1 February 2017 Judy Shanks, Editor Commodore s Message - Ted Shanks Let me first take the opportunity to thank Durkee and Mary Jean and all the volunteers who made the Change of Watch ceremony a success. I must say that Durkee left some large shoes to fill. The monthly Lunch Bunch has grown and continues to provide a pleasant opportunity to enjoy each other s company while dining out. Join us, (you might also get lucky in the dice roll and the winnings usually more than pay for the meal.) While rowing recently we happened to be blessed with a gorgeous sight near the north end of Sequim Bay. Pretty breathtaking, what? Recently we lost a good rowing friend, supporter and benefactor in John Halberg of the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association. He was a contributor and advisor to our own rowing program and he will be sorely missed. (Editors note) Perhaps the above picture is John saying Goodbye Coming attractions in February the Commodore s Ball and the Women on the Water Valentine s Day Dance. If you can, please join in with the crew in preparations and set-up that is under the guidance of Durkee and Mary Jean Richards. As we contemplate more and more the upcoming boating opportunities make sure that your watercraft is ready to go by upgrading and checking all systems, fittings and charts. 2 Vice Commodore s Message -Jim Fitzpatrick Hail to our new Chief and New Year!! And thanks to Durkee, M. J. and all our other great members (my personal thanks to Ray Mitchell for doing a GREAT job organizing this year s cruise schedule!!). The member engagement lately has been outstanding (even more than usual) and really builds a strong organization. Reports on boat safety show decreasing injuries and property damage always good news! Factors may be more responsible skippers and certainly improved boat design and equipment (AIS that can somewhat see around corners, solid state anemometers, Z-drives, et. al., and especially new types of radars, broad band, etc. For boating members new to this area we are in boating paradise. There is a plethora of marine parks, great anchorage and very good marinas from Olympia through Canada and to and including Alaska just talk to our active boating members starting with Ray Mitchell, Ted Shanks, Jim Jones, Durkee, Rudy, etc. A Happy New Year to all and may the wind be always at your back with fair and following seas. 3 Staff Commodore s Message - Durkee Richards Sea level rise on the Olympic Peninsula - everything you need to know Ian Miller, PhD Coastal Hazards Specialist Sequim Bay Yacht Club General Meeting Wednesday February 8, :30 pm John Wayne Marina Meeting Room A skilled science communicator and media spokesperson, Dr. Ian Miller is Washington Sea Grant s coastal hazards specialist, working out of Peninsula College in Port Angeles as well as University of Washington s Olympic Natural Resources Center in Forks. Dr. Miller works with coastal communities on the Olympic Peninsula to increase their ability to plan for and manage coastal hazards, including tsunami, chronic erosion, coastal flooding and hazards associated with climate change. His graduate research focused on the transport and fate of sediment in the coastal zone adjacent to the Elwha River delta. Find him online blogging at the Coast Nerd Gazette. From the Membership Desk - Ann Elliot Commodore Ted Shanks and I had the pleasure of inducting Jay and Myrna Chase at the January general meeting. They are joining SBYC as social members, but have enjoyed a long boating history. Be sure to introduce yourselves and find out about their past boating adventures and share some of yours. Please your thoughts to captnray@bellhill.net and let us know what you think. Sailing - Alan Clark This month I urge all SBYC sailors to support PHRF NW and get a handicap. Even if you only plan to do cruising class in the Duck Dodge and Saturday races an active PHRF membership gives you a handicap and supports the best rating system around for most racers. It's only $60 for the year. PHRF-NW has suffered, like all sailing related activities from a decline in participants, and needs our support. Here is the link. I d also like to consider having an "Invite a Rower" to sail a Duck Dodge later in the season. We need to bring more people, particularly club members, to the grand sport of sailing. MALOLO is undergoing a refit in Anacortes. A cold 7 hour trip on Friday, January 13th, got us to Anacortes, where we hauled MALOLO the next day. I am repairing some soft spots in the deck, putting new nonskid on the deck/cabin top, painting the cabin, getting new ports, changing out jib tracks, have a new longer classlegal spinnaker pole, new aft/forward hatches, will have new instruments/compass, and am changing out my traveler/main sheet system. The plan is to get the boat ready for offshore races. We've already re-done the electrical system. Many thanks to my crew members, Michael Clemens and Norm Hieger who helped chip the ice off the boat for this trip. When we left Sequim Bay, it was 22 degrees. I'd like to get a bit more boat news from our SBYC racers into the Scuttlebutt. I'd ask for short submissions with pictures. Topics might be a short piece about your boat, homage to your long-suffering crew, and plans for the upcoming sailing season. You could also include a favorite on-board recipe or describe your favorite adult beverage. Less than 10 out of every millionaires own a yacht. Make you feel rich? 4

So, he missed the Sail fleet s last race. Skippers were greeted by heavy frost on the decks of their boats when they arrived at the marina. But by the noon start, the day was bright & sunny if still rather cool. A pleasant northerly breeze filled in and all boats finished the course. The Saturday Series will continue on an every other Saturday schedule until the start of the Summer Saturday Series in early May. But here are the dates for the next couple of month's Saturday Series races. January 14, January 28, February 11, February 25, March 11, March 25 (probable date of PTSA, Around Smith Island Race) Rowing Dennis Miller Baby its cold outside Brrrrrrr! Cruising Ray Mitchell The days are already getting longer, the white stuff is gone and it won t be long before we start getting the itch to get out on the water. SBYC has once again partnered with The US Power Squadron and Port Angeles YC. in a combined cruise schedule. It starts April 16 th 23 rd with a Shake Down Cruise down the Hood Canal. As with all of the planned cruises, you can participate for all of the days, start or leave late or early to join up with the main cruise. The second cruise is to Sequim Bay on May 7 th for our Opening Day Celebration. We hope to see all SBYC boats out on the water. The first leg of the third cruise is May 26 th 29 th (Memorial Day) to Telegraph Harbor and Thetis Island. The second leg continues on to to the Gulf Islands until June 7 th The schedule for the rest of the season is in last month s Scuttlebutt and is also posted on the website calendar. Please look it over and give me your thoughts. We need your input so our 2017 calendar can be solidified and acted upon. 6 For those of you who are planning an Offshore adventure or just want to be prepared, you might want to check out the following class. Washington Sea Grant and the Port of Seattle Fishermen s Terminal are co-sponsoring a Coast Guardapproved First Aid at Sea Course on Monday, February 13, 2017 (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) in the Nordby Room, Nordby Bldg. Fishermen s Terminal, Seattle. Topics covered include CPR, patient assessment, hypothermia, cold water, near-drowning, shock, trauma, burns, fractures, choking, immobilization and key contents for a complete first aid kit. To register or for more information contact Sarah Fisken, (206) , or sfisken@u.washington.edu Cost is $100. A little refresher about steorbord and bæcbord In emergency situations, it can be potentially hazardous for someone to get turned around and use their left instead of the boat s left or the like. This is supposedly the reason why terms like port and starboard, referring to one side of the ship or other, were originally used. Although, in the early days, seamen needn t have thought of it as the left or right side of the boat- starboard referred to a very visible and prominent feature of the boat itself, so no chance of confusion. Specifically, starboard is referencing the old practice of having a steering oar on one side of the ship, rather than a centrally placed rudder. (Invented by the Chinese in the 1st Century BC) This was basically just a modified oar generally attached in a vertical attitude to the right side of the ship near the back (with the right side thought to have been chosen simply because most people are right handed).as to the name itself, starboard, this comes from the Anglo-Saxon name for this side steering oar, steorbord, which literally means the side on which a vessel is steered. The fact that the rudder was oriented this way gave a very convenient and completely unconfusing word for sailors, without any mental gymnastics, to know which side of the ship was being referenced; it s just the side the steering oar is on. The original name for the left side of the ship was not port, but rather the Old English bæcbord. This was probably referencing the fact that on larger boats the helmsman would often have to hold the steering oar with both hands, so his back would be to the left side of the ship. After bæcbord came laddebord - laden meaning to load and board meaning ship s side, referencing the side of the ship where loading and unloading was done. This gave rise to larboard in the 6

7 16th century, rhyming with starboard, and again just meaning the side of the ship that faced the dock or shore (to minimize chance of damaging the steering oar and make it easier to load and unload without the steering oar in the way). Port also popped up in the 16th century with the origin similar to why the left side of the ship was called larboard, when you docked or moored a ship with the rudder affixed to the right side, it was always done with the left side of the boat facing the harbor or dock. Presumably the fact that port and larboard first popped up around the 16th century is no coincidence. Once laddebord was slurred down to larboard, to rhyme with starboard, a problem was introduced with the words sounding so similar. There was now a good chance of people mishearing which direction was given, particularly in stormy settings or in a battle or the like. As such, around the early to mid- 19th century, port popularly replaced larboard for this reason. At first many just made the switch on their own, but by 1844 the change from larboard to port was made official in the British navy and two years later in the U.S. Navy and has pretty much become ubiquitous since. Somewhat confusingly (depending on your frame of reference), on many boats until the 1930s when someone said something like hard to starboard or the like, the helmsmen would understand that to mean to turn the ship to the left (port), rather than starboard. Why? Because for a time the standard was to go by the tiller direction (or the bottom of the wheel if there was one) rather than the way the ship will go. Thus, if you want the ship to turn to port, you d move the tiller to starboard (or turn the wheel such that the bottom of the wheel s turn direction goes to starboard). A famous example of where you can see this is in some depictions of the Titanic wreck where First Officer William Murdoch gives a hard to starboard command and the ship then turns to port. This was not a mistake. The helmsmen did exactly as he should have when the order was given. When it is dark, it is customary to have a red light on the port side of a boat or plane and a green light on the starboard side. An easy way to remember which side of the ship is port or starboard (besides just remembering that starboard came from the steering oar placed on the right side of a ship because most people are right handed) is just to remember that a ship at sea has left port. Another one is Star light, star bright, starboard is on the right. The word port comes from the Latin portus meaning port/harbor, which before that meant entrance, passage. This in turn comes from the Proto-Indo-European *prtu, meaning a passage. (Do I plagiarize? You Bet!) 7

Where do the Terms Port and Starboard Come From? For those of you who enjoy boat based expeditions, you will likely be familiar with the nautical terms port and starboard. Port refers to the left hand
