1 December 2013 Club Athlete receives Elite Athletics Scholarship Karl Griffin has made remarkable progress since joining Tir Chonaill A.C. five years ago. From winning the Celtic U16 800m International in Wales in 2009, improving his 800m time from 2mins+ to 1min 49.63secs as a 17 year old in 2012 a National U18 Youth Record. Karl s list of achievements also includes numerous Irish club and school titles/records and International experience at International Schools/Glasgow 2nd 800m; European Youth Olympics in Turkey where he won bronze in the 800m in 2011 and World Junior/Barcelona 2012 and European Junior/ Reiti The recent exciting news that Karl was awarded an elite athletics and academic scholarship to UCD recognises his progress to date and is another step towards realising his potential. At UCD he joins a group of the country s top young athletes, including Letterkeny s Mark English and Ruairi Finnegan and Limerick s talented Sarah Lavin who many pundits reckon is set to fill the shoes of Derval O Rourke. Karl represented and benefited from the Abbey Vocational Schools academic and athletics programmes, scored a remarkable 565 points in his Leaving Cert and will study Science in UCD. The club would also like to congratulate Karl and the numerous members on recent successes in the Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations. 2 Well done Girls at National League Tir Chonaill AC Juvenile Awards At the Clubs Juvenile Awards night in Pier 1 Donegal Town, on Friday 22nd November Club, Chairman Paul O Gara highlighted the numerous competitive, organisational and administrative successes of Tirchonaill A.C during the last twelve months. The club through its many coaches and volunteers assisted and guided hundreds of athletes from eight years to retirement age via weekly schedules that saw members participate, enjoy and have much success in programmes as varied as Little Athletics, Special Olympics, Fit4Life, road from 5k to Marathon, track and field[indoor and Outdoor] and Cross country. A big thanks to all the coaches for their huge contribution of time and expertise and the numerous athletes on their outstanding achievements during the year. We are also indebted to the very generous sponsorship support we receive from the community. The clubs women s team qualified for the Premier League Final after a lapse of a few years and although a little under strength due to injury withdrawals, performed out of their skins in Tullamore. Congratulations and thanks to all, to team manager Jackie for all her work behind the scenes during the build up to and during the qualifying rounds and final, to Anne Marie McGlynn, Lifford and Karen Crossan, Innishowen - guests in qualifying rounds and final. Bridie Lynch Irish Paralympic Hall of Fame Inductee Paralympics Ireland made a number of presentations at the recent dinner of the EPC General Assembly and Conference in the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin Bridie first represented Ireland at the 1983 European Athletics Championships in Varna, Bulgaria where she won discus bronze at the age of 17. She went on to represent Ireland in four subsequent Paralympic Games (New York in 1984, Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000), winning gold in the Discus in Atlanta. Bridie competed for ten years on successful TirChonaill AC teams while being coached by Eamon Harvey. Congrats Bridie on a well deserved award. Training Times Tuesday pm: 13 years and up Tuesday pm. All have prepared with a purpose, under the coaching guidance of Paddy Donoghue, all have specific completion goals/times, many completed the 26miles plus distance for various charities. 4 Tír Chonaill Athletics Club, a Club for Everyone! Tír Chonaill Athletics Club is a club with an open door policy, where you will be greeted with a warm welcome from friendly, courteous and experienced members and qualified coaches. Coaches who believe that everyone is capable of achieving their goals, regardless of age or fitness levels, and who strive towards this end in a friendly, supportive and safe environment. The club caters for athletes from 8 years old upwards, the oldest member being 68 years of age and for Juveniles, Seniors, Masters, Joggers, Walkers, Tri-Athletes and Fit4Life covering such events as Track & Field Athletics, Road Running, Cross-Country Running, Triathlon, Walking and Hiking. Brief History Tír Chonaill Athletics Club grew from three thriving juvenile clubs that existed in Donegal Town, Ballyshannon and Bundoran in the 1970 s and from the road running boom of the time. The main focus for the club was to compete in senior, team and individual competitions, at county, provincial and national levels. With the drive and coaching expertise of Paddy Donoghue, Pat McManus and Eamon Harvey, success came quickly. In cross-country, teams led by Junior International David Wilson won Ulster Novice and Intermediate titles, the later at Finner is an unforgettable day in the clubs history. The club entered the National, Track and Field League in the 1980 s with great enthusiasm and no small amount of success. During a 5 year period they gained top three finishes on numerous occasions and finally were outright Division 1 winners and gained promotion to the Premier Leagues. Kevin McBrearty, Vincent Breslin, Sean Lorenynko, Paul Ward, Paul Ritchie, David Wilson, John Giles, Martin O Halloran and guest and double Olympian Danny McDaid led the team on this historic occasion. More recently in the 1990 s it was the clubs women that have been hitting the headlines. During an eight years period they entered, gained promotion from Division 1 and went onto win the Irish Premier Division League title in 2003 and subsequently represented Ireland in the European Inter Clubs in Belgium in This was a remarkable achievement for a rural club. The names of Mary McLoone, Geraldine Stewart, Michelle Harvey, Catherine Harvey, Sinead Peoples, Ethna McLoone, Marie Rooney, Ruth Little, Bridie Lynch, Jackie Harvey, Emma O Doherty and Sharon Foley have a unique place in club and county athletics. Its interesting to note that a rising star of Irish Athletics guested for the club in the European Club Finals in Gent. Eileen O Keefe today is ranked highly in World Hammer Throwing and will be one of Ireland s stars in Beijing. Over 100 young athletes took part in our Summer Camp in July. The week included a variety of activities and challenges including the fundamentals of major games, Sean Nos Dancing, Art, Gymnastics, Sportshall Athletics, Long Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Hurdles, Turbo Javelin, Shot Putt, Mile Challenge and a Sports Jamboree to finish. Thanks to all the young athletes for attending and to all the leaders and coaches that ensured the programme was well planned and delivered in a safe and fun filled environment.
