1 MARK YOUR CALENDARS! November 2nd First Friday 6pm November 9 12th JY15 North American Championship Races November 10th Change of Watch Party 6 pm November 9, 16, 23, 30 Sunset Friday 6pm November 14th Steak Night 6 pm December 7th First Friday 6 pm December 14, 21, 28 Sunset Friday 6 pm December 12 Steak Night November December December JY15 Round Robin Welcome new members! Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club... Commodore s November 2012 Bow Watch Congratulations and thank you to the new Board members elected at the annual meeting in October. We had six very qualified candidates to offer their leadership services to the club for the next three years. Robert Achurch and Paul Keyserling were elected to a second term on the Board and Courtney Worrell and Woody Norwood will be serving for the first time. Service on the Board involves a big time commitment and investment in our club and we are most appreciative for those willing to serve us. While the calendar year may be winding down, there is still a lot of activity at BYSC. The JY- 15 North American Championships will be hosted by our club the weekend of November We expect boats and we also expect to give them a great regatta. Frank Pontious will be leading the race committee and the Auxiliary Committee is stepping in to coordinate the onshore social activities. Our annual Change of Watch party and ceremony will be held that Saturday night, November 10, as well, so please come out and enjoy one of the biggest club social events of the year. We will be making our annual club sailing awards and recognizing folks who have gone above and beyond for us this year. Congratulations also to our PHRF fleet and Everett Ballenger in particular. As PHRF Fleet Captain, Everett has done an excellent job in creating much activity and excitement with our larger boat racing fleets. Participation and competition has been terrific in both the Frostbite and Fall Series races. This is hopefully just the beginning of more and more activity and opportunities for our larger boats. And perhaps the biggest news is the hiring of our new general manager. Milledge Webb will be joining us on December 3. Your Board believes he is a great fit for our club. He is a Beaufort native and grew up at BYSC. His parents (Charley and Martha Lynn Webb) and his aunt and uncle (Robert and Abbey Morris) are currently members and his grandparents were charter members and key early leaders in our club. But what really makes this a good fit is the experience and qualifications he brings in sailing, boating and waterfront management, summer camps, pools, membership management, and personality. I am convinced you will be pleased with his care of our club. And a special thanks to David Dixon and Renee Dillinger for stepping in and providing interim leadership while we were searching for a new general manager. We haven t missed a beat. That is so typical of David s approach to everything. I hope to see you at the club this month. Andy Kinghorn, 2012 Commodore Heidi Owen Perry and Sally Harvey
2 While not directly related to sailing, this is a 1930s photograph of the Beaufort River taken from Bellamy s Curve (Carteret and Boundary Streets). In the background is the Maggioni Oyster Factory on Lady s Island and on Factory Creek. The land area to the right is the north shore of the Old Point. That area is a mud flat today at low tide. Back then there was enough water at low tide to allow boats to be moored permanently. An example is the Kinghorn family s boat, the Lookout, shown here washed up on the shore after the 1940 hurricane. This location is approximately where the Aimar s house now stands on Bayard Street. The house in the background is on Bayard Street at the end of Hamilton Street. Note that Beaufort WILL flood.

4 First Friday s and Sunset Friday s need volunteers to man the bar! Please sign up and help make our Friday s enjoyable! AUXILIARY COMMITTEE REPORT To the promote social enjoyment, fellowship, and the general welfare and beautification of the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club. The Auxiliary is gearing up to help organize two important upcoming events at BYSC. The annual Change of Watch party & prize-giving Oyster Roast is Saturday, November 10 th. Susan Cosby is coordinating the Auxiliary s help with this event and still needs a couple more volunteers to help pull it all together. Contact her at sailsew8@gmail.com. That same weekend, BYSC is hosting the JY15 North American Championships. Sailors from all over the country will arrive Friday night, November 9 th, and then compete over the next three days against a strong contingent of our own member sailors. The Auxiliary is making sure that all onshore activities are taken care of, and we are looking for more volunteers to help with a variety of jobs, like a welcoming party, setting out breakfast spreads, making box lunches and a meal both Sunday night and Monday afternoon. Sue at svsafari@aol.com if you would like to get involved with this fun event. Some great new Fall/Winter BYSC logo d Clothing & Merchandise will be set-up and available for sale at the Change of Watch Party Nov 10 th and at the Boot Sale Nov 17th. These are WONDER- FUL ITEMS FOR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!!! Limited stock is available through the office now and is also available to order through our website. The first Steak Night was a huge success and sold out early with 70 people signing up. Couldn t have been a nicer evening, better atmosphere or more delicious food cooked to perfection on the beautiful new charcoal grill! Plans are for this to be a monthly event. The next Steak Night is Wednesday, November 14 th. (See the Steak Night notice in this Bow Watch issue for details on RSVP ing) Tailgating in the clubhouse on October 20 th was well attended and fun for all! Lots of laughing, shouting and cheering at both the games on TV and the various games being played outside was the norm. The Bloody Mary bar and chili dog bar organized by Carey Kerney were both big hits. The first of three new swinging benches is situated and ready for enjoying the views courtesy of Chuck Rushing, David Dixon and a group of heavy lifting volunteers who worked one Saturday to erect the frame in a concrete foundation. New for the kitchen is a commercial dishwasher that will be installed soon. This will enhance our ability to use real plates and glasses for some events and to keep the kitchen much cleaner overall. I m told it does 90 second cycles! Thanks to Joan Dechovitz for organizing and preparing the delicious meal of Minestrone Soup, Salad and Bread at the October meeting. Our next meeting is Thursday, November 15th at 6pm. Whether you are a new member or old, this is a great way to meet new friends and get involved in making your club the best ever. The meetings are always very social and fun in nature and everyone is welcome. See you there! Sue Hamilton, President, BYSC Auxiliary Board: Lisa Presnell, Vice-President; Angie Williams, Secretary; Kristi Rushing; Treasurer; Carey Kerney, Social; Nelson Brown, Board Member

8 The last Fall PHRF race was an off and on-again affair! At 5:15 p. we were being pushed backwards by the current, and it was decided to cancel the race. Less that 5 minutes later the sea breeze that had been milling around the McTeer bridge for a while decided to move up the river towards us so it was decided the race was back on. We had to scramble tot get all the boats to the starting line on time, but everyone made it, and the seven boats that had started, had a very pleasant evening sail. I feel the new PHRF format and Fall Series was overall a success, with nine boats in class A and six in the new class B registered. We probably had an average of nine boats on the course for most races, which is quite strong for a Friday evening event. Friday s race was won by Junior Sailing, Dolce was second and Stray Cat third. For most of the races this series the competition was quite close in what were mostly very light and variable winds. Out of the five races we ran, four were on the short A course which suited some boats more than others. Congratulations to Christian Koppernaes on the Junior Sailing Ranger 22 for winning the Fall Series. Rickie Akers and crew on Loki coming in second. Alan Dechovitz and crew on Dolce third place in class A. Congratulations to Reggie Fraser on Slipaway for winning class B with David Tindall second and John Youmans coming in third place. The next BYSC PHRF series will be the Frostbite Series starting sometime in February. As we run these races on Saturday afternoon, it is hoped we can run a little longer races...perhaps towards Parris Island and back (if there is any wind for that series!)!
