COMMODORE S COMMENTS Caught doing Good..one last time from this Commodore! As I write my final comments as your Commodore, many thoughts come to my mind. I think we have had pretty calm seas compared to some of the circumstances our board has had to navigate over the past few years. These last 12 months have seen so much activity: our winter series and frostbite weekend racing, our traditional Spring and Fall racing schedule, two hardworking days of clean up and repairs, our annual parties including Mardi Gras, OL Shultz Hospice Dinner, Cheeseburger in Paradise, 4th of July, Low-Country Boil, & the Christmas Brunch. We thanked Fred Beesley for 50 years of service for a full week beginning with honoring he and Anne at our annual Lobster Boil dinner. We had a record setting year with our youth sailing program. Sail Camp and the University School fall sailing education event both achieved an A+ rating in my book. With the help of our HIYC Y-Flyer fleet, we hosted the weeklong Y-Flyer National Championship here at Harbor Island. Our Sea Scouts Ship celebrated their 25th anniversary and members once again provided handicap sailing for adults. This year we were able to expand our ship store by partnering with to offer a wide range of personalized HIYC logo wear. We created a Historical commission and reactivated the Long Range Planning Committee. You will be hearing from them in the months ahead. A HIYC On Call group was created to have someone who is knowledgeable and available 24 hours a day respond to needs on our property. And last, we began on-line billing and accounting and restructured our 2018 budget into 4 major categories which will allow us to do a better job understanding our fixed and controllable expenses. With all that happening in the life of HIYC this past year, in my opinion, the greatest thing about HIYC is all the Good that happens here. As your Commodore I have made an effort to highlight all that GOOD stuff. About once a month I posted a Caught doing good feature in our Friday blast. It felt like barely a week would go by without a call from someone who had an update about a member s health or family news. You keep up with one another. It s not hard to spot members out on our docks, in the water, or in the parking areas helping one another repair or upgrade a fellow member s boat. You gather to fix or repair projects on the property even if it is not a scheduled work day. I have noticed seasoned sailors taking new members under their care to integrate them into HIYC life. Races are run, and parties and events are a success. Things that are broken get fixed. HIYC members seem to always step up and help each other or assist the club with our needs. You have shown me and your board appreciation for our service. Good happens here I am so happy to have had the opportunity to Catch you. doing good. Gene Lovelace

*** Dock Slip and Mooring Waiting List *** January New Gate Code for access to Harbor Island On January a new causeway gate code will go into effect: The new Harbor Island Members Code may be found in the printed version of the Anchor line that is mailed to each member. Please note that this year all of the old expired gate codes will be erased. The access code for Sail Camp will remain the same as last year s code. If you wish me to you the new Gate Code please contact me by . Don Kaufman

Flotsam Jetsam Regatta This annual event celebrates the end of the year s sailboat racing, awarding winners with trophies from previous events which were cancelled, left unclaimed or were not awarded for whatever reason. This is your chance to claim that trophy you always coveted! The Flotsam Jetsam is named for the nautical terms "Flotsam: floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo," and "Jetsam: part of a ship, its cargo or equipment, that is jettisoned to lighten the weight of a ship." This regatta is a PHRF cruiser race with 4 fleets: Heavy A, Heavy B, Light, and C fleet (main and jib only). Anne Beesley continued her end of the year hot streak with a second consecutive win in the very competitive A class. Jim Waller took B Class while Paul Latour in his S2 7.9 narrowly bested Tim Naeser and j-24 Hofmeister in a race where all three boats had exactly the same PHRF rating. Thanks to PRO Steve Vague and his team of volunteers for setting a course in the tricky southerly breeze which forced a lot of downwind racing.

Change of Watch Regatta January 5, 2019 This annual event celebrates the start of the new year's regattas by recognizing and saluting the new HIYC leadership. The regatta symbolically cements the club's commitment to sailboat racing, refreshed by a new year, new winds, new directions of intensity, and new leadership. The regatta is also counted as the first in the annual Winter Series. The Change of Watch is a PHRF cruising fleet regatta, with 4 fleets: Heavy A, Heavy B, Light, and C fleet (main and jib only). The regatta corresponds to HIYC's Change of Watch ceremony, which occurs the following evening after the regatta date. During this ceremony, the leadership for the next year is sworn in, culminating in a ceremonious "Passing of the Flag" between the previous Commodores in attendance to the Commodore for the new year. Pictured above are many Commodores at the 2010 ceremony, with previous Commodores dating back to Since 1961, the leadership of Harbor Island Yacht Club has passed through many Commodores, just as the Club s Burgee and the Commodore s Private Signal Flag have passed through many hands... So the Change of watch ceremony begins each year. If you have never been to one of these grand events, held at the First Quarterly meeting of the new year, you have truly missed something wonderful. To see the Flags pass through the ranks of our former Commodores is nothing short of an historic event. As well as the Passing of the Flag Ceremony, the Change of Watch is also the time our club recognizes Individual members in several different categories. The official Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions may be found online at Copies of the Sailing Instructions may be downloaded. Copies will also be available at registration.

Winter Series Kent Martin Winter Series Not to be confused with the Schmid Laser Frostbite Series, the HIYC Kent Martin Winter Series runs from the Change Of Watch Regatta (which also counts as race 1 in the series) through the end of February, and is culminated by the Mardi Gras Regatta. This series usually corresponds to the first Saturday after January 1st, and each Saturday through the last weekend in February. This is a PHRF cruising fleet series, with 4 fleets: Heavy A, Heavy B, Light, and C fleet (main and jib only). So, put on your best warm foul weather gear and come enjoy the best Winter sailing that Nashville has to offer! The Winter Series is done in a "pursuit" format. Thus a staggered start is employed, based on the PHRF rating of each boat and the course distance, so that the slowest boat starts with enough time to finish at the same time as the fastest boat, assuming equal conditions, skill and tactics. Ideally, all boats racing should finish within a few seconds of one another. Additionally, there is no committee boat, only a start/finish line and weather and leeward marks. Crossings at the start and finish are on the honor system. Please see the Pursuit Start Times for your assigned time. Please contact the race committee for additional information. All Races are on Saturdays! January: 05 Change of Watch Regatta : 12 Race 1, 19 Race 2, 26 Race 3 February: 02 race 4, 09 Race 5, 16 Race 7, 23 Mardi Gras Regatta Frostbite Series Schmid Frostbite Series Not to be confused with the PHRF Winter Series, the Schmid Frostbite Series is the Laser Fleet's component of the HIYC Winter festivities. The series is named for Rob Schmid, a committed sailor who helped to build the Laser fleet at HIYC and PPYC. Rob is pictured here on the old inflatable runabout, running the Race Committee, circa During the Winter, the temperatures on Old Hickory Lake drop and the wind picks up. Because of this, only the bravest (craziest?) souls with good wet or dry suits dare to compete in the Frostbite. This series runs on Sundays from early January through the end of February. Suit up and come join the fun! All Races are on Sundays! January February 13 Race 1 03 Race 4 20 Race 2 10 Race 5 27 Race 3 17 Race 6 24 Race 7

Annual Christmas Brunch On Sunday December 9th the clubhouse was packed for our annual Christmas Brunch. Hosted by our retiring officers and board, our members turned out to officially open the holiday season at Harbor Island. If you were not able to attend this year, be certain to place this on your 2019 agenda!. You may even be able to prove your sailboat racing prowess by skippering a yacht in a game of Regatta!

New Members Welcome to HIYC new member Stephen McCormick who is better known as Steve or Mac among his friends! In his own words, I grew up on the West Coast primarily in the Seattle area. Sailed a boat my dad and I built on Lake Washington and crewed on larger boats on Puget Sound in my teens and twenties. Moved away and owned a Hobie Cat and a Laser during my thirties. After graduation from the University of Washington my career has been split between finance and logistics operations. Came to Tennessee ten years ago as V.P. of Distribution for Dollar General. Retired in April of 2016 and signed up to do ocean racing with Clipper. The Clipper experience has been about half my life since retirement. The other half has been as the father of five and grandfather to another. Blessed with three teenagers in Tennessee and two 30 somethings one in California and one in London. Looking forward to sailing on a regular basis and being part of the sailing community. Welcome to new member Ben Murphy, Ben is Business Development Manager at Rock House Center, a Biblical Counseling center in Brentwood. He has been sailing since college where he was the Commodore of the University of TN Knoxville Sailing club. He has also coached multiple youth sailing teams and sailing camps both in Knoxville and in Florida. Ben has been active in the y-flyer fleet throughout 2018 and just purchased a y-flyer of his own.

Change of watch Please join us on Sunday January 6th for three very important events: 1) Our Pot-Luck Dinner begins at 5:30 PM (17:30 hours) 2) Our Change of Watch Quarterly Member s Meeting begins at 6:30 (18:30 hours) and includes 3) Our Change of Watch Ceremony during which Bob Carlton will officially take the helm as he is installed as Commodore and Gene Lovelace will pass the sword to Bob. The Change of Watch is always an inspirational and moving event as many of our past Commodores are assembled. It gives all of us who attend an opportunity to reflect on our clubs proud history and to appreciate all who volunteered to lead Harbor Island Yacht Club. Following the installation of the Commodore and our new officers and board, we there will be the annual presentation of member s awards! THE CHANGE of WATCH The HIYC Member Handbook sums it up Following an age-old tradition of yacht clubs, the second Sunday in January (after New Year s Day) is designated as the Change of Watch, whereby the new officers for the coming year are inaugurated. Other happenings on the agenda include the recognition of members achievements over the past year, with this occasion being the opportunity for club members to witness and celebrate these achievements.

Sea Scout News 2018 was a fantastic year for our Sea Scouts. We took part in several regattas including one in Georgia. Spent many Thursday evenings sailing in the Flying Junior sailboats. And got to have a few evening sails in the larger boats as well. Had two teams to take part in the annual (Venturing/Sea Scout) Klondike Derby in East Tennessee. Once again held the Tolling of the Bell ceremony at the O.L. Shultz Hospice regatta. Held our annual Safe Boating class in association with the TWRA. Took part in a Venturing/Sea Scout Rendezvous at Boxwell Boy Scout Camp. Held a big 25 year celebration of Sea Scout Ship 851. Yes we ve been around for 25 years now. Held an Eagle Scout celebration at HIYC. Performed Color Guard duty for a Tolling of the Boats ceremony. And ended the year with the best Sea Scout Ball we ve held yet. Yes it s been a good year and I think 2019 is going to be just a grand. Andy Griswold
