1 January 2012 MARK YOUR CALENDARS! January Jan 6th First Friday 6pm Jan 13th, 20th, 27th Sunset Fridays 6pm Jan 19 Auxiliary Meeting 6pm BYSC Clubhouse Jan SAYRA Annual Meeting on HHI February Feb 3rd First Friday 6pm Feb 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th Saturday PHRF Frostbite Series Feb 10, 17, 24 Sunset Friday 6pm Feb??? Capt Iron s Pirates Party Please welcome new BYSC members Will & Penny Abbott From the Commodore I hope each of you have had a wonderful holiday season and are excited about this great new year. The holiday parties at BYSC were terrific as usual and many thanks to Carey Kerney, the social committee and others who worked so hard to make them so. Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club... While this is sometimes thought to be slow time for club activities, many things are going on in preparation for the year ahead. The Racing Committee is putting the final touches on the sailing schedule. Sue Hamilton is actively organizing the Auxiliary Committee to handle social activities and other special events (see below). Maintenance activities are being handled through club work days and the daily efforts of Bo VonHarten and David Dixon. The Laser sailors are continuing to race and sail on Sunday afternoons, even in cold weather and cold water. And the PHRF series will be beginning soon. The tennis courts seem to always have a lot of activity. We have recently installed new lights on the upper courts that are a great improvement over what we have had. And if none of that is your cup of tea, remember the Sunset Fridays each week and the First Fridays with pot luck dinners the first Friday of each month. The heaters on the porch make for a great environment to socialize and make new friends and there is always the fireplace inside. We are trying to schedule a training day for Sailing Race Management and for River Rats in the next few weeks. Our race committees and the River Rats are indispensable to a successful sailing and racing program. We need to add to the number of our members who are qualified to lead race committees. John Barber, Frank Pontious, George Dewhirst, John Fisk and a few others are called on far too often and we need others who can do the job. Make it a point to take advantage of all your club has to offer this year and find a place to serve as well. There is truly not a better recreational or social venue in such a beautiful setting in all of Beaufort County. Come and enjoy your club this year. Andy Kinghorn 2012 Commodore
2 NEW!!! NEW!!! NEW!!! 2012 will mark the beginnings of a new, fun and important committee at BYSC. Please read on and plan on joining us, January 19th at 6pm, at the first meeting of this exciting start-up of the BYSC Auxiliary Committee. PURPOSE of the Auxiliary Committee To promote social enjoyment, fellowship, and the general welfare and beautification of the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club. The goal of the new committee is to provide a dynamic, fun and interactive role for club members to work together in a vehicle that supports and grows the club s onshore activities. We already have the volunteers, talent and enthusiasm. What we lack is the organization and documentation of all that goes on from year to year, and a dynamic avenue for the club to be used to it s full potential. Just so you know, Auxiliary Committees are a huge part of how most yacht clubs are run. This new Auxiliary will have a Board of it s own (President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, etc), subcommittees as needed, a set of By-laws, a budget, and regularly scheduled meetings that empower individual members and develops a team that works together for the good of the club. The Auxiliary Board will support and report to the BYSC Board of Directors. Meetings for the new committee will be the third Thursday of each month, held at the club and in combination with a fun and affordable dinner... all organized by the Auxiliary. Here s your chance to get really involved, make new friends, share your ideas, and make your own mark on our wonderful club. It will naturally take time for this committee to grow to it s full potential, but some areas that I see it encompassing and needing sub-committees to embrace and take charge of right away are as follows: Major Social Events, First Fridays, Children s Events Educational/Entertainment evenings Afternoon group activities Bridge, Poker, book clubs, etc. On-land Regatta Support Grounds Beautification Kitchen Bar Communications BYSC Clothing/Merchandise History of Club I ve already had a very positive response from many club members, men and women, who are eager to be part of this new Auxiliary. Please me directly if you would like to join in on the fun, all while making your club, the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club, better than ever! Look forward to hearing from you! Sue Hamilton at svsafari@aol.com.

5 Cardio-Tennis is Back! Cardio-Tennis resumes Saturday mornings at 9 am, beginning this Saturday, January 7th!! Jill Wilson & Greg Crosby are instructing, so we can have two courts going at one time. Saturday the 7th is already full, so please RSVP early for upcoming sessions. For those of you not familiar with cardio tennis, it is a one hour clinic consisting of a series of drills that improve your court movement, stamina and footwork. It is truly amazing for your game (and overall fitness)--you will notice a huge improvement in your game!! It is open for all ages (over 14) and levels, but be aware that it is HIGH CARDIO! Come on out and give it a try!! The cost is $10 for BYSC members and $15 for nonmembers...we can try to provide childcare on the playground for $3.00, but please confirm with Leigh Ann before showing up with the kids. There are six available spots per court, and RSVP s are required. If you sign up and then cannot make it, then you need to PLEASE try to find a sub or you'll need to pay the fee--this clinic works best when there are 6 people on the court. For more information, please contact Leigh Ann Pingree at Lpingree@charter.net Youth Sailing Team Update The Beaufort Academy Sailing Team traveled to New Orleans in November to compete in the Great Oaks Invitational. The Great Oaks is a national championship for new or developing high school teams. The team was selected based on their performance at the district qualifier in Florida. This years Great Oaks was the biggest ever with 42 teams from as far away as Hawaii. The scores from the first day of racing were used to divide the fleet for day 2 racing. The top half moved into Gold division and the bottom half were placed in Silver. All 8 teams from our SAISA district moved into the Gold Division. The Beaufort Academy Team finished 14th in the Gold Division. Happy New Year Everyone! What could have been better to jump start the 2012 sailing season than sunny and 70 degrees for the Jr Sailing of Beaufort Oyster Roast and Fundraiser? What a great event for Junior Sailing! First, I want to thank George Dewhirst for his dedication and excellent job he performed as Fleet Captain last year. His efforts are greatly appreciated by all of the BYSC, especially everyone who raced on the waters in front of our club in I hope to be able to carry on the tradition of unparalleled excellence in racing for our members and our guests travelling to BYSC to race in This month, BYSC will attend the SAYRA Annual Meeting in Hilton Head and compete in the SAYRA Inter-Club Challenge, hosted by the South Carolina Yacht Club in their tightly matched Harbor 20s will also see BYSC hosting the SAYRA Youth Challenge for the 3 rd year in a row! The PHRF Frostbite Series will begin February 4 th and run for 6 consecutive Saturdays. A new format will allow the option to run 2 races per day, which seems to be well received by all racers polled. The PHRF fleet has also grown again with the addition of Alan & Joan Dechovitz C&C99 Dolce. A Notice of Race will be issued the second week of January. We will be looking for teams to compete in the SCYC Lowcountry Challenge again this year (tentatively March 10). BYSC won this event last year and will be looking to repeat in Looking a little further forward, the Dinghy Spring Series begins April 1 st. Racing will again begin at 2pm each Sunday. The 2012 schedule is so jam packed with great events that it isn t quite ready for this Bow Watch, but we will have it ready to publish next week. Looking forward to a great year of racing and sailing on the river! Chris Duer 2012 Fleet Captain
