As I drove down North Shore Road a couple of weeks ago, it was fun to see the kids playing little league football. There were two exciting games underway, and cars and minivans filled the parking lot. Of course all the teams were focused and pulling together for the win. The parents and cheerleaders on the sidelines were helping as well, making sure the players got there on time and had the equipment needed and all the support and encouragement possible. But teamwork is a year-round thing, and not just for kids or sports teams. We have had a terrific team leading MRSA this year, making sure that the meetings, picnics and social events came off without a hitch, planning the racing program, implementing our very popular cruising calendar and generally taking the pulse of our organization. For our kids, there were many volunteers working hard to be sure that the Junior Training Program and Junior Summer Racing were successful. And of course, we have had our communications gurus, keeping us in touch with the newsletter, the annual Red Book, and our wonderful website. The members who agreed to be officers of our association have worked enthusiastically to help MRSA this year, as have many others who have helped and encouraged from the sidelines. I thank all of them for their help making this year a success. What a great TEAM! December means the election of a new Board of officers for MRSA, and a new team taking over. I encourage you to give them your support and ask you to pitch in with your help whenever you are asked. Have a Wonderful Holiday and I hope to see you at the Commodore s Ball! Page 1

It is, as someone said, Definitely a delightful December diversion destination. Parade of Lights Saturday, December 13 th By Toni Hughes Commodore s Ball Saturday, January 10 th By Toni Hughes Join MRSA in viewing the Eastport Yacht Club s World Famous Parade of Lights on Saturday, December 13 th. We have a room reserved at the Annapolis Marriot for warmth and refreshment. We will be in room #511. The parade of about 50 boats begins at 6pm - SHARP. And viewing from inside the WARM hotel room Priceless! MRSA is starting 2009 with a party! Come celebrate the New Year with our annual MRSA Commodore s Ball on the evening of January 10, The delightfully formal event will be held this year at a new location, the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis. The hotel is located on Holiday Court off Riva Road. (The hotel used to be the Radisson, and originally the Holiday Inn.) Dinner and award presentations will be followed by dancing to a great DJ. The price will remain the same as last year $60 per person. Invitations will be sent to all members in December. RSVP by January 3 rd to the Vice Commodore. Wear your finest winter holiday finery tux or tails or even a suit (not a bathing suit, Bill); long or short or party dress, but whatever you wear, look terrific as you dance the night away with such notables as Dinah Shore, Chubby Checker, Ray Charles, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, or even The Red Hot Chili Peppers! This cruise was planned to be joint cruise with MRSA and the Chesapeake Bristol Club. The Bristol Club had planned a week cruise that was cancelled due to weather. Saturday brought us rain, fog, and more rain and fog. The response from the marina was you sailors are crazy. Joining us on this adventure were Mullarkys, Jon and Mike on Betelgeux (came the shortest distance); Lunds on Min Van IV; and Kirkendalls on Flying Low. The group was joined by Rob Mullarky, Bob Krapfel and Gabrielle Belli by land. The Bristol group was represented by two boats. The Hughes hosted the cocktail hour trying to keep everyone dry. Kirkendalls enjoyed the Baltimore Orioles until the rain started again. They got several funny looks walking across the harbor in their full foul weather gear. (They were prepared.) The rest of the group made their way to Vaccario s for dessert. Each was fabulous. Sunday morning brought sunshine and a terrific brunch shared by both clubs. The waffle iron was hot and they were delicious. Poe s joined the group dockside by land. With our full stomachs we all headed south and home. Better weather, no wind but also no rain until later in the day. (Photos appeared in last month s Old Man.) As we plan next year s events we will be sure to order better weather for this event. Frostbite Cruise By Loura Bonham If you see either one of the crew of Magic Dragon, check their noses. They were the only boat that risked acquiring frostbite on our last of the season s cruise to Windows on the Bay in Rock Creek on the 1 st of November. We had 24 in attendance at the dinner/lecture. Jon Mullarky acquired our speaker from the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club Association, an organization that represents the boating community on the Bay in legislative matters. Today, the association has 129 member clubs including MRSA. We gathered information about CBYCA and proposed legislation that could impact boating on the Chesapeake Bay. Their representative briefed us on CBYCA and its activities. Page 3

So be sure to renew early. The first five renewals will win a special prize to be awarded by the Commodore at the 2009 Commodore s Ball. Racing Events There were no significant or insignificant racing events held on the Magothy in November or December Oh, By the Way Sailing Legend Crosses the Bar Quoted from BoatU.S. Magazine, November 2008, p.38 It isn t often, if ever, that a yacht designer gets a ticker-tape parade down Broadway in New York. But Olin J. Stephens did in 1931 after the boat he designed, Dorade, crushed the competition in the Trans-Atlantic Race and again in the Fastnet Race. Stephens, of Sparkman & Stephens fame, passed away Sept. 13 at the age of 100. Active in design symposiums and other projects well into his 90s, Stephens designed eight of the nine Page 4

5 winning America s Cup sailboats between 1937 and 1980 and over his remarkable career designed or supervised the design of over 2,000 boats or classes of boats. While he retired in 1978, he published his autobiography, All This And Sailing Too, in 1999 at age 90. It s chock full of Olin s fabulous career highlights and sailing adventures with his brother Rod. Even though he was an MIT dropout, due to illness, Stephens revolutionized the field of Yacht design through his work with the Stevens Institute of Technology using towing tanks. He also had the honor of being member No. 1 in seniority at the New York Yacht Club which held a birthday celebration for Stephens 100 th at their Race Week regatta in July. To read author John Rousmaniere s bio of Stephens, go to Winter Sailing Pursuits By Book Worm Two not-too-bookish ideas to avoid brain malaise during the winter sailing doldrums: The first is for the young and young at heart - with a nod toward manual dexterity: Paper Captain by Juliette Cezzar (Universe Publishing) is a clever compilation of stories about 20 famous ships but not exactly just that. Contained in the book are die-cut paper models ready to detach, assemble, and launch in your favorite bathtub or puddle. A variety of models are included, even the USS Monitor and HMS Victory. Special coated paper guarantees the models will float at least for a little while. The engaging models and stories are guaranteed to keep you and the kids enthusiastically engaged for as long as your skill level desires. The second does not require scissors, glue or dexterity. Oliver s Surprise by Carol Newman Cronin and illustrated by Laurie Ann Cronin (Gemma) has a catchy subtitle: A boy, A Schooner and the Great Hurricane of (Carol Cronin is an accomplished and well-know racer especially as a member of the U.S. Sailing Team and 2004 Olympic Sailor.) The book is an 84-page mini-novel with a young adult mantra suitable for older kids also. The fantasea takes a boy to the schooner Surprise in the 1930s of Rhode Island on the eve of a heavy-duty hurricane. There is modicum of time-travel between now and the 1930s with various common pleasures and pastimes in juxtaposition. Hot chocolate or hot toddies are optional at your side by a warm fire after church and before the Ravens game. Recognize that young fellow second from left (at the tiller)? That s Bill Hoffman, probably in the 1980s. Dottie Hoffman is at left and the others are Loge and Sudds Hill. Once a sailor always a sailor. Page 5
