8 Big Al s View Of The World In June of 2008 I paid $4.25 per gallon for diesel at the Wal-Mart in Hondo, Texas. As well as I can remember that was the most I ever paid that summer of high fuel prices. Yesterday I paid $3.57 in Cameron, Texas and it was only the 19th of February. Everyone knows that the real high prices don t come around until summertime. What really makes me mad now is that the credit card machine only lets you put $75 per fill up. That means you can t even fill up your truck unless you already had a half tank to start with. It took me $225 to go from Sealy to south of Fort Worth and back. Either I need to become more friendly and split the fuel with someone or get me a Prius with a one horse bumper pull. The other day at the sale barn a 180 pound calf cost $2.10 per pound. That is $378. Throw in a IBR shot, some Ivomec, 1/2 bottle of Excenel and a few sacks of feed and he goes over $400 pretty fast. Kind of makes it hard to practice when one calf cost almost as much as a truck payment. It seems like the only thing that doesn t cost a lot of money right now are roping steers. Of course that could be because there aren t any to be bought. Cattle, feed, fuel and everything to do with them is on the rise with no reason to stop rising in the near future. This brings me to my next item: making money at these high prices. This past weekend I drove all the way to Grandview Wit & Wisdom From Rodeo s Favorite Newsman to a steer roping. Although I had $225 in diesel, $430 in fees and practice cattle at home, that was nothing compared to the producer of the event. The guy had 40 or so steers put together. He had 4-5 people on the payroll. He gave away 3 buckles and advertised. Before the roping ever started he had a pretty good investment made and he wasn t guaranteed anything in return. None of us are ever guaranteed a return on our investment but it only takes a few times with no return to change investment strategies. I had a man call me earlier this month asking about advertising an event they were planning. He said that his church wanted to have some events this spring but was worried that they couldn t make any money on the events. They didn t want to just have them for the sake of having them. They wanted to raise money for the church. We as contestants need to be aware that someone is trying to make a return on their investment when they have an event. We must also realize there is nothing wrong with someone making money from our participation in an event. How many times have you heard someone state that ol so and so was making all the money off of the ropers. Well ol so and so has a very large investment in his operation. He is due a return on his investment. We all have jobs and we all make money and we all purchase things with that money. How long would you have a job if your boss wasn t making a profit with his business? How long 1 Year Subscriptions $25 2 Yrs for $45-3 Yrs for $60 would the local grocery store be in business if they couldn t make a profit? Roping and rodeo producers are the same way. They are entitled to a profit. They are in this to make money or at least break even on their cost if they are doing this as a hobby. I know people that won t go 10 miles down the road to a roping that holds 30% but yet they will travel two hours to a roping that holds 1/3 stock charge from a $150 entry fee. Do the math! What they don t know is that the local roping should be considered practice. 30% stock charge is cheaper than 10 steers eating on a round bale all day. That local practice will make you better for those better ropings down the road. We all have a favorite place to buy groceries or gas. You either go there for convenience, price or service. This is the same for ropings, jackpots and rodeos. We all have our favorites and we go there for various reasons. We need to keep in mind that these guys are doing this as a service to us. Keep that in mind on your ride home from a good run event. Things are only going to get harder as time goes by. We are losing events everyday to the high cost of producing an event. It is more important now than ever that we support the rodeo world. The days of $5 stock charge at a calf roping, a 3 for $20 team roping and.99 cent diesel are over! 9 Fort Worth Rodeo Crowns Champions courtesy of the PRCA The steer wrestling buckles from the two biggest rodeos of the 2011 season so far can be found in the same truck. After traveling partner Darrell Petry picked up one of the biggest wins of his career at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver two weeks ago, Casey Martin added another big-money rodeo to his career résumé by winning the three-head average at the $557,329 Fort Worth (Texas) Stock Show and Rodeo. Martin tied Jake Rinehart for the fastest run of the rodeo (3.6 seconds) in splitting the first-round win, and then won the short round with a 3.9-second run to edge two-time World Champion Luke Branquinho by nine-tenths of a second. The average check alone was $8,328, boosting Martin s total earnings to $15,784 in Fort Worth the richest one-event total of his career. Martin and Petry began traveling together last year and haze for each other at rodeos. Their closeness on the road has been mirrored in the PRCA World Standings. Last year, they were separated by two spots in the final standings (Petry was 38 th and Martin 40 th ). This year, they re both in the top three after their big wins. We were talking about that the other day, Martin said with a laugh, seemingly struck anew by their good fortune. The two biggest rodeos of the year, and we ve won them. Martin said he s off to the best start of his career, but he s not going to start thinking about whether this is the year he qualifies for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. (He finished 16 th in the world in 2008 and has finished 20 th and 21 st in past seasons, as well.) The most I think I ve ever finished a winter with was $15,000; I don t know if I ve ever had $20,000 won, Martin said. It s definitely good to have it now, but I ve got a lot of rodeos to go to yet. After all he has accomplished in two world championship seasons, it might be assumed that saddle bronc rider Cody Wright had no major rodeo titles missing from his resume. Not quite true. While he has earned titles in some prestigious arenas like Pendleton, Ore., and San Antonio, there are a few buckles he wants to add to his collection. Wright marked one more off his list Feb. 5, when he won both the final round and the average. The Milford, Utah, resident earned the title with a total of 253 points on three head. His final ride on J Bar J Rodeo s Tipped Off was the high-marked ride of the rodeo at 91 points. When all of his checks were added up, he earned $12,548 in the Will Rogers Coliseum. Prior to this rodeo, he was ranked fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings with $7,915. The money he won here should move him to the number one spot. It feels awesome, Wright said. That was a great horse and I ll never get tired of getting on horses like that. This is one of those rodeos that people talk about winning and one that you sure want to add to your list. I ve made the short round a couple of times before. To finally get this buckle is huge. Wright missed his oldest son Rusty s district wrestling tournament to be here. He and his wife ShaRee have four boys and one daughter. So, being away from the family for rodeos is a challenge. I hate to miss any of the kid s activities. They are getting older (Rusty is 15) and there is always a lot going on, Wright said. It ll be fun to call them and tell them I won Fort Worth. Cody along with his brothers Jake, Jesse and Alex Wright are all headed to the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo where they start competing on Monday. Steven Peebles had an advantage when he entered the final round of bareback riding at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, a nine-point advantage. To get that advantage, the Redmond, Ore., cowboy had continued on page 10 Ricky Canton Ropings 2011 Henson Dealerships Tour Come Ride with the Henson Brand HensonFamilyDealerships.com March 19th & 20th and 26th & 27th Cowboy Country Arena - Huntsville, Texas Indoor/Outdoor Arena Depending On Weather FM 247 Huntsville,Tx Starts at 12 Noon Saturdays & Sundays Order of Events ~ Cash Only Jr. Tiedown ( boys 14 & under as of Jan. 1,2011 & all Girls) 2 head for $55 The Legends ( men turning 60 in 2011)~ 2 head for $85 Girls Breakaway & boys 12 & under~ 2 head for $85 Open Breakaway ~ 2 head for $65 #00 Tiedown Roping ~ 2 for $105 #1 Tiedown Roping ~ 2 for $105 #2 & #3 combined Tiedown ~ 2 head for $105 Open Tiedown Roping ~ 2 head for $105 Sunday, March 27th will be our ADDED MONEY DAY in ALL of our Ropings!! 10 three rides that averaged three points more than the rest of the 84 bareback riders that were entered here. He won the title by eight points ahead of three-time world champion will Lowe from Canyon, Texas. Peebles had a total of 333 points on four horses to win $9,030. This is the best start the t w o - t i m e W r a n g l e r National Finals Rodeo qualifier has ever had in his budding career. I t means a lot to win a big rodeo like this, Peebles said. This is the best start to the year I ve ever had. Hopefully I can keep that momentum going. The big money winner at this year s rodeo was Kay Blandford from Sutherland Springs, Texas. The barrel racer finished second in the first round of competition, won the final round and the championship with a total time of seconds. It netted her a whopping $17,797.
