1 INSIDE: Club Sailboats: Volunteer Opportunities Opti Renovations New Members KEOWEE SAILING CLUB April 2018 Next Event: Keowee Cup Regatta, 2018 One of the biggest regattas that we host will soon be here on May 4th to 6th. This is a fun-filled event that involves many club members as sailors, race committee members, meal preparers, registrars and general workers to set up/ clean up. There are numerous opportunities to get involved and enjoy the regatta weekend, even if you are not involved with the racing. The Keowee Cup Regatta VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP is now available... there are a LOT of slots to be filled! This is a great way to Photo of 2017 Keowee Cup by Liz Keenen earn work credit. If you would like to volunteer to help with any part of the weekend s meal preparations, decorations, meal service, and/or clean-up, please go to the online volunteer sign-up at: Keowee Cup Regatta - Event Volunteer Sign-Up. Work Day: April 28 Please note that there is a work day scheduled for 9 to 12 on April 28th to get the grounds and clubhouse in great shape for the upcoming regattas.

2 Keowee Cup 2018 continued You will need to Log In to the KSC Website in order to confirm your volunteer request. This Log In is the same as the one used for the Race Committee sign-ups. Don t have a Log-In? No Worries... if you have not registered for access to the KSC Website; it is a SIMPLE, three-step process and will only take a few moments to complete. Once you have completed these easy Keowee Cup Regatta Dinner Please note that if you plan to attend ONLY the Saturday Night Dinner (Appetizers at 6:30pm, Dinner at 7:30pm, Dessert to follow): Go to the Registration Link, read and follow the posted instructions. If you are interested in ONLY dinner/meal tickets and do not intend to participate in any of the racing activities (this option is typical for some KSC club members who do not race), please select the registration type for Dinner Only in the options. This includes one meal ticket for $15. Then add any additional meal tickets you would like to add to your purchase. Pre-registration is necessary so the Events Committee can accurately plan for the number of members/guests planning to eat. Thank you for planning ahead! 2

3 Club Sailboats: Volunteer Opportunities The Sail Camps and summer use of club sailboats for 2018 are coming soon. To prepare for these events, the club sailboats and the club sailboat area need to be readied. There are many jobs to do that will require several team members working together to execute, including: 1). Stump removal 2). Putting on the standing rigging on JY15 s 3). Repair the hulls of JY 15 s 4). Replace the broken cleats on JY 15 s 5). Repair of Sunfish hulls 6). Striping usable parts from disposal-bound boats 7). Placing of sailboats on dollies 8). Rock removal from beach and launch area. Phil Cook needs volunteers who can work either during the week or weekends. If you can be part of the Club Sailboat repair and maintenance crew, please give him a call, or text: Phil Cook, Club Sailboat Committee Chair (937) or click: remingtoncook53@gmail.com Membership News William and Melanie Armstrong were approved for provisional membership at the April BOS meeting. They live in Simpsonville where William is an engineer for General Electric and Melanie is the EPL Program Director for Furman University. The Armstrongs have visited the club with friends and wanted to get more involved. Bill grew up near Lake George in NY and did some day sailing there. The Armstrongs would like to get into sailing and want their two children to learn as well. They currently do not own a boat but are looking to purchase a day sailor or sailing dinghy. Please welcome them when you see them around the club. KSC Refrigerators & Kitchen Space ALL club refrigerators will be emptied and cleaned out on or before Monday, April 30, 2018 to prepare for the Keowee Cup Regatta. This should be of minimal impact since there is a KSC Work Day scheduled for Saturday, April 28, If you have any personal items that you inadvertently left in the club refrigerators; now is the time to remove them. The Events Committee anticipates needing at least two and possibly all three refrigerators from April 30 thru May 7, 2018 to prep, store and serve the members at this Regatta. Also, please note that the Events Committee will be setting up the Saturday Night SUNDAE BAR in the small kitchen and using the larger kitchen for most of the cooking and storage. Since we are preparing food for the entire weekend --and preparing most of it in-house-- please expect that all ovens/stoves MAY be in use by the events committee from May 3 to May 6, Please plan accordingly and know that kitchen space will be limited. We will do our best to minimize the inconvenience to the members, and thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to provide you with good food and a great time at the 2018 Keowee Cup Regatta. Optimist Renovation Project, 2018 by Phil Cook KSC has four Optimist sailboats. The Opti sailboat is an entry level sailboat for kids as young as eight up through age 15.

This past winter, with approval from the Club Sailboat Chair Rick Harper, I set out on a quest to restore the club s Opti fleet. This quest was fraught with many trials and tribulations.

Then came the task of removing the hardware from twenty+ year old bolts. The gudgeons proved to be the most challenging, requiring use of multiple drill bits and hacksaw blades.

A special thanks to Rick Harper who patiently answered my many questions, and to Rob and Julian Baldwin for the use of their muscles to move the boats from basement to van.

4 Optimist Renovation Project, 2018 by Phil Cook KSC has four Optimist sailboats. The Opti sailboat is an entry level sailboat for kids as young as eight up through age 15. The Optis popularity as a race and training sailboat has grown throughout the world. This past winter, with approval from the Club Sailboat Chair Rick Harper, I set out on a quest to restore the club s Opti fleet. This quest was fraught with many trials and tribulations. Frist, there was a need to remove the squatter mice, spiders, larvae, wasps, etc., from the boats. This required reaching deep into the dark and narrow air chambers a fun task! Then came the task of removing the hardware from twenty+ year old bolts. The gudgeons proved to be the most challenging, requiring use of multiple drill bits and hacksaw blades. Jan and I both had an absolute blast, working on this project and look forward to seeing the Optis in use this spring. A special thanks to Rick Harper who patiently answered my many questions, and to Rob and Julian Baldwin for the use of their muscles to move the boats from basement to van. Owens theme- TIGER SHARK ON THE PROWL! OPTIs 9 and 11 were designed with Keowee Sailing Club Burgee colors as the foundation. OPTIs 10 and 8 were both designed by Keowee Sailing Club Youth.
