1 Lakefield Lead Line L A K E F I E L D F A R M Fall 2018 Barnside Our fall trees are so Beautiful! Whew! What an incredibly busy, fun summer. Our camp weeks were extremely popular, the cow clinic was a blast, and our students super successful at the show, out on the trail and in the arena. We welcomed new boarders, new school horses and added some great staff members. Our barn had a total roof replacement and we replaced all the side lights making our arena even brighter during Twinkle, Star, and Rosemary Since I last wrote, I have discovered a really good gig at Lakefield. Because what s left of my teeth is not exactly what could be classified as prime real estate, I have my human the day. Our outdoor got a new layer of footing and the dressage arena now has new corner rails. Sometimes as we are in the midst of things, I tend to forget all the things that we actually did accomplish and all the fun we have had on the farm. As fall arrives, we start thinking of different activities. We can get out and do more trail rides (if the rain would ever stop!), hopefully free of mosquitoes and flies. We have a Kettle Moraine Trail Ride planned for all that would like to join us. We are going to have a drive in movie night on Friday October 26th featuring the movie Hidalgo There s a Halloween Costume party planned for October 28 at 3:00. As the days get shorter, our thoughts will turn to utilizing different exercises and obstacles in the indoor, to keep ourselves as Star out of the Box trying to find me every kind of supplemental imaginable. It started with some dried alfalfa called Chaffhaye, oh, la de da. I ate it for about a week and then went on a hunger strike. The feeders then took up my cause, and I have free rein over all (get it, free rein?). They let me loose to eat grass. I mow the sides of the barn and the paddocks. I am free to wander around, visit and make faces at everyone whoever bit or kicked me (you know who you are). None of my so-called friends can get me. I am also being fed dried alfalfa cubes (which are soso) chaff, feed, hay and grass. It s well as our horses tuned up. Fall is also a great time to get out some of those books and DVD s on horsemanship and get some fresh ideas. Try Audio Lessons for Equestrians. Join our new Lakefield Book Club! We may slow down a little bit as fall starts to move into winter, but there is still a lot of activity at the barn and so many opportunities to learn. We look forward to seeing you Barnside! Rosanne a regular smorgasbord. For example, a few nights ago I had grain, hay, chaff and hay cubes on hay with a garnish of peppermint nuggets. As everyone says, presentation is everything. I have even forsaken ginger snaps for snacks with a little more zip. I am telling you, this is not the worst thing that has happened to me. Happy fall--death to all mosquitoes and flies!!! 2 Busy Tuesday at the Barn by Cirsten Paine A group lesson is in session in the arena. The sound of hoof beats punctuates the calls from the instructor. Sit up tall! Heels down! Soften your hands! It s a refrain we all know by heart and that we still find helpful. It is a busy Tuesday at the barn, a sultry August afternoon, warm and humid. The sun would be beating down but it is shrouded by the smoke of forest fires, mercifully, half a continent away. Still, the moisture in the air clings like a second skin. Horses are everywhere. The commerce of the farm is in full swing: teaching, training, boarding. High-end SUVs fill the parking lot. The place has the vibe of a successful business at its best. A group of young women, athletic in skin-tight breeches and knee-high half chaps, canter around the jumps in the outdoor arena. Their laughter drifts up to the barn as they slow their horses and check messages on cell phones. A group of friends returns from a trail ride around the property. Their relaxed conversation is evident in their posture, reins in one hand, gesticulating with the other. Out on the practice green, a tall thoroughbred takes jumps with ease as a trainer shouts encouragement to his rider and a lesson horse learns groundwork maneuvers from a student, or maybe vice versa. Inside there is controlled chaos. Hallways are full of horses and riders as saddles go up and come down. The smell of sweat, human and equine, mixes with the smells of hay, leather and barn. Everyone wants to cool off and the shower stall is as busy as a car wash on the Saturday before Easter. Winston, the farm s worn orange tabby, thumps down from the hay loft and, in his pack-aday gravel voice, demands to know where his dinner is. We feel the rain before it starts. The wind kicks up and tunnels through the halls. The temperature drops. Conversations quiet for an instant as girls lift their long hair and smile at the welcome air. It is a quintessential rain shower, soft and unthreatening. In the paddocks, horses eat their hay unperturbed and in the parking lot, nobody runs for shelter. Against the pink of the sunset, the welcome water cools and refreshes, washing away the late summer heat and reminding us all that fall is just around the corner. Cirsten THE COMMERCE OF THE BARN IS IN FULL SWING Page 2
3 Lakefield Book Club! NEW! Join the Lakefield Book Club If you ve ever been in a book club, you know how stimulating and interesting they can be. And if you ve never been in a club, why not give it a try. Yes, we do read the book and discuss it. It is more than a gab-fest! We have our Ladies of Lakefield for that! When: Once a month ( the group sets a tentative schedule for 6 months at a time) Time: 2 hours in the early evening Location: Lakefield Lounge Books: Members each select a book and then they are drawn out of a hat for the order in which they are read. The member who chooses the book, leads the discussion. Many books have suggested discussion questions for book clubs. If you are interested, please contact Wendy wwpeche@gmail.com By October 15th. A planning meeting will be set for the following week. We hope to get 1 book read before the holidays, then resume in Jan, Lease a Horse! Lakefield Farm offers leasing opportunities to our lesson students to help them further their skills, gain more hands on experience and help them determine if horse ownership is for them. Lease opportunities are limited. We are pleased that we do have the following horses soon to be available! Buddy is a super sweet Argentine Criollo gelding. He is loves attention. Buddy rides English or Western, and is great on the trails. He participated in the cow working clinic and has just started jumping. He would be a terrific 4H project. Talk to your instructor if you are interested. LEASING IS A TERRIFIC WAY TO INCREASE YOUR SKILLS AND PRACTICE WHAT YOU LEARN IN LESSONS! Chessa is a Wonderful Quarter Horse who is the perfect match for a child. She is a terrific confidence builder and is as easy to manage on the ground as she is in the saddle. If you want your child to have a great first horse experience, this is the horse for you. We have two others that may soon be available. Let us know if you are interested, we d be happy to answer any questions you may have. Page 3
