Happy St. Patrick s Day! By Debbie Lund, Commodore Welcome Spring! The days are getting longer and hopefully the temperatures are rising. So far it has been a mild winter so I hope we won t pay for that this spring. This is the time to go to the boatyard and sand, paint and wax. For the last several years, the camp has been sold out so don t hesitate to send in the paperwork. MRSA has been very fortunate to be able to hold the junior training program at the Grachur Club. Kathy Dougan is hard at work editing the Red Book. Thank you Kathy for all the work you do behind the scenes. The goal is to have the book finished and distributed at the March brunch. The brunch will be March 18 th at the Woodfire Restaurant in Severna Park. MRSA is a Boat U.S. Cooperating Group. This entitles MRSA members to half price Boat U.S. membership ($15.00). MRSA s number is GA80366S. When you join or renew your membership, put that number on the form. MRSA is always looking for new members. If you have friends that are interested in sailing, please invite them to a party, race or cruise. See you next month on the water! Page 1

Price is just $20.00 per person, payable in cash at the door. The speaker will be Chuck O Malley a veteran Chesapeake sailor who has competed in world class sailing events. He is also the owner of Doyle Chesapeake sail makers on Severn Avenue in Annapolis. Chuck s topic will be Sails and how to sail with Sails. He is developing a special presentation for us, highlighting areas of interest to MRSA Racers, Cruiser, and Junior Sailors. Chuck is a very accomplished sailor. Chuck s Bio: Chuck O'Malley, owner of Doyle Chesapeake, has been a lifelong cruising and racing sailor. Among his racing career highlights are six High Point championships, two Lady Anne Arundel trophy wins and two Labrot Trophy wins (awarded to the one boat among all of the handicapped classes that has the highest cumulative score for the season on the Chesapeake Bay). He has successfully participated on boats ranging from 25 to 73 feet at World Class events like Key West Race Week, Block Island Race Week, New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta, Miami Race Week, and numerous offshore races. Chuck's years of cruising the east coast, growing up on his family's Islander 34 and Tartan 41 have fueled his passion to cater to an ever-growing cruising market. He has actively participated in cruising rallies and has made some nice passages aboard clients' yachts. At Doyle Chesapeake, Chuck has made education the cornerstone of his operating philosophy. In addition to conducting seminars at the Doyle sail loft in Annapolis, Chuck has been a featured speaker at Cruising Rally Association Offshore Seminars, Sail Expo and Sail America seminars. He currently races and cruises his J-30 with his family. To ensure that this is an informative discussion, please forward any questions you would like Chuck to address about sails to vice_commodore or to richard.paden@comcast.net, and Chuck will be pleased to provide suggestions for you. Thursday April 5 th Membership Meeting Safety at Sea, and the ill-fated cruise ship Costa Concordia Submitted by Dick Paden, Vice Commodore We have received confirmation from our invited Feature Speakers, Mr. Bill Gozzard with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Office of Communications Safety Advocacy and a native of Severna Park, MD and Captain Elia Manetta, Advisor to the Italian Maritime Sea Rescue Service. Bill and Elia will provide an interesting discussion and insight about the fate of the Italian Cruise Ship Costa Concordia. They will also highlight preventive actions we should take to avoid disaster while on the water. Elia had first hand, on-site rescue experience with the Costa Concordia and her infamous Captain, Francesco Schettino and observed the efforts of the Italian Maritime Sea Rescue Service. Bill has over 40 years experience with NTSB and will highlight the Role of the Board and recall Page 2

Saturday April 28 th Sock Burning Party Looper Beach Submitted by Dick Paden, Vice Commodore Thanks to the generosity of Eddie Looper, we will have our annual Sock Burning Party on the Looper s waterfront/beach property on Broad Creek, north side of the Magothy. Bring your old socks and look for smoke. SAILABRATION in Baltimore June: Marinas are Filling Up! By Myron Dorf, Cruise Leader One of our planned cruises for this summer is the SAILABRATION in Baltimore. The Tall Ships will be arriving in Baltimore on June 13 and departing on June 19. Among the festivities planned for the event are tours of the Tall Ships and Navy War Ships, an air show, fireworks, and events on land. For more information check the website at starspangled2000.com. The marinas are filling up very quickly and if you wish to attend you must book your space now and secure it with a credit card. Mike Mullarky has done some checking and has found the following: - Lighthouse Point in Canton (and probably Harbor View, since they're the same company): slips available now, but going quickly. They can't commit until reserved with a credit card. $2.50/ft/night, 40' minimum, 3 night minimum, $18/night for electric. Payment in full when reserved. Non-refundable. With 48 hour cancellation notice, funds will be held by the marina and may be used on non-holiday/non-special Event times for up to one year from the reservation date. - Harbor View: Has slips. $3.00/ft/night, 30 minimum, 3 night minimum. - Inner Harbor East: sold out for Friday and Saturday night, but available other nights. 2 night minimum. Rates are by slip size - 30' - $72.00, 40' - $94.50, 50' - $ Electric is $8 for single 30AMP and $16 for twin 30AMP or 50AMP. - Anchorage Marina is full. Group plans are indefinite at this time. You must make your individual arrangements if you wish to stay overnight in Baltimore. Spring like weather on Saturday, February 18 had the almost 30 sailors gathered at the Belvedere Yacht Club ready to make plans for the coming season. After consuming the delicious food and sharing great camaraderie the meeting started and we are pleased to announce that MRSA cruisers have once again, with a minimum of arm twisting, volunteered to make our busy schedule possible. Put the dates on your calendar and join us for some fun weekends. A special thanks to Jim and Verna Wilson for making the Belvedere YC available and to all those who helped with the set up and clean up. It certainly makes the job easier. Racing Corner Magothy Wednesday Night Races start April 18 th Junior Sailing Program Ages 9-16 Junior Training 2012 Sign up March NOW! By Zoe Forsyth, Fleet Captain Junior Training Start Thinking about Summer Sailing for your kids. Registrations start March 1 st - NOW!! Junior Training Sailing Course. As in the past, we expect the two week MRSA-Grachur Summer Sailing Course to be very popular and to fill up quickly. There has been a waiting list every year. The camp is limited to forty (40) junior sailors, ages 9 through 16, and will run weekdays from Monday, June 18th through Friday, June 29th. If your kids are interested, be prepared to move fast when, on or about March 1st, the Registration forms will be made available in the Juniors section of the MRSA website, The cost is the same as last year, $260 for MRSA and Grachur Club junior sailors, and $330 for non-club members. The course will follow the US Sailing text "Start Sailing Right." Again this year, parents will be expected to help one day for each camper from their family. MRSA and Grachur Club members will get priority until the Members Priority Registration Date, April 1. After this date, applications will be considered from nonmember junior sailors (those whose parents or grandparents are not members of MRSA or Page 5

6 Grachur). Grachur and MRSA members must have their applications submitted and received by the Members Priority Registration Date in order to receive their priority status over non-member families. Necessary Forms The 2012 Registration Form, the Release Form, and the Medical Waiver Form should be submitted at the same time and will be available on the MRSA web site as explained above.
