INSIDE: Elections, pages 2-5 Women, Wind & Wine Thanksgiving Pot Luck Toys for Kids KEOWEE SAILING CLUB October 2018 The 2018 KSC Dinghy Championship was held on September There was light air on Saturday and we were only able to sail one race. Sunday saw much improved wind and six additional races were conducted. The event was won by multi-champion Rick Harper with Hank Goodman right behind in second place. Cole Owens, (who tied for first and placed second in our Youth Championship) beat out some seasoned adult sailors to finish in third place in the Dinghy Championship. Congratulations to all the sailors taking part in this fun event!! Photo by Liz Keenen Talk Turkey With Us at the Thanksgiving Day Potluck Each Thanksgiving Day a few KSC Waifs and Strays gather to celebrate Thanksgiving with our club family. This year will be no exception. The gathering will start about 2:30 for setup and to enjoy some munchies. Then a traditional Thanksgiving meal will be served around 3:30. A Thanksgiving meal is too important to leave to chance; therefore, it is requested that each group coordinate with Linda Fortson ( ) so that the organizers can ensure that all bases are covered and know how many tables to set. If you leave a voice mail, please include a phone number so Linda can return your call. KSC will provide turkey and ham, plus drinks. Volunteers are needed to cook the turkeys. Each group attending will provide an appetizer, a side dish, or a dessert Also, if you want a special drink, feel free to bring your own. We look forward to seeing anyone who would like to join us there. Guests are always welcome. We have had as many as 50 at prior celebrations. Join us!

Board of Steward Nominations: The following officer candidates have been nominated. For Commodore - Bill Hurni My name is Bill Hurni and I am running for the position of Commodore. This year, I have served as Vice Commodore and in the past, have served five terms as a Steward and three years as the Dock Master. Currently, the Keowee Sailing Club membership is at capacity and with an occasional waiting list. We are the envy of many other clubs, which are experiencing declining memberships and financial problems. It is great to be a part of an organization with the level of member participation and involvement we see in KSC. By continuing our involvement, wise spending practices and maintaining our facility, we will have our club to enjoy for a long time to come. Your vote would be much appreciated. Thank you. For Vice Commodore - Mark Halstead I am running for KSC Vice Commodore. I choose to do this as I have had the great opportunity to serve on the Board of Stewards and have seen first hand how an organization that is driven by its members is only as strong as the willingness of its members to be active and supportive of one another. KSC has given me a place to pursue my love of sailing and a home on the water. It is my goal as Vice Commodore to build community as we continue to grow the club. Join me in the next year in welcoming new sailors, families and strengthening the core membership. For Secretary - Sharon Hamilton Sharon is an avid sailor who has been actively crewing in the Flying Scot fleet for over 10 years and joined KSC as a member about 5 years ago. She lives on the southern end of Lake Keowee and enjoys many other sports, both water and snow, while not sailing at KSC. She volunteers at a variety of community organizations and currently serves in her second term as KSC Secretary. For Treasurer - Terry Patterson Terry, Colleen and Michael have been members of KSC since Feb of Terry is a graduate of the US Naval Academy with a BS of Physics and has an MBA with a focus in finance from the University of Nebraska. He spent five years in the Naval Nuclear Submarine service and had 39 years of experience in the commercial nuclear industry prior to retiring this June. During his 39 years of industry experience he served in a number of management positions including plant manager at two different nuclear stations and Site Vice President at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station. He has managed multimillion dollar budgets for the majority his industry career. He has been active in sailing since 1972 having skippered racing boats from Snipes to the USNA s premier 60 foot racing sloop. Previously a Red Cross certified sailing instructor. He was elected treasurer for

We are also very fortunate to have a group of individuals willing to govern the club as your Board of Stewards. Short bios of each of these members are as follows: Jean Marie Dolenc - Sailing - A lifetime of recreational sailing from sunfish, snipes, scows to Hobie Cats on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin Flathead Lake, Montana and now Lake Keowee * Completed ASA sailing courses in BVI * Accepted as a provisional member in July Completed over 70 hours of volunteer support in my first year. * Assistant instructor for both weeks of the Youth Sailing Camp for the last three years. * Committed crew member on the Ultimate(U) 20. Participated in the 2018 the US North American Championships U20. * Continued volunteer support including Committee Boat participation and Change of Watch * Member of 2018 Board of Stewards * Co-Chairman of 2018/2019 Strategic Planning Committee for KSC Professional career Over 33 years in the specialty pharmaceutical industry with proven success in developing strategies and executing plans that drove high impact results in US and International markets. Kip Goodman - Kip and husband Hank joined KSC in They own a Catalina 25, Coronado 15, Laser, and Tempest. Kip works for Upstate Gymnastics as preschool director and instructor during school year and teaches swimming lessons during summer. Crew for hire, she has crewed on over 25 different types of boats. Racing is #1 but enjoys cruising, and together have cruised the southern East Coast, most of Florida and into the Caribbean. Both enjoy giving RC training seminars at KSC. Kip served on BOS 4 terms. She has also served on numerous committees. She would like to see KSC maintain a friendly, helpful, sailing club atmosphere. Bob Graves - Bob has owned a variety of sailboats ranging in size from 14 to 38. He currently owns Flying Scot #5545. He s been a KSC member since He s currently the KSC Flying Scot Fleet Captain. He s been involved in KSC Youth Sailing Camp; active in KSC and District racing; RC duties and Club socials. KSC was one of the main attractions in his decision to move to this community. Bob s family has enjoyed the activities, camaraderie and competition the Club provides. If elected, he would welcome the opportunity to serve. Phil Cook - Keowee Sailing Club is awesome. I am a strong advocate of the volunteer spirit that is a cornerstone of KSC. At my previous club in Ohio, Kiser Lake Sailing Club, we had a very similar strong volunteer spirit. There, I served as Treasurer, Vice Commodore and Commodore as well as being part of the Annual Sail Training Team. Since becoming a provisional member in April 2017, I 3

have worked hard to organize and improve the Club Sailboat Program and the Junior Sailing Program. Projects completed include: Sunfish rigging, launching, recovery and put-away Training Session for Club Members; Sail-shed organization, numbering and storage; Optimist Fleet - total renovation and reintroduction into the Junior Sailing Program; Club Sailboat - acquisition of new JY, disposal of 4 end-of-life club sailboats; Junior Sailing Week team member for 2017 and 2018 Sail Camps; Repair of damaged club sailboats; Race Committee and Safety Boat for Bare What you Dare and Grits and Haggis Regatta; 5 Year Plan for Club Sailboat program. I love sailing and I love racing. In 2018, I have raced in the Sunfish Master s in Panama City, the J24 Easter Regatta at Columbia, the U20 North American s at Lake Norman, and the 2018 Hospice Regatta at Western Carolina as part of the Lake Keowee On the Road contingent. I recently acquired an absolutely fabulously maintained Merit 22 and have added spectacular Black Sails with plans to race in the next season. I consider myself a person who loves to work hard with intense dedication and passion. This passion is fueled by the many good friends that I have developed here at KSC. If elected, I will commit to applying this drive towards continuing the hard work that it took to get KSC to where it is today. Thank you for your consideration. Jake Kohl - Greenville, SC. Application Engineer at Hartness International; Graduate of the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. Has been sailing/ racing since 1999 and a member at Keowee Sailing club since approximately Owns and races a J22, Formula 18 Catamaran, and an A-cat Catamaran. I firmly believe KSC to be one of the finest sailing clubs in the southeastern US. The club environment at KSC is a perfect blend of camaraderie and high quality activities. These have been managed with a long standing good balance of casual activity with just enough occasional practical formality. I enjoy KSC because the focus has been firmly locked on sailing and the club tends to avoid the types of diversions that distract other clubs from their mission and affect both their focus and their popularity. KSC has remained true to its original calling and I hope to help in continuing that tradition. Glenn Kats - I joined the Keowee Sailing Club 7 years ago when Patti and I moved to Seneca. At KSC we found relaxed and fun members, and an excellent and well maintained facility. Having been an avid sailor since my youth, and having had the opportunity to sail at clubs all over the USA and the world, I believe that KSC has been formed into one of the best sailing clubs in the world. As a member, I have been active in supporting the racing and youth sailing programs. Patti and I have also participated in most all of the social event at the club. In 2017, I was elected to the board of stewards, and also served as the race committee chairperson, until an employment opportunity came up in July of 2017 that took Patti and I up to Michigan until September of this year. Yes it was cold, burrr, and we missed the warm weather. But mostly we missed our friends at the Keowee Sailing Club. But now we are back and ready to get back into having fun at KSC. And to ensure that we stay here, I am now a real estate agent at Keller Williams in Seneca. I would again like to support the club as a board of stewards member. As a club steward I would encourage and assist the club leadership to: 1. Maintain the relaxed environment at the club. 2. Maintain the existing facilities. 3. Evaluate and implement updates to the club that would best serve 4

the general membership of the club, while preserving the primary charter of the club as a sailing and racing club. Thank you for your consideration. Roger Sulhoff Serving the club youth as the coordinator for one week of sail camp is Roger s favorite volunteer activity. He has been distance racing his Catalina 250 WK with one first place in a Turkey Shoot. He crews regularly with Bob Graves on Bob s Flying Scot in club series races and regional regattas. Roger s son-in -law and daughter, Ryan and Sarah Taylor are KSC members with a Hunter 27. He holds US Sailing and ASA certifications Basic Keelboat through Costal Cruising/Navigation. Also, ASA 114 Catamaran and 201 Keelboat Instructor. He is married to Nancy and reside in Gainesville, Ga.. They are blessed with six married kids and 12 grandkids. Daryl Wurster - Kris Johnson and I own a Paceship23. We like the long distance races and just cruising around the lake. We love going to the clubhouse and hanging out with the members. A great cross section of people. I own a construction company and Kris is a registered nurse. Many eons ago, a college friend of mine and I used to sail a Hobie 16 on lakes and once took it to the Florida Gulf Coast. I have sailed in several long distance races, and I am not always last. I have worked on the race boat, helped during work days and can sometimes be found working in the kitchen during events. More recently, I helped to improve the parking and upgrades/repairs to the clubhouse. The Ballot is: Commodore: Bill Hurni Vice: Mark Halstead Secretary: Sharon Hamilton Treasurer: Terry Patterson Stewards: Phil Cook Jean Marie Dolenc (incumbent) Kip Goodman Bob Graves (incumbent) Glenn Kats Jake Kohl Roger Sulhoff (incumbent) Daryl Wurster (incumbent) 5

Women, Wind &Wine The inaugural meeting of Women Wind & Wine held in late September was a smashing success! A total of 16 ladies Kewere able to attend in person, and an equal number expressed an interest in WWW, but were unable to attend the first meeting! In addition to discussing the levels of sailing experience and goals for WWW, attendees learned 3 knots. For those of you who were unable to be at the first meeting, the knots will be reviewed at the next meeting. There are good tutorials online if you want to do any studying ahead of time! The knots learned were the figure-eight knot, square knot & bowline. The next meeting of this new group is scheduled for Sunday, November 18th at 1:00. Please Photos by Colleen Patterson note the time change. The meeting is being held earlier so to have plenty of time to drive the skiffs! This will be the first on the water day so those planning to attend should dress appropriately. Jean- Marie Dolenc and Liz Keenen will be taking the ladies out on the skiffs to practice driving, docking, etc. It is important that all sailors at KSC know how to properly woman the skiffs in the case of an emergency. Please RSVP to Liz Keenen at elizkeenen@yahoo.com. And let her know if you can bring a snack or a beverage - again, not everyone needs to bring something each time this task can be rotated. 6

Reciprocal Privileges by Ken Marsh I came to Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) to speak at a World Food Congress, and visited the Gateway to India. It was engraved with ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE LANDING IN INDIA OF THEIR IMPERIEL MAJESTIES KING GEORGE V AND QUEEN MARY ON THE SECOND OF DECEMBER MCMXI. I then walked two blocks to see the building in the photo, right. The building was the dare I say clubhouse for the Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC) that was founded in It did not get the name Royal easily. It resulted from information from the Secretary of State for India in Council that he had the honor to submit to her Majesty Queen Victoria. This request was contained in a letter from Lord Phillip Wodehouse, Governor of Bombay and patron of the Bombay Yacht Club, that he be permitted to assume the term Royal. Her Majesty was graciously pleased to accede to such request and to command that the said club shall be styled the Royal Bombay Yacht Club. I believe we incorporated as the Keowee Sailing Club with far less pomp and circumstance. But my real reason for this article is to mention that RBYC, as do many other yacht, boat and sailing clubs around the world, offer reciprocal privileges to other yacht, boat and sailing clubs. RBYC offers such privileges with the presentation of a membership card from our club. This is no small gesture. RBYC has guest rooms (and a Billiard room, locker room, gym, inhouse masseur, bar, a dining hall (closed when I visited), a shop and of course access to the Arabian Sea. The accommodations are elegant, and likely one-third the cost of the Taj Mahal Hotel across the street. The photos are of the gentleman, in sailor clothing, who showed me around, with a view of the Gateway of India from a guest room window, and a shot he took of me. So reciprocal privileges are a significant benefit for members of the Keowee Sailing Club, which, by itself, is a substantial benefit. But it doesn t hurt to get out once in a while! Photos supplied by Ken Marsh 7

TOYS for Kids The Toys For Kids Event will be held on Saturday, December 1st from 3:00-6:00pm. This is an annual KSC event. The goal is to collect new unwrapped toys to be donated to the local Department of Social Services. Refreshments, appetizers, and deserts will be served!! Please join your fellow KSC members and enjoy some early holiday cheer while contributing to this great cause.
