1 ISSUE 6 OCT 2016 Newsletter proudly supported by Finance & Insurance made easy And sponsors PMTC Newsletter Hi all, Happy October! Well it was great to see so many turn up for our opening race, the Enriched Healthcare sponsored Come and Tri on the 9th of this month, with 67 starters! A big congratulations to Reis Maurer, a disabled athlete, who completed his first triathlon with the aid of Glen and Belinda. The smile on his face when crossing the line was priceless. There has been plenty of members competing in various sports this weekend, including the The Forster Elite Energy Ultimate Triathlon and Washpool World Heritage trail run. Also the CSF trail running series. Keep up the good work people. Our next race is the Innovate Body & Mind Studio Sponsored Women's only triathlon on the 23 Page 1 of 8
2 October. Bring along your friends, ladies, who have always wanted to do a triathlon but were too afraid to do so. And MEN, come along and support the girls and cheer them in. Happy training. David Duathlon Jerseys are here!! For all those who completed all 3 of the winter duathlon series and have not yet got their long sleeve t-shirt, please contact Tanya Porto or Jody Marson to organise collection. Women s Only Race This weekend sees the annual Womens Only triathlon sponsored by Innovate Mind and Body Studio at McInherney Park. It s short course format and registration is from 6.15am to 6.45am for a 7am start. We also need male volunteers for this so please contact Rachel Sanderson to help out! 2 nd Race Sunday 30 th October The 2 nd graded race of the season is on Sunday 30 th October. Short course and long course formats on offer registration is from 6.15am to 6.45am for a 7am start. Volunteers required so please contact Rachel Sanderson to get you volunteer spot ticked off. Grading this Season Grading for the first 5 races are self-seeded, however we expect people to recognise the grade they should be in and compete in that grade accordingly if you were Grade C last season but have now improved please seed yourself into the appropriate grade. After Race 5 competitors will be allocated into the Grade that reflects their performance and then you are competing in that grade to maximise points and take out the grade championship. Hopefully this doesn t sound too complicated as it s based on the same algorithms used in previous seasons, but if you have any questions please ask Rachel Goodwin who is managing the points this season Club Membership Following the 1 st Race being a Come and Tri anyone who is not a club member by Race 2 on 30 th October will be unable to race. This will be checked at registration, so if you are uncertain about your membership status, please check via the Triathlon Australia website on We obviously don t want to have to turn competitors away, so please ensure you are enrolled Club Championships As many of you are probably aware, Triathlon NSW have in their wisdom of expanding the world of triathlon decided to relocate club championships from Forster to Orange. Seeing as this puts a bit of extra travelling time on the journey from PMQ, we are looking at logistics and options for attending. Page 2 of 8
3 Therefore there will be a Club Champs Expression of Interest (EOI) list at Race 2 and successive races, so if you fancy attending, put your name down and we will organise a plan of attack over the coming months Coaching If you are interested in improving your results this season, a number of club members run their own coaching groups for more information about what s on offer, the contact details for each coach are: Mel Cockshutt (His Coach / Her Coach) Belinda and Ben Johnson (SMART Coaching) Mick Maher (VO2 Performance) Mike Reid (PMTC Life Member) Superwoman Darleen Cheney reports from The Gloucester Mountain Man Challenge this month. Billed as "the triathlon with a difference" the event offer a 30km mountain bike ride, 10 km kayak paddle down the picturesque and challenging Barrington River and a 10 km run back into Gloucester. I've been wanting to compete in the Gloucester mountain man challenge for about 10 years but it always fell on the same weekend as my soccer grand final. This year I put it on my bucket list of races to do. A saying always sticks in my mind "Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. If you do the training, have the right gear, eat right and know the course and its cruxes then race day should all come together. One week before the race I I checked out the paddle leg down the Barrington River with my trusted guide Singe who had all the local knowledge and looked like she had paddled the river many a time. The river was exhilarating! Very different from the ocean and river paddling I d been doing in Coffs and Forster Adventure races. The river rapids threw up some challenging gnarly bits with overhanging trees and bony shallow areas to negotiate. I had dressed for ocean temperatures and was quickly reminded when I flipped my boat that the Barrington is like an ice bath! My boat choice this year won't be my choice ever again! Anyway onto the race. I felt prepared. I went to the pre-race briefing and carb load. The local church ladies had cooked all the food and even catered for gluten intolerant folks. It was delicious. I was invited to stay with Singe and her mum Sheila which was a lovely welcome to Gloucester town. Singe greeted me with a bottle of wine. (I had decided to abstain before the race but that went out the window). Race day dawned and the weather was perfect. I wrangled up to the front line and was greeted by last year s female competitors and place getters Sue Pretto and Bree Turner. They both moved over and made me feel welcome. The race started on a long tarred stretch of road and wound its way out of town for 7km before hitting dirt and cow paddocks. The start of the 30 km ride was like a road race. It was quite exhilarating riding along with the front pack in peleton like style. The pack was tight and as it was winding up in speed so was my concern with having my wheel clipped by another rider. Lesson number 1, hold your nerve or you'll be dropped. We rounded a sharp bend and I got Page 3 of 8
4 pushed back in the squeeze. I worked with the chasing pack but we just couldn't catch them. Oh well time to focus and work together. Once we left the tar the dynamics changed for everyone. Time for some steep cow trails. The countryside was beautiful. The riding wasn't technical thankfully as I've done very little MTb riding in the past 2 years. We rode through paddocks and endless water courses. I learnt that riding over dry cow dung is like hitting a rock; something to be avoided if you want to stay upright. About 2 km out of transition I could see Bree ahead of me. I worked hard to close the gap and ran off the bike into 2nd place, little did we know that Sue was just 2 minutes ahead.. Time for the 10km paddle leg. I jumped in my kayak as Bree was getting in, and I watched as she paddled away! My Kayak wasn't the worst choice for the race but it definitely wasn't the best either. I focused on the main objective, not to fall out. In my practice run I fell out once. In the race I bettered that. 3 times! I had to drain the boat to get back in and just keep on paddling. I was in 3rd place at this stage. I just kept paddling, finally I saw the bridge that brought me to the end of the paddle leg; I was glad that was over. A quick transition into my running gear and off I went across another paddock. I felt fantastic. Maybe it was the repeated dunking if had. I felt fresh and my pace felt great. The run finished with a lap around the local sports oval and it was fantastic to run through the finish line. The organisers, property owners and competitors created a fantastic atmosphere. I came in 3rd overall, 1st in my age group and had the fastest overall run time for a female. Sue came 1st, 1st in age and fastest ride. Bree came 2nd fastest in age and 1st in paddle! Sue Pretto is an inspiration. She is 54 and still the Queen. It's definitely worth putting in your bucket list Page 4 of 8
