1 The Roper News ISSUE 1 ropernews@hotmail.com February 25, 2011 Remembering Shawn McMullan Shawn McMullan Memorial Roping Saturday Feb Stephenville, TX Almost 15 years after the tragic car accident took the life of PRCA tiedown roper and four-time NFR qualifier Shawn McMullan, the Tarleton State University Rodeo Team continues to honor Shawn with a memorial roping. On Saturday, Feb. 19, tie-down and breakaway ropers competed in Stephenville for more than $27 thousand dollars in prize money. The champion breakaway roper was Courtney Conklin roping three calves in 7.73 seconds; winning $2,800 for the day. Among the tie-down ropers, many were close friends to Shawn. It is a ritual at the roping that Shawn s friends share their favorite stories with his parents who are always present. Jeff Chapman was the aggregate champion with a total 27.3 on three head; totaling more than $6,000 for the win. As well, professional cowboys and cowgirls and 11 thousand fans per night will enjoy one of the top 25 professional rodeo events in North America. The tie-down ropers wasted no time with so many dollars up for grabs. With a 20 foot box and calves averaging 220 the ropers had their work cut out for them. The champion of the first round was none other than Stephenville, Texas roper, E.J. Roberts; getting his first one down in 8.4 seconds to win $1,859. In the second round, Clint Cooper tied his calf in 9.3 seconds to capture the second round win. Adding to his 2011 earnings, the Decatur roper now has over $35 thousand won before March 1 st. 6 6 P A G E San Antonio The San Antonio Stock Show and PRCA Rodeo concluded on Saturday evening Feb. 19 after dispersing more than $1.2 million dollars in prize money to contestants. The tournament style bracket format of San Antonio and the invitation only status with no entry fees makes the rodeo a highlight amongst the winter run. 48 tie-down ropers competed in the four separate brackets, 12 per bracket, four back-to-back rounds. After 16 performances the top five money earners from each bracket, 20 contestants, met for two separate semi-finals performances, 10 in each performance. Once again the brackets dispersed and the top 12 money winners, six from each semi-final round, competed in the finals on Saturday evening. 6-time World Champion Cody Ohl was the finals champion of San Antonio. Winning more than $16 thousand dollars the Hico, TX roper quickly moved into the number two spot in the World Standings. *Amongst the 48 contestants who competed at San Antonio 41 won checks (85%); a true testament to the success of the format at San Antonio as well as the level and consistency of competition.
