L. s civilian career was as an engineer, leading him to design among other things, the infamous laundry basket spinnaker chute for his boat Respite.
3 The first day of spring has passed and hopefully Mother Nature gets the hint and we can look forward to better sailing weather. March was a busy month and much was accomplished. The March Winds Regatta had fourteen boats and was a success even though someone stole the windward mark. The sailing seminar was well attended with lots of folks, many from other clubs. The Cully Cobb 50K upheld its tradition and had to be rescheduled. By the time you read this it will have been completed on the 29th, clean-up day will have happened and the quarterly meeting will be over. April promises to continue the trend with the O L Shultz Alive Hospice Regattas on the weekends of the 12 th and 26 th. Information about that can be found in this Anchorline and I urge you to sign up online for the events, if you haven t already. I m happy to announce that Greg Theriot had the winning bid to pave the north lot and work has begun on that. The plan is to have it completed, weather permitting, before the first Hospice Regatta. The boats are being moved from the lot and parking there will not be available during the process. I need to remind you that car parking is not allowed on the causeway, but we have arranged to park on the other side of it in front of the boat houses. There is also room for a few cars in the cul-de-sac on top of the hill behind the club house. In addition, we had a great response to The Plan Phase Five and will have funds available to cover the cost of paving the entire lot, instead of doing it piece meal. The benefits of this project will far out way the inconveniences of a few weeks, so please bear with us. The replacement of C-Dock is fully funded with twenty-four investors and the order has been placed. We have set a schedule for this to be completed before Sail Camp starts on June 2 nd. That means there will probably be a last minute rush to get it done in May. The Board meeting this month covered almost everything imaginable. The Vanguard Fleet and the Vanderbilt Sailing Club were represented with requests to improve their programs. In addition to items already mentioned, the budget and certificates were approved along with several housekeeping items. This month s new member is a young man who grew up at HIYC, bought the old family boat, Ninja, and joined the club. Please welcome Lucas Hofmeister as our newest member. Good Sailing! Dave Brandon

5 Wind by Water G. Rat If wind seems primary, it only makes sense. Wind is, after all, quite literally the first thing there was. In the beginning, whether in Genesis or before the Big bang, there was nothing. That s from Scott Huler s, Defining the Wind, This is a must-read book for every sailor. It explains how Sir Francis Beaufort who said Everyone has a hobby or his insanity developed a common language on wind, its velocity and force. Remember, the anemometers used in the late 1700 s, when Sir Francis was developing his Scale were fundamentally the same swinging plate contraptions invented in the 15 th century. An equally wonderful read is Heaven s Breath by Lyall Watson published in He also looks at the beginning and opens the book with this sentence: It all began with the big bang. Of more interest to you mortals is his observation To live, even for a few off-duty hours, at the pleasure of the wind, is to recapture the thrill of being part of something larger. That something larger he calls Gaia, the Greek Earth goddess, or as we call it Mother Earth. Finally, for you lovers of picture books The Rising of the Wind Adventures along the Beaufort Scale is a beautifully illustrated children s book by Jacques Yvart that begins with a poem: Listen to the song of the wind, The song of the weather. I have become its breath; I am a gale. Listen to the song of the sky, The song of the thunder. I have become the storm; I am a cloud. Listen to the song of the water, The song the ocean sings. I have become the foam; I am a wave. Listen to the song of the wind, The song of the weather. I have become its breath; I sing the wind s story. From de-fin-ing the wind/de- fin-ing the wind/ger 1. the Beaufort Scale, and how a 19th-century admiral turned science into poetry
6 Sea Scout News Sea Scout News Will this winter ever end??? It seems like every time the scouts schedule to get together and work on boats etc it turns off cold and wet. And we have a very busy spring schedule coming up on us for which we need boats that are operational. First on the agenda is the annual Venturing Rendezvous held at Boxwell Boy Scout Camp some 14 miles up river from HIYC. This will be our fourth time to take part in this adventure. And every time we go a bunch of youth and leaders get to go on their first sail. And so far we ve been blessed with good winds for these first sails. Thus we see this as an important part of our outreach. This year the Scouts hope to take Triad, our San Juan 23 and Pearson 26. Additionally there is discussion concerning taking both of our Oday 17 s too. To make this happen our youth will be working on the boats getting them ready to go. And they might even learn something new during this process. All the boats will need some mechanical work. New halyards will be run on the Pearson 26, fueling and a lot of cleaning will be involved too. Menu s are needed along with shopping for the food. Scheduling of not only who is responsible for different tasks. But also for who is taking persons sailing and when to do things during the event. There will be a lot of other activities going on at the rendezvous and everyone will want to get to try things like shooting a black power rifle, jumping off a 90 foot repelling tower and sliding on a giant zip line. I guess that I should mention that while everyone else will be sleeping on the ground in tents our Sea Scouts will be sleeping in the boats. And the trips up and back give us the opportunity to do some work on navigation. Oh Yeah! It s fun too!!! I ll end with something that happened a while back at a meeting I was attending. A gentleman walked up to me, introduced himself and asked if I remembered him. I don t remember his name but we ll call him Charlie. Turns out 15 years earlier Charlie along with his son attended a sail day being put on by our Sea Scouts for their Boy Scout Troop. For Charlie and his son this was their first time to ever step on a boat. Any boat. And we had been blessed with good weather including winds of around This was a life changing experience for them. Soon afterwards Charlie moved to the East coast for a new job. While there he found the local sailing club and started racing. The family purchased a small boat upon which they learned more and more about our sport. A couple of years later they purchased a larger boat and outfitted it for true cruising. They had sailed around the world on a multiple years adventure. Yes it s the kind of story we read about. And they had done it. And it all started with a sail on Old Hickory lake with our Sea Scouts. WOW!!! Andy & Cathy Griswold

8 MUD ON MY MASTHEAD REFLECTIONS ON THE FROSTBITE SERIES 2014 The coolest thing about the Rob Schmid Memorial Frostbite Series for Lasers this winter was not the water (though we launched through thin ice one Sunday), nor the air (we had great breeze every day), nor the après race fare in the kitchen (though that was delicious); it was the fact that most of those who sailed were young* (for the first time since I was young), a wonderful sign of HIYC s youthful regeneration! 25 sailors raced 33 times over the course of two months of Sundays, spending one foul afternoon by the fireplace watching Steve Cockerill s training video, The Boat Whisperer, playing with model boats to illustrate mark rounding scenarios and rules questions and recounting stories of past and planned adventures on the water. There were some particularly memorable moments: I looked over my shoulder once to see Mandy tack below William and Becca for the finish line, so for a while they were bow-to-bow on the same rung of the ladder but slowly Mandy s leebow spat William out the back and in a puff Becca powered over Mandy establishing the order for a series in which Becca sailed stronger and smarter with every passing weekend to finish second overall. (But William won the next race!) Lucas won the last race of the series and my surrogate son Duane beat me, sailing Manutaki, the boat that my father gave me when I finished high school. Nine different sailors won races and several brave souls raced Lasers for the first time. I love the learning that takes place on the water during these races, about positioning, course management, risk taking (and risk reduction), timing and execution. At the weather mark of the race in which I finished fifth I had a four boat length lead but bore off sharply (using too much ruuuu-der as Cockerill derides that terrible turning technique) lost my momentum, jibed under a wall of starboard tackers approaching the mark, lost my breeze and watched them all roll over me after they rounded. I then resolved to make smooth mark roundings a priority for the rest of the series, a mission that did not go unnoticed. As we were sailing in from the last race Joey complimented me on one that gained me three places, and as I turned to listen a gust hit: SECONd CHILdHOOd death rolled, its mast stuck in the mud, its skipper dunked! Thanks to Peter, Mandy, William for running races and to William and Ania for the photographs. And to Joey for the banana pudding!!! Smooth sailing, Bruce Richards, Laser 18555, SECONd CHILdHOOd *young=agile, flexible and fearless, eg David Young

THE SITE, RACING AREA AND COURSE Harbor Island Yacht Club will be the site of all shore-side activities. The racing area is between mile Cumberland River and mile 227 on Old Hickory Lake. The course will be further described in the Sailing Instructions. The "Upper Course" is approximately one mile northeast of the harbor entrance, below Lindsley's Light. The "Lower Course" is just west of the harbor entrance, between the mouths of Shute's Branch and Drake's Creek. The Harbor Course is inside the harbor, north of HIYC. The Upper and Lower Courses, set on Old Hickory Lake, may intersect the navigational channel. Commercial traffic (barges) and deep-draft craft in the channel have right-of-way over sailboats and must be treated with utmost respect. When a boat sailing under these rules meets a vessel that is not, the rules of Part 2 (When Boats Meet) are replaced by the Inland Navigation Rules. Any boat impeding the passage of a right-of-way vessel is subject to protest by the race committee or the protest committee. ALTERNATE PENALTY - A boat that may have infringed a rule of Part 2 while racing under spinnaker may exonerate herself by dousing her spinnaker (bringing the head of the spinnaker to a point below the level of the gooseneck), making a 360 degree turn including a tack and a gybe, and then resetting her spinnaker. This changes RRS SCORING Each boat's total score will be the sum of her scores for all races, excluding her worst score if six or more races are completed. This changes rule A2. A boat that did not finish within the required time after the first boat in her class finished and that was still racing when the time limit expired, will be scored points for the finishing place equal to one more that the number of boats in the class that finished the race. The scoring abbreviation for such boats will be TLX (did not finish due to time limit expiring). This changes RRS A4.2 and A11. A boat that did not start (DNC, DNS and OCS), did not finish (DNF) for any reason other than (TLX), or retires after finishing (RAF) will be scored points for the finishing place equal to one more than the number of boats in the class that entered the regatta. A boat that was disqualified (BFD, DSQ, DNE and DGM) will be scored points for the finishing place equal to two more than the number of boats in the class that entered the regatta. This changes RRS A4.2. All other boats will be scored in accordance with RRS A4.1 and A4.2. If a tie still remains after applying the series tie breaking procedure of A8.1, the procedure outlined in RRS A8.1 will be repeated using all races, including those previously excluded. If a tie still remains, the tie will be broken in accordance with A8.2. This changes RRS A8.2. A boat starting later than 5 minutes after her starting signal will be scored as DNS. This changes RRS A4.1. PRIZES - Trophies will be awarded for all classes to the top three (3) finishers. WAIVER - Competitors in this event are participating entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. Competitors agree that the race organizers (organizing authority, race committee, protest committee, host club, sponsors, or any other organization or official) will not be responsible for damage to any boat or other property or the injury to any competitor, including death, sustained as a result of participation in this event. As an inducement to the race organizers to produce the regatta, each competitor agrees that by participating in this event each competitor is deemed to have waived all claims against and released the race organizers from any and all liability associated with such competitor s participation in this event to the fullest extent permitted by law and is deemed to have warranted that he has obtained this same release of the race organizers by each crew member. 11 New member Ahoy old friends and new, I grew up sailing at HIYC and was always involved with sail camp and summers at the lake. I have done lots of one design racing in the past but have been sailing less since being in graduate school. I am currently working on my PhD in Biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt. I m really excited to have a new boat and I m looking forward to lots of good times at HIYC! Lucas Kent Martin awards Rick Fielder the well deserved Winter Series Trophy More little known facts about our Club by Water G. Rat Pam Vague was the Bible Club President of her High School. No wonder Steve needs her. I have it on good authority that Vice Commodore Osborne is a big fan of sappy romance movies. His wife Kathy, on the other hand, prefers mindless body count flicks no doubt still relieving her tensions from past HIYC Board Meetings. While delivering Jim Waller s new boat from Kentucky Lake to HIYC, the Tartan 28 with No Name ran aground three times while trying to find an anchorage on the Cumberland River near the Kentucky Tennessee border. Waller contends Dan Lindstrom was driving, Dan says it was Jim Doran. However they all agreed that the barge that went aground nearby should really have known better.
