Arrive For 2017 Season With the arrival of preseason also comes the arrival of the new crop of Blue Devils, as eight new freshmen began their Duke careers. The 2017 class continued head coach Robbie Church s dominance on the recruiting trail, as the class finished ranked sixth in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Along with the freshmen, redshirt freshman keeper Brooke Heinsohn will debut, as she missed the 2016 campaign while playing with the U.S. U-20 women s national team. 6 Duke Earns No. 12 Ranking In United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll The Blue Devils were tabbed No. 12 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25 released earlier this month. The USC was formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). With the listing, Duke has now been preseason ranked in the top 20 nationally for the fifth time and the top 15 for the fourth time over the last six seasons. West Virginia, who the Blue Devils will face on Friday, Sept. 8 in Morgantown, was selected No. 1 overall, while Stanford, Southern California, South Carolina, Georgetown, North Carolina, Florida, BYU, UCLA and Auburn round out the top 10. A total of six ACC squads were in the top 25 North Carolina (6), Virginia (11), Duke (12), Clemson (13), Florida State (15) and Notre Dame (18). Blue Devils Tabbed 13th In Soccer America Top 25 Duke also earned a top 15 ranking in the Soccer America poll, placing 13th in the nation. The listing gives the Blue Devils a Soccer America preseason ranking of top 15 or better in six of the last seven years. Stanford earned the top spot in the poll, while West Virginia was selected second overall. Penn State, UCLA, Florida State, Georgetown, South Carolina, Southern Cal, Florida and North Carolina round out the top 10. A total of six ACC squads earned a spot in the top 25 Florida State (5), North Carolina (10), Duke (13), Virginia (14), Notre Dame (16) and Clemson (18). Quinn Tabbed Preseason All-ACC, Duke Picked 3rd In League Redshirt senior Rebecca Quinn reeled in Preseason All-ACC honors earlier this month, as the Blue Devil s defensive star returns to the field after a 2016 season that saw her earn bronze with Team Canada at the Rio Olympics and then fall victim to injury throughout most of the DWS season. The conference honor is the second of her career, as she was named All-ACC Third Team following her junior season in As a team, Duke received one first-place vote and was selected No. 3 overall for the second-straight season. That ties last year for the second-highest preseason ranking since 2012 when the Blue Devils were tabbed No. 1 by league coaches. Gibbons Closing In On NCAA Woman of the Year award Former Blue Devil standout Christina Gibbons moved another step closer to the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year award earlier in August, as she was named one of the ACC s two nominations for the award. A former NSCAA First Team All-American, Gibbons joins 144 other conference nominees across all three NCAA divisions. She will now await the selection of the top 30 honorees 10 from each division made by the selection committee later this fall. From there, the top 30 will be paired down to three from each division in September, with the overall winner announced Oct. 22 in Indianapolis. The Last Time...
