2 2018 SPRING CLEANUP Spring cleanup day is Saturday the 24th of March. Every year we have a lot to do to get ready for our busy spring and summer social and sailing activities. We depend on volunteers so bring your rakes, brooms, shovels, gloves, and anything else you may need to get our Clubhouse, Grounds & Launches ship-shape for the warm weather. All who Volunteer will be served a hearty lunch! Be sure to stick around for the Spring Quarterly Meeting

Please remember Tennessee law (and HIYC rules) require that your boat display a current registration sticker. Also your boat must have a current insurance policy. Please provide your Dock or Mooring Admirals with proof of insurance and TWRA registration. 6 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Since taking the helm of HIYC, things have gotten busy quickly. Our sailing club operation has lots of moving parts, with great help from our volunteer officers and members. After assuming this role after 2 years of serving on the board, each Commodore has some dreams and goals. Here are a few I ve been working on for 2018 ONLINE SHIP STORE Announced in the 2/9 Blast, HIYC now has a relationship with Coral Reef Sailing Apparel to provide a great assortment of online HIYC logo-wear that can be custom ordered by each member. You can choose a shirt, jacket, vest, etc in the size and color of your choice and have it shipped to you. The web address is listed in this Anchorline and will be in all future HIYC publications. Susan Vaughn will still stock our local ship store for popular items such as HIYC burgees and license plates. HIYC ON CALL - A group of volunteers have agreed to respond to emergencies at HIYC. They have the skill and knowledge to assist us in minimizing our damage due to a plumbing, water, electrical, weather related, or other issue that you may discover. They will also be available for on-water emergency guidance, especially for new sailors out of our harbor. Our current ON CALL team is Bob Carlton, Randall Butler, Joe Ballard, and Nelson Miller. They are working out the details of a single phone number to reach them. During the month of March please contact Bob Carlton directly at HISTORICAL COMMISSION - HIYC is 58 years old and has a rich history. The following people have been commissioned to preserve, document, and format articles, photos, and other archives that have been collected: Fred Beesley, Cathy Cobb, Beth Marshall, Rob McDonald, and Zyg Durski. If you have contributions, please let us know. SOCIAL MEDIA - We are a growing membership, and we need new ways to connect faces with names and communicate with one another. It s not my skillset, but we have members who are experienced with FB, twitter, Instagram, etc. I hope we can create a secure online directory that will post photos with phone number and address. More later. These are few projects in the works, and I m interested in hearing your ideas to make HIYC a great sailing club for racers, cruisers, and families. Friendship and Support, Gene Lovelace

HISTORY In 1999, HIYC members decided to honor Dr. Cully Cobb; one of the founding members of the club. Throughout Cully s many successful regattas through the years, he continued to be a perfect example of what we at HIYC strive for and hold as the true Corinthian spirit of our Club s Mission. He served this club and the community in so many ways, it is impossible to list them. Dr. Cobb was also one of the most successful racers nationally in Lightnings as well as in other dinghy classes. Locally, he enjoyed many successful outings in his beloved Swiftsure 33, Chloe. Come out and race! Share in the honor of his memory by participating in the Cully Cobb 50K! SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - The Sailing Instructions are available at registration. A draft is available at CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event. Heavy handicap class A: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings of 145 or less, Spinnaker assumed. Heavy handicap class B: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings 146 and greater. Spinnaker assumed, but may sail without spinnaker and take a 12 second allowance. The decision to sail without spinnaker remains in effect for the current year. Light handicap class. Displacement below 4999, Spinnaker assumed. C class. Jib and Main only. The Regatta Committee may combine or split classes at its sole discretion. 8 NOTICE OF RACE The Warterfield March Winds Regatta March 3, 2018 INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Warterfield March Winds,March 3th 2018 on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN. HISTORY - The Warterfield March Winds Regatta, held on the first full weekend in March, bears the name of Charley Warterfield who died unexpectedly in December of This remarkably talented architect and sailor served as our Commodore in Bob Cotton followed Charley as Commodore in Together, they reflected on the fact that our club had no organized sailing event during the very month of the year most noted for wind. The Board of Governors responded favorably to their proposal to establish the March Winds Regatta as a permanent cruising class sailing event to be held as a two day regatta early in March. Since the inaugural March Winds Regatta (won by Chuck Konesky), the tradition has continued that the retiring commodore take responsibility for serving as regatta chairman for the event. RULES The race will be governed by the rules as defined by The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). Changes to the following RRS sections will be made for this race: 29.1 (Individual Recall), 32.2 (Shortening of Course after the Start), 35 (Time Limit and Scores), 42.3(h) (Propulsion- Exceptions), 61.1(a) (Informing the Protestee), 62.1(a) (Redress), A4.1 (Low Point Scoring System), A8.2 (Scoring Series Ties), A11 (Scoring Abbreviations), Race Signal AP (Postponement). ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY The regatta will be open to all cruiser or racer/cruiser boats properly registered with HIYC. Participants may enter the race by completing registration at the table in the HIYC clubhouse before the skippers' meeting. Each boat sailing in a handicap class must have an established PHRF rating that has been assigned

9 SCHEDULE SATURDAY, March 3, :00 am: Registration, Coffee and Donuts 10:00 am: Skippers Meeting 11:25 am: Warning Signal Trophy Presentation - after race SCORING Wind dependent HIYC PHRF handicaps and Time-on-Time adjustment factors will be used. Time Correction Formula (TCF) = 700/(f+PHRF) where f = 650 for light air, 550 for moderate air, and 450 for heavy air as assessed by the Race Committee. Ties will be broken in favor of the boat with the lowest sum of corrected times for all races. RACING The racing will consist of a river distance course for all classes. One race will constitute a series. No races will be started in less than three (3) knots of sustained wind as determined by the Race Committee. THE SITE, RACING AREA AND COURSE Harbor Island Yacht Club will be the site of all shore-side activities. The racing area is between mile Cumberland River and mile 227 on Old Hickory Lake. The Distance Course will begin at a starting line between mile 220 and mile 225. The course will be further described in the Sailing Instructions. The course, set on Old Hickory Lake, may intersect the navigational channel. Commercial traffic (barges) and deep-draft craft in the channel have right-of-way over sailboats and must be treated with utmost respect. When a boat sailing under these rules meets a vessel that is not, the rules of Part 2 (When Boats Meet) are replaced by the Inland Navigation Rules. Any boat impeding the passage of a right-of-way vessel is subject to protest by the race committee or the protest committee. ON-THE-WATER COMMUNICATIONS VHF radio channel 68 will be used by the Race Committee for warnings and communications to the competitors while on the water. PRIZES - Trophies will be awarded for all classes to the top three (3) finishers. WAIVER - Competitors in this event are participating entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. Competitors agree that the race organizers (organizing authority, race committee, protest committee, host club, sponsors, or any other organization or official) will not be responsible for damage to any boat or other property or the injury to any competitor, including death, sustained as a result of participation in this event. As an inducement to the race organizers to produce the regatta, each competitor agrees that by participating in this event each competitor is deemed to have waived all claims against and released the race organizers from any and all liability associated with such competitor s participation in this event to the fullest extent permitted by law and is deemed to have warranted that he has obtained this same release of the race organizers by each crew member. INSURANCE - Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance.

10 Winter Series Update As we all know too well, winter weather can be unpredictable and this year has been no exception. Extreme cold, unseasonable heat, pouring rain were all in evidence in January and February, Three Races were held to date with the other cancelled due to poor weather. It appears that Bill Hofmeister with three wins is untouchable and has captured the series. A full recap of the results will be posted in the April Anchorline. Ninja with Hof and crew

12 *** New Members *** My name is Martin and I moved to Tennessee from England in 1996 where I met the girl of my dreams. Rhonda and I married almost 18 years ago and our youngest son, Christopher, is now a junior at Hendersonville High School. Alex, our older son, will soon complete a Physics PHD in California. We are incredibly proud. My wonderful wife works as an accounting consultant/ manager for luxury homebuilders in Sumner County. She also enjoys the arts and has a multi-media studio. After a successful career composing music for commercials, film and TV, I developed an interest in writing. My first book, One Sumner Tale, documents a kayak and camping adventure along the shores of Old Hickory Lake. I learned more about my neighborhood and the history of the United States in just twenty miles of kayaking than I ever did from jet-setting for thousands of miles. Even more exciting, I discovered HIYC. My interest in sailing led to the purchase of a Catalina 25 fin keel and I enjoy working on her renovation. My family and I are all very excited about joining the club and look forward to meeting you. Until then, may the wind fill your sails. May God save the Queen and perpetuate HIYC. *** Donations Needed *** This year s Alive Hospice Regatta will once again include a silent auction. If you have contacts that may be interested in donating for this charitable event please forward the information to Bob Carlton. Anything that could be of value to your fellow members will be considered. Dinners, cruises, tickets, timeshares, and dates are all on the table.

13 *** Mardi Gras *** February 10th saw the HIYC Clubhouse transformed into a New Orleans Supper Club for the 2nd Annual HIYC Mardi Gras Party. With the Becca Darling Quintet playing Jazz, Tasty Gumbo, Cake and an HIYC version of the world famous French 75 Cocktail it was a night to remember!

15 Bill Killebrew and crew s excellent adventure We got to go sail Lightings in Ecuador We were attending a Lightning regatta last winter down near Orlando and the class secretary popped the question, Do you guys want to do the Worlds? We (Chandler, Mike and myself) had sailed the qualifier in 2016 at Rochester and our finishing position was probably as high as I had ever scored in a national regatta but still, we were strongly in contention for the MOP award (luckily there wasn t one) since we were approximately in the middle of the middle fleet. Which begs the question, Um, what about the other boats ahead of us? Apparently they had something else to do so without really thinking about it I turned and asked Mike and Chandler if they wanted to go, they said yes and that was that. Leaving the money question aside I realized that my best assets were M & C, both unemcumbered by regular jobs requiring permission to leave and both exceptional sailors, skippers, crew whom I had sailed with, against and around since I started in Lightnngs in the 80 s. It is hard to overstate how great that was, not that we necessarily agreed on everything or were always in sync. The boats were shipped from Moorestown NJ, about 12 hours away. One can charter but it s risky at best. Hof has a good story about that. I was determined to sail my own boat so I drove north in the fall and spent a day at a company called Albion, owned by Mark Schneider who is a Lightning sailor as well. He facilitated loading the boats in shipping containers, 4 per container for the shipment to Salinas. Took all day, stacking and packing. I think I had the longest drive. After a lot of flying (thank you Kathy Osborne) and a midnight drive from Guyaquil to Salinas we found the club and our boat, went through the usual weighing and measuring ordeal and finally got in the water with the help of a lot of paid club employees. That was really nice though it produced a little guilt they get paid around monthly and it s a sought after job. I really liked all the locals I met, rich and poor. We sailed in the masters division of the South American Nationals, getting to know the venue and some of the competition and we got beaten up on the water some. We then had a couple of days off followed by the Worlds. We got beaten up somewhat more but also had a few moments of glory, our kind of glory where someone insists that you sail to the wrong side and you do so and it works! (It didn t work the next time) The mark roundings were plenty hairy and sometimes bad things happened. We had some breakage, mostly minor. I got to visit the protest room due to an altercation at a mark but it was OK, the kids in the other boat wanted redress because their sail fell down. I didn t think we made it fall down and I said so and they believed me. I got to meet their parents at dinner and all was right with the world. Mike and Chandler flew back after the regattas and Libby and I visited the Galapagos for 5 days before flying back ourselves. That part was easily as great an experience as the sailing I had always wanted to see the place and it lived up to its reputation. We spent five days tripping over the most outlandish critters right outside the door and down the street and we made friends with a local guide who spoke a little English. He took us to a Tortuga preserve area and to a couple of collapsed volcanic domes. I think we barely scratched the surface there but it was some good scratching. I want to go back. Unfortunately our container was opened and searched somewhere on the trip back by authorities seeking drugs and drug smugglers. Our boat and the one stacked on top were pulled out, opened, stuff, sails, etc all pulled out, everything searched thoroughly. They didn t find any drugs. Stuff got packed back into wrong boats, boats were pushed back in backwards and not tied down adequately. We had some damage and at this writing is still in NJ being repaired and I have missed the Lake Monroe regattas where all this started for me and probably the NOOD. So it goes. I was asked by a couple of Lightning people if I would do it again (drumming up the numbers don t you know) and I said yes but maybe not Finland. I heard it was big breeze and 34 degrees and sailing at midnight. I can get that here. Bill Killebrew 15308
