1 REPORT ON THE CROSS COUNTRY COMPETITION HELD AT UNIVERSITY OF INTRODUCTION CAPE COAST FROM 6 TH 9 TH NOVEMBER, 2014 The Inter-University Cross Country Competition is an annual programme organized by GUSA for all public Universities in Ghana. The closing ceremony of the 18 th Inter University Cross Country in November, 2013 at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) unveiled University of Cape Coast (UCC) as the next host of the competition. Preparation started in earnest but along the line, there was a change of plan after GUSA participated in the FASU and FISU Cross Country Competition in Uganda where the competition was ran in a loop as specified by I.A.A.F. rules. University of Cape Coast considered that to bring out the real beauty of the competition. PARTICIPANTS The three day festival was participated in by five member institutions namely the University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Education (UEW), University of Professional Studies (UPSA), and the host University of Cape Coast (UCC). About 150 participants were involved in the 19 th Inter University Cross Country. They included Students, Coaches and Officials from the Universities, Ghana Education Service (GES), Drivers, Security men and women, and first Aiders. All participating institutions except UG and KNUST arrived on 6 th November, UG arrived a day earlier to familiarize themselves with the route for the competition. KNUST arrived on 7 th November, Vice-Chancellor s Reception The Vice- Chancellor of University of Cape Coast treated officials, coaches and student leaders to a welcome reception at his lodge on Friday, 7 th November, 2014 at 6.00 p.m. Accommodation The student athletes from the various institutions were housed at two accommodation venues which were approved by an inspection team of GUSA. All female athletes were housed at the GNAT hostel while the males were also put at AYENAP hotel. A list of hotels with their corresponding rates was sent to the GUSA secretary to disseminate to all coaches. The purpose was to enable coaches to book hotels of their choice. University of Ghana refused to check-in their male athletes into the designated hotel. Feeding Two caterers were contracted to feed all athletes during the competition. The caterers alternated the feeding process beautifully and served assorted traditional meals. Competition For the first time in the history of GUSA, the Cross Country Competition was run in an international standard loop which was mapped and constructed by U.C.C. The total distance for the loop was 2km as specified by IAAF. The Men and Women run the following distances during the competition: 8 km for women (4 laps) 12km for men (6 laps)

2 At the end of the competition, UG lifted both the men and women s trophies (See appendix for detailed results for all institutions). The following personalities were in attendance as special guest of honour to grace the occasion. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast- Prof. D.D. Kuupole, the Registrar Mr Kofi Nyan, the Dean of Students- Dr Edjah, the GUSA President-Dr J.K.Ogah and the Assistant Registrar for Institute of Development Studies-Mrs. Betty Addo Nkrumah. The Vice Chancellor also performed the role of a starter for the men s race and Mrs. Betty Addo Nkrumah as the starter for the women s race. Prizes Cash prize were given to the first ten athletes for both men and women (see appendix for the list of athletes with their corresponding positions). Dinner A dinner was organized at the GNAT conference hall for all athletes and coaches in the evening after the competition. All students and coaches queued in an orderly manner to take their food which was served in a buffet form. Departure All institutions departed from Cape Coast to their various destinations on Sunday 9 th November, 2014 after breakfast. Challenges 1. UG S refusal to sleep at the designated accommodation created a problem between the host and the hotelier. 2. The same issue created a problem for some institutions whose students also tried to follow suit. Observations 1. The loop is a conducive arena for cross country (safe for both athletes/spectators). 2. The use of ribbons could have been adopted by GUSA to serve as a double check for number of laps. 3. Participation of the University community and students was encouraging Recommendation 1. GUSA must probe into UG s refusal to sleep at the approved student s accommodation. 2. GUSA must encourage member institutions that have the land to create a loop for our subsequent cross country competitions. 3. GUSA must adopt the use of ribbons to double check the number of laps made by the athletes. 4. Athletes must be educated before the start of every race.
