2017 SPRING CLEANUP Spring cleanup day is Saturday the 11th of March. We have much to do in order to comply with the Corps of Engineers recent requests as well as the normal cleanup agenda items. Bring your rakes, brooms, shovels, gloves, and anything else you may need to get our clubhouse and grounds ship-shape for the warm weather. Someone and their twin brother will be having a birthday right around spring cleanup day. Joe Ballard is the one person who has never met a stranger. There are many members of HIYC that are like Joe willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. Thanks Joe, we all hope you have 75 more...but don t count on it.
Our House The HIYC clubhouse and Tiki-Hut are facilities that we all enjoy. Unfortunately some members are under the false impression that the amenities available for use at the club are also available for use at home. Often these items are not returned in a timely manner if they are returned at all. Please respect your club and wash your dishes prior to returning them to the place where you got them. If you notice something that isn t working or in need of repair report it to Marklee and Julie Gordon. If you toss something in the trash can and notice that it is almost full, take it out to the dumpster and put a new liner in the can. If you have a need to borrow something, clear it first with Marklee and Julie and let them know once you have returned it. If you want to saw some wood in the shade under the club house, sweep up your sawdust when you are finished. Thanks,

Several slips are expected to open up this year, as Commodore Butler continues to make headway in seeing that unused or derelict boats are removed from Club property. So, if you have seniority and want a shot at a slip, please take the proper steps ASAP and remember that any member in dues arrearage is not eligible for slip placement or assignment *****ATTENTION ALL MOORING FLEET & ASSIGNED SLIP BOAT OWNERS***** Thank you all so much! Insurance certificates and registration information have been submitted by almost all (if not all) of the mooring fleet. Outstanding! Insurance certificates and registration are not just a requirement for the mooring fleet, but this requirement also extends to all boats that have been assigned slips as well. Dock Admirals are responsible for collecting this information. If you have not submitted a copy or pic of the current insurance and registration information please do so immediately. NOTE: The insurance and registration requirement are year round. We normally only verify this information once a year. For the sake of your fellow club members please always keep your insurance current.
Sea Scout News Twenty-four years ago Cathy and I were approached by the HIYC board with a proposal to start a Sea Scout ship at HIYC. This was and continues to be a community out-reach for the club. And through the years hundreds of youth and adults have been introduced to sailing. Many which may have been financially unable to do so if it were not for our efforts. The Sea Scouts have demonstrated skills to HIYC in boat handing, community service, team work and ceremonial programs within the Club. Sea Scout Ship 851 also well represents HIYC when on shore through community and Scouting activities. Sea Scout Ship 851 is recognized as a top performing unit within the Middle Tennessee Boy Scout Council. For all of those 24 years we have worked very hard to be a free standing entity as far as finances were concerned. Never asking the board to assist in the financing of this organization. We have had many Scouts that joined us whose families could not afford the $24 a year for registration. Much less weekly dues. Thus we have never had dues to help support us and our leaders or the ship would pay the $24 for registration for those youth. So how have we been able to keep and maintain boats and take the kids on fantastic trips? Basically through the donation of items for bilge sales and boats and fund raisers such as boat washes. The boats we fix up, use for a while and then sell. The revenue from these sales being used to finance our organization. We have had multiple boats ranging from 17 feet to 33 feet and many have been used for overnighters, day sailing and racing. There have been a few times that we did not have enough large boats for overnighters due to the number of youth involved at that time. And during those times we would ask the members for assistance so all the youth could get the experience of spending the night on a boat. And the assistance provided by the HIYC members during these times is greatly appreciated. I would like to point out that we have had the pleasure of giving back to the club many times. Such as doing the Tolling of the bell ceremony during the Hospice Regatta. And of course you will see us during clean up days as well. And yes there have been multiple persons to join HIYC as a result of their interaction with our Sea Scouts. The lives that these kids touch is just amazing. This Ship recognizes and is grateful for the years of HIYC support. We recognize the Boards difficult decisions meeting the Corp mandate to reduce the mooring field. Like so many of the HIYC members we have been told to down size, and do it quickly. The Ship has been asked to remove 2 boats immediately from their moorings. Our much loved North American 23 and Pearson 26 were moved to a dock 12 miles upstream at Boxwell Boy Scout Camp and by the time you are reading this will have been sold. And Triad, the Pearson 30 on which so many have sailed over the past 17 years, we re told it may have to go too. I guess you can tell I m not a happy camper right now. But the positive spirit of our youth continues to impress all us that are fortunate to get to work with them. The reduced funding this year means we cannot afford to do a long summer trip. The Scouts are discussing local boating activities to fill the void. But, there is still talk among the youth about heading back to the Apostle Islands again next year. (Got to love their positive attitude.) Without large Sea Scout boats, we will once again need to call upon HIYC members for assistance so the kids can learn to sail on larger boats and do overnighters. And with some help we like everyone else in our Club will get through this. Thanks for your continuing support. Andy Griswold
COMMODORE S COMMENTS Thanks to the uncanny warmth of this winter season, a highly successful Winter Series just wrapped from the standpoint of the number of boats that went out! Beginning with the Change of Watch Regatta, slugging thru 5 weeks of pursuit racing, and culminating with the inaugural Mardi Gras Regatta; one could say that sailing is alive and well at Harbor Island Yacht Club! No less than an average of 11 boats went out each weekend. Albeit an imperfect animal started by Kent Martin, the winter series continues to provide the most fun according to the competitors. Personal shout-outs go to four individuals this season: To Bruce Richards, who continues the Laser Frostbite Series year after year! To Tim Naeser, our chief race Boss Man, for keeping track of our wayward wanderers of the winter series! To Laura Johnson, head of the area sailing meet-up group, for providing enough lively crew for all the skippers! And to Zyg Durski, C Fleet skipper extraordinaire, who valiantly went out every weekend, and exhibited a true example of the Corinthian spirit! Thanks to these four and to all the crews & skippers for making the season such a success. On to Spring! Much will happen in March beginning with the Warterfield March Winds Regatta. Our March Board meeting has been rescheduled to a week earlier than previously posted to March 7, in order to organize for Spring clean-up on the following Saturday, March 11. By March 7, all boats that have been requested to be moved should have taken place. On clean-up day, we will begin with mooring replacement and hauling boats with trailers. Your Board, along with Mooring Admiral Don Kaufman and Harbor Master Konstatin Tchernouchenko, have worked tirelessly in planning for this effort. This will be a work in progress as some boats will need to be slipped while their moorings are relocated. Don Kaufman is now accepting volunteers to develop crews and work days. You don t have to have a boat in the mooring field to help with this major club undertaking that will reshape and change the view of the harbor. The following weekend is the venerable Cully Cobb 50K, March 18; so no rest ye ole weary salts! One week off and it s game on again with the O.L. Shultz/Hospice Cruiser and Open Regatta weekends in April. More about these coming in the April Anchorline and the Friday Scuttlebutts. Speaking of which, our delivery service tells us that a bit less than 60% of you actually open the Scuttlebutt ! Friday Scuttlebutts are the best way to get new information fast. If you are not currently receiving the Friday Scuttlebutt, let me know at rsbutler3@aol.com or text me Now, a look back down memory lane in the not-so-distant past, thanks to Mary Miller: Enjoy some life, go sailing!

*** New Members *** Iain and Christine Montgomery have been married just over a year. Iain works as a producer in Nashville, sailed as a kid and got interested again about 8 years ago. Most of his experience is on the bow of an S2 7.9, but he's been skippering his own V15 for the last couple of seasons and is looking forward to doing more dinghy and big-boat sailing at HIYC. Christine works as an equine veterinarian in Franklin and crews with Iain occasionally. She's also sailed some regattas on big boats. Besides sailing, they enjoy hiking, camping and running with their dog, Wheaties. *** Donations Needed *** This year s Alive Hospice Regatta will once again include a silent auction. If you have contacts that may be interested in donating for this charitable event please forward the information to Nelson Miller. Anything that could be of value to your fellow members will be considered. Dinners, cruises, tickets, timeshares, and dates are all on the table. Thanks, Old Hickory Lake certainly has some great places to get out of the summer heat

*** 2017 Alive Hospice *** I consider myself very blessed to have been a part of this club for most of my life. My family joined HIYC when I was a child, and I have grown up with a love and respect of the water. It has been bittersweet watching change at the club, I do know however, that there is one constant in life change. When the club decided to create a new regatta to replace the beloved Tennessean, I had mixed emotions, but decided to get fully on board when I heard it would be in support of Hospice. In writing this, my only regret is that you will not hear the passion from which I speak. My WHY? for supporting the Alive Hospice Regatta Lena, Sue, Cindy, Caroline, Ellen, Jeff, Larry, Tom, Al, Cliff, Marilyn, Chuck people. People who were part of my world here on earth. People who were given compassionate care from a Hospice organization in their last days. Hospice care is multi-faceted. It ranges from the advice given to families about placing photos of loved ones who have passed near patients to help in their transition; to medical expertise of administering breathing treatments or morphine pumps to ease pain; to Beth and PR back in the day providing round the clock care facilities/residences for those who many times cannot afford to pay. My giving and support provides Alive Hospice to give advice, love, care and dignity to those who are going before me. There is a comfort I take in knowing that my donation of time, energy, and a little money has given a patient and his/her family grace and closure during the most tender and bittersweet time in life. Should I be one of the many who may need Hospice care, I will be glad that I did what I could to make it possible. Beth Marshall 2017 is the 4th year HIYC has joined Alive Hospice of Middle Tennessee for the OL Shultz Regatta benefiting Alive Hospice, a non-profit organization that serves Middle Tennessee families at a sacred time, and offers grief counseling services for anyone. Why? In 2013 former HIYC Commodore OL Shultz, an active club racer, was served by Alive Hospice, and the same year HIYC learned about the National Hospice Regatta Alliance, which oversees 30+ regattas in the U. S., raising monies for local hospices. The HIYC Board voted to replace the Tennessean Regatta weekends, with this new regatta in OL s memory, and give back to the community. Save the dates of April 1-2 (OPEN) with a beer and pizza party on April 1, and April 8-9 (CRUISER), with a Celebration of Sailing Life Steak Dinner at HIYC on April 8. Details on all events, a Silent Auction, and how to make a Burgee donation in honor of a loved one, will be coming soon in your Friday Scuttlebutt Blast.
Letter to the Editor: Kind sir, Please make note to your Members that the current Commodore, His Royal Highness R.S. Butler, Esquire has done a yeoman s job in Draining the Swamp. Specifically, he has taken on the unenviable task of begging, pleading, asking, beseeching, imploring, persuading, entreating, supplicating, petitioning, requesting and importuning Members to remove or trailer unused boats so as to accommodate the demands of the Corps of Engineers. Just like naming the new fridge after our Rear Commodore, we should name one of the Mooring Balls after the current Commodore, although I am not suggesting he needs bigger balls. Your humble servant, Water G. Rat *** Other Odd Stuff & Pictures *** The snip below is a screenshot of Joe and Maribeth Hagan s recent passage from Isla Mujeres Mexico to the Dry Tortugas National Park. For those of you who are not familiar with Spot, it is a service that allows family and friends to keep track of your progress and to alert authorities in the case that help is needed at the press of a button. It works when you are off the grid. The service claims that they have facilitated 4,937 rescues so far. Many HIYC members have tracked the Hagans on their Year of living Dangerously, The Garrisons traveling to, and around the Gulf of Mexico, and even a madman (Steve Vague) crossing the country via creeks and logging trails on a motorcycle. The wonders of technology.
