The Gamecocks last played host to the SEC Outdoor Championships during the 2001 season for their one and only time serving as the championship host before this weekend. Thursday s action at the SEC Outdoor Championships features the men s decathlon and women s heptathlon as the meet opens at 9:15 a.m. CT while the multi-events continue Friday at 10 a.m. Friday will also feature the first preliminary races on the track at 5 p.m. Friday s field events are slated for a 1:30 p.m. start followed by the day s first prelim races on the track at 5:30 p.m. The championship concludes Saturday at 10 a.m. in the field events and 2:15 p.m. on the track. The Lady Tigers have claimed the women s SEC Outdoor team championship a total fo five times under head coach Dennis Shaver, including wins in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and The Tigers have earned a top finish of second place on the men s side four times under Shaver s guidance, including 2007, 2008, 2010 and Arkansas enters the weekend as the defending SEC Outdoor Champion on both sides as the Razorback women scored points and the Razorback men totaled 121 points in three days of competition at Alabama s Sam Bailey Track last spring. The Tigers brought home a fourth-place team finish on the men s side iwth 86 points scored in the meet, while the Lady Tigers earned a fifth-place finish on the women s side with 75 points during the 2016 championship. STORYLINES LSU has captured 35 team titles alltime at the SEC Outdoor meet in the program s history, including 22 wins by the Tigers and 13 wins by the Lady Tigers in the competition. The Lady Tigers are the most successful program in the history of the SEC Outdoor Championships as their 13 titles all-time in seven more than the six titles won by the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Lady Tigers have been crowned SEC Outdoor Champions five times under head coach Dennis Shaver in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and BREAKDOWN LSU Men Ranking No. 6 (USTFCCCA Top 25) Last Meet at the SEC Relays (April 28-29) SEC Outdoor 22 (1933, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41) Championships 42, 43, 46, 47, 48, 51, 57, 58, 59, 60, 63, 88, 89, 90) LSU has also enjoyed tremendous individual success at the SEC Outdoor Championships over the years while winning at least one event title in 34 of the last 35 seasons since Athletes won at least one event title in 32-straight years from before seeing that streak snapped in LSU s six event championships at last year s SEC Outdoor meet was second only to the seven titles won between the men and women of Arkansas as the Tigers totaled five wins and the Lady Tigers added one at the University of Alabama. 31 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 51 SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS 147 NCAA CHAMPION ATHLETES 1,344 ALL-AMERICAN SELECTIONS Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake proved to be the story of the 2016 SEC Outdoor Championships for the LSU program as he became the first triple gold medalist for the Tigers since three-time Olympic medalist Richard Thompson in Mitchell-Blake swept SEC sprint titles in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes while also anchoring the Tigers to a meet record of in the 4x100-meter relay. His winning PR of in the 200-meter final was the fastest time by a collegian during the 2016 season. He was awarded the SEC Commissioners Trophy for his effort. Mitchell-Blake swept sprint titles in the 100 meters (10.16) and 200 meters (19.95) after anchoring the Tigers to victory in the 4x100-meter relay as he joined Jaron Flournoy, Renard Howell and Tremayne Acy in setting an SEC meet record of Mitchell-Blake became the first LSU Tiger to win three events at the SEC Outdoor Championships since former NCAA Champion and three-time Olympic medalist Richard Thompson did so at Auburn in Like Thompson, Mitchell-Blake used that performance as a springboard onto the international stage as he later lined up for Great Britain at the Olympic Games for the first time in his career while advancing to the 200-meter semifinals at the Rio Olympics. Mitchell-Blake s (+0.4) in the SEC final was just off John Regis British record of in the event. Hobbs Reaches New Heights in Junior Season The 2015 season seems a lifetime ago for LSU s Aleia Hobbs when she announced herself as one of the up-and-coming sprint stars in collegiate track and field with a fifth-place NCAA finish in her first ever 100-meter final at the NCAA Championships. An injury-plagued 2016 season followed as she could never reach those heights of her rookie campaign. Fast forward to 2017 and those struggles from a year ago are well in the past as Hobbs is once again among the NCAA s elite sprinters as she arrives in South Carolina for the SEC Championships this weekend. Hobbs will line up at Weems Baskin Track as the NCAA leader in the 100 meters this outdoor season following her effort at the SEC Relays two weeks ago. That s where she sprinted to the second-fastest time in collegiate history with a windlegal PR of (+2.0) to eclipse Oregon s Deajah Stevens (11.00) for the NCAA lead in the event. Hobb s is the fastest time ever run at low altitude in NCAA history as only the recognized collegiate record of by LSU s own Dawn Sowell at the 1989 NCAA Championships at BYU separates Hobbs from the top of the NCAA s alltime rankings. Sowell is also the collegiate-record holder in the 200 meters with her best of from With her performance at the SEC Relays, Hobbs was named the SEC Women s Runner of the Week for the fourthstraight week on May 2 as she also received the award on April 11, April 18 and April 25. Collegiate Record Relays There appears to be a showdown looming in the women s 4x100-meter relay at this year s NCAA Championships as all eyes will be on LSU and Oregon as they hope to line up against one another on Saturday, June 10, at 5:32 p.m. CT. These are the two fastest relay teams in the history of NCAA track and field while matching one another with collegiate records of seconds to this point of the 2017 season. Round 1 went to the Ducks as Oregon (42.12) edged LSU (42.14) at the finish line at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 15 in the fastest relay race in collegiate history. Oregon broke their own collegiate record in the event as they set the previous mark of at the Florida Relays just two weeks before in the early stages of the 2017 outdoor season. The Lady Tigers responded at the SEC Relays two weeks ago as they matched the Ducks with a collegiate-record-tying run of as junior Mikiah Brisco, sophomore Kortnei Johnson, senior Jada Martin and junior Aleia Hobbs eclipsed their own school record from the Mt. SAC Relays. Texas A&M was nowhere close in second place at the SEC Relays as the Aggies had the second-fastest time of the meet at LSU s women are not only the defending NCAA Champions in the 4x100-meter relay this season, but they are also the reigning SEC Outdoor Champions in the event after winning last year s title at Alabama with a time of in the final. LSU s SEC Championship Contenders LSU arrives in South Carolina with a host of SEC-title contenders and All-SEC hopefuls on both the men s and women s sides with five SEC event leaders and 11 athletes and relay teams ranking among the league s current Top 3 in their respective events heading into the weekend. Not only does Aleia Hobbs and the Lady Tigers 4x100-meter relay team top the SEC and NCAA rankings with their performance in 2017, but the Tigers also own the SEC-leading and NCAA-leading 4x100-meter relay on the men s side with a seasonal-best time of Running the NCAA s fastest sprint relay on the men s side this season are Donte Jackson, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, Tremayne Acy and Jaron Flournoy. Senior Rebekah Wales, the 2015 SEC Champion in the women s javelin, leads the SEC and NCAA in the event this year with a best of 188 feet, 0 inches, while junior Kymber Payne is also the SEC s fastest 400-meter hurdler with a best of in While Mitchell-Blake is the defending SEC Outdoor Champion in the men s 200-meter dash, he ranks No. 2 in the conference this season with a season-opening time of in his only appearance in the event this season at the LSU Alumni Gold on April 22.
