1 February 2013 County Show Reminders The Lee County Junior Livestock Show (LCJLS) is March 20 through March 23. Here is some important informa on regarding your 4-H par cipa on. Bring your own shavings. Stall shavings are not sold on Show Grounds. Please read carefully and be well prepared. Clean Up Requirement LCJLS General Rule 4. (p) Pre Sale Clean Up (ages 13 and older) All 4-H Exhibitors, ages 13 and older, including cake exhibitors, are expected to par cipate in a mandatory Work Day on Saturday, March 16, at 8:00 am. Each exhibi ng 4-H family should also be represented by an adult to help prepare the Show grounds for the livestock arrival. Sign In/Sign Out 4-H Exhibitors must sign-in at the beginning of their clean-up shi. Your signature is your guarantee of receiving clean-up credit. Exhibitors should report for their clean-up shi in front of the Foods and Crea ve Arts Exhibit Building. Stall Clean Up A er the Auc on Sale on Saturday, March 23, each exhibitor is responsible for cleaning out their stall. Mandy Berger has been involved with livestock her en re life and has been showing since the 3rd grade. She has competed in jackpot, county, breeding and major livestock shows with her goats and pigs. Compe ng in the Show Ring led her to the 4-H Livestock Ambassador Program which she a ended last summer. This program taught Mandy what it means to be an advocate for the livestock industry and provided her with the training and knowledge to do so. As a result of her par cipa on in this program, Mandy has had the opportunity to speak at several different livestock func ons allowing her the opportunity to reach out to other exhibitors and help the livestock industry. As a result of the Livestock Ambassador Program, Mandy has met exhibitors from all over the state, developed las ng friendships. She also met with several professors from the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences at Texas A&M University, allowing her to establish contacts that will have a posi ve effect on her future. If you have ques ons about the 4-H Livestock Ambassador Program, or becoming an advocate for the livestock industry, Mandy would be happy to talk to you about it!

Penal es Assessed A $100 penalty will be assessed to any exhibitor for each Work Day missed, and also for failure to clean your pen or stall prior to being released on Auc on Sale Day. Health Requirements LCJLS General Rule 4. (m) No animal showing evidence of disease shall be permi ed on the Show Grounds. Livestock must comply with the entry requirements as set out by the Texas Animal Health Commission. All medicated feedstuff and drugs must be withdrawn in accordance with the label for the product used or fed. Weight Ranges All Market Animals will be weighed on the Show Grounds by a qualified person appointed by the LCJLS Board. Weighing will begin at You don t have to be on Facebook to be able to keep up with Lee County 4 H on Facebook. Weighing your market project is one of the most important tasks to be done throughout the me with your project. If you would weigh your project once a week, you can track of your project s weight gain and will be able to no ce signs of sickness before your animal passes the point of no return. When weighing your animal, be sure to keep records of the weight over the en re feeding period. It is recommended that a small notebook be kept with the date, tag number of the animal, weight, average daily gain since the last recorded weight, and any comments or observa ons that might have taken place in the me since last weight was the me shown on the schedule (Pg. 3). Each species will weigh in the order designated by the superintendent of that department. Animals must be brushed clean when presented for weighing. The animal s weight will be recorded on the back of each exhibitor s card. The Ownership declared when the animal is presented at weigh-in (before entering the scale) is FINAL. Only animals within Show weights will be permi ed to be shown. Meat Rabbits lbs. per pen Market Lambs at least 100 lbs. Market Hogs at least 220 lbs., not over 280 lbs. Market Steers minimum of 1,000 lbs. Market Goats between 70 lbs. and 125 lbs. Clipping If you need of assistance in clipping your project in prepara on for the LCJLS, contact the Extension office. Lost Ear Tag LCJLS General Rule 4. (k) Lost ear tags must be reported to the Extension office immediately. A $2 retag charge will be applied to each animal. All animals will be retagged on Wednesday, March 20, as follows: Commercial Heifers Giddings Vet Clinic between 1 pm and 1:30 pm any other animal LCJLS Show Barn Calculating Weight Gain for Market Projects recorded. It is also recommended that you try your best to weigh your animal at the same me of day. This will help with any inconsistencies with feeding mes and help get the most accurate weight of you animal. To figure the average daily gain (ADG), divide the weight gain of the animal by the number of days between weighing. For example, if you had a steer that prior to weigh-in Scholas c Eligibility LCJLS General Rule 4. (d) The Extension office will send each school a list of students who are 4-H exhibitors in the 2013 LCJLS, reques ng the school s approval for academic eligibility and excused absences for each 4-H exhibitor for the me of the County Show, March 20 - March 23. LCJLS will follow policies as set forth by the Texas Educa on Agency. If an Exhibitor is determined ineligible on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, then the entry is ineligible. Thank You Le ers LCJLS General Rule 4. (r) Copies of Buyer s Slip and Buyers addresses will be sent to 4-H er by the Extension office. Each 4-H er par cipa ng in the Auc- on Sale and/or receiving any Showmanship award(s), must write a Thank You le er to the Buyer and/or Award Donor. Thank You Le ers must be in an addressed/stamped envelope and turned in to the Extension office by April 26. Thank You Le ers should be in an addressed and self-stamped envelopes. Failing to write and turn in a Thank You Le er could result in your Auc on Sale check being withheld. weighed 936 lbs. on , but the steer weighed 958 lbs. was on , over the seven days between weighing, there was a total of 22 lbs. gained. 4 The 4-H Outdoor Challenge (June 29 and 30) is a team compe on consis ng of ten events. Contestants, ages 8 to 18, train on-theirown, arriving at the Challenge prepared to compete. A team consists of two members within the same age division. There are three gender classes; male, female and co-ed. Throughout the two-day compe on, teams compete to earn points, demonstra ng their skills in: Shoo ng Sports (rifle, shotgun, and archery) Spor ishing Swimming Canoeing Camping/Outdoor Living Skills Orienteering Iden fica on of Wildlife and Natural Resources Outdoor Safety Teamwork Decision-making Page 4 Mountaineering Event descrip ons and study resources are listed on-line at: h p://texas4 h.tamu.edu/outdoor Registra on will open May 6 and be conducted on-line through your 4-H CONNECT profile. The 1st Annual North Texas 4-H Chicken Fest will be Saturday, February 23, from 9 am to 3 pm, in Dallas. The North Texas 4-H Chicken Fest will enhance youth showmanship skills and make sense of chicken language. Par cipants will learn: bio-security environments housing and feeding requirements breed iden fica on.. things to help back-yard flock thrive In addi on, informa on will be shared on how to start an exhibi on poultry 4-H club in your County.
