Sail Camp 2014 Another successful year for the Nashville Sailing Foundation, the Club s non-profit camp operator camp - this our 26th! Four full weeks, two Saturday work days for counselors and volunteers, nearly 100 campers, 18 counselors, many volunteers, a four full day (with homework) US Sailing Instructor Certification Course for our up and coming junior counselors, 8 watermelons and 42 pizzas. Special thanks to volunteers Dave Brandon, Dave Desforges, Marc Fortune & Jackie Byrom, Rob Hemple, Paul & Dana Latour, James O Dell and John Robertson for worked before, during and after the Camp to make this another great year of furthering the NSF Mission To develop Lifelong Sailors. 3 By the time you read this we will have just celebrated the 4 th of July. I can t believe that half of the year has gone by. It has been busy and we ve accomplished a lot in that time. Such as the North Lot paving which has been a big hit, should have done that a long time ago, some have said. I just received a thank you note from Anna Gene O Neal, CEO of Alive Hospice, thanking us for participating in the Hospice Alliance Regatta, (OL Shultz Hospice Regattas) saying that the event exceeded their expectations. You each had a hand in its success and her thanks go to you for your support. In addition, the new C Dock is complete, except for electrical and water. Plans call for that to happen now that Sail Camp is over, so as not to interfere with the little people s activities. We had a great Sail Camp and thanks go to all those volunteers who made it happen. The new website is coming along and a big Thank You goes to Rick Smith for all of his work in getting it going. While you haven t seen much of it, those of us who have can assure you that it will great. I am also happy to announce that Drew Griswold has agreed to be the Webmaster of the new site. You will be seeing and hearing a lot more about this in the coming weeks as it gets up and running. The Board has decided to change our approach to trophies. Instead of handing out trophies at every race, we are getting a plaque for each race which will have the winners engraved on it. These will hang in the clubhouse for all to see a ten year history of the winners by fleets. Our thanks to Governor, Marcelo Perez for his work on these. We are also working on a survey that we will be sending out asking for your input on issues at the club. This will be your opportunity to help shape our future, so be looking for that. I will advise in the Blast when it goes out. If you hadn t noticed, in the Sun Room, the new piece of furniture that was donated to HIYC by Dana and Paul Latour. A great addition to our clubhouse and we thank them for their gift. If you missed the Low Country Boil/Quarterly Meeting, you missed a feast. The meeting wasn t much, but the food was great. Our thanks go to Graciela and Marcelo Perez, as well as the others who made this happen. We had George The Diver take a look at the area previously known as Brock s Rock and it is not a rock at all. Tree stumps and plenty of them. The area, about 200 long, is on average 5 deep and loaded with tree stumps about 4 under the water. We have a Danger Buoy marking the center of it and will place two others, one on ether end (North and South) as soon as we can. You should avoid this area. Our new members in May were Rebecca McGrath and Casey Fincher. In June we have Maria Ladino and her fiancé Emmanuel Sturchler. Please join me in welcoming them to the club. Good Sailing! Dave Brandon

The Odyssey or at least, An Odyssey by Member Wayne Upchurch I guess this story starts back in 1985, on board a 16 Dolphin day-sailer. I was given one perfect instruction by my friend and mentor Brock Short If you think you are going to flip, just drop the mainsheet and let go of the tiller! My best friend and I practiced that move a couple hundred times that day. By the end of the weekend we were not only much better at handling the boat, but I had fallen thoroughly in love with sailing. Shortly after, I placed membership at Harbor Island Yacht Club. It is now 2014, 29 years later and it has been many years since I have owned a functional sailboat. Life just didn t seem to allow that luxury. Until a few weeks ago, my wife Kristi and I were having a debate and she made the mistake of saying that we could get a boat!! My head buzzed and immediately I set out to find one. Not just any boat, the boat I had wanted 20 years ago. She was the one who actually found it, in a secluded little marina north of Chattanooga - Sale Creek Marina, on Lake Chickamauga. We set off to look at her not knowing that this would be the beginning of an adventure to be remembered forever... Eric Almlie (Harbor Master) was our first contact there. He worked with us tirelessly throughout the purchase process and even beyond the sale. For his helpful generosity, we will be forever thankful! After the purchase we were left with task of getting the boat to Old Hickory Lake. It would be expensive to move by trailer and the backlog would make it a long wait to even get it there. To make a long story short, I decided that I should move it by water. The plan was 2 Rivers, 4 States, 8 Locks, 664 Miles, all in 9 Days!!! I am not a stranger to river travel, but this was an untested boat sitting a bit neglected. However, the stars lined up just right and I had no choice but to grab the bull by the horns and leave post-haste! Within a week of purchase, I had tested all the boat systems that time would permit, gathered supplies and made the best travel plan possible with such short notice. My son (Dylan) and I, set out of Sale Creek at 5:15 a.m. on Friday June 20 th for our grand adventure, uncertain if we would make it all the whole way. The 1 st day was fantastic, almost 100 miles, and both the Chickamauga and Nickajack Dams were behind us. Unfortunately, we started to see engine difficulties that would plague us til the end. Day 2 was even more problematic. We stayed at Ditto Landing (Huntsville, AL) that evening and made repairs. By the third day, fuel issues were so bad that we had to do something more extreme and I was starting to worry that I had made a HUGE mistake. That s when we met the good folks at Lucy s Branch Marina on Wheeler Lake. They were hit hard at the end of April by a tornado, and the damage was still very evident all around. In spite of having their hands full - Mike, Brandon, and the Ladies took the time to remove the bad fuel from our tank and start us out fresh for the remaining 6 days. They were definitely a Godsend!!! With the engine running great again we ran downstream until dark and made anchor in a secluded harbor above Wheeler Dam and waited for the morning to go through the locks. Day 4 went well, outside of a 4 hour delay getting through the locks, and that night we stayed on the Tombigbee at The Grand Harbor Marina. We ate at The Rib Cage restaurant close to Tishomingo MS that night and got to meet some good people. The next morning we went through our last lock on the TN River and started our leg up Kentucky Lake. We felt great! We had raised 2 R.R. Drawbridges and gone through 6 locks to get this far on day 5. The motor was running great and all seemed well and on the 6 th day our fuel issues started again. Mike had told me that all of the crud in the tank wouldn t all come out; I had just hoped we would persevere anyway! I changed the filters and fueled up again at Ken Lake Marina and we pushed on to Lighthouse Landing in Grand Rivers, KY. Our problems seemed to be at bay and we enjoyed a good meal at Patti s Restaurant. Dylan was very pleased to be spared from my cooking! And it re-energized us to plan out our final push, upriver this time The 7 th day we passed through the canal to Barkley Lake. After sleeping in and stopping to have lunch at the Barkley Lodge we felt we had made great time for the day and anchored behind Dover Island. On day 8 our troubles resurfaced and it was time to clean filters, bleed the system of air, and clean up the diesel fuel.again!! Apparently, the strain on the bleed screw was more than it could bear because soon it would spray diesel everywhere. We were unaware however, and proceeded with our big plans to visit Clarksville at their municipal dock. This is where we discovered oh, so many startle-ments on shore for example Kelly s Big Burger

great folks, great food, great price and they gave us fresh bananas, how bizarre! We also traveled 3 miles and checked 4 stores looking for paper towels, all the while carrying our bananas, and ended up buying the last few rolls at a home improvement store?!! no paper towels in Clarksville, someone could capitalize on the paper towel market up there! After we met with a friend for a visit, we soon set out to get under the R.R. Bridge that was under construction (even less clearance for the mast). We squeezed under with inches and celebrated loudly as we passed by the relatively new Clarksville Marina. Several miles further upstream was where the bottom fell out! There was fuel everywhere! A quick rig and we turned back to the marina. I reached the harbor master Ric Cheney on the VHF and he talked us in, tied us to the dock, and sent us to the parts store in his own personal truck! There are some great people out there and that day we met one. It was late when we were back in operation, so we stayed there with our new friends Ricky, Stephanie, and Phillip. We ordered Pizza Hut, had a few libations and ate out on the docks. Back in business on the 9 th day, Ashland City was on the slate. A quick stop in to get lunch that was the plan. But, walking in to the city was much further than we thought. But, fate smiled on us and we met the local district attorney (Ray Crouch) who was putting out a sign for an upcoming election. He offered us a ride a very nice guy with twin 3 year olds. Once underway again - and only a few miles from Rock Harbor Marina - fuel troubles started again. With no more replacement filters, I had to limp her into the marina where I could do a more thorough repair. Day 10 The final leg Less than 50 miles to go and 1 last lock to finally be back home. The engine started strong and we ran well all the way through the locks and then it happened!!! We died at Drakes Creek, 4 short miles from home! I knew that we could sail her in if we had to (shame on me for not doing just that) but, I was tired and just wanted to get back quickly. So, we dropped anchor and I went down to drain the filter yet again! This time it was no use, the filter had to be changed and I had no more spares. I returned topside to find that the anchor had slipped and we were sitting firmly on my new shoal draft keel. I missed my opportunity to sail in! Now I had to wait for someone to SAVE ME! The Coast Guard tried, but all they really did was call me every fifteen minutes, for two hours, to see if I had gotten myself some help.after 660 miles, falling short by 4 miles was unbearable. I know there will come a day that I will look back and laugh, but it was not that day! Now through the help and kindness of The Great Bruce Campbell, we were able to be towed in those last 4 miles and I will be eternally grateful to him! My wife and daughter were also there to coordinate our rescue and to help unload all of our supplies and then with Bruce s assistance, a second time, along with Anthony Passafiume we were able to secure our new Hunter 29.5 to her new mooring. A very deep heartfelt Thank You goes out to all those in our journey who offered assistance, company, and joy to our journey. There are some fantastic people on the river!!! Nevertheless, it s great to be home! My family and I look forward to seeing you all at the club and elsewhere. One final note you may have noticed the name The Boat on the transom. I have already begun to strike her name; it was The Boat Two, which is at least the 3 rd name for this vessel. Since I have no way of knowing the original name or if proper traditions were observed in the name changing, I plan to beseach Poseidon and change the name properly. Hopefully our trials and tribulations on the river were enough to appease him and the Four Winds. :) Beware seniors. An elderly woman stopped at the local mall and when she arrived at the entrance, she realized she s left her keys in her car. My husband will be upset that I ve forgotten and left my keys in the ignition in a parking garage, she said to herself. Fast as she could, she made her way to her parking spot only to find her car had vanished. Stolen, she told the police in a panicked phone call. Relax, call your husband, and everything will turn out OK, they reassured her. The next call was to hubby. No dear, your car wasn t stolen; remember, I dropped you off and went to get gas. I ll swing back and pick you up as soon as I convince this police officer that I didn t steal your car. Don t forget where you anchored your boat.

Sea Scout News April was packed full of activities. In last month s article I talked about our Scout s part in the first OL Schultz Hospice Cruiser regatta. Two weeks later was the OL Schultz Hospice Open regatta. And again our Scouts did the presentation of the burgee s ceremony patterned after the tolling of the boats naval ceremony. To say that I m proud of the job these youth are doing is an understatement. After the ceremony and skipper s meeting was over, two of our youth Sarah and Kevin got to help Bruce Richards with the running of the regatta. For both, this was their first experience with being on race committee. And both really enjoyed the experience and learned a lot. Bruce really is a wonderful teacher. The next weekend we moved our attention to the Pfeffer boat basin at Boxwell Boy Scout camp. There we would be involved in the second annual Pfeffer Sea Scout regatta. This is a regional Sea Scout regatta. Thus we had teams driving as much as six hours to this event. There were eight teams and eight boats. Four North American 14 s and Four Capri 14.2 s. After each race the teams swapped boats so no team would have an advantage due to having a better boat. And we held eight races. Thus each team got to use each boat one time. The skill levels of the teams ranged from Very Experienced to Will they every get around the course. The majority of the teams having skill levels somewhere in between. We had two wonderful days of racing mostly in light winds. But we did have a few times the wind was hard enough to flip a few boats. One of the boats had a camera on board and Saturday evening we got to review one of the teams flipping. It was fun watching the reaction of the youth as the boat started going over. Locally over the last several months there has been a bit of a competition between two Sea Scouts. One being Sarah in Ship 851 out of HIYC. The other being Mark in Ship 43 based in Smyrna. And it all came down to who would beat the other in the Pfeffer regatta. Being first overall did not matter. Only beating the other was of concern. We enjoyed watching these two duke it out on the race course. Sometimes Mark was in the lead and sometimes it was Sarah. Then after the last race the person keeping score noted to me that we had a tie between these two. So we started setting up to do a match race to even it out. Only while setting this up our PRO took another look at the numbers. Turns out that Mark had been disqualified from one of the races due to not doing his 720 after a port/starboard situation with Sarah. Thus Sarah now has bragging rights over Mark. In September we are scheduled to go to Atlanta for a regional Sea Scout regatta being held there. And I believe both Mark and Sarah both plan on attending. This could be interesting to follow. It would also be appreciated if owners cleaned up after their pets. Not all people are sailors, and many cannot understand our passion for getting excited with a 7 knot boat speed. Likewise, not all people are dog lovers; many are fearful, some with unpleasant experiences in their past. There is a reason for the Rules of Racing that we all embrace. Be nice if Members who ignored the Rules of HIYC would rethink their behavior and become sensitive to other Members wishes.

Bye Bye Plastic Dock. For nearly a year, Dock Admiral Paul Latour has worked tirelessly to get the Plastic Dock replaced with something safer and more user friendly. Contacting over 30 people on the wait list, working out size and design requirements, getting approval from the Corps and the HIYC Board, securing financing from slip tenants (with Marc Fortune s assistance), identifying and negotiating with the contractors, overseeing the construction and installation, getting the electrical and water service designed (by Marcelo Perez and Greg Theriot) actually finishing some of the punch list work himself - all while keeping Dana a smiling home front partner A BIG THANK YOU to Paul from the new C Dock tenant investors. And from the entire Club; C Dock sets a new standard that HIYC will be proud of for years to come. Hello New C Dock...

Dogwatch A dogwatch at sea is the period between 4 and 6 p.m, the first dogwatch, or the period between 6 and 8 p.m., the second dog watch. The watches aboard ships are: Noon to 4:00 p.m. Afternoon watch 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. First dogwatch 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Second dogwatch 8:00 p.m. to midnight 1st night watch Midnight to 4:00 a.m. Middle watch or mid watch 4:00 to 8:00 a.m. Morning watch 8:00 a.m. to noon Forenoon watch The dogwatches are only two hours each so the same Sailors aren't always on duty at the same time each afternoon. Some experts say dogwatch is a corruption of dodge watch and others associate dogwatch with the fitful sleep of Sailors called dog sleep, because it is a stressful watch. But no Careful skipper according to Reese Paulley, A crew has so many pathological pathways of retaliation, that the dangerous game of imperiously shouted orders is never worth the candle. Tidal Wave a cocktail for the cockpit. Recommended when on the ball or in a slip 1 part each: gin, light rum, vodka, peach schnapps 4 parts each; orange juice, pineapple juice, 1 dash grenadine syrup Food for thought from Away All Boats by John N. Cole: Becoming a boat person, even on the most basic level, is becoming a different sort of individual who leads a different sort of life. It s a state of being comparable to the difference between being married and being single, or being a parent and being a child. At the very least, it s a life of concern. In most cases concern comes from caring, caring becomes love, and love, at last, becomes an obsession. For boats, as every boat person has discovered, are quite unlike other possessions. They require more giving, Sometimes more than anyone has to give, which is why there are always so many boats for sale.
