1 Alberta Donkey and Mule Club News, Oct/Nov 2013 The 24 th Tees Longears Days, August 17 & 18, held annually at the Rodeo Grounds in the hamlet of Tees, AB., east of Lacombe, completed another informative and fun event for club members and the many spectators that came out to enjoy the atmosphere and sunny weather. Despite the fact that we faced one calamity after the other; the caterer cancelling the week before the show, the judge the day before and the announcer the night before - the show ran with barely a hitch! In the end we enjoyed the input of 2 great judges, several announcers and a caterer who stepped in and delivered one of our most appreciated suppers ever! Our club president Russ Shandro and his mule Ruger giving a ''double up, double'' ride to young mule admirers at Tees Longears Days New participants included Joe and Loreen Kress from Hanley, Saskatchewan. Loreen, a barrel racer [and as we also discovered, an accomplished singer] brought her mule that she had purchased in March at the Jake Clark Mule Days in U.S. This lovely 5 yr. old grey molly won a fist full of ribbons and both Loreen and Joe on his borrowed mule Jessie, owned and loved by Merv Hollihan, joined in our famous mule Drill Team famous that is in that we have a couple of practice runs the night before

2 and then perform, Saturday and Sunday. Believe it or not, even accomplished riders compliment us on the drill. Who has more fun!!

Landon, a city boy has taken a shine to riding and Daisy our 17 yr. old molly mule is a great match for him. Photo of mini mule Turbo, ''coon jumping'' at Tees Longears Days in August. Coon Jumping features jumping from a standstill, something that mules and donkeys do very easily, much like a deer. His owner and handler is Heather Shandro from Vegreville, AB. Between classes, Amy Dorland, an accomplished Parelli Instructor and well received addition to the show, shared several demos using her horse Sugar. As Amy and Sugar worked their magic, Amy explained everything that was happening which was appreciated by the audience. A good crowd of spectators viewed the show on both days, many having travelling from quite a distance for the show. Next year will be

5 our 25 Anniversary and we are already making plans for a something spectacular! You will not want to miss it. Word from the southern end of the province is that club member Ed Burles with his partner s mule Squidge, has won the Intermediate division of the Competitive Trail Ride at the Writing On Stone Ride. Sue has ridden Squidge for several years in many venues including ADMC demos at the Mane Event and the Calgary Stampde. Squidge is out of an Arabian mare and has proven her heritage by this recent win at Competitive Trail. Alice Todd reports that Sonney their standard donkey, made enough income from her stint in the movies this summer to pay for the rest of the herd s winter hay. Pretty neat to own a donkey that can bring home a paycheck! Our Semi Annual meeting was held in October at Ponoka, AB., with a decent turn out of members.
