11 Lot 2 HAYTHORN about the ranch LAND AND CATTLE CO. ARTHUR, NEBRASKA HAYTHORN.COM Located in the Sandhills of Nebraska, the Haythorn Land and Cattle Company claims a unique and colorful history. Founder Harry Haythornthwaite first got a taste of the grit of the Sandhills when he came north from Texas on a cattle drive. As a sixteen-year-old boy in Lancaster, England, Harry had fallen in love too early and was denied his wish to marry. The heartbroken lad stowed away on a ship in Discovered by the ship s captain, he was put to work tending white-faced bulls headed for Galveston, Texas. Over the next eight years Harry worked as a cowhand making four trail drives into Kansas and Nebraska and unlike most settlers, was drawn to the vast space of the Great Plains. Harry found the Great Plains to his liking and decided to stay. He opened a livery barn, shortened his name to Haythorn and married Emma Gilpin, a veterinarian s daughter. In 1884, Harry filed a land grant section to begin the Haythorn Ranches that now spread over two ranches in two counties. In the late 1800s, Harry purchased 500 head of horses and trailed them back to Nebraska from Baker, Oregon. Then, in the 1940s, Walt Haythorn, Harry s son, purchased Sport the first registered quarter horse in Nebraska, who went on to produce many geldings and exceptional producing mares. Haythorns crossed these mares with the original Eddie with great success. The ranch was recognized in with the first annual Best of the Remuda Award bestowed by AQHA. Since then the equine operation has added bloodlines that include PlayGun, Metallic Cat and Haidas Little Pep. Present day manager, Craig Haythorn is the 4 th generation of Haythorns to manage this historic sandhills ranch. He and his wife Jody and 5 th generation Sage, and his wife Kelley, and Cord co-manage the day-to-day events trying to preserve cowboy traditions in an ever changing and increasingly challenging industry. On Christmas Day 2015, the 6 th generation Steel Daniel Haythorn was born! In July 2017, Cord married his wife Katie. With horses playing a pivotal role, the Haythorn Ranch continues to carry on its rich western traditions. 9

17 Lot 5 about the ranch STUART RANCH WAURIKA, OKLAHOMA STUARTRANCH.COM In 1868, Robert Clay Freeny left Boggy Depot, Indian Territory to settle on the Redlands on what is today the Atoka/Bryan county line, north and east of Caddo Oklahoma. This country would become the future headquarters for the Stuart Ranch, which has now grown into a diversified operation spanning four counties in the great state of Oklahoma. The headquarters today is in Jefferson County, near Waurika Oklahoma. Robert Clay registered one of the first brands in the Choctaw Nation; today cattle are branded with a 7S on the left hip and the horses branded with an S on their left shoulder. The Stuart Ranch was designated an Oklahoma Centennial Ranch by the Historical Society and in 2012 was inducted into the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame. The ranch has also been honored for its stewardship in grazing management by the Society of Range Management. The ranch operates a commercial cow herd comprised of Hereford and Black Baldys. We calve in a 60-day season in both the spring and fall. Calves are weaned and we have the options of wheat or grass. Replacement heifers are also a primary focus in our operation and are available open or bred. Our no-till wheat pasture gives us the flexibility to better use our native grass, take in gain cattle and gives us options on timing as to the marketing of home-raised calves. The ranch has a drought plan in place and does not deviate from it. In 1949, Bob Stuart began to upgrade the horses on the ranch with the purchase of Big Shot Dun from the Waggoner Ranch. Son O Leo and Port Command crossed back on the Big Shot Dun and Breezy Buck mares laid a solid foundation for the broodmare band. Today the ranch maintains around 30 mares of which all have proven themselves on the ranch and/or in the show pen with the majority being producers and performers. The ranch strives to produce versatile horses with eye appeal, good structure, conformation and agility. Stuart Ranch has produced numerous World Champions, superior event horses, NRCHA, NCHA and RHAA money earners, national high point titles and the 1995 Superhorse, Genuine Redbud. In 2014, Miss T Stuart (1961) - (Breezy Buck x Pretty Sally x Big Shot Dun) will be inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. In 1995 the ranch was honored to be the recipient of the Best Remuda Award. The ranch participates in the Ranching Heritage Breeders program and has won the Heritage Challenge event twice. With abundant populations of whitetail deer, turkey (both Eastern and Rio Grande), feral hogs, quail, ducks and geese, the ranch began to pursue another enterprise. Stuart Ranch Outfitters was developed to oversee all the management of the wildlife populations and to provide a guide service. Stuart Ranch Outfitters is continually enhancing accommodations and creating unique hunting packages. Being good stewards of the resources God has given us to manage, is a commitment to which the ranch is dedicated. As the oldest ranch in the state of Oklahoma under continuous family ownership, the ranch is proud of its tradition and heritage and looks forward to an exciting future of excellence. 15

These ranches are stocked with a herd of commercial angus cows for the production of value added feeder cattle and top quality replacement heifers. A. Brown, Sr., started the family s Ranch Horse program with in the 1930s. Subsequently, in 1940, R.A. Brown, Sr. and a group of fellow horse enthusiasts met in Fort Worth, Texas to found the current American Quarter Horse Association. Brown, Jr. Rob, and is currently serving as a director of the AQHA. And continuing this tradition, Rob A. s seven children are all very active and dedicated to the family s ranch horse program. 21 Lot 7 PITCHFORK about the ranch LAND AND CATTLE CO. GUTHRIE, TEXAS THEPITCHFORKRANCH.COM From all accounts, the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company would not exist were it not for Daniel Baldwin Gardner and Eugene Flewellyn Williams, both cousins and life-long friends. They were born in Mississippi in 1851 to plantation-owning families. In 1871, tales of abundant opportunity in Texas lured Gardner to Fort Griffin, located near present-day Albany. In February of 1877, Gardner was one of 17 men who drafted plans for what was to become one of the most powerful and prestigious livestock organizations in the world, which is known today as the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. In the summer of 1881, Gardner learned that Jerry Savage, who had been running cattle on the South Wichita River under a Pitchfork brand, was interested in selling land, equipment and stock. Needing capital, Gardner thought of his boyhood friend and cousin, Eugene Williams. In 1881, Williams journeyed to Fort Worth and after a dinner meeting announced he was ready to close the deal, without seeing either the land or the cattle. Williams said he was investing in the venture solely because he had the highest regard for his cousin, Dan Gardner. Williams wrote a check and took the night train back to St. Louis. The property Gardner and Williams purchased included 2,600 longhorn cattle, 70 horses, wagons and camp equipment, but little land. They did obtain rights to the ranch that bordered the South Wichita River in eastern Dickens and western King counties. Wishing to expand, but lacking capital, the two men found two willing investors from Texas, A.P. Bush, Jr. and Samuel Lazarus and two from St. Louis, A.D. Brown and W. H. Carroll. In St. Louis on December 29, 1883, the partners gathered to adopt the by-laws and elect officers of the newly formed corporation known as the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company. Gardner was chosen to be general manager, a position he held until his death in June of Six managers have filled the vacancy left by Gardner. These included Rudolph Swenson, Virgil Parr, D. Burns, Jim Humphreys and Bob Moorhouse. Today, the ranch is managed by Brooks Hodges. The Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company stretches some 181,000 acres in three west Texas counties and newly acquired acreage in Waurika, Oklahoma known as the Pitchfork OK Ranch. The descendants of Eugene Williams continue to operate the 136-year-old ranch in the same conservative manner as did the ranch s founders. 19

Johnson, Sr., started the Muleshoe brand when he bought the Blackwater division of the XIT Ranch on the Blackwater draw about The Santa Fe Railroad built a road from Lubbock to Clovis, NM which ran through the middle of the ranch known as the Muleshoe Ranch. By that time Mr. Johnson had sold the ranch to E.K. Warren and son from Three Oaks, Michigan. Warren gave one section for a townsite when the railroad was built. This town was named Muleshoe and still goes by that name. When Mr. Johnson sold the ranch, he maintained the Muleshoe brand. Around 1908, Mr. Johnson and Mr. R.M. Clayton formed a partnership, the Clayton and Johnson Co. and bought a ranch in Borden County in 1913 continuing to use the Muleshoe brand. What is now the Muleshoe Ranch was originally open grazing and used by the Magnolia Land and Cattle Co. prior to In 1945 Mr. Jerry Clayton, one of R.M. 27 Lot 10 about the ranch TONGUE RIVER RANCH PADUCAH, TEXAS TONGUERIVERRANCH.NET In 1898 Eric and Albin Swenson purchased the 79,000 acre Scab 8 Ranch. The ranch was located in the excellent ranch country of King, Cottle, Motley and Dickens counties. The brothers renamed it Tongue River Ranch (TRR) because of its location on the Tongue (South Pease) River, aptly named in reference to black tongue, a nineteenth century disease which wiped out many buffalo in the region. Folklore also states that the many different Indian tribes in the area nicknamed the river River of Many Tongues which was later shortened to Tongue River. Present day owner, Millard Morris purchased the picturesque Tongue River at its current size of 89,000 rolling acres in In 2007, Tongue River added the scenic 30,000 acre Big Baldy Ranch in New Mexico. The facilities are modern, but the feel of the ranch is that of the old west. The cowboys roll out the chuck wagon pulled by a team of mules twice a year for two weeks in the fall and spring. The cattle are worked just as they were 100 years ago. The Ranch Manager is TJ Roberts. TJ and his wife Kristin have been instrumental in preserving the ranch heritage. Paramount to the Tongue River Ranch operation is their outstanding horse program. TRR has concentrated on raising horses that are well built, highly intelligent and incredible athletes. This is evidenced by the numerous ranch rodeo wins, best remuda awards and top horse honors Tongue River Ranch has received and the fact that Tongue River Ranch was the 2011 recipient of the prestigious AQHA Best of Remuda Award. Tongue River Ranch takes great pride in preserving the land for future generations. Continuing tradition and preserving history is a way of life, not a job at Tongue River Ranch. 25

29 Lot 11 about the ranch BURNETT RANCHES, LLC GUTHRIE, TEXAS RANCH.COM Founded by Captain Samuel Burk Burnett in about 1870, Burnett Ranches comprise one of the largest individually-owned ranch properties in Texas. Nearly 300,000 deeded acres are spread near the north central plains towns of Guthrie and Panhandle. Additional ranch acreage is leased and operated in Nevada and Wyoming. Today the ranches are owned and operated by Anne W. Marion, great granddaughter of founder Burk Burnett. The Burnett Ranches have become known as the Four Sixes, referring to the Brand 6666 that has been worn on cattle for more than a century. A colorful tale has grown around the origination of this now legendary brand that Burk Burnett won the original ranch in a poker game with a winning hand of four sixes. This story is colorful but untrue. Here s the real story: around 1867, a young Burk Burnett purchased 100 head of cattle near Denton, Texas, all of which carried this now famous brand. He bought the brand too, and continued to use it as he built his ranch empire. Burnett Ranches was a charter member of the American Quarter Horse Association and continues to strive toward producing the world s best ranch horse. The Burnett Quarter Horses wear an L brand in honor of Burk Burnett s father-in-law, Captain M.B. Lloyd. Four of the most famous sires were Joe Hancock, Hollywood Gold, Grey Badger II and Tanquery Gin. The Four Sixes colts are carefully bred to have cowsense, speed, gentleness and good looks. 27

31 Lot 12 about the ranch W.T. WAGGONER ESTATE, INC. VERNON, TEXAS , EXT. 252 WAGGONERRANCH.COM W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc. was started in 1849 by Dan Waggoner. Dan began buying land in western Wise County in In 1873 Dan and his 21-year-old son, W.T. (Tom) drove a herd of cattle to market in Kansas, and returned with $55,000. This was considered to be a fortune at that time. It was seed money to start an empire. As the land was cleared for settlement, they gradually moved to the west, buying grasslands, having holdings in six counties. Dan passed away in 1902, and W.T. Waggoner continued to expand and operate his ranching interests until 1923, when he formed what is known today as the W.T. Waggoner Estate. The W.T. Waggoner Estate stretches into six counties, with headquarters in Vernon, Texas. Main interests of the company are ranching, oil and approximately 26,000 acres in cultivation. The horses are bred for working ranch purposes and many still carry the bloodline of the famous Quarter Horse, Poco Bueno. Descendants of Dan Waggoner sold the sprawling ranch to Kroenke Ranches in February of Kroenke Ranches now owns ranches in Canada and the US. The main office for the ranch is located in Vernon, Texas. The headquarters for the ranch, known as Zacaweista, is located 13 miles south of Vernon. The ranch consists of approximately 525,000 contiguous acres which makes it the largest ranch in the nation under one fence. It employs approximately 96 people, ranging from cowboys, farm hands, oil field workers, to office staff. Ranch management constantly strives to implement proven modern techniques into the operation, making the W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc. one of the largest cow/calf enterprises in the country. 29

33 Lot 13 about the ranch SPADE RANCHES, LTD LUBBOCK, TEXAS SPADERANCHES.COM The Spade Ranch legacy began more than 120 years ago, in 1889, when DeKalb, Illinois, natives Colonel Isaac Ellwood and his son, W.L. Ellwood, made a simple business trip to West Texas. In 1874 Ellwood became one of the original patent holders of barbed wire when he and his neighbor developed an economical way to keep livestock out of the area s many farms. The invention quickly changed the Midwest farmland, but the Ellwoods saw a burgeoning market in the vast expanses of the West Texas plains. Among the ranchers, the Ellwoods met were the Snyder brothers. The brothers must have been shrewd businessmen themselves because not only did they resist Ellwood s sales pitch, they convinced him to buy their 130,000-acre ranch. By the 1960 s the Spade Ranches began a planned crossbreeding program in the cow-calf operation that continues today-although adjusting with changing market demand. Today, the ranches use composite bulls (Simnn/Angus and Balancer) crossing the heifers from one mating to the other composite. This maintains a high level of heterosis while producing a uniform calf crop, a stable breed composition, and eliminating the need to buy replacement heifers from other sources. Today s horse breeding program crosses the daughters of their own son of Peptoboonsmal with their son of High Brow Cat and vice versa. The objective is to use unrelated bloodlines to produce functional ranch horses with lots of cow sense and bottom. The Spade ranches today consist of six outfits: the original Renderbrook Spade in Mitchell, Sterling and Coke counties; Borden Spade in Borden County; Wagon Creek Spade in Throckmorton County; North Spade in Briscoe and Motley counties; Panhandle Spade in Roberts County and Alpine Spade in Brewster and Presidio counties, totaling about 275,000 acres. Wesley Welch is the President and C.E.O. of Spade Ranches and the board of directors include five great-great grandchildren of Isaac Ellwood along with outside directors. 31

He will be the same every time you step on him, even if you haven t ridden him in 3 months. He has the strength and speed to make an outstanding rope horse. 35 Lot 14 about the ranch BONDS RANCH SAGINAW, TEXAS Bonds Ranch was founded in 1933 by P.R. (Bob) Bonds after he purchased part of the Mary Hicks Ranch, just north of Saginaw, Texas. Not being a cowboy himself, Bob hired Owen (Big Pete) Burnett in 1944 as ranch foreman. Pete Bonds, Bob s youngest son, was mentored by Burnett following Bob s death in 1954 and eventually took over the full-time management of the ranch in Historically a cow/calf operation, under Pete s management, the operation became more diversified expanding its cow/calf genetics, grazing yearlings on leased and purchased land in various states, and finishing cattle in feedyards. The ranch expanded with the purchase of land in Falls and Hemphill counties in Texas and in Union and Colfax counties in New Mexico. Under Burnett s guidance, Bonds knew the importance of a good ranch horse and became dedicated to breeding quality ranch quarter horses. He needed a stout and smart horse that he could count on every day. In 1971, Bonds purchased mares and fillies from Mrs. Ott Burnett, a cousin of Burk Burnett. As thanks for being generous in a business deal, former Senator William Blakely gifted Bonds Ranch a breeding stallion, Concho Jim, in This cross of the size and speed of Concho Jim s lineage with mares with genetics from proven sires like Hollywood Gold, One Eyed Waggoner, and Cee Bars produced the perfect ranch horse for Bonds Ranch strong, stout, cowy and athletic. Bonds Ranch horses could be found on many of the local ranches and were used in the arena. In 1991, Pete was AQHA World Champion in Amateur Team Penning on Concho Juan Vito. Pete s daughters were regular finalists at the AQHYA World Championships in Team Penning in the 1990s. They also competed in high school rodeos in cutting, roping, goat tying, and barrel racing on the same horses they rode everyday on the ranch. Yet Bonds Ranch never sold many horses to the public. The ranch needed to maintain a certain number of horses for its own operations. With such diverse operations and locations, Bonds Ranch quarter horses must be versatile. Horses need to withstand the mountains and rocky terrain of New Mexico as well as the muddy oat fields of Marlin, Texas. Ranch horses are used for every phase of ranch life from dragging calves to doctoring yearlings to sorting cows. As a family operation, Pete relies on his family for the management of Bonds Ranch. He continues to manage with his wife Jo and their daughters, Missy, Bonnie and April. 33

37 Lot 15 about the ranch CENTER RANCH CENTERVILLE, TEXAS CENTERRANCH.COM Founded by Finis Welch in 1987, and managed by Jay Dickson since 1992, Center Ranch is located near Centerville - among the piney woods and rolling hills of East Central Texas. Over the past 30+ years, Center Ranch has grown from a 130 acre property to an 10,600 acre thriving hay operation, cattle business, training facility, and equine veterinary center. The Ranch has balanced a combination of traditional Texas cattle ranching with some of the most technologically advanced agricultural services available to make it a leader in the ranching industry. Center Ranch s experience, selective breeding, and equine care have allowed them to produce and sell top quality cutting and ranch horses to their clients. NCHA Hall of Famer, Ronnie Rice manages the 2 and 3 year- old training program giving each of the started cutting prospects and ranch horses, as well as the riders who ride them, a distinct advantage in the cutting arena and on the ranch. Center Ranch s brand, identified by the Greek letter, sigma, means the summation. The Center Ranch and the horses that bear its brand, are considered to be the summation of the many years of good luck, hard work, pedigree, performance, and care that have been invested into the Center Ranch horse program. 35

JOLLY, TEXAS Vicars Cattle Company, located in north Texas, was established in the early 1980 s when owner Carroll Vicars began his own ranching business after the partnership was dissolved with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. Current dayto-day management is a partnership between owner Carroll, his son Doug and son-in-law, Ken Jarosz. Presently, the ranch consists of a cow/calf and yearling operation. All yearlings are pre-conditioned in traps before being turned out either on grass or wheat, where the horses play a vital role in the maintenance of the cattle. The family strives to continue the ranching tradition for their future generations by using quality horses in the daily management of the ranch as well as being competitive in cow horse and cutting competitions. 37
