Arizona State and Arizona also are unranked. SCOUTING ASU The Sun Devils are overall and opened Pac-12 play with a 3-0 loss to Stanford last week. Devin Marshall leads ASU in scoring with six goals, and goalkeeper Chandler Morris has made 23 saves with 13 goals against. Kevin Boyd is in his sixth season as head coach at ASU, which went overall last season and was in Pac-12 play. USC is 12-4 all-time against ASU after a 2-1 overtime win last season at McAlister Field. USC lost 3-0 in its 2010 trip to Tempe. SCOUTING ARIZONA The Wildcats enter the week overall and in Pac-12 play after beating Cal 2-1 last week in the conference opener before losing 2-1 to Pacific in a nonconference match. Jazmin Ponce leads Arizona in scoring with six goals, and goalkeeper Abby Kaufman has made 45 saves with 10 goals against. Lisa Oyen is in her third season as head coach at Arizona, which went overall and in Pac-12 play last year. USC is all-time against Arizona with a seven-game unbeaten streak. USC has won the past five meetings, including a 5-0 win in Tucson in 2010 and a 1-0 win last season at McAlister Field. USC and Arizona tied 0-0 in 2006, and the Wildcats last win over USC was a 3-0 decision in 2004 in Tucson. LAST WEEK USC got the best of both worlds in its Pac-12 opener at McAlister Field last week. Not only did the Women of Troy receive more offensive heroics from senior Samantha Johnson, who slotted the winner in the 100th minute of play, the USC defense secured its first shutout of the year in the 1-0 win over visiting Washington, which took just its second loss of the year. A flurry of USC looks on goal in the waning minutes of regulation came to naught as the teams rolled into overtime after 90 minutes of scoreless play, which was largely controlled by Trojan feet. With time ticking down, a long Marlee Carrillo throw-in sent the ball into the box. Washington efforts to clear went awry, and Johnson jumped on the opportunity and delivered a blast to the back of the net for the winner just 11 seconds away from the end of the first OT to put the win on the Trojans record. It was Johnson s second lategame winner this season. The senior scored with 15 seconds left in regulation at San Diego on Sept. 14 for the win there, and now has the latest heroics in the books with her OT winner in the 100th minute of action. With four goals scored this year, Johnson now has a career total of 14. STRONG START In taking a 2-1 to start the season, USC matched its 2008 start, which also happens to be the last time the Trojans won both their season and home openers, as USC has done in The Trojans 4-1 win over Saint Mary s was the highest scoring home opener for the Women of Troy since 2007, the year of USC s run to the national championship that began with a 5-1 win over Weber State. The scoring production of eight goals in the first three games was a marked shift from the 2011 campaign. Through their first three games of 2012, the Trojans had already matched their scoring output from their first more USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC USC
2 HEAD COACH ALI KHOSROSHAHIN Ali Khosroshahin enters his sixth season at the helm of the USC women s soccer program, having guided the Women of Troy to a National Championship in his first season and to NCAA appearances in four of the past five years. In 2007, Khosroshahin became the first coach to win the national title in his first season with his program, and accumulated a number of other firsts for himself and the Trojans. After leading USC to the first NCAA title for the program and for the Pac-10, Khosroshahin was named the National Coach of the Year by the NSCAA, SoccerBuzz and Soccer America. Also named the SoccerBuzz West Region Coach of the Year, Khosroshahin had garnered a career-best win total with USC s overall record in In 2008, Khosroshahin (pronounced ho-sro-sha-heen) guided the Trojans into the NCAA Tournament once again, reaching the NCAA Third Round and finishing with a overall record. Khosroshahin s 2009 and 2010 Trojans also reached the NCAA Tournament, appearing in the First Round in 2009 and the Second Round in 2010, where USC fell to eventual champion Notre Dame. His overall coaching career record now stands at (.652) with a (.658) mark in five seasons at USC. In his 11 seasons as a head coach, Khosroshahin s teams have made a combined seven NCAA appearances, including USC s four straight trips in his first four seasons at Troy. Khosroshahin also coaches in the Olympic Development Program as the assistant coach for the Cal South 96 born girls. In the summer of 2012, he saw three of his former players compete for their respective countries at the 2012 Women s World Cup. U.S. Olympic gold-medalist Amy Rodriguez was a member of the World Cup champion Team USA squad, while Marlene Sandoval competed for Mexico and Karen Bardsley played for England. In summer 2008, Khosroshahin traveled to Africa to participate in workshops supporting the Sport for Social Change Initiative, which is working to establish a network for organizations promoting the development of girls soccer programs in Kenya. Also, as assistant coach of the Under-17 Mexican National Team, Khosroshahin was in Trinidad & Tobago to coach Mexico at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2008 FIFA Under-17 Women s World Cup. Khosroshahin came to Troy after spending six years as the head women s coach at Cal State Fullerton. While coaching the Titans, he was honored as the Big West Coach of the Year three times, as he guided the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Titans had winning seasons in each of Khoroshahin s six years there ( ). Khosroshahin recorded a number of milestones during his time at Cal State Fullerton after taking over a fledgling program that had posted winning records only twice in its previous eight-year history. He won 64.8% of his matches ( ), including a (71.0%) league mark. His 76 overall wins and 34 Big West victories were more than the school had totaled in either category before he took over. Before taking over at Cal State Fullerton, he was an assistant with the Titans women s and men s programs for four years ( ). He began his coaching career in 1992 as the boys varsity head coach at Canyon High in Anaheim (Calif.), where he was the Century League Coach of the Year in He then was the girls varsity head coach at San Marino (Calif.) High in He broke into the collegiate ranks in 1994, serving as a graduate assistant with the men s team at his alma mater, Cal State Los Angeles. He then became a full-time women s and men s assistant there for three seasons ( ). Khosroshahin also has coached at the international level. He was an assistant with Mexico during the 1999 Women s World Cup, was on the staff of Mexico s U-19 Women s National Program in 2004 and the U-20 squad in 2005 and helped the Mexican women s team prepare for the 2004 Olympics. He also assisted during the U.S. Women s Indoor Soccer Victory Tour following their 1999 Women s World Cup title and even coached the U.S. National team during a match. Born Feb. 26, 1970, Khosroshahin received his bachelor s degree in business administration (marketing management emphasis) from Cal State Los Angeles in He and his wife Allison reside in Los Angeles ȦLI S HEAD COACHING RECORD OVERALL CONFERENCE Year School W L T PCT W L T PCT (Conf.) 2001 CSF (Big West) 2002 CSF (Big West) 2003 CSF (Big West) 2004 CSF (Big West) 2005 CSF (Big West) 2006 CSF (Big West) 2007 USC (Pac-10) 2008 USC (Pac-10) 2009 USC (Pac-10) 2010 USC (Pac-10) 2011 USC (Pac-12) USC/Pac CAREER eight games of YOUTH MOVEMENT USC has lined up with no fewer than five newcomers in the starting lineup in every game of 2012, and all but five of USC s 17 goals scored to date has come from a new Trojan foot six of those true freshmen. Two freshmen, Megan Borman and Katie Johnson, have notched two-goal games so far in their first year as Trojans. On the defensive end, freshman goalkeeper Faith Sugerman anchored the first win of 2012, while sophomore transfer Caroline Stanley stepped in for the start against Saint Mary s to log the first 69 minutes of that 4-1 win. On the starting blocks, USC freshmen Jamie Fink and Katie Johnson have started all 2012 Pac-12 Standings Team Pts. Conf. Overall 1. Stanford Arizona USC Oregon St UCLA Washington St Colorado Oregon Washington California Utah Arizona St nine games. Transfer Jordan Marada has done the same, and leads the team to date in points with three goals and four assists. Freshman defender Erin Owen has been tabbed for eight starts, as has goalkeeper Stanley. TREES R US To go along with senior defender Kristina Noriega -- who stands at 5-foot 10-inches -- USC s crop of newcomers boasts a lofty crew of talent with regular roles in the Trojan gameplan. Aside from Noriega, USC has freshmen Megan Borman (5-10), Marlee Carrillo (6-0) Jamie Fink (5-9), Katie Johnson (5-9) and Erin Owen (6-1) looming at 5-9 and up. Sophomore transfer Alex Quincey stands at 6-1 and started her first three games as a Trojan. That height has had either a head or a foot in scoring or setting up eight of USC s 17 goals to date. Borman and Johnson have already made their mark as the only players to put in a two-goal performance to date. Borman notched her pair in USC s 4-1 win over Saint Mary s in the Aug. 24 home opener, and Johnson slotted two on Sept. 16 in a 3-2 loss to No. 19 Portland. INJURY REPORT USC has two players sidelined for the season after offseason ACL injuries. Senior Isabelle Johnson and incoming freshman Jeanette Jimenez will not participate in SENIOR LEADER The versatile senior Samantha Johnson played in almost every spot on the pitch except for the goal in her junior season to help fill holes left by a vicious injury bug. A striker by nature, Johnson moved to a defensive role last year. But now, with returns and reinforcements bolstering the Trojan back line, Johnson has been freed up to lead her team from a more natural spot in the attack. Now in her fourth year at Troy, Johnson is the reigning veteran to lead by example and by instruction. With four goals to date including dramatic game-winners at San Diego on Sept. 14 and vs. Washington on Sept. 21 Johnson has bumped up her career tally to 14 as she works on climbing up the USC career charts. BACK ON THE ATTACK USC returns seven of its 11 goal scorers from 2011, including top scorer Elizabeth Eddy, who provided four goals, including two game-winners. Those seven scorers had combined to provide 64 percent of the Trojan scoring load last season. In addition to Eddy, who enters her junior season this year, USC has senior Kristina Noriega and Samantha Johnson and junior Haley Boysen back as multiple-goal scorers in Johnson leads the pack of returner with a team-high four goals to date, including two gamewinners, and Eddy also has scored a goal for the Trojans this year. NUMBERS GAME The 2012 USC roster is 34 players strong. Twenty of those are wearing Cardinal and Gold for the first time, and every last one of them aims to make a lasting impression. So if strength in numbers means anything at all, the Women of Troy are in good shape. With the influx of newcomers an invigorating blend of transfers and freshmen an injury-depleted 2011 roster that was dinged up with more losses than USC had taken since 1993 now boasts a healthy glow for GOLDEN TROJAN USC s Amy Rodriguez captured her second Olympic gold medal this summer as a member of Team USA in London. An All-American at USC, Rodriguez competed for the Women of Troy from In her junior season, Rodriguez helped power USC to its first-ever NCAA Championship, as the Trojans won the 2007 title. The following year, Rodriguez had been called up the U.S. ladder to make her Olympic debut. She would go on to serve up the assist on the game-winning goal in the 2008 gold-medal game. In London, Rodriguez played in four games during the USA s run to 2012 gold. LAST SEASON USC had a shockingly frustrating season in 2011, taking the second most losses in program history in finishing up overall. Six of those losses were in one-goal games, and the Trojans would finish eighth in the Pac-12 at Elizabeth Eddy was USC s top scorer with four goals, including two gamewinners. Senior Brittany Kerridge led the pack in assist with nine, finishing with a team-high 15 points. USC would miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since All-Pac-12 honors went to Kerridge
