3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Ahoy and Happy Summer, Which means cookouts like the Cheeseburger in Paradise Party, the Low Country oil and Raft-up, our annual 4 th of July fireworks celebration and, no doubt, countless small private get togethers in backyards, cockpits and the Clubhouse. One such gathering took place last Sunday when member Jim Doran had a boat renaming party on his new Tartan 31, now called Messing About. Congrats, Jim. It also means Sail Camp, a legacy program of HIYC, thanks to the foresight of members like Mandy and William Hofmeister, arbara Ward, ill Killebrew and ruce Richards. This year the Camp expanded its fleets of Lasers and Optis to include three V15s, which gives us two man boats able to offer the experience of sailing with a jib and main. Thinning the Opti fleet (we had 24 but seldom need more than 12), we sold six to rock Short s fledgling Montana sail camp. This added funds to the Sail Camp account and helped another initiative to further our mission of Developing Lifelong Sailors. Another reminder that each Friday s Awards ceremonies are a joy to experience, as junior sailors are complimented and congratulated on their newfound or, for returning campers, improved sailing skills. The end of Summer Racing on June 18 is a really good idea by Race Committee Chairman, Tim Naeser, since efforts to get racers to the starting line in the windless summer heat have been understandably unsuccessful. At the June 11 Quarterly Meeting, Junior Governor rian Smokler and member Julie Gordon volunteered to contact members to confirm contact information, addressing the perennial problem of keeping folks abreast of Club happenings via and phone. Please respond if they reach out to you. Summer is also the time when members use their boats more, so Mooring Field members are reminded to please be respectful of the 48 hour rule of Courtesy Dock usage. Good news regarding HIYC logoed hats and clothing. Susan Vaughn, our able, dedicated and long standing Ships Store Manager can get you about anything you want; but, suggests you search for stuff here, which she can order and have embroidered with our Club logo. 4 NOTICE OF RACE 1st Annual Never Done Summer Race June 18, INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the 1st ever Summer Race, June 18, 2016 on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN. 2. HISTORY None 3. RULES 3.1. The race will be governed by the rules as defined by The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) Changes to the following RRS sections will be made for this race: 29.1 (Individual Recall), 32.2 (Shortening of Course after the Start), 35 (Time Limit and Scores), 42.3(h) (Propulsion-Exceptions), 61.1(a) (Informing the Protestee), 62.1(a) (Redress), A4.1 (Low Point Scoring System), A8.2 (Scoring Series Ties), A11 (Scoring Abbreviations), Race Signal AP (Postponement). 4. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - The Sailing Instructions will be available at registration. A draft is available at 5. CLASSES - The following classes are anticipated for this event Heavy handicap class A: displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings of 5 or less, Spinnaker assumed Heavy handicap class : displacement above 5000, PHRF ratings 6 and greater. Spinnaker assumed, but may sail without spinnaker and take a 12 second allowance Light handicap class. Displacement below 4999, Spinnaker assumed Handicap class C. Non spinnaker (former Jam class) The Regatta Committee may combine or split classes at its sole discretion. 6. ELIGIILITY AND ENTRY 6.1. The regatta will be open to all cruiser or racer/cruiser boats properly registered with HIYC. Participants may enter the race by completing registration on line or at HIYC clubhouse at the registration table before the skippers' meeting Each boat sailing in a handicap class must have an established PHRF rating that has been assigned by the HIYC- PHRF Committee. If your boat is not listed on the HIYC Ratings List, please submit a HIYC Rating Application prior to the regatta. To obtain a PHRF rating, please contact Peter ennett at peter.bennett@nissan-usa.com

5 9. SCORING9.2. Time Correctio 9.1. Wind dependent HIYC PHRF handicaps and Time on Time adjustment factors will be used. n Formula (TCF) = 700/(f+PHRF) where f = 650 for light air, 550 for moderate air, and 450 for heavy air as assessed by the Race Committee Ties will be broken in favor of the boat with the lowest sum of corrected times for all races. 10. RACING The racing will consist of a river distance course for all classes One race will constitute a series No races will be started in less than three (3) knots of sustained wind as determined by the Race Committee. 11. THE SITE, RACING AREA AND COURSE Harbor Island Yacht Club will be the site of all shore-side activities The racing area is between mile Cumberland River and mile 227 on Old Hickory Lake. The Distance Course will begin at a starting line between mile 220 and mile 225. The course will be further described in the Sailing Instructions The course, set on Old Hickory Lake, may intersect the navigational channel. Commercial traffic (barges) and deepdraft craft in the channel have right-of-way over sailboats and must be treated with utmost respect. When a boat sailing under these rules meets a vessel that is not, the rules of Part 2 (When oats Meet) are replaced by the Inland Navigation Rules. Any boat impeding the passage of a right-of-way vessel is subject to protest by the race committee or the protest committee. 12. ON-THE-WATER COMMUNICATIONS VHF radio channel 68 will be used by the Race Committee for warnings and communications to the competitors while on the water. All competitors must have an operational VHF radio. 13. PRIZES - Trophies will be awarded for all classes to the top three (3) finishers.. WAIVER - Competitors in this event are participating entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. Competitors agree that the race organizers (organizing authority, race committee, protest committee, host club, sponsors, or any other organization or official) will not be responsible for damage to any boat or other property or the injury to any competitor, including death, sustained as a result of participation in this event. As an inducement to the race organizers to produce the regatta, each competitor agrees that by participating in this event each competitor is deemed to have waived all claims against and released the race organizers from any and all liability associated with such competitor s participation in this event to the fullest extent permitted by law and is deemed to have warranted that he has obtained this same release of the race organizers by each crew member. 15. INSURANCE - Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance. 16. LAUNCHING & ACCESS - Launching, docking and hauling may be done at Harbor Island Yacht Club free of charge. Access to the club is through a security gate. 9 Welcome Aboard! We are the Price family...daryl, Jennifer, aylee, Nathan, and Drew. We also have 2 doodles Lulu and Cooper. We ve lived in the MJ area for about 15 years. aylee (20) is currently attending UTC, Nathan (13) is in 8th grade at Holy Rosary Academy, and Drew (9) is in 4th. aylee has a summer job working at Anthropologie in Green Hills and interning in the HR department of the Nashville Zoo. Nathan is a 1st year ZooTeen volunteer and really excited about the upcoming Sail camps. Drew will be swimming on the Old Hickory CC swim team and attending camps. Neither Daryl nor I have any sail experience, but we are excited about the opportunity to learn to sail. We ve lived on the island for over a year and have enjoyed watching all the activities and regattas the sail club has to offer. All 3 of our children have been involved with sail camp throughout the years and now we are looking forward to being a part of the Sailing community. 10 Sea Scout News Late spring and early summer found our Scouts very busy. We hosted approximately 30 youth in our annual Safe oating Class which we hold in association with the TWRA which actually teaches the class. The class was then followed by a wonderful afternoon sail in which all of those youth got to spend some time out on the water. The next weekend our Scouts hosted the fourth annual Sea Scout Pfeffer regatta which was held at the oxwell oy Scout camp. Sea Scout and HIYC club member Kevin McKellar was the P.R.O. Teams came from as far away as Atlanta, GA. We had three teams taking part in the event one of which took first overall. Congratulation to crew James MaGuirk and skipper Paul Young. Next in preparation for the summer trip the Scouts took swim tests while our leaders followed standard safety procedures. And we got to do more sailing and even work on some navigation skills. For the summer trip our group was based out of Waveland, MS. I did not get to go but it was clear that all had a great time. While they did not get to sail on this trip they went to the beach, visited museums, a zoo and the battle ship USS Alabama. Andy
