Compiled by Lida Robbis. z IN THE NEWS Warre Weibert, a 1969 graduate of Kasas State Uiversity (K-State), was hoored Nov. 15 as the recipiet of the 2013 K-State Aimal Scieces & Idustry Distiguished Alumus Award. The Distiguished Alumus Award is give to a outstadig K-State Aimal Scieces & Idustry alumus each year. These award wiers are successful idustry leaders who have bee selected by the departmet faculty. Weibert has served as presidet of the Kasas Livestock Associatio, presidet of CattleFax ad chairma of the board for Kasas Agricultural ad Rural Leadership (KARL). Weibert grew up ear Durham, Ka., workig o his family s farm ad cattlefeedig busiess. Sice 1977, Weibert ad his wife, Carol, have operated Decatur Couty Feed Yard i orthwest Kasas ear Oberli. Through the years it has grow from a 18,000- to a 40,000-head-capacity operatio with 130 active rach customers across the coutry. He said that it is strog commuicatio that allows his feedyard to be efficiet ad successful, but the automatio ad electroics used i the feedyard are what really sets it apart from the rest. Weibert said he believes i the meaig behid you caot maage what you do ot measure. I 1994, they implemeted a electroic cattle-maagemet system that allows them to track each idividual aimal from the time it arrives at the feedyard util it goes through the packig plat. A electroic ear tag is attached to the aimal at the time of arrival at the feedyard. This ear tag helps match data to the correct aimal ad documets it automatically i their system. Each aimal is also idividually measured usig ultrasoud, video imagig ad electroic scales to determie back fat, frame score, weight ad projected feed efficiecy. Whe the cattle are ready for market, they are the sorted by the system accordig to their optimum fiish dates. Cattle are sorted ito market groups where they are valued idividually accordig to a value-based grid. This allows producers to be paid based o the value of their beef, ot the commodity price set by the market. After cattle are sold, idividual aimal reports are set to the producers. The data icluded i the report reflects the merit of each aimal icludig the dollar value, feed efficiecy, quality grade ad more listed from highest to lowest et retur. Producers ca see exactly what characteristics, costs ad gais were attributed to every aimal to better uderstad why certai aimals were more profitable tha others. With this iformatio, rachers ca improve their herd ad begi geetic improvemet to create a better cotrol over their future reveues. Leo Kleema got his start i the Agus busiess at 8 years old whe his dad, Bert Kleema, gave him a bucket calf out of a Agus-cross milk cow. He later sold that calf to purchase a show steer, which bega his lifelog love of the showrig. I the mid- to late 1950s, Kleema started buyig registered-agus heifers for his herd. The iitial purchase was from Joh ad Cecilia Eck of Pierce City, Mo. Kleema s reputatio for quality cattle quickly spread throughout the Ozarks. I 1961, whe he was 20 years old, he exhibited both the champio bull ad female at the Ozark Empire Fair Juior Show i Sprigfield, Mo. Both aimals were sired by a Earl Marshall so. Also that year, Kleema was hoored with a Missouri State 4-H Proficiecy Award ad wo a trip to Chicago, Ill. Throughout the years, Kleema has worked for may cattle operatios, icludig the Eque Platatio, Miter, Miss., ad Blue Sky Farm, Kearey, Mo. He became kow for a kee eye fittig cattle, ad while with Eque he fitted for the Texas circuit, where they showed the champio female ad reserve champio bull, Equemere 1406, owed i partership with the famous actor Fred MacMurray. Gleoda Farms hosted its first productio sale i Maagers J.B. McCorkle ad Tom Burke made sure the day was a success, ad cattle legeds Ray Simms ad Harold Hery served as auctioeers. To cotiue efforts to expad ad improve the herd, i 1973 Kleema purchased 96 Wye-bred females from M.Q. Farms, Hastigs, Neb. He was also a pioeer i carcass data collectio, ad i 1994 harvested a pe of 44 Agus steers that graded 96% Choice, with 67% qualifyig for the Certified Agus Beef (CAB ) brad. Kleema ad his wife, Gleda, raised two daughters o the farm, Gia ad Laa, who both showed steers ad heifers durig the late 1970s ad early 1980s. Gia showed the overall champio steer at the 1983 Ozark Empire Fair, ad Laa raised the most profitable pe of steers i the 1982 Southwest Missouri Feedout. I 2011, Leo ad Gleda received the Missouri Agus Associatio Pioeer Award for their years of dedicated effort to the Agus breed. Today, Gleoda Farms is home to about 300 head ad cotiues to sell registered-agus bulls each year. Kleema has bee a life member of the 36 ANGUSJoural America Agus Associatio sice The Associatio presets the Historic Agus Herd Award to Agus breeders or immediate families who have bee i cotiuous productio of registered-agus cattle for 50 years or more. Sulphur Valley Agus Farm, Fayetteville, Ark., has bee awarded the Historic Agus Herd Award by the America Agus Associatio. Robert Tustill fouded the herd i November 1960 with the purchase of three bred Agus heifers. For $160 each, he brought them home from the herd of the late Keith Shafer, Fayetteville, Ark. Throughout the years, the herd was built by oe or two Agus heifers at a time, purchased either from state associatiosposored sales or breeder sales. The Sulphur Valley Agus Farm adopted artificial isemiatio (AI) 30 years ago ad saw herd geetics improve greatly by usig prove multi-trait sires. Tustill also actively records calvig weights through Agus Herd Improvemet Records (AHIR ). Together with his so, Daiel, Tustill cotiues to maage the herd today. The Sulphur Valley Agus Farm ow cosists of 25 head of Agus cattle. Tustill has bee a member of the Associatio sice Carrie Horsley bega her duties as director of marketig ad public relatios for the Agus Foudatio Ja.1, Origially from Galva, Ill., she grew up o her family s farm raisig cor, soybeas ad beef cattle. Merck Aimal Health partered with KLA to host 20 members for a series of four semiars throughout Attedig the KLA Covetio was the fial sessio for the class. The three-day evet provided participats the opportuity to gai additioal idustry kowledge ad iteract with other KLA members from across the state. Immediately prior to the covetio, YSA class members received their Master of Beef Advocacy degrees, followig a i-depth spokesperso traiig sessio with Natioal Cattleme s Beef Associatio (NCBA) Seior Executive Director of Commuicatios Dare Williams. McCabe was a member of the Natioal Juior Agus Associatio, ad has bee a regular member of the America Agus Associatio sice z IN PASSING Elsie Covey, 83, Sohomish, Wash., died Dec. 23, 2013, at Swedish Hospital i Seattle, Wash., surrouded by her lovig family. Elsie was bor May 20, 1930, i Philadelphia, Pa., to Albert ad Elsie Drager. At the time of her death, Elsie was a member of the America Agus Associatio ad the Elsie Covey Wester States Agus Associatio, servig the latter for decades i may leadership capacities. She was also the Washigto State Agus Auxiliary treasurer at the time of her death. Elsie was the first female presidet of the Sohomish Couty Cattleme s Associatio. Elsie ad her late husbad Jim s Alderhurst Farm is i the Wester Washigto Agus Breeders Hall of Fame, ad, i 2006, she ad Jim were hoored whe the Wester Natioal Agus Futurity i Reo, Nev., was dedicated i their hoor. Elsie held may offices i the Agus world, icludig servig as a director, first vice presidet ad committee member of the Wester States Agus Breeders Associatio. She also served for decades i the Washigto State Agus Auxiliary. I 2007, she was hoored to judge the Miss America Agus pageat, ad was ofte voted either a delegate or alterate delegate to atted the America Agus Associatio aual covetio o behalf of wester Agus cattle breeders. Elsie ad Jim bought their first Agus cattle i 1970, ad Elsie cotiued maagig ad makig the breedig decisios for her herd up to the very last day of her life, talkig with her daughter Holly about plas for show heifers i Her favorite cow was the great Miss Supreme Pie 8405, Piey, the 1985 Cow Palace grad champio ad 1991 America Agus Associatio Embryo Dam of the Year, producer of 14 Roll of Victory (ROV) award wiers, may atioal champio heifers ad high-sellig bulls, ad the most famous ico of the Alderhurst Farm breedig program. Elsie was amog the first cattle herdsme i Washigto to utilize embryo trasplat techology to improve her herd, ad she delighted i studyig breedig ad geetics, researchig pedigrees ad keepig herd statistics. After Jim s death i 2010, Elsie cotiued the herd with the assistace of Tom ad Darci Toth of Muks Farm, Aacortes, Wash. Her graddaughter Cassadra Garcia, 16, is also ivolved with Agus cattle, showig ad breedig her ow juior herd ad keepig the Alderhurst Farm legacy goig. Elsie was social ad ivolved her etire life with helpig people, supportig her childre, gradchildre ad great-gradchildre. Elsie is survived by daughters Hope ad Holly; sos Jo ad Todd; three gradchildre; three great-gradchildre; ad oe step-gradchild ad her childre. Augusta (Shee) Cattey, 90, of Brookfield, Mo., died from atural causes Ja. 1, 2014, at Heartlad Regioal Medical Ceter i Sait Joseph, Mo., after a fall earlier i the week. She was bor Aug. 11, 1923, south of Brookfield to Clarece ad Theresa (Tillma) Shee. She graduated from Brookfield High School. She bega her Augusta Cattey career as a bookkeeper for the former Brookfield Chickeries. O Jue 11, 1954, she married Nelso Cattey i Brookfield. She was a member of the Missouri Agus Associatio; a former member of the Missouri Cow Bells; a life member of the America Agus Associatio sice 1969; Gamma Omicro Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Social Sorority ad the Catholic Uits Bridge Club. Augusta was a amazig mother, gradmother ad mother-i-law. She greatly ejoyed feedig those aroud her table with the produce from her garde.
