3 Editorial President s Report Miscellaneous News I have just had a most pleasant weekend officiating at the South Island Masters Track and Field Championships in Dunedin. Admittedly the weather was not the best with conditions being more like winter at times however the organisation and the competition was exemplary. The championships were run along different lines in that the Masters programme was combined with Otago Children on Saturday morning and Otago Seniors on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. After discussion at the South Island meeting during the lunch hour it was agreed that we should try to maintain this format and seek inclusion in the ANZ South Island Championships next year. Book Review A great way to update your knowledge on masters athletes is to have a read of a book just onto the market that has been written by a masters athlete who has been a competing member since The book is called Age Shall Prove No Barrier In The Pursuit of Excellence and consists of short stories on some of s Greatest Veteran/Masters Athletes. Athletes include Marge Allison, Marie Kay, Chris Schultz, John Gilmour and Peter Crombie. The author, Mike Hall, showed his publication skills back in the 1980 s when he personally produced a quarterly national magazine for our sport. This magazine provided great articles on athletics and athletes in the lead up to the first World Masters Athletics Championship held in in Similarly this magazine published some great stories after these world championships. Mike s love of masters athletics shows through in this book. He selected thirty different athletes to research and write about. In the Foreword, Mike states that the prime objective for compiling the book was to highlight these particular individual performances and to provide recognition they richly deserved and to offer inspirational guide for readers to set their own personal goals. 5 Article Article PHOTOS: Sharon Wray North Island T&F Championships by Michael Wray We had all sorts of weather in Hastings for the North Island Masters Track & Field Champs with only one constant - the wind. On the Sunday in particular, the sprinters were complaining about battling head winds recorded at 8.6 m/s, with the 5000m runners pointing out they ran into that 13 times! And the long jumpers on the other side of the track cursed the wind for nullifying any potential records. It was brutal and I expect all Hawkes Bay residents to never moan about Wellington winds ever again! The race programme for the distance events in this meet represented a departure from the usual North Island format. The 3000m had been moved from being the final Sunday event to a Friday evening spot in place of the 5000m. The latter had been shifted to Sunday morning and the 10km Road Run removed altogether. I notice the South Island championships have usually been conducted in this way, so this means we now have uniformity. I don t know which approach will be adopted in future North Island championships but I hope we stick with the change. The 3000m is not a part of the National programme, due to it not being contested at any IAAF outdoor championships. As a result, you rarely have the opportunity to race the event properly. It s nice to be able to race a 3000m against worthwhile opposition when fresh. Previously one had to choose between being fatigued by earlier events or not participating until the final event of the championships. The Friday competitors experienced a whole range of conditions. Early rain gave way to sunshine, before settling on heavy hail showers and thunder storms. The sanity of the throwers for wanting to continue with metal implements during a lightning storm in the latter stages of the day has to be questioned! I hope they showed appreciation to the officials. The + shot put and the female weight throw competitors were lucky enough to complete their activities before the worst of the weather, kicking off the championship when the weather seemed fine and only enduring rain showers. In the weight throw, the competitors Bev Savage and Barbara Austin recorded the best distances. Waikato s Peter Crawford () and Borge Stannits () were particularly impressive, with the latter smashing the championship record and out-throwing most of the younger athletes. Borge also picked up the record in the hammer throw during a period when the weather was at its worst while his regional team mate, Johan Van Zyl, was doing the same thing in the shot put at the other end of the field. The 3000m track walkers started in time to enjoy bouts of heavy showers. Only six lined up for the start and they were soon splashing their way through the many puddles on track. Wellington s Jacqueline Wilson was the sole walker to break 20 minutes, but regional team mate Daphne Jones took the plaudits by breaking the championship record. The 400m runners took to the track, contesting several different heats. Vanessa Story dominated her race, while Julia Lile and Meghann Stewart staged a close finish to be second across the line. Julia edged it by just 0.20 seconds and Meghann missed the championship record by a mere half second. In the men, although not marked with the all-important R in the results, Hayden Robinson beat a record that had stood since Bruce Solomon came within 0.03 seconds of the record. In the gap to the 3000m run, the rain had cleared up and the wind managed to remove most of the puddles from the track surface. William Twiss led for the first 900m, setting a strong pace. Then Michael Wray took over, closely followed by fellow Andrew Davenport. Andrew made a break in the approach to the start of the bell lap. Michael gave chase, but was unable to match the finishing speed and Andrew won in 9:31. Both broke the previous championship record, which Andrew had set in There were no records under threat in the women s race, but Michelle Van Looy had a close race with Karyn McCready before moving ahead for a comfortable winning margin of 19 seconds. By Saturday morning, the wind had picked up. On the plus side, it meant the rain and thunder clouds weren t able to stick around. Borge Stannits picked up where he d left off the day before, this time throwing new records in the javelin. Laurie Malcolmson did the same for the s to break a record set in Tony Price - 1st 3000m in 10:30.34 Vanessa Story - 1st 400m sprint in 1:02.52 The 2000m steeplechase featured five competitors, where the action consisted of two sub-races. Graeme Adams and Des Phillips raced off in the section, in which Graeme emerged the victor after pulling away after about 1km. The s had experienced steeplechaser Andrea Williams (Lambert) against recent convert Michelle Van Looy. Andrea s experience saw her through to the win, just four seconds outside her own record. Brendan Magill ran solo in the 3000m steeplechase, but he inadvertently provided entertainment to the crowd by shushing the timekeeper after the first lap with a cry of no times please! Just before lunch Borge Stannits was at it again, picking up his fourth record this time in the weight throw. Johan Van Zyl followed the example, securing his second record after lunch. After lunch, Borge added the discus record to complete the full set of throws records. Over at the high jump Gary Rawson, who was getting his money s worth by competing in many different events, set a new record to take another one away from the class of 99. In the s Murray Andersen was creating an interesting situation by equalling a record that was already jointly held. Blair in 1998 and McGregor in 2006 are now joined by Andersen in The 60m and 100m sprints were held either side of lunch, almost all into head winds though there were a few who managed to time their heat just right to grab a brief tailwind as the lunchtime swirls turned back and forth for a little while. Despite the wind, both Vanessa Story and Julia Lile beat the 60m record; Vanessa claimed the record by 0.04s. Gideon Hanekom claimed the record in a close contest with club mate Dennis Langford. Other 60m records went to Bruce Solomon (), Gary Rawson (), Laurie Malcolmson () and Malcolm Fraser (). Did the 60m runners have some kind of custom wind-break? There were a few false starts in the 100m, but Gary Rawson and Malcolm Fraser held their composure to take their second sprint records. Given how close Laurie Malcolmson came to another record despite a 6.1 headwind, he must have wished his heat had been more fortuitously timed. The women s 1500m threw a three-way race across different age groups. Michelle Van Looy () overcame a fast start from W45 Karyn McCready before unsuccessfully trying to pressure Meghann Stewart. 6 Vetline - January 2015 Vetline - January

6 PHOTOS: Sharon Wray Article Meghann led from the start, eventually claiming the record from previous holder namesake Judith (who I assume is no relation). The men s 1500m threw up a similar race to the previous day s 3000m with the same three runners: Andrew Davenport, Michael Wray and Bill Twiss all, as before, finishing in that order. On Sunday morning the 10km Road Walk took place in the adjacent car park. The metservice had issued an extreme weather alert that included a wind warning for Hawkes Bay. Perhaps this was responsible for so many competitors scratching, with only three finishers in an event won by Jackie Wilson. The 5000m, starting nearly two hours later, was also a windswept affair. Without the runners who had beaten them in the 3000m, both Michael Wray and Karyn McCready were able to run to easy wins. Well, as easy it can be running into wind readings up to 8.6 every half lap. The long jump was conducted at the same time, with a tail wind, but none of the wind readings came in anywhere near the legal limit for record claims. The 200m tested the wind-worthiness of the sprinters, especially the female runners who had the worst of it. Vanessa Story and Julia Lile continued their duel. As before Vanessa won, but it was a very narrow margin. Gary Rawson managed to run in two consecutive, or near consecutive, heats running once for the 200m and then again for the pentathlon. Remarkably, his Meghann Stewart broke the Nth Island record in the 800m with a time of 2:30.83 second run was into a slightly stronger wind and was slightly faster. In the female 800m, only two runners competed when over half the field withdrew. Consisting of one and one, it effectively meant two separate solo runs took place. Meghann Stewart attacked her run regardless and added the 800m record to the 1500m she d earned the day before. Despite also having some withdrawals, a full heat of eight men lined up. Andrew Davenport and Andrew Sexton fought out the lead as Michael Wray chased. Andrew Sexton and Michael Wray both came within a few tenths of a second of their respective PBs, but Andrew Davenport galloped to the win anyway. The championship s track events concluded with the hurdles. Andrea Williams (Lambert) set a new 400mH record, bettering the record she already held. As it happens, there are only two female 400mH championship records on file - the and and Andrea holds both. Rounding up the combined events, Dennis Langford secured a new points record. The only surprise was seeing Borge just miss out on the throws pentathlon record. In his pentathlon throws on the Sunday, he couldn t quite reproduce the performances of the last two days in enough of his attempts. 9 Article Article South Island T&F Championships by Mike Weddell The championships were held at the Caledonian track in Dunedin from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 November and was run in conjunction with the regular Children s and Senior Saturday programme, this concept worked well. The weather was not so good being cold and windy on Friday evening and Saturday morning although it was warmed and the wind dropped in the afternoon. The wind returned with a vengeance on Sunday morning and the temperature plummeted producing the odd shower and some hail. Noni Callendar in the Hammer Throw Wayne Doyle in the Pole Vault Despite the weather there was good competition and some very good performances which can be viewed in the accompanying results. There was an excellent barbecue at the conclusion of events on Saturday evening which lead to a visit by the local fire brigade. A vote of thanks is due to Fiona Harvey as chief organiser ably assisted by Jo Hurring and Claire Giles. The venue for next year s championships is yet to be determined. 11 Article New Zealand Road Relay Champs by Michael Wray PHOTOS: Sharon Wray Article Christchurch usually hosts the NZ Road Relays Champs on a four year cycle, hence its popular assignation of the Olympics of Road Relays. Given Athletics NZ s habit of awarding national championships to events whenever they celebrate a major anniversary, it has been known for some time that the 2015 NZ Road Relays will also be held in Christchurch for the event s 75th birthday. So it was a surprise for the 2014 hosts to be Christchurch again, which means we will have three consecutive years on the same course. I don t know whether it is a definite fact, but my understanding is there were no willing alternate hosts this year. As the Takahe to Akaroa relay is an annual event, being a local race inbetween national years, the absence of other locations makes it an ideal fall-back option for ANZ. Fortunately, it s a relay that offers a bit of everything. There are flat laps, uphill laps, downhill laps and laps with a mix of everything. If anyone feels bored by having the same course used three years in a row, just run a different lap! The organisers do a great job, appearing to have the execution of the race down to a fine art; the cumulated experience of 75 years has not been wasted. And a particularly nice touch is the tradition of providing custom-made flax batons, individually painted to match the club colours for each team. In the s race, the usual contenders are Athletics Nelson, Papanui Toc, Hamilton Hawks and Wellington Scottish. The Scottish team had been decimated by injury. Anyone looking under the hood to the team selections would have known that Scottish would not be troubling the podium without the assistance of a torn hamstring or popped calf within the ranks of the competition. Not that the other teams were unscathed. Each missed out on their top runner: Nelson were lining up without Phil Costley, Papanui without Richard Bennett and Tony Olsen was absent from the Hawks. Scottish eschewed assigning their lap order according to the strengths of each runner, instead electing to put their fittest runners on the first two laps, hoping to delay the inevitable fall from grace as long as possible. Michael Wray lined up for the first leg, alongside Jason Baillie for Papanui, John Kennedy for Nelson and, last year s fastest lap one runner, Andrew Wark for Hamilton. Wray brought Scottish home in front with the fastest masters lap time, with Baillie and Kennedy neck-and-neck seven seconds behind. Hamilton passed over in fourth, a further 13 seconds back. It didn t take long for the chasing pack to haul in Scottish. Jim Jones found himself behind all three of the contenders within a kilometre, bringing the Scottish challenge to a close. From this point on, injuries notwithstanding, it had been established what teams would make up the podium and the only question was the colour of the medals to be awarded to each. Papanui dominated the following laps, with their runners posting the fastest lap times. Granantan Boyle was fastest on lap two and Anthony Duncraft in the s for lap three (actual fastest time seems to have come from the social grades and former Papanui member Jeff Spillane). Hamilton and Nelson were rotating between second and third while Papanui were extending their lead to almost 90 seconds. Kerry Faas for New Brighton Olympic and Simon Yarrow for ACA both ran faster masters times in the senior grade on lap four, but in the race it was Glen Sexton who ran the fastest time to return Hamilton to second spot. Papanui had Don Greig, who ran the fastest time. The fifth leg enjoyed a brisk tail wind. This was great news for all involved, not least because it took away the sand flies that lap five runners are usually forced to snack on while running. Papanui had their in-form runner Chris Mardon and he continued his great form with the fastest time. Hamilton s John Crane, another one enjoying a season of rich form, set a new lap record. Over the final three laps, Nelson recorded the fastest lap times through Simon Leaning, Peter Versey and Graeme Taylor. However, they left their charge too late and couldn t close the gap to first or second and had to settle for bronze. At the front of the race, Marc Scott put his specialist skills to good use to pass Mark O Reilly in the penultimate lap. Hamilton were in the lead for the first time. Darren Hoolahan chased Kent Hodgson from 14 seconds behind to no avail; it was Hamilton s national title. The Open 50 grade promised to recreate the excitement of the 2013 contest between Nelson and Wellington Harriers in which Wellington had prevailed. Nelson started with a bang, with Neil Jim Jones - Scottish team Whittaker running the fastest time on lap one to secure a 21 second lead. ACA s Ken Walker took the lap two honours and took the lead away from Nelson, relegating Wellington to third place. Nelson s Ian Courtenay recorded the fastest lap for the third leg, reducing the gap to ACA to a solitary second. By this time Wellington were two minutes behind, albeit under no pressure from North Canterbury in fourth. The title was ultimately decided in lap four, when Bill Revell took 90 seconds out of Malcolm Chamberlain. Nelson s grip on the lead only strengthened with each successive lap. At the same time, Liam Healey ran a storming lap for Wellington with a time only bettered by Don Greig running in the race. From two minutes behind ACA, Wellington moved into second place. While they never threatened Nelson for the gold, Wellington remained comfortable in the silver medal position for the rest of the race. The fastest times for laps six and eight came from outside the top teams. Al Monro for Auckland University and Glen Ferguson for Otago which livened things up for the sixth and seventh place teams. The podium race for bronze managed to produce a little more drama. ACA maintained the gap back to North Canterbury during the day until the seventh lap, when Joe Ford s downhill performance put the South Island team in the medals at the start of the final leg. It was a brief dalliance with the podium however, as ACA had saved one of their better runners for the anchor leg and David Lear secured bronze for the Aucklanders. I m not sure whether the Open 60 grade that was introduced on a trial basis in recent years is yet a permanent fixture of the Road Relays. I hope it has or Scottish Masters Women winning team of Rachel Cunningham, Michele Allison, Melissa Moon, Lindsay Barwick, Tricha Sloan, Mandy Simpson, Katie Kemp and Anne Hare will be passed. Certainly in my club, the opportunity to compete for medals without having to still be as fast as the O50s is a popular innovation. The race itself was not one for the neutrals this year, with the top three teams staying clear of any chasers. Nelson led from start to finish with five of their six runners recording fastest O60 lap times only Tauranga s Gavin Smith prevented Nelson from cleansweeping the individual boasting rights. Tauranga themselves secured silver without straying from that position, although third place Auckland University stayed within 30 seconds until the final two laps and eventual fifth-place finishers Takapuna threatened in the early stages. The masters women featured last year s top four teams and all four were expected to be in the hunt for the medals. Wellington Scottish are used to winning this grade, while Port Hills and Hamilton Hawks are usually on or near the podium. After their formation last year, the Otago Athletics super club (formed of runners transferring from other clubs for relays) have also become contenders. The fastest MW time came from another grade, where Lisa Brignul was running for a mixed Sumner team. For the race under review, Port Hills Heather McKenzie gave her team the first baton change. Scottish followed 30 seconds behind, then Otago and Lake City. Hamilton found themselves more than three minutes behind in fifth place. Everything moved around in lap two. Mel Aitken ran the fastest leg time and moved Otago up two spots and into the lead. Scottish passed Port Hills to maintain second, while Hamilton put themselves ahead of Lake City. 18 Vetline - January 2015 Vetline - January

12 Article The musical chairs continued into lap three. This time it was Hamilton s turn to move up through the field. Kristine Milne ran fastest lap to pass all three runners ahead. In the space of just two legs, Hamilton had moved from fifth to first. Conversely, Otago slipped from first back to fifth. After sitting in second place behind three different leaders, Scottish became the next to take their turn at the front. Rachael Cunningham produced the fastest lap time to move ahead of Hamilton. Lake City and Otago now found themselves out of the podium spots and that s where they stayed, despite Sue Cuthbert picking up a fastest lap on the hill climb for Otago. For the next few laps, Scottish and Hamilton took turns to share the lead, while Port Hills tried to stay in touch to varying degrees of success. The gap at the front shifted between three seconds and two and a half minutes as each team played their stronger runners at different times. The decisive break came in the final two laps, where Scottish runners Anne Hare and Katie Leck recorded the fastest lap times to turn a deficit of two and a half minutes into a title win by more than six minutes. Hamilton suffered badly in the final leg, starting in first place and finishing in third as Port Hills surged for silver. Hamilton still took bronze, but Otago had closed to within 36 seconds by the finish. A special mention should go to Pakuranga s Penny Peskett, running leg five in the senior women and breaking a MW record that had stood for 30 years Cross Country Season NSW Karen on the dias (R) for 3rd place in the NSW short course Cross Country championships In June the NSW Cross Country Championships were held at Nowra, on the south coast of NSW. This Championship event has been held on a farm at Nowra for over 20 years, and included the local club, Nowra Athletics Club, hosting the n Cross Country Championships in The course is typical of a NZ style cross country course without any fences,. There was a big steep hill at the back of the course that runners had to negotiate; It was so steep nearing to the top that runners were reduced to a walk. Unfortunately runners no longer need to tackle the hill, with the Article course diverting around it. However, the course is still mostly undulating with lots of short steep hills and very little flat area, only at the start. Karen competed in the women s 6k event and finished in a creditable 2nd place, with a time of 27mins 21. In July the NSW Road Relay Championships were held at Ourimbah, on the Central Coast of NSW. Each relay runner completes a 2 x 2km circuit, which is mainly flat, with a steady climb at the back of the course. Karen was a member of the Hills District Athletics Club 45+ women s team which placed 3rd. The final cross country championship event was held at Upjohn Park in Sydney, The NSW Short course Championships are held over 5km for women and men, instead of the usual 8/10k distance. The course is undulating, with short, steep hills, with 300m flat at the start. Karen competed in the + 5km women s race and finished in 3rd place with a time of For the teams event, as all women run in the one race, Karen was also a member of the Hills Women s 45+ team. Her placing amongst the 45+ women of 6th, counted towards the club winning the teams title. In winning the title the club beat the Easts Women s team for the first time this season. by Karen Petley As a member of the Hills District Athletics, Club in Sydney,, former Hamilton resident Karen Petley has recently completed a successful 2014 cross country season. Along with the various NSW Championship events that are held each winter Karen also competes for her club in the Metwest Cross Country events held every weekend throughout the winter months. The Metwest competition is organised by volunteers from the various local clubs in Sydney. Races are held over many different cross country and road courses throughout the winter months. This competition attracts upwards of 100 athletes each week from all ages. It provides great competition no matter what your ability. There is a choice of 3 races, a 2km for the younger aged athletes, a 4km event and an 8km event. This season she won the + women s trophy for the most points scored. Athletes have to compete in a minimum of 9 events over the winter season to be eligible for the poinstscore competition. Karen amassed 100 points over 10 events to take out the trophy. The first major championship event was the NSW Cross Country Relay Championships held at Sylvania. The course is based at a local park, which features a few short sharp hills and one long climb. Each year rain has made the course a lot tougher for athletes to negotiate. The Hills Club women s 45+ team which came 2nd in the NSW cross country relays This year was no different with a damp surface to negotiate. Karen was a member of the Hills Women s 45+ team which finished 2nd in the teams competition. The winning team, was from Easts the top club in Sydney in the women s divisions. Noni Callendar - Award Winner by John Stinson Nationally ranked Otago Masters throwing events specialist, Noni Callander was the proud recipient of the East Otago Masters Sports Person of the Year Award, presented at the inaugural East Otago Community Sports Awards Dinner held in October. Noni was delighted to receive this award recognising that masters sports people were ranked as being of equal importance to those in open categories. Noni s achievements in 2014 included six new Otago throwing records, a South Island Shot Put record, and winning four national throws titles in the grade. Having concentrated on track events until reaching 60 years old, Noni feels she is still trying to master a number of basic throwing techniques and sees plenty of scope for improvement in all her specialist events. Noni is grateful for all the help and advice she has received from fellow athletes and officials who have made her transition into throwing events an enjoyable and rewarding experience. 20 Vetline - January 2015 Vetline - January

13 News Denise Phillips - Obituary (15 March October 2014) World Masters Track & Field Champs Lyon, France 4-16 August 2015 After a long battle with a rare blood cancer, and many hurdles cleared Denise sadly tripped at the final hurdle and lost the battle. She was one amazing lady with such courage and determination that underpinned her athletic career and her total life philosophy. Despite facing enormous odds with ground breaking bone marrow surgery she was still positive, and focused on future athletic goals, and her Murphy humour was there until the end. Denise first came to prominence in the athletics scene way back in 1976 when she took out the senior girls discus title when representing Opunake High School at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton. Such was the quality of her performance that she was selected to represent New Zealand Secondary schools in the team that competed against in As a result of this she was a worthy recipient of the TET Athletics Taranaki Masters Female Sportswoman of the year for Denise was generous with her time always giving more than taking, helping as club secretary for Egmont Athletics, and often officiating at local track and field events. Her forte was in the field as a throws specialist, but in earlier time she also ran in relays and completed triathlons. Many people who knew Denise were shocked to hear of her illness because she never complained nor mentioned her discomfort or pain. It was only when the local paper ran an article on her bid to raise awareness of the need for blood donors that people found out as she took part in shave for a cure with a group of friends. She wanted to speak up to help others, especially children diagnosed with blood cancers. Cost: A$138/NZ$150 So it was no surprise that after many years raising a family and training as a teacher, Denise performed with success when she rekindled her love of athletics at the masters level. In 2000 she took out the gold for javelin and silver in the discus at the New Zealand Masters Track and field championships. She also put on her running shoes that year and completed the Taranaki Daily News half marathon. She followed that up with a very successful Masters Championship in 2001 taking gold in the shot, javelin, hammer and weight pentathlon. This prompted her to enter the World Masters Championships at Brisbane later in the year, where her performances, though very credible could not match the European and American athletes. In typical Denise style, she trained even harder and followed that effort with gold in javelin and discus at the Oceania championships at Geelong in 2002, together with silver in shot, hammer and weight pentathlon, with all her performances being new Taranaki open records. It was in 2006, after lacking the energy she was accustomed to and just not performing as well as she knew that she could that Denise was diagnosed with a blood and bone marrow disorder. With medication and determination she went on to complete the 2010 London marathon and the Taupo half ironman and she returned to the New Zealand Masters Athletics Championships in 2011 as a to take six gold and one silver medal. She followed that up in 2012 at the Oceania championships in Tauranga with gold for javelin, silver for discus and bronze for shot and weight pentathlon. As recently as February 2014 she cycled the Otago rail trail in defiance of her illness. Her funeral was a fitting celebration of the life of a remarkable and truly courageous person. 14 Article Lavinia Petrie IAAF Female Masters Athlete of the Year by Wilma Perkins OMA nominee Lavinia Petrie received her award at the IAAF Gala Dinner in Monaco on 21 November It was a very successful occasion for Oceania women as New Zealand s Valerie Adams received the World Female Athlete of the Year award at Gala Dinner. Lavinia s two daughters were in attendance along with Stan and Wilma Perkins from WMA. Lavinia has been competing in athletics since 1966 and is one of the original members of master s athletics in. She has a long history of setting records from 1,500m to 100 kilometres and currently holds a total of eight World Records or World Best Performances. In January this year Lavinia set world records for the 3,000m and the 10,000m on the same day and two months later improved her 10,000m time by another seconds with a run of 44:43:27. On 17 November 2014, just four days before the awards dinner in Melbourne, she took another 15 seconds off her own 3000m world record. Lavinia set a world best time for the half marathon in January 2014 at the Oceania Regional Championships in Bendigo and as with the 10,000m she has broken the 5,000m world record twice in the past year, now currently held at 21: She has been a regular competitor at Oceania Masters Regional Championships and has competed very successfully in WMA Championships. Lavinia is someone who gives back to the sport. She is a qualified official who regularly officiates at competitions during the summer months. Lavinia has a coaching certificate and is respected for the good advice that she gives to athletes from her wealth of experience. At the n Masters Athletics Championships held earlier this year she was the team manager for her state team from Victoria. Congratulations Lavinia. It should be noted that the original three venues will continue to be used, however a fourth stadium (Stade Balmont - Lyon la Duchere) has been added and the Technical Information Centre (TIC) has been relocated from Parc de Parilly venue to Halle Stephane Diagana, the newly News constructed Indoor Stadium that adjoins the Stade Balmont. The map below details the venues locations and distances apart. All venues will be served by transport, primarily the Metro Rail System and supplemented by shuttle transport. Further information on the transport will be released soon and it is recommended that regular visits are made to the championships website ( com ) to be sure of the latest details. It is anticipated that Parc de Parilly will continue to host at least fifty percent of the competitions. 15 News News Manawatu/Wanganui by Jen Fee Our region has been remiss in sending in reports for some time but we hope to remedy this for the future. Our season this year was slow in kicking off due to Spring storms, and after three attempts we finally had to merge the weight challenge with a Spring pentathlon that should have been our 3rd event of the season! We always welcome Wellington neighbours to our events and also any Taranaki athletes willing to travel down. Often visitors outnumber the club members! I must thank Paul Godbaz for assisting with officiating at these as well as Jim Blair (Wgtn) who is always keeping us on track! Our low key events are usually full of laughter and friendly banter and finish off with a casual lunch and breakdown of the day s results, hopefully sending people away happy and better prepared for their next competition. We try to get three events in prior to North Islands and another three prior to Nationals. While struggling like many regions to keep member numbers stable we do have a group of regulars that continue to compete in their respective events. President Rob Dabb is usually busy with Feilding Moa Harriers, and also coaches future Masters in middle and long distances. He is always keen to broaden his skills and give the throwing and jumping events a go in our events! Congratulations to Moa and MWMA member Juanita Paterson who has been very successful this season winning the women s event in the recent Feilding Marathon and two weeks later the Ashhurst to Palmerston North run. Sue Hoskin is never far away from the medals in any walking event she enters and we usually see big results from Bo Cox and Jill Evans in the throwing events, however both have been conspicuously absent from competition this season so far and we look forward to their return. We welcome new members Brian Clatworthy of Dannevirke and Damien Wood from Wanganui to our small centre. 16 News News Taranaki by Vicky Jones Taranaki may not have submitted a report to Vetline for the last 6 months but that doesn t mean we ve been idle. Quite the opposite! Our winter programme is packed with events hosted by many of the region s clubs, including mainstays such as the Hughes Memorial cross country race held in Hawera. This year was notable in marking Alan Jones s 50th anniversary of his first appearance at this event (well-established even then). He had a well-fought tussle with Feilding s Roger Woodruff, emerging victorious in the grade. Stratford s Tom Verney Memorial cross country race on 14 June was also well supported and the Masters athletes provided their fair share of well-contested competition. Most notable at this year s event was the weather compared to the previous year a beautiful balmy winter s day compared to icy winds and sleet experienced by the seniors and master men. Harry Kerr Relay, 12/07/14 Mt Smart Stadium Auckland Still with walking, this year Egmont Athletics put together a team of walkers for this 5x10,000m walk relay, hosted by the Auckland Race Walking club. The team was almost entirely made up of Masters Association members, consisting of Mike Morresey (), Katie Morresey- Tahere (6), Des Phillips (), John Payne () and Vicky Jones () (in the masters ranks at the time but only just becoming a member for the new season). This year a small but eager contingent travelled to Hastings for the first major meet of the summer season though the weather would beg to differ that summer has arrived! Strong, cold gusts down the home straight made for challenging conditions with no let up the entire meeting but everyone was in the same boat. Des Phillips never fails to impress with the workload he undertakes at these events - competing in the 400m, 800m, 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 2000m steeplechase and high jump. Vicky Jones made her first foray into Masters athletics with two solid efforts in the 3000m track walk and 10km road walk. Alan Jones had strong efforts in his three chosen events the 400m 800m and 1500m. Lynne Mackay had personally pleasing results in all her pentathlon disciplines. This year saw the introduction of a new cross-country race held from Frankley School in New Plymouth. The Peter Cattley Memorial, honouring local athletics supporter and chiropractor Peter Cattley. This event is an estimated time race (no watches allowed!), with those going 4% over their estimated time being disqualified. It is a testament to how well Sue Park is walking in the grade that she fell foul of this rule! TET Athletics Taranaki Sports Awards, 26/06/14 This annual event took place at the Plymouth Hotel, New Plymouth with guest speaker Dick Tayler. It was great to see that both recipients of the Masters category were registered with NZ Master Athletics. Congratulations to Vicky Adams and Des Phillips on winning their respective categories. Mike Morresey won the senior men title which is a great achievement for a master athlete. Well done to Karen Gillum-Green who won Coach of the Year. Race walking is very strong in Taranaki, and as well as having a division at cross country and road events and champs, there are also such dedicated events such as the Taranaki Open Walks, this year held on 8 June. 17 News News Northland by Graham Hardy Waikato/Bay of Plenty by Ray Laurie Northland Masters Athletics has had a forgettable Winter and Spring period. After an encouraging start to our off season programme in May and June, things went downhill from there. Clearly the continuing poor weather played no little part in this, causing cancellations and programme amendments. The Pentathlon Series conducted over August, September and October was especially affected, although a lack of support from NMA members was also apparent. If this off season activity is to be continued next year, it must be in a significantly shortened form and efforts made so as to not lose money (again!). The Puffing Billy rail trail walk/run timetabled for September was another proposal that failed due to lack of club support, despite the bus hire (from Whangarei) and rail ticket costs not being unreasonable for this kind of event. The Northland Masters Pentathlon/Weights Pentathlon Championship planned for 2 November was postponed and is now due to be run in conjunction with our Track & Field Championships on 6 February 2015 (Waitangi Day). Our Club Treasurer, Diane Barrett, resigned recently, intending to move out of Whangarei. Diane has been a tower of strength over the years and we are very sorry to see her go. We wish her all the very best for the future. Committee member Margaret Crook has taken over the Treasurer s responsibilities. PHOTOS: Sharon Wray The summer season for throwers began a little earlier this year thanks to Rene Otto and the Edgecumbe College Athletics Academy as the use of the Tauranga Domain by athletes could not start until the end of the rugby season. On 21 September, Rene, who has introduced throwing the hammer to pupils of Edgecumbe College, arranged the Whakatane Challenge Throws Pentathlon to use the Academy s facilities and athletes from many areas including Waikato/BOP attended. This year, in addition to the masters, he included students from the Academy. Although it could be a long wait for these students to join the masters, they showed the benefits of youth with some outstanding performances, including a hammer throw, and a heavy weight distance of which would have earned 1400 points. The Waikato/BOP participation in the Oceania Throws Pentathlon did not take place until 12 October, but the turnout of 14 for this event represented 17% of the total number of competitors. Outstanding performers were Bev Savage who, as the first place-getter in the -69, had the best distances for all but the javelin. New member, Johan Van Zyl () also won his group while Veronica Romagndi-Pfenniger (W45), Bruce Solomon () and Bruce Clarke (), gained 2nd place in their divisions. The performance of Veronica in what was her first competition as a master was most impressive. She won the javelin and the weight in her division and in the case of the weight throw (as with the hammer), Veronica has not yet learnt to turn. Bruce Solomon, better known for his sprinting, also impressed, as he is also a relative newcomer to the throws pentathlon. However, from his distances in the shot, discus and javelin, he has obviously competed in these before. The number of entries for Tauranga was reduced slightly because of a clash with the Pan Pacific Masters Games. This multisport event which is very popular with New Zealand participants, had four from WBP attending and all came home with many of the elaborate and rather weighty medals. Our most successful competitor was Karyn McCready who won gold medals in the 1500m, 5000m and the 4k cross country, and a bronze in the 800m in spite of the fairly large fields. Sheryl Gower also performed well with silver medals in the 60, 100, 200 and 400 metre events. For the throwers, Pauline Purser, although with 6 gold medals, was disappointed to be the only competitor in her age group. However her ability to be still competing at 92 did not go unnoticed, as her photo was published in the Gold Coast Bulletin and her hammer throw shown on the Channel 7 news. In my case, with the exception of a win for the hammer, my other 5 medals indicated only the number in my competition. The results of the Tauranga meeting on 9 November, particularly when factoring for age, showed many of the track competitors are already able to offer stiff competition at the North island Championships. Names to look for in the women s events are Julie Lile and Angela Graham in the sprints; Joan Mayall and Robyn Winter in the longer events. For the men, include sprinters Bruce Solomon, Alan Sylvester and Shane Baker; and in the longer distances, Gordon Adams, Murray Clarkson and Barry Watson. 18 News News Auckland by Alan Dougall As athletes, the weather can have a significant effect on our psyche and on our performances. Auckland, like other parts of the country, has been subjected to good doses of unfavourable conditions. However, we were blessed to receive reasonable sunny conditions on the day of our two main early season competition days. Gideon Tait (GT) Trophy Meeting- 19 October This meeting, for those who participate for the trophy, is about competing in one track event, one field event, one jump event, and a fourth event of the athletes choosing. Forty athletes lined up to compete for the trophy, which again this year was won by Anne Deleiros with the highest average of 80.65% over the four events. There was some confusion and amusement surrounding the 60m event. You would think as experienced Masters athletes and starting officials, we would know where the 60m start line was marked on the Mt Smart track. But no!!... By oversight, the 70m start line was used. Anne s 70m result was adjusted accordingly to reflect 60m. Top Team One (TT1) - 9 November This was the first of three meetings to be held where club team points accumulate over the three meetings. 37 entries were received. Again this year, North Harbour Bays have taken a commanding lead for the Top Team Trophy with 165 points followed by AMA with 86 points, reflecting their strength of numbers and individual performances. 19 News News Wellington by Michael Wray The harrier season concluded in Wellington during October. We wrapped up with two races of note. The first was the Wellington Marathon Championships. As usual in an even-numbered year, these were held in Masterton as part of the Wairarapa Marathon. Unfortunately, the quality of the field is greatly reduced in an even-numbered year, with most runners preferring to save themselves for the much bigger Auckland event for their spring marathon. One runner who was doing his bit to contribute to the quality of the field was Wellington master Grant McLean. Grant galloped to win outright in 2:44, completing a winter season where he won the masters race for all Athletics Wellington championship events. The only AW race he failed to win was the Dorne Cup, where a visiting athlete from Manawatu took first place. Back to the Wellington Marathon Champs, Graeme Tindall placed as second Wellington master, with no third male and no females registered as Wellington runners in the master s grades. The Wellington Masters 10km Championships were held in Lower Hutt. The course for this race is proving to be ever more challenging to maintain. New race director Sharon Wray did a fantastic job liaising with the council and arranging a large team of volunteer race marshals. Increased traffic, particularly around the start/finish area now there are new weekend tenants using the adjacent school buildings on Sunday mornings, mean we are looking at possibilities to relocate to a quieter venue for next year. Non-member Andrew Wharton, in his debut appearance at a WMA event, ran our fastest time since 2008 to finish first. In the women, Michelle Van Looy secured her fourth win in five years. Terri Grimmett has been similarly dominant in the walkers, winning the women s walk for the fourth time in six years, while Ian Morton was the first male walker. On age-grading, Jackie Wilson was the top walker with 84.10% and Pam Graham the top runner with 90.27%. PHOTOS: Sharon Wray Our track season started with an interesting innovation. The walking community arranged for Quentin Rew to give a talk on race walking, with a call-out to interested runners to come along and give it a go. It was amazing to hear that in training Quentin completes his 500m intervals at 3:50/km pace. Walking at 3:50/km! Quentin and Alana Barber conducted some training drills and tuition before a 3000m track walk was conducted. The two master s runners who participated were both put soundly in their place, finishing last and while they were allowed to finish they would have been disqualified in an official race. Some of the younger runners proved more adept at cross-skilling, with one or two showing real promise, although the established walking community came under no threat at the head of the race. The incredibly fast walking speed displayed by Quentin and Alana was an impressive sight. The Regional League meet in Wellington doubled up the 5000m race as the Wellington Championships. The weather in Wellington provided one of its more challenging days for running, serving up strong winds that swirled around the park during the course of the day, slowing performances from their usual standards. Only one master s women contested the event, Michelle Van Looy finishing in 20:26. The men s race had more competition. Grant McLean continued his winning ways by finishing first in the masters in 16:30. Second master was Michael Wray in 17:07, with Tony Price third in 17:51. Coaching and coach education is part of my job and helping coaches to improve is one of my briefs. I was asked to compile a list of tips to improve coaching, here they are. Coaching is about developing people, so coach people, not a sport Everything in a coaching session should have a purpose no time fillers Know your athletes, what their goals are and what motivates them Plan each session; only very experienced coaches can get away with making it up on the day Don t try to cover too much in a session; repetition is the key to learning but use lots of variations Have a coaching outline for the whole season, training days and competitions so there are no surprises Be punctual and don t let your athletes be late for sessions Be well organised; don t spend half the session getting things going Don t talk too much. 20 News Tasman by Derek Shaw Otago by John Stinson News NZ Road Relay Champs 4 October 2014 Tasman Master s members were again involved in the Athletics Nelson masters men and open grade teams that lined up on the start lines of the familiar Sign of the Takahe to Akaroa relay course. The and O+ teams were hoping to make it three wins in a row while the O team was hoping to make a return to the top of the podium following the recruitment of Robbie Barnes and the return to Nelson of former Triathlon NZ coach Greg Fraine. The O team of Herman van Gessel, Derek Shaw, Mike Morrissey, Barry Dewar, Ian Carter and Ian Morrison was the same as for 2013 with the first and last lap runners swopped over. With several runners recovering from recent injuries the strategy was to try and establish an early buffer so that the later runners would not be under too much pressure and at risk of their injuries reoccurring. By the end of the second of the 6 laps the team had a lead of over three and half minutes which dropped to just under 3 minutes after the third lap, following Gavin Smith s fastest lap run for second placed Athletics Tauranga the only one not taken out by Nelson runners. The lead was steadily stretched out over the last three laps for a total time of 2:46:42, a winning margin of over eight and half minutes which was more than twice that from the previous year. Last lap runner Ian Morrison had the distinction of crossing the finish line to make it his second three-peat in gold medals at NZ Road Relay Championships after having been a member of Tasman Tigers teams that won three successive titles in the O grade. It was also Derek Shaw and Mike Morrissey s 6th gold medal in road relay championships, having also been in winning Tasman Tigers teams in the O grade. On the 8 lap course the O team got off to a flying start with Neil Whittaker giving the team a 20s lead. Robbie Barnes who had been sick in the lead up to the event was not able to hold out Auckland City s Ken Walker on the second lap. However, a strong run from Ian Courtenay put Nelson a few metres behind Auckland City by the end of the 3rd lap and Bill Revell regained the lead on the fourth lap to finish the lap with a 46s margin over Wellington Harriers. The next three Nelson runners, Cliff Bowman, Patrick Meffan and Tim Cross, extended the lead to 2 minutes 37 seconds by the end of the penultimate lap. Greg Fraine completed a fine team effort crossing the finish line on the Akaroa Domain in 4:57:21, 2:17 ahead of pre-race favourites Wellington Harriers. Their winning time was comfortably under the 5 hours exactly recorded by the gold medal winning Tasman Tigers team on the same course at the 2009 championships. The team, in the absence of top runner Phil Costley and with some runners recovering from recent injuries, had a challenge to extend their winning streak. John Kennedy gave them a strong start finishing alongside Papanui Toc H s Jason Baillie, 7s behind Wellington Scottish s Michael Wray. Strong runs by Brian Kemp, Ian Thomas, Kazu Abe and Simon Mardon kept Nelson in the top three. However, despite Simon Leaning, Peter Versey and Graeme Taylor taking out fastest laps on the last 3 laps, the gap to Hamilton Hawks and Papanui Toc H (which included Simon Mardon s brother Chris) was unable to be bridged and they finished with the bronze medals 1:32 behind Hawks. Athletics Nelson had their best ever club performance at the relay champs, with four of their five teams winning medals as their JW were also third. This gave them one more medal than the four clubs from much larger centres who won three medals each Auckland City Athletics, Hamilton Hawks, Wellington Harriers and Wellington Scottish. However, due to recent changes in the points scoring system which weighted the points in favour of senior, junior and young masters, the club was not able to repeat their 2013 champion club title. With each club s top three teams counting towards the club title, Athletics Nelson had 46 points, equal with Hamilton Hawks, but behind the 50 points obtained by Auckland City, Wellington Harriers and Scottish. A count back process determined that Scottish won the best overall club title which they last won in 2012, when they narrowly beat Nelson by one point under the previous points system. Under the old scoring system Nelson would this year have been first equal with Auckland City. Nelson Sports Awards Paula Canning, who was third in the age group at the World Masters Mountain Running Champs in September and won her age group at the NZ Mountain champs, was nominated in the Masters category along with Phil Costley and the Athletics Nelson O+ team - for their third successive win in the NZ Road Relay champs. Costley was 2nd senior in the NZ Mountain Champs and 2nd in the NZ Marathon champs and 1st kiwi runner. At the awards dinner on 28 November the winner was Phil Costley. Congratulations Phil. NI Track and Field Champs Steve Low was the only Tasman Master who managed to make it to either the NI or SI champs. Like everybody else he found the windy conditions in Hastings challenging. He had a good win in the 400m in 1:03.97 but had to settle for third in the 200m (29.55). The 2014 South Island Masters Track and Field Championships hosted by the Otago Masters Association over the weekend of November turned out to be a very happy and successful three days of competition. Weather over the three days proved variable the Friday evening competitors having to contend with bitterly cold wind coupled with squally showers however conditions on the Saturday proved much better than forecast and improved further throughout the day. Entries totalled 68 a slight increase on 2013 and it was pleasing to have a small number of overseas athletes included among the final numbers. The Saturday competition was held in conjunction with the Athletics Otago Children s Interclub Meeting in the morning and the Senior Track and Field Meeting in the afternoon. The timetable worked extremely well and was commented on favourably at the AGM chaired by NZMA President Mike Weddell held during the lunch interval on Saturday. The feeling was conveyed that future South Island Championships should look to combine with other scheduled events due to the small number of available venues and to attract greater interest and support. Although the hosting of the championships was definitely a team effort no praise can be too high for Championship Coordinator Fiona Harvey who oversaw Lyn Tribble competing in the Shot Put the whole operation in such a calm and efficient manner. Fiona s meticulous attention to detail was the catalyst for a smooth trouble free event which all OMA organises and members can be satisfied with. As well as her huge administrative input, Fiona still found time to excel herself in competition winning the 3kg Shot Put (8.14m),500g Javelin (22.87m), 7.26kg weight throw (10.06m) and 3kg Hammer Throw (27.48m). Team Mate Winifred Harding was equally dominant in the winning the 7.26kg Weight Throw (10.06m),1kg Discus (18.64m), and 3kg Shot Put (7.87m). The Saturday Evening BBQ held in the Upstairs Function Room at the Caledonian Ground provided a further enjoyable element to the championships weekend with many positive comments received as to the quality of the food provided. Thanks to Raylene and Craig Bates for their work in organising the catering and presentation for us. The unscheduled arrival of the local Fire Brigade due to a malfunctioning smoke alarm did nothing to spoil the relaxed and convivial atmosphere prevailing among all competitors and officials. The full marathon closed with 1,800 entries, the half marathon around 2,500 entries and the 10km event also closed with many entries. It would have to be one of the most scenic running events anywhere in the world. It is in an alpine setting with mountains all around and two glacial lakes to run beside. The marathon starts at the Millbrook village, passes through Arrowtown, onto a track alongside the Arrow River, some good gravel backroads, a loop around Lake Hayes, on to Frankton, alongside Lake Wakatipu to the Queenstown Gardens, then to the finish line. One appealing aspect is that there is only about 30% on tarseal roads, the remainder is on good gravel roads and well maintained mountain bike trails. There were loads of cheering spectators along most of the course. Caught out by a sudden weather change The weather conditions on the day caught many runners out. The weather was cool but still reasonably good for the 10km runners, and the half marathon runners, who started first. They managed to finish before the weather turned really bad. However, although the marathon runners had good marathon running conditions for the first half, the weather conditions deteriorated quite suddenly early in the second half of the race. The wind speed increased markedly, the temperature dropped quickly, and the chilling rain poured. The last 12 to 15km was all head wind to add to the wind chill factor. These sudden changes in weather conditions caught many marathon runners out including myself. I had a polyprop and sealed jacket at the ready at the start line, but because the shower of rain had passed and there was a nice balmy temperature I opted not to wear them fearing that I would get too hot if I did. That was an error of judgment as it turned out. Running conditions were great for the first 25kms and then turned really cold, and by 33kms I was becoming quite hypothermic and pulled out of the race at Frankton. A volunteer at Frankton, Don Wallace, rescued me and gave me a ride to the finish line, for which I thanked him at the time and again a day or two later. I m glad that I did pull out as my son Glenn who managed to finish the marathon, said that the weather was even worse from Frankton to Queenstown, with chilly headwinds and rain. I wondered if I was the only person to get caught out by the sudden weather change. This question was answered at the finish line. The St John s Ambulance staff, who did a marvellous job under trying conditions, were run off their feet with marathon runners who were in a bad hypothermic state. Their tent had around 10 shivering runners on stretchers with woollen and/ or survival blankets over them. When the St John s staff took me to a warmer room, I found that there were another runners also in various stages of hypothermia. So it was not just me that was caught out by the sudden weather change. As a result of the bad weather conditions, the prize giving, which was to have been at 3.00 p.m., was called off and those that won prizes were advised to pick them up the following day. I m sure the organisers were very disappointed that the weather let them down on the day. We were sunning ourselves the day before and the day after. Murphy s Law again and a lesson for us all to learn! Be there next year Despite what happened in terms of the weather, the event itself is marvelous, very scenic, and very well run by the organisers. I would recommend it to anyone, and suggest that you get your entries in early next year as all the events will fill up fast.
