1 Cardinal Newman Catholic School Key Stage 3 Curriculum Planning Year 7 Overview: - Physical Education Unit 1 Baseline assessment Assessment of physical capability Netball assessment Cardio vascular fitness Agility Hand eye coordination Students will be assessed in their ability in the set areas listed opposite. This will identify the students fundamental physical development up to that point. Preparation - Ensure you have the correct kit for the appropriate activity as specified by your PE staff prior to the activity. 2 Netball Game play introduction to invasion games Passing & receiving Footwork Marking & dodging Positional Roles Rules & officiating Students will develop their knowledge through game play. Students will learn to perform and use the three basic passes, land and pivot whilst in possession of the ball, use space effectively and mark and dodge other players during gameplay in order to outwit their opponent. Students will also learn to umpire a game in order to ensure fairplay. 3 Badminton Racquet sports introduction Hand eye coordination skills Service (Long serve) Clear Drop shot/net shots Students will learn to outwit opponents and select the appropriate badminton shot to be successful in a competitive game. Skills are developed throughout the course to give a wider skill base to select from to achieve ever greater outcomes. 4 FMS Fundamental movement skills of physical activity Agility multi activity Agility moving at pace Invasion game concepts Invasion competitive situation Hand eye coordination Throwing/Catching Hand eye coordination Bowling/Batting This unit will develop the students fundamental physical movement skills. Through a series of movement based dynamic actions the students will gain muscle memory skills and proprioceptive capability. This will enhance their game play and physical preparedness for activity. Curricular clubs to further develop and enhance their

They will understand the basic key terms associated with dance and will develop their kinaesthetic awareness and aesthetic appreciation. Students will develop their knowledge of basic gymnastic skills through the performance of a floor sequence. They will understand basic key terms associated with gymnastics as well as develop their kinaesthetic awareness and aesthetic appreciation. Students will develop their knowledge through game play. Students will learn to dribble the ball effectively in order to outwit their opponent, pass and receive the ball whilst on the move and over a variety of distances, control the ball using different parts of the body, shoot effectively, mark and tackle their opponent successfully and develop their knowledge of positions/roles and responsibilities of each player. Students will also develop an appreciation of the rules and regulations of gameplay, demonstrating this through effective refereeing. 8 Fitness suite Healthy active lifestyles Fitness suite Cardio vascular kit Fitness suite Resistance kit Pulse rates and maximum heart rate Students will learn how to use both the cardiovascular and resistance kit safely and effectively. Students will also develop their understanding of pulse rates and maximum heart rate and will learn to use pulse rate as an indicator of fitness.

Ground strokes Service Backhand Strategy/Tactics This unit will continue to develop the students fundamental Athletic competence. Students will gain an awareness of requirements for each athletic event. This will develop core and upper body strength and give them key indicators of their Athletic capabilities. Students will learn to outwit opponents and select the appropriate Tennis shot to be successful in a competitive game. Skills are developed throughout the course to give a wider skill base to select from to achieve ever greater outcomes. Curricular Athletics club to further enhance their Coventry Schools Competition happens during the summer term in each year group. Curricular Tennis club to further enhance their Inter school fixtures happen throughout the summer term. 11 Rounders skills of rounders Underarm/Overarm throwing and catching Long barrier Bowling technique Batting technique Rules and regulations Students will learn how to perform different types of throw and develop an appreciation of when to use each type of throw in a game situation. Students will also learn how to use the long barrier, batting technique and bowling technique effectively as well as develop an understanding of the rules and regulations associated with gameplay. Curricular Tennis club to further enhance their Inter school fixtures happen throughout the summer term.

Tag game and introduction of try line Responsibility of the tackler to tackle within the laws of the game. Safe tackling build up: -Tackler position: Cheek to cheek -Being Tackled: Knee/Hip/Shoulder -Scramble on floor/crawling game/ Tracking a player/tackling from side/ Tackling from the front. S/S/Game as per lesson 1 with the addition of tackling. What to do when tackled. Pupils to recap tackling extend the w/up phase Why we use the scrum? Build up of body position. Use of Tower of power Pupils to work in 3 s. 2 working 1 assessing and coaching. 1 man chicken scratch S/S/Game introduce scrum for fwd pass and knock on Observation of rugby matches Observation of different types of passing. How many types of passing can you identify? How do players stop an opposition player from scoring? Observation of tackling in rugby match Grade tacklers based on your knowledge How do the types of tackles differ? How are breaks in play restarted? Observation of scrum in rugby match Any infringements commonly occurring based on your knowledge?

Pupils to rotate and experience differing positions on front row. Passive scrums in S/S/Game context. Recap tackling pupils to grade each other as extended Warm up. Body position and angle for driving position, Chicken scratch extended warm up Pupils to work in 5 s. 3 working in lineout, 1 throwing the ball in and following in to set the ball at the back of a maul. 1 assessing /coaching/scrum half Pupils to rotate roles in the lineout. Develop into competitive practice against another 3 pupils, who attempt to get hands on the ball. S/S/Games using the lineout for any balls going into touch Kicking to touch discussed and rules that apply Warm up Pupil led. Pupils should feedback on levels for the leader of W/Up. Recap tackling pupils to grade each other as extended Warm up. Body position and angle for driving position, Chicken scratch extended warm up S/S/Games assessment to take place. (Summative assessment) Observation of scrum in rugby match Any infringements commonly occurring based on your knowledge of the scrum? Watch a rugby match on television and observe the lineout technique learned in lesson See if you can pick up any rule infringement s in the lineout or the following maul What other ways do the players use to distribute the ball Observation of rugby Watch a rugby match on television and observe the techniques learned in lessons See if you can pick up any rule infringement s based on your knowledge Plenary of whole course objectives
