7 LOCAL, STATE & NATIONAL NEWS CITIZEN WASHINGTON FOCUS Liberty Mathis, 2015Grand County Representative On June 20, 2015, 35 4-H delegates from Colorado met at the Denver International Airport. We got on a plane that took us to Washington D.C. We stayed in the dorms at the National 4-H Convention Center. There, the states were divided up into color groups where we wrote bills regarding water privatization, drones, and mandating vaccinations. These bills were to be presented at the Court in Session on Thursday night where we would go through the court process to either pass or fail the bills. Within each state, we got to choose a committee to be on. There was a Communication, Government, Healthy Living, and a Talent Show Committee. I chose to be on the Healthy Living Committee. With my committee I helped organize games for the derby that was held on Wednesday night. There was also a promotion committee that put posters in the cafeteria to promote healthy eating. When we were not in our workshops or committee meetings, we were exploring the city. We got to tour the monuments and learned about the rich history of Washington D.C. We traveled to Mount Vernon and explored George Washington s estate. On Thursday evening, we went to the Kennedy Center and watched the off-broadway performance of Sheer Madness. It was a life changing experience, and I highly recommend it to other 4-H members! I learned so much about the government and 4-H in other states. I made many friends and am thankful to have gone on the Citizen Washington Focus Trip of Middle Park 4-H Senators Madison DeCicco and Meghan Cameron, along with Abbie Halley, attended the Colorado Sate 4-H Conference June There we attended workshops with keynote speakers from across the country. Both speakers sought to empower us, by teaching that it was important to work towards our goals and by ourselves. We also listened to a presentation by IFYEs. The IFYE program was represented by a returnee from Finland and Germany and three members from the United Kingdom. We were able to explore CSU s campus by visiting the equine facilities and through a scavenger hunt. The county ate dinner with the rest of District 11 and 12 for county night out. There we discussed possible themes and workshops for the next district retreat. It was decided that the theme would center around building a fire within ourselves. The senators also attended meetings and elected Zane Powell as State President and Jayden Hilferty as Vice President. The week was brought to an end with a banquet and dances MPF&R NEWS The application deadline for 2016 royalty contestants is July 17. The Fairboard would like to encourage girls 8-18 yrs of age who are interested in trying out to fill out your application now and join Princess Erica Weimer at her appearances this summer. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure and practice for the Royalty Pageant taking place during Fair where we will be selecting the Queen and Princess to represent us during the 100th year of the Middle Park Fair and Rodeo. For more information and questions please contact Dalene Harthun or Janet Engel. Demolition Derby Saturday, August 15th Middle Park Fairgrounds Redneck Mudshuffle was held June 20th at the Middle Park Fairgrounds. A Huge Thank You to Kitty and Joe Docheff family and everyone that worked so hard to put on this great event! Volunteers Volunteers are who help put on events all year long. 9 COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES The Middle Park 4-H Council is looking for volunteers to help with landscaping on July 21st and 22nd! We will be building two sitting areas at the Middle Park Fairgrounds: one will be along the large arena and the other will be placed along the small arena. Our goal is to beautify the fairgrounds as well as to provide shade and make spending a day at the fairgrounds more enjoyable. We will need help with laying down lumber for a small fence, planting flower beds, and placing tables. The larger sitting area will be along the large arena. It will include the small play set, picnic tables, and a flower bed. the other sitting area next to the small arena, will have two flower beds bordering a set of bleachers. In these flower beds we will planting Xeriscape perennials. This means that they will need only a small amount of water. On the back of the large bleachers on the East side of the arena, we will plant 4 or 5 large shade trees. We will be starting at 9:00 am on both days. This is a great community service project! If you would like to help, please contact the Extension Office to sign up Property for Sale, Proceeds to benefit Middle Park 4-H Scholarship Program In 2006 the Middle Park 4-H Council received a 35 acre property near the Old Park subdivision in Kremmling. This land was donated from the Merrit Esmiol Estate to be sold and used for the 4-H Scholarship Program in Grand County. Because the Council was not set up to handle the sale and legal issues that came with the property it was forwarded to the Colorado 4-H Foundation for assistance. In August 2012 the Colorado 4-H Foundation received word that the property will be released from probate to be available to list and sell. The CSU Extension Office in Grand County is working with a local real estate company to list and manage the sale of the property. Upon sale of the property, and paying legal and closing fees, what funds are left will go to the Middle Park 4-H Scholarship Fund. The property is located just off Colorado Highway 134 towards Gore Pass. It is not in the Old Park Subdivision but it is right next to it.
