4 Overview Welcome Our all-volunteer team would like to welcome all racers to the 4th annual Castle Peak 100k endurance run held in Truckee, California. Please read through the entire guide prior to race day. This will answer various questions on logistics, course conditions, rules and other great ways to spend your time while in Truckee. Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. The more you know the better prepared you ll be. Organization Castle Peak 100k is produced by the Donner Party Mountain Runners, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and permitted by USFS, California State Parks, Truckee Donner Land Trust, Tahoe Donner Association, Sugar Bowl Resort & Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Area History The Truckee region s long history of travel and perseverance through challenging terrain and harsh conditions only seemed a suitable location for what has been going graduate level ultra running. Peter Fain, Co-Race Director and course designer, spent years working, putting together some of the best trails that the area has to offer while including points of historic significance and at the same time keeping the course continuously flowing forward. Starting near the original camp site of the Donner family and finishing at Sugar Bowl are important components of the course. We run past the historic emigrant trail while running over Mt. Judah and we finish only a mile from one of the historic trail markers. With great land partners, the race will be here for years to come. CASTLE PEAK 100K RUNNERS GUIDE!4

9 Finish Line For the first time we will be finishing at Sugar Bowl s Mt. Judah Lodge. We have a huge patio space, with bathrooms, lighting, and plenty of seating. Food will be provided by the Sugar Bowl staff this year. Each runner will receive a voucher for a complimentary meal. Safety Medical We will have medical personnel to assist with minor injuries and running-related ailments. If serious medical attention is required we will contact the fire department for paramedic support. Volunteer medics will be present at: Johnson Canyon, Devils Oven, Castle Pass, Van Norden, The Palisades, and the Finish Line. Van Norden (Mile 50) and the Finish Line will have more extensive support. Seek medical attention at these locations if needed. Dropping from the Race (DNF-ing) If you drop from the race, you MUST notify the Aid Station Captain and be marked as leaving the course. Safe drop points from the course are: A4 / Johnson Canyon / Mile 24.6 A7/ Castle Valley / 37.5 A9 / Van Norden / Mile 50 If at all possible, we ask that you avoid dropping from the race at a remote Aid Station. Most remote Aid Stations will require you to hike out under your own power. It is very difficult and time consuming for race staff to retrieve you from a remote Aid Station and should be reserved for emergencies only. CASTLE PEAK 100K RUNNERS GUIDE!9

10 Getting Lost The course is marked at the minimum, every 1/2 mile with either a orange Castle Peak 100k logo d flag or an orange ribbon with black dots on a clothes pin. If you've gone in excess of one mile without seeing one, you should back track to the last marker you saw. Note: If colorblind, know what the marking ribbons look like so you don't confuse markers without some other markings that may exist in the woods. You may also ask the Race Team for a sample marking to carry with you for comparison. It is important to consider carrying a cell phone so we can track you down if you continue off course. Most of the course has cell service. CASTLE PEAK 100K RUNNERS GUIDE!10

Course Details Aptly described as graduate level ultra marathon, Castle Peak 100k doesn't hold back with its challenging terrain, elevation gain of over 15,000ft, or an altitude at an average of 7,300ft. Yet it was not designed to be a hard course, rather it was designed to be the most epic, scenic run with historical significance that Truckee, California, has to offer. It just turned out to be hard as a result. Start to The Animal Aid Station (8.6miles): New 2018 we start at Prosser Ranch Group Campground. The race begins with a 3/4 mile calm asphalt run through the park before making a right hand turn onto a dirt road that passes more camp sites. Enjoy the wide open start for another 3/4 of a mile before making a hard left onto the Commemorative Emigrant Trail. From here, you ll have just over a mile to the Historic Donner Picnic Site. (Where the Donner Family actually camped). Once you arrive here, you ll make a right, and cross Highway 89. Watch for cars, as they have the right of way. The Emigrant Trail continues up for another CASTLE PEAK 100K RUNNERS GUIDE!17

18 half mile before you make a right turn onto the Animal Trail. Very quickly, there is another hard left before you head up. A nice gradual 3 mile ascent, will bring you to the top of the first climb before you briefly descend and begin the second section of climbing to the summit of Prosser Hill. That next climb is about 1.5 miles before descending one mile to our first Aid Station, The Animal. There is a hard left off the trail to the Aid Station. Don't miss this, otherwise it will bring you back to the Start. The Animal to Euer Valley (6.2Miles): From the Aid Station you ll bomb downhill for a couple of miles. Note: there is a point where the road veers to the right and a less traveled road goes straight. You go straight. Continue all the way down until it flattens out. You ll come to a cross road where you will turn left. Stay on this road for about 1/2 a mile until you make a hard left onto a single track trail again. You ll eventually pop out on the same fire road you were previously on. Continue on the fire road, crossing Carpenter Valley Rd. (the main dirt road crossing) where you ll have an insulting 1 mile climb that is rutted and washed out. At the top of this climb you ll have a swift right and then a swift left onto a single track. Continue on this trail for about 1/2 mile where you ll cross a main dirt road. Euer Valley to Andromeda (6.2 miles): Enjoy the well maintained Tahoe Donner Trail System. When leaving Euer Valley Aid Station, you ll begin a gradual climb up Crab Tree Trail (double wide trail). The trail climbs for about 1.5 miles before linking onto the Mustang Sally single track trail that winds its way down to the Euer Valley Meadow. Once to the valley floor you ll cross the meadow and begin the long dusty climb up the Mother Lode Trail. 1/2 way up that climb you ll reach Andromeda Aid Station. Andromeda to Johnson Canyon (4.6 miles): From Andromeda Aid Station, you ll continue up the Mother Lode Trail until you reach Hawks Peak. A short descent will bring you to the Drifter ridge line. This is a fire road. Near the end of the ridge you ll head right onto a short section of single track that will lead you to the top of the Johnson Canyon descent. 2.5 miles downhill and you will arrive at the Johnson Canyon Aid Station. This is your first crew access point and drop bag location. CASTLE PEAK 100K RUNNERS GUIDE!18

19 Johnson Canyon to Summit Lake (3.7 miles): Start with a one mile dirt road climb before returning to the Donner Lake Rim Trail. Once on the trail, you ll have another 1 mile climb of single track before you return onto a lightly used dirt road heading towards Summit Lake. (1 mile) Once at Summit Lake, the trail will return to single track and you ll have about a 1/2 mile before you reach the Summit Lake Aid Station. Summit Lake to Devils Oven (5.3 miles): This is the crux of the course, and is the most scenic and challenging section. You ll begin with a 1.5 mile climb up to Frog Lake Overlook. Once there, you will have several short but steep descents and climbs over the next 2.5 miles before reaching the Devil s Oven/Warren Lake interchange. Here you turn left towards Devil s Oven. Do not go down to Warren Lake. From the interchange it s about 1.3 mile to the Devil s Oven Aid Station. Devil s Oven to Castle Valley (4 miles): From the Devil s Oven Aid Station, it is just over a 1/2 mile climb to the summit of Basin Peak. It can be pretty steep at points, but the hard part is the fatigue from the earlier climbs. The ridge from Basin to Castle Peak is epic ridge running. Enjoy it! At the far end, you ll have a short, steep climb up to the summit of Castle Peak. From the peak you will have a very steep downhill on loose, rocky terrain. Find your inner dexterity to navigate down with confidence. Once at the saddle, turn left and head down the fire road about 1 mile to the Castle Valley Aid Station. Castle Valley to Hole in the Ground (6.2 miles): Leaving the Castle Valley Aid Station, there is a 2 mile climb before beginning a long descent into the Hole in the Ground trail. This is a popular mountain bike trail, and they ll be out there. Please be aware and courteous of their presence. This section is quite soul sucking as it seems to go on and on and on and. just when you think it ll never end the very remote Hole in the Ground Aid Station appears. Hole in the Ground to Van Norden (6.3 miles): Mostly downhill with a water crossing, this section gets very hot and takes longer than you think. It is a time warp to be sure. There will be a long, 3/4 mile downhill dirt road with Private Property signs. Make sure you to turn left onto the single track as you bomb this downhill. Don't miss it! It happens all the time! You ll have one more dirt road climb before you reach the turn off to the trailhead in Soda Springs. Once you hit the trail head you have our one section of pavement. Stay on the left hand side of the road, CASTLE PEAK 100K RUNNERS GUIDE!19

20 all the way until you reach the signs that say Runners Crossing Road. There you will cross the road, and then the railroad tracks. You ll then find yourself at the Van Norden Aid Station. Note: If there is a train crossing, you find yourself stuck, you ll have to wait. DO NOT risk running across in front of the train. They're fast and much bigger than you. This will be your second crew and drop bag access point. You will also pick up your pacer/safety runner at this location. Van Norden to Overload to Crows Nest (6.2 miles): Wild flowers, more ridge lines and darkness begins for some runners. These well maintained trails by the Truckee Donner Land Trust provide 4 quality climbs, 2 ridge lines and wooded running. Pay attention to the course marking through this section as there are many intersecting trails. Doubling back if you get off course is imperative here. We e added an additional Aid Station here, Overload. Right, smack in the middle to break up this navigationally challenging section. Crows Nest to Mt. Lincoln (1.5 miles): Where fear and loathing for the course designer shines through. This short section of course is on what is best described as a goat trail. The course has over 100 flags, 50 ribbons, led lighting, several fixed ropes and several safety personnel throughout. Move methodically and safely through this section while thanking your volunteers. There are choke points, cliffs, and plenty of scree. Once at the top of Mt. Lincoln, you ll run past the ski lift, and head straight down the ski run to the Mt. Lincoln Aid Station. Mt Lincoln to the Finish (4 miles): From the Mt. Lincoln Aid Station, there are a few turns that keep you off the Pacific Crest Trail (running the PCT violates our permit), leading you past a historic site where the wagons of the 1800 s were pulled over the summit. You ll pass this point and commemorative sign, continuing over Mt. Judah. Relish in your final climb of the day! It s not long. The anticlimactic summit leads you into a gradual downhill that you can tackle with reckless abandon, as you should, since the race is nearly done. Continue down until you reach an intersection. At this intersection, make a sweeping left turn. Continue down and watch your footing as the trail is slightly washed out. Only a 1/4 mile down, and you will reach a point where you ll want to go straight but need to go left. I ll mark the hell out of it, but expect the left. Once you make this left turn the trail is slightly overgrown for a 1/4 of a mile until it turns into a fire road. Once on the fire road you have a small handful of switchbacks leading you to the Finish. Bring it in hard! Leave nothing on the trail. You are done! CASTLE PEAK 100K RUNNERS GUIDE!20
