It was a good night for the green and gold army as first Zarck Visser and Rushwahl Samaai took silver and bronze in the long jump then Wayde van Niekerk added another silver to the kitty in the 400- metres and Sunette Viljoen made it four medals from athletics with silver in the javelin.
SA Athletes in action Visser s best jump of the night was his second effort of 8.12m while Samaai opened with an 8.08 and was unable to improve that as Olympic champion Greg Rutherford took gold with an 8.20m best on the night. Read more on: add- four- medals- to- team- sa- tally/ Job done as South Africa earn right to take on Australia By Gary Lemke South Africa survived a jittery last 10 minutes but did enough to hold on for a 3-2 win over India that catapulted them into the women s hockey semi- finals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and a date with Australia.
Team SA Hockey team Captain Marsha Cox, the most experienced player on the pitch with 345 international caps, admitted that it wasn t the best performance, but it is the three points that matter so we ll settle for that. It was a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde performance from the South Africans, for whom Lisa- Marie Deetlefs was making her 200th appearance, because they controlled the match for long periods, before letting the less inexperienced Indians back into the game. Read more on: done- as- south- africa- earn- right- to- take- on- australia/ Triumphant swimmers have done South Africa proud By Gary Lemke There were a few bleary eyes that told a thousand stories, but most importantly they told the story of a united and dedicated swimming squad that said its goodbyes to Glasgow and headed back to South Africa, having again done the country proud.
SA Team at a medal celebration press conference Perhaps it was Cameron van der Burgh, the winner of the 100m breaststroke gold medal in the London Olympics and who got a full house of medals at the Commonwealth Games this past week gold (50m breaststroke), silver (100m breaststroke) and bronze (400m medley relay) who summed it up best. The team spirit amongst these swimmers is the best I have ever experienced. We ve become like a family. And like any big family, there is always one outstanding child. Chad is that child. Happiness for Hogan and Fredericks but not for Van Zyl By Mark Etheridge It was agony and ecstasy for Team South Africa s two hurdlers in the morning action of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday.
Cornel Fredericks in action The smiles belonged to Cornel Fredericks as he cruised to victory in the second of three 400m heats, winning in 49.26sec to automatically book his place in Thursday s final. Read more on: for- hogan- and- fredericks- but- not- for- van- zyl/ Wrestling Women s freestyle, 58kg, Round of 16: Norma Gordon lost to England s Sarah Grundy on points. Grundy won the first period 6-4 and the second period ended 2-2, so Grundy won 8-6. Women s freestyle, 53kg, quarter- finals: Mpho Madi lost to Lalita Lalita, of India, by great superiority a difference of six points without getting a point with Madi winning 10-0 in the first period. Madi then took on Shannon Hawke, of Scotland, for the bronze medal and went on to grab another medal for Team SA when the 26- year- old beat Hawke 5-0 by virtue of a fall.
