Commodore s Comments Having a Ball & Need a Fun Job? By Jon Mullarky, Commodore Well the MRSA 2011 activities started off with some 56 members and guests dining and dancing the night away at the Commodore s Ball on Saturday January 22. By all indications everybody had a great time. More activities are on the way. February brings two very important meetings, the Cruise Planning Meeting on February 12 and the Race Planning Meeting on February 16. Details for both meetings are found later in this addition of the Old Man. The Magothy River Sailing Association is an all-volunteer outfit. The only way our racing, cruising, junior training, or social programs get put on is by the work of dedicated members, and, frankly, we need more help! Two very important Board positions remain unfilled, Vice Commodore and Race Committee Chair. The Vice Commodore, in addition to backing up the Commodore, is responsible for oversight of the Association s social, education and entertainment activities. The Race Committee Chair has a big and important job. This chairman and committee are responsible for establishing the race schedule, arranging for individual race committees, committee boats and crash boats, generating race circulars and processing entries and establishing the race results. Without these folks we simply would not have a racing program. At the cruise planning meeting we will not only set the dates and destinations for our 2011 Cruises, we will also solicit volunteers to function as the Cruise Captain for each event. The HELP WANTED sign is out at MRSA. Jobs are available! If you are interested in the Vice Commodore s position contact me. Racers, let Joe Berchielli that you would like to do more than just be rail meat on Wednesday night and show up at the race-planning meeting. The creeks may be frozen and the boats winterized but it's time to put on your party hats and to get organized for another great sailing season. We have put together a busy schedule to keep you busy all summer and now we want to share it with you and to enlist your help in making it a successful sailing season This is a good opportunity for new members or would be members to find out what the MRSA cruise season looks like, and to make plans to join the fun. The Redbook lists all our Club racing and cruising events for the year. It also contains information about our junior sailing program. And of course, the Redbook has EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about MRSA people, places, races, and boats. As a very special treat, MRSA Member, Al Picardi, author of Jack s Favorite (see write-up later in this issue) will speak about his book and the fascinating history and lore about the Chesapeake that he uncovered while writing his book. Please RSVP by March 11 th to Toni Hughes at or fantastc@comcast.net. Tall-Tales of Past Cruises and Events Commodore s Ball a Success No Snow! By Jon Mullarky, Commodore From our vantage point at the Gibson Island Club, the Moon over the Bay was spectacular. It might have been a little cold outside, but no snow! Inside the Club, fifty-six MRSA members and guests socialized, dinned on Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Saltimbocca, and Pan Seared Alaskan Halibut topped off with an assortment of dessert pastries. MC Joe Jackins got the program going by introducing guests and Past Commodores in attendance. Outgoing Commodore Wes McNair was welcomed into the ranks of the Past Commodores and presented with a memento recognizing his service as the MRSA Commodore in John and Debbie Lund took home the Cruising Award again this year; but they had stiff competition from Ed and Peggy Poe, the second place winners. Race award winners were also recognized though the racing awards had already been given out at the GIYS Boathouse in warmer weather. Page 3

After the awards and recognitions the dancing began to music provided by DJ Adam Fabiano. A good time was had by all! Special Membership Notices and Announcements Welcome new members AND prospective members! The last new member vote of 2010 was taken by the outgoing BOG in November. This experienced BOG wasted no time wondering about protocol or process or quorum. Of course a quorum was required to vote in new members because this BOG knows the ropes. After all, they ARE sailors and sailors know ropes!!! The new members are Christine Shenot and John Nicholson. Welcome aboard to Captain John who sails Fair Curve, a multi-hull Corsair 31 that has raced this year in the Wednesday night races. Christine and John live in Arnold and keep Fair Curve on Dividing Creek. Bet they aren t doing much racing now, but hope we see them in the spring. Classified Advertisements From time to time it has been customary to have classified ads in The Old Man to allow members to make nautical articles (little pun there) available within the membership. Please respond directly to the seller if you are interested in these deals. The Commodore received a letter in December from The Pride. Pride of Baltimore Inc. is asking if you can make a donation to the students of Maritime Industries Academy that are involved in hands-on training for their Maritime studies class. They are asking for Scraps of wood so that students can practice wood fishing (maybe they meant wood finishing? 5 Junior Sailing Program Ages 9-16 Junior Training 2011 Anticipation building Exciting! By Zoe Forsyth, Fleet Captain Junior Training Start Thinking about Summer Sailing for your kids Registrations start in March for Sailing Camp June 20 July 1, 2011 Junior Training Sailing Course. As in the past, we expect the two week MRSA-Grachur Summer Sailing Course to be very popular and to fill up quickly. There has been a waiting list every year. The camp is limited to forty (40) junior sailors, ages 9 through 16, and will run weekdays from Monday, June 20th through Friday, July 1st. If your kids are interested, be prepared to move fast when, on or about March 1st, the Registration forms will be made available in the Juniors section of the MRSA website, As is obvious from the vintage photo here, the Grachur point has been a Mecca for small boat sailors for generations. (Mary and Sid Polk circa ED) The cost is expected to be similar to last year, $260 for MRSA and Grachur Club junior sailors, and $330 for non-club members. The course will follow the US Sailing text "Start Sailing Right." Again this year, parents will be expected to help one day for each camper from their family. MRSA and Grachur Club members will get priority until the Members Priority Registration Date, which will be stated on the Registration form. After this date, applications will be considered from nonmember junior sailors (those whose parents or Page 5

grandparents are not members of MRSA or Grachur.
