1 The Roper News ISSUE 4 ropernews@hotmail.com March 16, 2011 Behind the Barrier with Trent Creagor If you watched the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas last December then you noticed a new name among the tie-down ropers. Stillwater native Trent Creagor Producer: Audra Helms ropernews@hotmail.com (918) qualified for his first NFR in 2010 and hasn t looked back since. Although Creagor was a new name among the NFR, it wasn t a new name to the PRCA or professional rodeo. Before joining the PRCA in 2003, Creagor, like many professional ropers, had cut his teeth in the many tough amateur associations that Oklahoma and the region has to offer. After multiple qualifications to the International Pro Rodeo Association finals as well as Cowboys Regional Rodeo Association and American Cowboys Association, Trent was ready to step into the professional ranks of the PRCA. The STATS Trent Creagor Born: 1/7/1980 Hometown: Stillwater, OK WNFR Qualifications: 1 Career Earnings: $326,548 Injury slowed his success in 2004 as well as 2006, but everything came together in I placed in 5 of the 9 Tour rodeos last year; the money is so good it helped me get there stated Trent. 3 Trent Creagor cont. 3 P AGE Winning for than $30,000 in ten rounds at Vegas was enough to make him want to go back. The NFR is definitely on my goal list for 2011 stated Trent. Besides his NFR qualification, Trent also won the Dodge National Circuit finals in Pocatello in When asked about his inspiration Trent quickly mentions his father and grand-father. I have only bought three horses in my life because my grandfather has always supplied them. He usually starts them and I ll take them on once he decides their good enough. I am hauling a mare now that came from him; she ll probably be one of the last he sends me. Trent s father is his source for business sense and mental toughness. He really understands the horse business and always tells me to learn from my mistakes and move on. NFR qualifier Mike Johnson is one of Trent s heroes. My rookie year at Houston, I was traveling with Mike and had some success in Canada early on, I was coming back high-call at Houston and ended up sixth or seventh. I was a little mad, but Mike rode up as we were riding out and shook my hand and asked Where else in the world can you go and place and still win ten thousand? At that moment I knew I belonged in the PRCA. Trent Creagor did not reach instant success in the PRCA, but when asked about what it took to finally make it he stated, Hard work, you get what you put in, a lot of runs, and of course resources. Since he has had a taste of Vegas he will surely be back. Go OKIES! *Trent will be in a Match Roping versus Hunter Herrin at the Lewallen Benefit March 20 in Stillwater, OK. Interview: Trent Creagor RN: What do you do when you re not roping? Trent: I like to get away and play gold whenever I can. Last year we went to 100 rodeos and that was tough. The mental stress from a tough August and September made me ready to just be home. RN: What s in your I-Pod? Trent: Everything! From Earl Thomas Conley to Three Days Grace, Nelly, Lil Wayne, and one of my favorites Joel Denison Nubby. RN: Do you have any superstitions? Trent: No hat on the bed. I never was really superstitious about it, but people I ve hauled with got after me for it, so now I don t do it. RN: How do you keep your horses sharp and ready? Trent: Not a lot. Tom is simple, he s his best when he gets pasture rest. May knot rope if were headed to some big calves. Before Omaha last year I just roped a few breakaway and scored then turned him out. This young mare I have coming along takes a lot of riding, I have to keep her tired because she s always fresh. RN: How much do you practice? (rope the dummy, tie-down, ride your horses) Trent: Half a day at least when I am home. If not, like when I m in Decatur at Clint Cooper s, we will rope three or four a day and tie from the post. RN: What do you think about in the box before you nod? Trent: Score! I focus on scoring because a good start makes it all fall like dominoes. RN: What are your 2011 goals? Trent: A 2 nd NFR qualification. I d also like to make the Canadian Finals Rodeo, they re too good to not make. My focus is on the tour rodeos though, last year I placed at all but five, I know I need to do well there so I can be back at Omaha.
