It seems just a few weeks ago we were planning out our year for the MRSA activities. June is here, and we already have several events under our belt.

In fact, it flies. The older I get, the faster it travels. It seems just a few weeks ago we were planning out our year for the MRSA activities. June is here, and we already have several events under our belt. Racing is into series 2, race 3, and the June social/picnic activities begin, not to mention the June cruising schedule. Junior Training will begin in just a few weeks. The greatest news is the addition to our family--our first granddaughter. She is a welcomed addition to our four grandsons. Just think, five new members for the junior training program in a few years. MRSA has coordinated several events with other organizations such as the Eastport Yacht Club, the Beneteau Club, the Miles River Yacht Club, the Baltimore City Yacht Association, the Potapskut Sailing Association, the Yacht Club of Cape Saint Claire and the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron. This year, we have invited the Belvedere Yacht Club cruising members to join us at the August MRSA Picnic to be held at the Milbur park area. MRSA has many activities, something for everyone of all ages. Take a quick look at the Red Book and check out our schedules of activities--just so you don't miss anything. 2 Ask not what MRSA can do for you, ask what you can do for your MRSA Hi everyone. Just like the marines, who are looking for a few good men and women, MRSA needs a few more volunteers to lead some of the cruises planned for this season. These cruises are: Labor Day Cruise, September 5-7. This is a new cruise, tentatively planned for the Choptank, with a visit to St. Michaels through the "back door" (San Domingo Creek). Not set in stone, so new ideas, along with a cruise leader :-), would be welcome. Constellation Cup, October This is also new to the MRSA calendar. The Constellation Cup is an annual fun race to benefit the historic ships in the Inner Harbor. The course starts near Fort McHenry, goes southeast through the Key Bridge, rounds Fort Carroll, goes back up past Fort McHenry, and finishes right by Constellation in the Inner Harbor. The day ends with a fantastic catered party on the Constellation dock. There is a division for the diehard racers, but most boats participate in the full-keel or fin-keel divisions with a pursuit start (the boats start according to PHRF ratings, so, whoever finishes first is first and no nail-biting crowded starting line). Ratings are given if you don't have one. I have sailed in four of these events and had a blast each time--all for a good cause. Please consider volunteering to lead one of these cruises; if you need more information, please feel free to contact me. Norm Poulsen Fleet Captain Cruising A Day with the Blue Angels We know that there were a number of sailors from MRSA on the water on Tuesday, May 19th, to see the Blue Angels put on their astonishing aerial acrobatics. Word has it that the Bonham's had an excellent view of the action aboard Frequent Flyer with members Barbara and Randy Harbin aboard. Kathy Polk was a guest aboard a friend s pontoon boat out of Whitehall Marina. Rich Hughes sailed out of the South River with friends. Ravenous left the Magothy at noon with a crew of six, motoring under the bridge at about two o clock with cameras ready to capture all the fabulous sights for award winning photographs. No one was disappointed as the clouds cleared and the Blue Angels put on a fabulous show for all who watched. Fat Albert ended the show, and the happy sailors headed home with great memories and photographs to share from a good day on the water. 2

2015 Memorial Day Cruise It was good friends, good food, and good weather. Saturday brought good friends which aided us with a tow from Shaw Bay to Granary Creek.

Mike and Loura Bonham on Frequent Flyer came along just at the right time as Fantastic experienced engine problems. They towed us to the mouth of Grannery Creek where we dropped the hook and served as the anchor boat for the raft. As we anchored outside Grannery Creek and rafted with Frequent Flyer, (Mike and Loura Bonham) and April Fool (Dick and Dretta Peterson), along came old friends Jeff and Kate Fones with Al and Holly Picardi. Jeff and Kate were proud to show off their new to them Cape Dory Lark. Lark became the host boat for the cocktail hour. We were joined by Ed and Peggy Poe with Kathy Polk from Ravenous. Arriving later Saturday afternoon were Betelgeaux with Jon and Mike Mullarky and Eighth Deadly Sin with John, Ruth, Talia, and Natasha Baumert as crew. All were treated to a beautiful night for sleeping on the boat. Sunday arrivals included the McNairs, Wes, Sheryl, and Jay on Merlin along with Kent and Nancy Shaffer on Royal Salute. Dick and Marianne Kammann opted to travel by land yacht. Sunday by land brought a fuel filter for Fantastic s auxiliary with George and Carolyn Stamps and Beth Vanfossen and Lewis Neisner. Also traveling by land yacht were Rob and Kara Mullarky, and Bob Krapfel and Gabriella Bella. Rob worked some magic on our engine and got it running. The Sunday activities included the usual games along with a maritime version of Jeopardy. Ravenous shined as winner of the silly boat inspection. Loura Bonham tried to say a recipe for French toast was a French cookbook, close but no points! We had twelve, four-person teams participate in the skill games. The Jeopardy game pitted the clubs against each other. The competition for Jeopardy was very stiff but team MRSA won with great maritime knowledge by the entire team. The evening closed with a delicious chicken dinner, always a favorite. The awards presentation sent home several bottles of wine with MRSA teams. Sunday night was again beautiful night on the water. Monday brought clear blue skies and a steady breeze. Fantastic used all of the breeze to sail all the way to her slip. The engine quit again at Shaw Bay, maybe we won t go back there for a while! They are FINALLY here so join fellow MRSA members, children, grandchildren and guests for a Dog Day Afternoon on June 27th in Eagle Cove, aka Biddle Bay, the Magothy River. Moxie will be laden with precious booty, "the dogs", and Dennise and Rod will drop anchor by 2 p.m. Please bring an appetizer to share, and the best one will win a bottle of RUM! Don t forget your toys and swim fins if you are going to play in the water, and if you have children or grandchildren, make sure they are part of your crew! Dog Days of Summer Raft-Up By Debbie Lund Celebrate the July 4th weekend in the Chester River. On Friday, July 3 rd, join Min Van IV in Grays Inn Creek. Happy Hour will start at 1700 hours or 5 p.m. Rock Hall Fireworks should be visible from the Creek. On Saturday, July 4 th, we will have group breakfast before heading over to Reed Creek. Please bring a breakfast item to share. MRSA is invited to the Eaton Farm for a party. Around 3 p.m., we will dinghy to the farm for the party. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. 5 Summer Solstice Cruise June 20 and 21, Frequent Flyer will be leading the cruise to the West River. We will be anchored off of Pirate's Cove Marina. Slips there are first come first served and very reasonably priced. Happy hour will convene at 5 p.m. on Frequent Flyer unless otherwise advised. Those who wish to dine on shore have three restaurants to choose from--big Mary's, Pirate's Cove Restaurant and Thursday's Restaurant. No reservations have been made. In years past, Back Creek Yacht Club provided entertainment for the entire anchorage with several bands playing on a large boat to celebrate the Summer Solstice. We're hoping they do this again this year. Mike & Loura Bonham, Frequent Flyer Cruise Leaders Hi everyone, I would like to briefly remind everyone of the responsibilities of our cruise leaders. First, be sure to write a description of the cruise you are leading to be put in the edition of the Old Man that precedes the cruise. The "Old Man" usually comes out early in the second week of each month, so please send this description to Mike Bonham around the first of the month. I will try to send an out to remind each leader to do this, but don't count on me! Second, while on the cruise, try to get the names of everyone who is attending, whether they came by boat or by land, and if it is a multi-day cruise, who was there for the different days. Please send this information to me after the cruise. Third, following the cruise, please write another article to send to Mike that describes what happened on the cruise (particularly any fun or humorous events) and who attended the cruise. 6 Racing Corner CRUISING CLASS This year, we are considering having a Cruising Class Start for the third and fourth series during the summer if there is enough interest. This would be a non-scored event other than actual elapsed time on the course, and PHRF Ratings would not be required to participate. Sailors will receive an award if six out of the eight races are completed. More details to follow please contact the Race Committee if you are interested. race_committee@magothysailing.com High Stakes, High Points Change is in the air around the Chesapeake Bay YRA (CBYRA), and to demonstrate, a group of 75 sailors gathered the weekend of March 14 to have a true party--an overnight shindig at Camp Wright on the Eastern Shore with a bonfire, beverages and good food and, of course, trophies. Sailors gathered to celebrate the 2014 High Point Awards given out by the CBYRA to sailors who have sailed in a minimum number of sanctioned events. This year, there were 15 qualifying races, so the group gathered to celebrate constituted some of the bay's most seasoned and successful crews. The big winner of the night was Incommunicado, the Omega 36, owned by Ed Tracey and Tim Polk, who took home the Lady Anne Arundel, LaBrot and Decker trophies for Highest Scoring Skipper from Anne Arundel County, Best Unadjusted Performance in the Handicap Class and Best Performance in PHRF Region 2, respectively. The Healy Trophy for best unadjusted score in the Cruising One Design class was given to Fredrik Salvesen and Cedric Lewis onboard the J/105 Mirage. Congratulations to all who qualified, and here's to a great 2015 season of racing on the bay. 6
