12 Small Animal Biosecurity: Biosecurity means doing everything you can to reduce the chances of an infectious disease being carried onto your farm/ household by people, animals, equipment, or vehicles, either accidentally or on purpose. Here are some regulations that relate specifically to Showing your Small Animal! Use your own transportation. Don t ship your animals with animals from other farms/households. Ship only in a vehicle that has been cleaned and disinfected. If you can smell animal in the empty vehicle, it has not been cleaned and disinfected properly. Don t let your animal touch other animals, especially nose to nose. Don t share equipment (e.g., water, brushes, or sponges). Wash your hands, especially after helping other people with their animals. Don t let strangers pet your animal, especially those with the same type of animal at home or people who have been out of the country within the past 2 weeks. Before leaving the show grounds, clean and disinfect shoes, equipment, and grooming supplies. Brush off dirt or manure; then disinfect (spray or wipes are easy to take with you). When you get home, shower, blow your nose, and put on clean clothes and shoes before going near your other animals. At the Show Monitor your animals for signs of illness. If you suspect your animal is sick, notify a show official right away All animal waste should be cleaned while the show is occurring. This is as simple as brining tissues with you to pick up your animals waste should the animal go on your grooming table or while on the showing tables. Make sure to always wash your hands with warm soapy water after removing your animals waste. Bringing Your Animal Back From a Show If possible, keep animals which were off the farm/household isolated for at least 2 weeks. Make sure there is no nose-tonose contact. For the complete publication please visit: Small Animal Welfare: During show season, 4-H members have an opportunity to showcase our belief in the ethical and humane treatment of animals and demonstrate our guarantee of safe practices. While showing animals, we are under the regulations of proper Animal Welfare practices. Please practice these guidelines. 1. Provide fresh, clean water to your animals. 2. Keep your cages clean and dry at all times. 3. Be aware of animal comfort zones i.e. temperature, space. 4. Sort and load animals safely and with concern for others. 5. Train animals to be handled. 6. Arrange for veterinary care in case of an animal emergency. 7. Handle animals in a very humane way. Participates not in correspondents with this will be asked to leave the show grounds. 8. Avoid stressing the animals. 9. Review and follow the care recommendations of the 4-H project manual and USDA manual. This is also a good way to answer any questions the public may have. 10. Have a plan of action if a problem should arise and who to contact to help solve it. 11. Know who and where show officials are and how to get in contact with them. For the complete publication please visit:
