Spokane came away with a 3-1 win over the T-Birds on the road back on October 11. Goaltender Dawson Weatherill was outstanding, earning 1 st Star honors with a 44-save performance, including a perfect 19-for-19 in the third period. Kailer Yamamoto, Pavel Kousal and Curtis Miske scored for the Chiefs while Scott Eansor scored for Seattle. The Chiefs have earned a point in their last seven games, reaching overtime in the last four. They had a three-game winning streak broken by three-straight overtime losses before finally getting the monkey off their back on Saturday with a 3-2 OT win over division-leading Everett. Kailer Yamamoto was spectacular, scoring twice and adding an assist for the Chiefs, including his 15 th goal of the season to win it in the 3-on-3 extra frame. Markson Bechtold, in his first game back from injury, scored once and added an assist while defenseman Ty Smith, in his first game back from the U-17 World Hockey Challenge, racked up two helpers. Spokane set a franchise record with zero penalty minutes incurred. Tonight marks the fourth of six-straight home games for Spokane and nine overall during the month of November. The Chiefs venture outside of the friendly confines of Spokane Arena just once this month, on the 23 rd as they visit Kamloops. Spokane went against Seattle last season, including wins in all four home games. The Yamamoto brothers were a handful for the Thunderbirds in the season series, combining for three goals and nine assists in the eight contests, while Hudson Elynuik chipped in a goal and four assists. The Chiefs last loss to Seattle inside Spokane Arena came back on March 20, It s been a tale of two teams this year for the Chiefs; in their 7 wins, they have outscored their opponent 29-12, but in their 11 losses, they ve been outscored Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are when putting less than 30 shots on goal, but only when they get 30 or more pucks through to the opposing goaltender. 3 TAKE NOTICE Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace to begin his draft year. The third-year forward has 29 points (15G- 14A; 4 th WHL) in 18 games to start the season, including 8G & 5A on his current 7-game point streak. He earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31. He has a team-leading 10 points during power plays and has been blanked from the stat sheet just three times. With a late Sept. birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments with Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42 goals and 86 assists) in his first two seasons with the Chiefs (125 games). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future first round pick, most recently Sportsnet s updated rankings with him at 14 th overall. CLEAN SHEET The Chiefs set a franchise record unlikely to be broken on Saturday, Nov. 12 vs. Everett as they incurred zero penalty minutes. The previous record (2) had been reached twice previously. WISH UPON A STAR F Tanner Wishnowski, since being acquired by the Chiefs from Kelowna on Oct. 17, has been a valuable addition, scoring a point in 5 of his first 10 games (2G, 5A). He posted 2 assists in his first game as a Chief. COOL AND COLLECTED Rookie defenseman and former first overall pick Ty Smith came into Spokane with high expectations and hasn t disappointed. The 16-year-old has 9 points (1G, 8A) in 12 GP, good for 13 th among WHL rookies. He picked up two assists on Nov. 12 in his first game back from the World U-17 Hockey Challenge. POWER REVERSAL The Chiefs power play, after starting the season with 9 goals in their first 24 chances, has hit a slump, scoring only 5 goals in their last 45, including 1 over the last 5 games (20 PPs). The penalty kill bounced back from a rough start to begin the year but has recently returned to bad habits, allowing 7 goals over the last five games (17 PKs). BIG BROTHER The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 10 assists in 18 games including 5 power play helpers. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year s Chiefs squad with 217 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just once this season, with one of the two recording at least a point in 17 of 18 games. YOUTH MOVEMENT The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season; 17 players born in 1998 or later, including seven 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds. Nine of the 17 are WHL rookies. A WHL rookie has scored a goal for the Chiefs in 3 of their last 7 home games. BLACK & WHITE Three Chiefs D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack were named by Hockey Canada to the upcoming 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack are on Canada Team Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group. Black went on to earn silver as Smith and Zummack partnered up for their only goal in a 2-1 loss to Sweden. Morrisseau and Canada White fell in the bronze medal game to Russia. ROOKIE STANDS TALL Rookie goaltender Dawson Weatherill made his first appearance as a Chief in relief on Oct. 7 vs. Lethbridge, jumping in at the 7:30 of the second period and was perfect to close out the game. He made his first start as a Chief the following night against the Victoria Royals, making 31 saves on 34 shots faced, then stone-walled the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent on Oct. 11 with 44 saves on his way to 1 st Star honors in a 3-1 win. He ranks 14 th in GAA (2.82). THEY RE WATCHING The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting s preliminary Players to Watch list, as announced on Oct. 4. Kailer Yamamoto earned an A rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a B (2 nd -3 rd ) while three players Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal & Jake McGrew earned C scores. HIGHWAY TO HELGESEN Third-year defenseman Tyson Helgesen was named the Chiefs team captain in a pre-game ceremony on October 1. He takes over for two-year leader Jason Fram. Helgesen scored the game-winning goal in his first game wearing the C ; a 5-2 win over Tri-City. PREMIER PROSPECTS Three Chiefs prospects all forwards competed for their respective provincial teams at the 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Carter Chorney (2 nd Rd, 39 th Overall in 2016 WHL Bantam Draft) scored two points for Alberta, including the GWG in OT of the championship game, Ethan Leyh (8 th, 160 th ) racked up 3G & 4A for BC and Cordel Larson (9 th, 186 th ) represented Team Saskatchewan. HURRICANE HUDSON Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74 th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik s father Pat was the 8 th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games.

4 NEW ERA Long-time Spokane GM Tim Speltz announced on August 16 that he had accepted a job with the NHL s Toronto Maple Leafs and would step down from his position with the Chiefs. Originally hired in 1990, Speltz reigned over a 26-year run of success rivaled by very few in the WHL, including 961 regular season wins, 23 playoff appearances, 142 playoff wins, seven trips to the Western Conference Finals, four to the WHL Finals, two WHL Championships and two Memorial Cup Championships. Speltz is now the Director of Western Area Scouting for the Leafs, but retains his ownership stake in the Chiefs and maintain his home in Spokane. HEY MR. CARTER... Scott Carter was announced as the Chiefs new GM on Sept. 8. A Penticton, B.C. native, Carter boasts 28+ years of experience as a hockey scout, business manager and entrepreneur. He was an NHL regional scout from , President & GM of the Penticton Vees from , BCHL Executive of the Year in 2005, co-founder of the BCHHF in 1991, co-founder of the WPHL in 1994 and has been a full partner in Vaughn Custom Sports since NATIONAL NODS The Spokane Chiefs had 6 players recognized with invitations to national team camps over the summer. Four players D Ty Smith, D Matt Leduc, F Eli Zummack and F Koby Morrisseau were invited to Hockey Canada s U17 camp. Jaret Anderson-Dolan went to Canada s U18 camp. Kailer Yamamoto competed at USA Hockey s National Junior Evaluation Camp with aspirations to make this winter s Team USA for the IIHF World Junior Championship, then joined Team USA at the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22 (he recorded 2A & a +1). BENCH BOSS Don Nachbaur returns to the Chiefs for his 7 th season as head coach having recently signed an extension through the season. The WHL veteran ranks 1 st in franchise history in career wins (241) and eclipsed Mike Babcock this season for the all-time lead in career games coached for the Chiefs (441). Entering the season, his.552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2 nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (672). He is also the winningest coach in Tri-City Americans history w/ 235. CZECH THEM OUT The Chiefs drafted Czech teammates Ondrej Najman and Pavel Kousal with the 22 nd and 82 nd picks, respectively, in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Najman scored 18 goals and 44 points in 38 games, including four multi-goal performances, and added three goals and three assists in five games with the Czechs at the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. Kousal racked up 20 goals and 23 assists in the same 38 games, including a stretch in which he scored a point in 11 of 12 games. He recorded three assists with the Czechs at the U18 Championship. FAMILY AFFAIR D Jake Toporowski has family ties to Spokane. The second-year defenseman s father, Kerry Toporowski, played for the Chiefs from , racking up 889 PIM (2 nd in franchise history) including a single-season record 505 in Jake s younger brother Luke, who projects as a power forward, continued the tradition as the Chiefs 1 st round (8 th overall) selection in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. Barzal Back From The Isle Center Mathew Barzal has been returned to the T-Birds from the New York Islanders. Barzal made his season debut November 12 in a 5-3 win at the Vancouver Giants. He had an assist on the T-Birds first goal of the game. Barzal played in two games with the Islanders and did not register a point. Barzal was selected by the Islanders in the first round, 16th overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft. Barzal had 88 points on 27 goals and 61 assists in 58 games last season. In three seasons with the T-Birds Barzal has played in 161 games and has 53 goals and 146 assists for 199 points. Streaking Birds Ryan Gropp has an eight-game point streak with two goals and seven assists in the last eight games. Moilanen played 38 games last season with the Jokerit U-20 team in Finland. He had 21 goals and 14 assists for 35 points with 20 penalty minutes. Moilanen was a member of the gold medal winning Finnish team at the U-18 World Championship in April. He played in seven games at the tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and had an assist.
