President s Report Prepared by Daniel Kelly Season 2013/2014 a huge success for the club! We continue to build the success of our club year-on-year and this season was no exception. The club pursues its increasing participation and excellence in long course racing, where we have recorded incredible results across 70.3 and IronMan racing, from our first timers to age group wins. Considering the membership size of our club compared to the larger clubs on the east coast, we have established ourselves as one of the premier Triathlon clubs in the country and this is something to be extremely proud of. Looking at some of the key focus areas for the club, the season has been a real positive Club membership Record numbers, exceeding 280 members for the first time. Lady Lakers Record numbers, exceeding 80 members for the first time. Strong Social focus Offering both competitive and family friendly events outside of Triathlon. Communications Weekly newsletter (52 weeks of the year) and increasing our use of social media. Quality training Strongly supported training across all disciplines from experiences coaches. Presidents Past and Present Dan Kelly, Kev Fergusson, Mark Kirtland, Darryl Tozer, Vincent Tremaine and Nathan Warburton (Left to Right) P a g e 1

We have also had some memorable moments and achievements around the club, some highlights have included - Iron5for55 Kevin Fergusson (Life Member) has taken on a challenge of competing in 5 Ironman s at the age of 55, in the pursuit of raising $55,000 for Cancer Research/Awareness. On top of this, Kev is aiming to win all 5 races in his age group and chase course records. Only Busso remains. Club Seminars - in response to the member s survey, this year we introduced Club Seminars to provide members with additional training/information to assist with their goals. We conducted two of these and they were a great success. Lakers in Kona in 2013 to continue our participation in Hawaii and have a group of members qualify to race in Kona at the Ironman World Championships. In 2014 we are proud to have 17 Lakers heading to Kona. This is a state record and Australian record from any club. Annual Presentation dinner - was a huge success, with the biggest event we have ever put on for members. A real highlight of the evening was securing the services of Pete Murray as our guest host for the night. Life Membership Induction it was a pleasure to induct Vincent Tremaine into the Laker Life Membership at this year s Annual Dinner. Vincent has dedicated an enormous amount of time to the club and has been a major contributor to our success. I would like thank our committee for their hard work over the season. We have an extremely dedicated and passionate team behind the scenes, who this year has worked at making some changes and continually looking at ways for improvement. I hope you find the 2014 Annual Report an informative summary of the season that was, we have achieved plenty and can look forward to growing the club for years to come. Thank you to all our members for your continued support and no matter how big or small your goals are, best of luck for the season ahead. Bring on Season 2014/2015! Cheers DK P a g e 2

Training and coaching Prepared by Nigel Pietsch Training continues to be a major focus for the Lakers triathlon club Grant Fergusson continues to offer 2-4 quality sessions per week, offering technical and performance advice to a wide variety of Lakers. Numbers remain solid all year round. Monday night open water swim rotated between Henley Beach and West Lakes. At times lane space can cause crowding, but we are a little restricted with availability. Tuesday rides offer a hard early morning wake up ride for the clubs stronger/keener riders. Thursday ride offers a great opportunity for all levels of athletes to ride together. There have been some deviations from the standard pattern to suit the stage of training. We could probably do a better job of promoting these changes. Saturday rides continue to grow, to the point where the club now offers 4 levels of ride. Ongoing work is being down to ensure the rides are safe and suit all levels of athlete; however the influx of new members will always create issues. The key is having great personnel in charge of these rides: o James Clough o Steve Diamond o John Baines o Kevin Fergusson o Nigel Pietsch Tuesday runs have held the mark this year (a little down on last year) most likely due to changes in people s training to suit the variety of Ironman races around the year. The range in ability that presents has been fantastic and there is a strong core group of runners out the front that set the standard for all. There has been a drop away in the lower grades but they are starting to return. Thursday runs attract a smaller but very consistent bunch of runners. Moving the start out to 6.15 pm for the Henley sessions appeared to offer greater opportunities to participate by members. Sunday runs are thoroughly enjoyed by members and the aim is to extend the hills season into the season. The new runs at Brighton have worked a treat. Nigel's inability to run at these sessions, I am sure is a major reason why participation is not growing. But there is still a strong core of athletes who attend and enjoy the sessions. P a g e 6

The consistency of sessions provides a real strength for the club. Opportunities exit to offer more development type programs for beginners and the club is exploring options here. The one beginners program conducted by Nigel (as a part of his business) in February 2014 was very well received and showed that there is both an interest in these sessions, and a clear need. Athletes Many Laker members performed at a high level on a national and International scale. Jack Tierney was the stand out this year as he burst on to the national Junior scene. Sam Boag has continued to prove she is a world class athlete. Kevin Fergusson is in a league of his own as he chases the Iron 5 for 55. Andrew Carracher was the standout age group athlete for the year. Nancy Cullen's third place finish in Kona stood out amongst our many great female age group results. Brad Wauer continues to grow as a professional athlete. Best rising stars Dave Bairstow and Tracey Koetzee, along with Ben Christie and Michael Wilson show we have plenty of talent coming through the ranks. Break out races by Mardy Hunt and Ashley Gordon were also recognised on presentation night. Sarah McEachern and Ray Schliebs showed that no matter what end of the age spectrum you are there are always plenty of improvements that can be made, winning the most improved awards. Tony Brady and Michelle Mufford flew the flag strongly for the Lakers at the local state series races. The growing cycling component of the club is very exciting, and Jason Rowland was a standout performer this year. Gavin Lutze was recognised with the coaches awarded for his dedication to the sport, even when faced with massive barriers, living on a farm, near a small country town, 2 hrs from Adelaide. The 17 members qualifying for Kona was a huge achievement that we are all extremely proud of. P a g e 7

Events The Lakers calendar of events offers an interesting mix of challenging individual and team activities. The island swim continues to grow in scale thanks to the continued efforts of Rick Daley. Switching to an out and back option, while removing the aura of swimming around the lake, proved a very popular change and made it more welcoming and easier to manage. The Tour De Bakery remains a staple for the club for over 25 years. Thanks again to Nick Muxlow for taking the reins this year. The 5-25 run serves a great lead in race to the winter running events. A shift to the west beach surf club worked a treat, and the venue perfectly suited a 10/40 session for those aiming for the Adelaide Duathlon championships. The summit run continues to be a well-supported event. Course changes may be considered for next year to remove risks associated with the final stretch into Norton Summit. Work needs to be done to ensure greater participation, through the promotion of the various relay options available. The changes to the Christmas adventure run was well received as we entered the 21 century using mobile phones to check in answers. The Chris Mehaffey Memorial ride was well received and brought a number of old faces out for a ride. Timing the ride with the summit run weekend is perfect. The 7 peaks ride attracts a small but enthusiastic crowd. It is a real challenge that could become a strong feature of the calendar. Coinciding the ride with Kona is a good way for the club to experience a little bit of Kona magic 12000km away! Racing While Lakers continue to support races all around the globe, finding ways to boost involvement in the local state series events is a goal. With the world Duathlon championships in Adelaide next year, along with a host of new events on the calendar targeted specific races as key Lakers events is being investigated. P a g e 8

Cycling Prepared by James Clough The Lakers Saturday morning ride has continued to be a well-supported weekly training session. The three different groups catering for differing levels of experience and fitness. Steve and John have done an outstanding job of managing these groups. Group 2 in particular has seen a regular core group develop this year which I see as a positive going forward. Group 1 continues to see a strong group of cyclists tackling challenging and different routes each week. Tuesday morning rides have been well supported again this year. A core group of experienced cyclists riding this ride. A route change has been implemented this year to move the ride off Magill Road. Thursday mornings sees various numbers of members meeting at Eagle on the Hill as a meeting point from various rides. From a racing perspective, The Blue Train criterium team flew the Lakers flag in local cycle racing circuit seeing some good results and great camaraderie amongst Lakers team mates. Team members appreciate the ongoing support of the Lakers committee and the support for the new cyclist of the year award presented for the first time at the annual prize giving. In addition to the above the year ahead will see the Lakers cycle event come to fruition and the publishing of cycling information for current and new members on training rides and racing opportunities on the Lakers website. Lakers on Willunga Hill Tour Down Under 2014 P a g e 9

Swim Prepared by Grant Fergusson The last 12 months of the swim squad has seen a large increase in numbers of people wanting to learn how to swim. There has been 9 Lakers or friends of Lakers who have since joined the Club that could not swim 25 metres in their first session. These Lakers now regularly swim over 2000 metres each session. Although numbers normally drop off over the winter months this year has seen 25 plus lakers swim regularly on a Wednesday & Friday. 1 lane has now set aside specially for Lakers going to Kona (and others who want to swim longer) and this lane is now swimming sets between metres. The introduction of the Monday morning ocean swim was popular with a few hardy Lakers and it s likely that this will start again in October when daylight saving commences. Any Lakers are welcome to come and try the squad sessions and the first session is free. Lakers Round the Lake Swim 2014 P a g e 10

Club Captain Prepared by Cam Maher What a great year it has been for the Lakers as a club. Record membership, high attendances at all races (local, interstate and international) and above all a great group of people to associate with. From my point of view it has been really exciting watching the club grow and go from strength to strength, particularly welcoming all the new club members into the Lakers family. I know I don't get to as many training sessions as I would like, but it is fantastic when we see new faces out at training and everyone seems to go out of their way to make them feel welcome - this is one of our clubs strongest points and something we should all keep encouraging. Lastly a huge thanks has to go to the Prez (Dan) and the First Lady (Anna) for the amount of work they put into this club - there is no way we would be in such a strong position without them. Also our Head Coach, Nigel Pietsch, puts his heart and soul into training and getting the best out of each of us and we are very lucky to have such a quality person and coach around the club. Lakers ready for Ironman Western Australia P a g e 11

Marketing and Communications Prepared by Anna Kelly In order to continue to develop our point of difference and offer our members additional benefits we developed the Lakers Seminar Series in The first of the seminars covered Race Day Nutrition which was attended by over 50 people with some great feedback from members and other clubs. This seminar also supported club sponsor Wakefield Sports which they were happy with. Thanks for setting up the Nutrition Seminar! As someone who has only ever done shorter distances (Sprint, Challenge & Olympic), I found it really useful given I am currently building a base towards this year s Murray Man The second seminar Strength and Conditioning for Triathletes proved even more successful than the first with over 90 people registering for the event. These events proved very successful and will be something that we continue in the future. Facebook has had an increase in traction this year with more and more people using it to communicate with each other and also share results and race information. This ensures that the Blue Train is reserved for club based information only. Race day presence was consistent this year however with so many races we may need to look at ways to prioritise the tent or get more people helping out. The New club polo was introduced to be ready for the start of the 2014/15 season. This will again add to the race day presence locally and ensure everyone feels part of the team. With over 90 tops ordered this is a great start and I have no doubt that when people see the tops they will be wishing they ordered one too. All in all a good year for the club with membership growing and great success at races. P a g e 12

Sponsorship Prepared by Vincent Tremaine The Club continues to receive generous support from a number of long term Gold sponsors. In particular: Adelaide Commercial Flooring (Shaun and Kylie Richards) Think Water (Mark and Lee Kirtland) Minter Ellison (Andrew Short) Flight Centre Active Travel (Shannon Stacey) Safeco (David Adams) Veederline (Tony Brady) More recent Gold supporters include: Energy Scene (Tiziana Sordillo) Living Green Landscaping (Frank Bennink) Xterra Wetsuits (David McGlashan) Fitness Frontline (Damian Grant) We limit the number of Gold sponsors to ensure that we provide strong exposure through the website and The Blue Train Weekly newsletter. In addition Minter Ellison, Veederline and Healthwise Active Travel adorn our touring polo shirts. We also have three Bronze sponsors: PAB Carpentry (Paul Battistella), Body First Massage (Jackie Tan) and Wakefield Sports Clinic (Anthony Meade). The Club appreciates the support and urges all members to support the sponsors. P a g e 13

Lady Lakers Prepared by Felicity Lloyd It s been another great season of fun, and camaraderie for the lady Lakers. Not to mention some amazing performances. We are able to continue to introduce females into our training environment where they can meet others and train in an inviting environment. The sheer weight of awesome female members at the club ensures that. It is always fantastic to see when you attend a Lakers training session that there isn t a dominance of males over females (except of course our ladies only events). We have continued the focus this year of triathlon oriented events for Lady Lakers. The continuation of the lady Lakers ride was a success. It provided many of our less experienced riders once again the chance to get out in the group ride environment. Although we did answer once and for all how many Lady Lakers it takes to change a tyre and the answer is zero, you ride slowly to the bike shop they ll do it! We also added the Lady Lakers race to the calendar. It was great to see a few faces out at the race that had never raced before, and a couple of faces who haven t raced for a while who came along to join in the fun! Looking forward to adding more of these events to the 2014/15 calendar. Maybe a swim and a run! Lakers Christmas Adventure Rune 2013 P a g e 14

Assets and Uniforms Prepared by Helen Shepherd Members continued their support for the club by wearing the Lakers kit at variety of at race events, scheduled training sessions and just out and about Adelaide and SA when cycling or running. The banded leg design for cycling knicks and tri shorts has continued to be popular and as well as the new polo and tee-shirt. It has been very pleasing to see so many club members turned out in the distinctive Lakers kit during 2013/14. Trips Prepared by Lisa Murphy We had no Lakers utilise our annual booking at Coomealla for the State Series Event held there in December 2013 for accommodation but we filled 10 rooms quickly for the Kingston SE event in February at the Kingston Motel. Next season includes the Melbourne Marathon for many Lakers and this continues to be a popular event with many travelling over for the race. Social Prepared by Nick Muxlow 2013/2014 was another successful year on the social side for the Lakers. Key events included the annual Tour De Bakery, End of Season Dinner and Round the Lake Swim as well as the introduction of the Lakers Seminar Series. All events were well attended by club members including a record turnout of 130 for the End of Season Dinner. Given the success and large attendance of the events the club will continue to plan and improve these events for club members in the coming season. P a g e 15

Memberships Prepared by Jason Rowland Another fantastic membership achievement. The Lakers grew membership for the 10 th consecutive year. Importantly the rate at which our membership has grown is increasing. It s great to see a big jump in Lady Lakers up a whopping 28%, even better considering a slight decrease for the previous year. Congratulations to our Lady Lakers Manager, Felicity Lloyd and the rest of the Lady Lakers for their dedication to assisting new members to our club. A large increase in non TSA members/social, especially in the female ranks. This is due to the Lakers willingness to let people have a go before committing to a full TSA racing membership. Many new members go on to become full TSA racing members which is a great outcome and shows the team spirit, fun environment and welcoming nature which is strong point for the Lakers. Can we crack 300 members next season? An initiative by TSA and the Lakers has seen a new membership model put in place for season All memberships, including full racing and non-racing (social) are now available online via the TSA membership portal. As a result, our social members will now also be TSA members which will help grow the sport in SA.
