1 February 2019 Clover Connection Dear Friends, 2019 is well underway and most of the 4-H enrollments are tuned in. As of January 25 we have 342 members, 94 Clover Kids and 84 leaders enrolled. Continue to recruit your friends! If you have not sent your re-enrollment in please do so a.s.a.p. We have lots of activities planned for the next few months Clover Kid Day, Brunch, Lock-In, Beef Workshop and much more! Information is included in the newsletter or check out the web page. I encourage everyone to get involved in an activity beyond the club level. Discover what 4-H has to offer! Tammy Muller, County Youth Coordinator Welcome, Kayla Emery! Clayton County Extension and Outreach is pleased to announce Kayla Emery has been hired as the K-12 Outreach Coordinator. Kayla is a graduate of UNI. She currently lives near Waukon where she was previously a Head Start co-teacher. She has been involved in 4-H since becoming a Clover Kid herself in Wapello County. Kayla has continued to volunteer in her home county and is excited to bring her own ideas to Clayton County. In her free time she enjoys volunteering in the community, reading and hunting. 1

2 Winter Sports Waivers and Insurance Tis the season for winter recreation. Remember that four activities are not covered by the standard $1/member/year accident injury policy through American Income Life: downhill skiing, tobogganing, sledding and tubing. Those can be covered by a Special Activities policy through AIL. Use the special winter activities waiver located at under Risk Management. 24 Citizenship Meeting, 2-4 pm, West Union The Month of February is: American Heart Month Black History Month American History Month Children s Dental Health Month International Friendship Month Cherry Month Wild Bird Feeding Month 2019 Clayton County Fair Purple Ribbon Fundraiser Saturday, February 16 Doors open at 5 pm, dinner served 5:30 7:30 pm Buck-a-Roo Bash Johnson s Reception Hall, Elkader A countywide Clover Kids Day for K-3rd grade students will be held Saturday, February 23 at Johnson s Reception Hall in Elkader from 9:30 am 3:30 pm. Activities will include games, music, crafts, story time, food and FUN! $15 registration fee due by February 15. Register online at After February 15, call for availability. Late registration fee is $20. The Clayton County Fair Board is hosting a fundraiser to help support the daily activities and costs of the Clayton County Fair. Without community support the Clayton County Fair would not be what it has been in the past and in the future! Dinner, door prizes, silent auction, 50/50 raffle, live auction, and guest speaker. Guest speaker is Michele Matt who is a native of Elkader, Iowa. She will help change your mind and attitude! Titan Restoration Program Tickets are available by contacting Anna Troester, Jim Fuelling, Jim Hoth or Mark Troester. Tickets are $15.00 prior to event and $20.00 at the door for adults. For children 10 and under, tickets are $10.00 and 3 and under are Free. The Antique Tractor Restoration Program, sponsored by Titan Tire, is receiving applications for H and FFA members can register to receive donations of front or rear tires while supplies last. 3 4-H Creates Opportunities Region 4 Summer Intermediate Adventure Trip Screaming for Adventure! Join us for 2 days and 1 night for the H Intermediate Summer Adventure Trip. Youth will be staying overnight at a motel in Le Mars, Iowa. LeMars is the ice cream capital of the world. The adventure includes stops at the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor, along with Browns Century Theatre and fun at Arnolds Park. Arnolds Park features a thrilling ride for everyone Relive the exhilaration of your first amusement park ride and do some screaming of your own on the newly renovated track of the Legend Roller Coaster. Open to all 4-H members currently in 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades. Trip will be June 12 & 13. The registration fee is $ and is due by April 15 to the Extension Office. Space is limited. For more information on the trip, contact your County Extension Office. The Clayton County 4-H & Youth Development Committee through Circle of Friends donations will cover $25 of the registration fee for this trip. Plus the Clayton County 4-H Foundation Board will pay up to $50 towards the trip. There is an application process for Foundation funding. With the two generous supporters the Adventure Trip costs to Clayton County 4-H members is only $75. Hockey Game Opportunity Dates for the Waterloo Black Hawks annual 4-H Family Nights are March 23, March 26, April 2 and April 5. $8 tickets Like past years, the discounted tickets are available to entire clubs or individual families, and as always, the 4-H rate still applies to everyone in the family, not just the 4-H member. There is one notable change compared with past years: due to inconsistencies and occasional notification failures with the web-based ordering system which we have previously used, the 4-H rate will NOT be available online at this time. Pine Bluff 4-H Camps Expand your world, add to your passport and enjoy the great outdoors at Pine Bluff 4-H Camp near Decorah! Tube the Upper Iowa River, bunk in primitive cabins, night hike through Pine Bluff Forest, navigate your taste buds, team building, cultural painting, warrior dances, and enjoy games from around the world. This camp is a 2 day 1 night adventure with new friends, cabin team challenges, games, and so much more! Camps are scheduled for June 6-7 or June The registration fee is $65.00 and is due by April 15 to the Extension Office. Space is limited. For more information on the trip, contact the Extension Office. The Clayton County 4-H & Youth Development Committee through Circle of Friends donations will cover $25 of the registration fee for this camp. With this generous support, junior camp is only $40 for Clayton County 4-H members. Wanted: 4-H Camp Counselors Attention High School 4-H Members! Do you like the outdoors? Are you up for adventures with junior 4-H members? Then being a 4-H camp counselor may be for you. We are looking for 4-H youth counselors to provide leadership in partnership with 4-H Staff at the Regional Pine Bluff 4-H Camps. Both junior camps are 2 days and one night. Junior camps will be June 6-7 and June Sign up for one camp or both. Must currently be in 9th-12th grade. Contact the Extension Office for an application form. Deadline to apply is April 15. County Fair Update: Optional carcass classes for swine, sheep and meat goats has been added to the 2019 fair schedule. Youth must enter the class when making fair entries by July 1. There will be a $5 per head entry fee, but no additional cost due to a generous sponsor paying the scanner s mileage. This is an optional class, only those who wanted to participate would enter as many fair entry animals as they would like to scan. 3

4 Archery Opportunity Echo Valley Archers have opened their indoor range, located in the Stephens Building (show pavilion) on the Fayette County Fairgrounds to all enrolled Clayton and Fayette County 4-H members, 4th grade and older, interested in learning more about archery on Saturday, February 9 from 1-3 pm. This is a free event but Fayette County needs to know the number of youth attending. Please contact the Clayton County Extension Office by Thursday, February 7 if you are interested in attending. There will be waivers to be signed that day from the Echo Valley Archers and SESS program, so it is important that youth, (of all ages) be accompanied by a parent to get the signatures on the forms. 4-H Lock In is March 22 The Clayton County 4-H Lock-In will be held at YMCA in Postville on Friday, March 22 starting at 8:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, March 23. This event is for youth in grades 6, 7 & 8.4-H members are encouraged to invite a friend from 6 th, 7 th or 8 th grade. Pre-registration is required and due to the Extension Office by March 14. The registration fee is $10.00 per person. Late registrations will be $15. All 4-H'ers and their guests must pre-register. No one will be permitted to stay without a completed Iowa 4-H Medical Information/Release Form. Registration forms can be found on our webpage Youth participating will be asked to bring a snack or beverage to the event. A letter will be sent prior to the Lock-in with the assigned items and a participant list for car pooling. WANTED: Adult chaperones for the Lock-In. Contact the Extension Office. Stay all night or part of the night. We need chaperones in order to host this event! Youth Loans Available Farm Service Agency has youth loans for livestock projects available. Check out the website or visit your local FSA office. webapp?area=home&subject=fmlp&topic=ryl 4-H Brunch is March 10 The Clayton County 4-H Omelet Brunch will be Sunday, March 10 at Johnson s Reception Hall in Elkader. We are also having a silent auction. Clubs, families, and individuals are asked to donate items for the auction. Be creative! Proceeds from the auction help with the county s share of the 4-H Development Fee and offset some of the county 4-H program costs. Clubs assigned to work a shift to work at the brunch are 9:00 AM -10:00 AM Peppy Pals/Mendon Hustlers 10:00 AM -11:00 AM Jefferson Go Hawks 11:00 AM -12:00 Noon Lodomillo Leaders 12:00 Noon 1:00 PM Woodcenter Eagles Five (5) youth and at least one adult are needed for a shift. Duties will include making toast and serving applesauce, muffins, toast, and beverages; helping carry plates & beverages for the elderly and others who may need assistance, plus clear tables when necessary. 4-H members are asked to sell tickets for the Brunch. Tickets are $7.00 in Advance and $8.00 at the door. Tickets were put in your club boxes. All advance ticket sale money and unsold tickets should be returned to the Extension Office by April 5. Beef Workshop This year s Beef Workshop will be Saturday, March 30 at the Scott Cherne Farm near Osterdock. The emphasis will be on reproduction. Frosty, a life-size Holstein calving simulator will be one of the sessions. 4-H'ers will have the opportunity to get a hands-on calving experience, all while not creating any risk to youth, the cow or the calf. 5 Leader s Corner Clayton County 4-H Foundation Fundraiser Wine & Dine March 16, 2019 Promiseland Winery, Guttenberg Required Leader Training If you missed the face-to-face required leader training for H Fosters Independence, the training is now available in an online format. Volunteers may access and complete the annual training online via 4H Online, and must do so no later than July 1, Resources and supporting documents for this training may be found under Volunteer Resources at volunteerresources. Steak Supper served 5-8 pm, Music by Beau Timmerman $30 per person. Advanced ticket sales only Attention: Clover Kid Leaders We will be hosting a Clover Kid Leader meeting on Monday, March 18 at 6:30 pm at the Extension Office in Elkader. Youth Filed Specialist, Kendra Crooks and County Youth Coordinator, Tammy Muller will be sharing what curriculum & kits are available to use for your Clover Kid meetings. Summer Staff Position Clayton County Extension & Outreach is now accepting applications for the Summer 4-H & Youth Program Assistant. Duties include assisting and promoting the 4-H and youth program during the summer months, assisting with County Fair activities, community day camps, and other related duties as assigned.
