June 2010 June 2003 President s Report June 2010 The Windrush Catamaran Association of WA is still a very strong, well supported organisation. While we have seen the demise of associations in all other states, the WA association has gone from strength to strength and is in a very sound financial position. Our success can be attributed in part to the large support bass of volunteers. A big thank you to all the 2009/10 Association VOLUNTEERS. People like Viki Thompson, Ruda Edwards, Tim Hodgson, Colin Osborn and John McKechnie, are invaluable to the efforts of our Association. Special recognition must also go to the Association Committee Members who have had a very busy year and who have given their time and energy to make the 2009/10 sailing season such a success. Association secretary, Bob Lowther and Newsletter editors Viki and Rob Thompson have played an important part in the smooth running of events organised during the past year. Thank you also to Treasurer and Registrar, Malcolm Buzza, and Handicapper Martin Hewitt. Wendy Saw and Ben Dei Giudici have taken on the role of Trophy Officers, and Robin Holmes has given us a new look web site. Your efforts have been much appreciated. The National Titles held at Princess Royal Sailing Club was a wonderful success. Everyone appreciated the work that Tim Hodgson and his merry band of helpers put into the race organisation, rescue boats and catering. The camaraderie and sailing competition was excellent. Having three well supported fleets, Cats, Sloops and Super Sloops, was a big bonus and a highlight for this event. The re-emergence of the Dongara Yacht Club and the keen interest in sailing at Carnarvon, Ocean Reef, Safety Bay and Shelly has also contributed the strength of the Windrush Catamaran Association of WA. There is enthusiasm for the next State Titles to be held in Carnarvon at Easter 2011 and there is also support for a Windrush Sailing event to be held at the end of December 2010 at the Cruising Yacht Club in Rockingham. Cruising Yacht Club normally have a regatta between Christmas Day and New Year s Day, and perhaps we will be able to organise sailing there to take the place of a National Championship. There is very little support for a National Championship to be held anywhere in the Eastern States in the near future. Once again we were privileged to be able to hold our State Championships at Jervoise Bay. It is an excellent venue with good camping and sailing conditions. Thank you all for your support for this regatta. Keith Saw. Emily Jean

Page 3 G'Day Benny & Linda. Kim Cramer was here the other day, & we attempted to name the boats & sailors depicted in the painting( next page) How did the photos turn out? If there's a good one would you like to send it to Wavelengths, & here's Kim's & my best guesses on the people & boats, which you can attach. The boats were painted from a photo taken in 1984 or 85 & the scene (trees & shoreline etc) was done from real life in 86 I think. Left to right. At the rear with the red sail, is Harry Moorhead, sailing Mar-re-lee. Next is Paul Slaughter, sailing the ex Kim Stephens boat, Teacher's Pet. On the beach is the second Georgeous, with the best sail ever made. Next is Roadrunner,. It was sailed by George's late brother Sandy. Originally Dont Wanna, Don Wann. Still in the family. Image of Blue was built for Len Glasson, but at the lake was owned by Paddy Thomas. His son Chris sailed The Demon, Don West's old boat. Mystery about the bloke stepping the mast on the white boat. Could it be Brian Norwood with Jaws? Brian & Margaret Winchcombe sailed the next boat along, but I cannot recall it's name. Can anyone out there??? Was it Windlass?? The next boat is either Chookies Chick, Brian Fowlie, or K9, John Fitzhardinge. Kim & Derrin Cramer sailed His 'n' Hers with the multi coloured sail White boat... open to suggestions. The yellow boat is either Caterpillar, Peter Smart, or Spaghetti Bender which was then Jim Plozza's boat. In the distance is a laser, a hobie & a red canoe. Have an idea the Hobie belonged to Jeff Brooks, who is currently master of the Batavia Longboat replica, in Geraldton. No ideas about the laser or the canoe.. Lemon Charged was Mark Cramer's boat The people are a bit harder to identify, but once again, left to right George Barnetson, Sandy Barnetson (partly hidden) Brian Winchcombe?? Who is the bloke with the sail bag?? Derrin Cramer, Kim Cramer, in the red shirt. Mark Cramer, Barbara Thomas, rigging a windsurfer. Lady in red bathers with Sundance windsurfer???? Carol Taylor (Dennis's daughter) getting a tan, Annette Norwood? chatting up a bloke, I've no idea who. The couple in the chairs are Don & Irene Slaughter, & the last two blokes are mysteries. The painting was done by Ailsa Small,. She has paintings all over the world, in many hospitals, through the Sir Claude Hotchin Bequest, & several in Parliament house in Perth. She is George's sister in law. So there's a blast from the past, mainly for the Geraldton/ Dongara boats, but its a reminder of the glory days of Windrush & the lake is still a tremendous place to sail. In fact I recall swapping gelcoat with Wendy B a couple of years earlier at the lake, about 82 or 3. Not sure if I've been forgiven yet or not. Remember that Keith? Cheers, George

P a g e 4 The picture above and accompanying letter, previous page, was sent in by Benny and Linda to Rob and Vikki from George Barnetson...thanks George. Depicting a scene from Lake Indoon in the early 80 s I can say that there has been little change in the last 30 years from what I saw last regatta (sails yes, but beach and bush are just the same) If anyone can help with identification or other information please advise. Don t forget that Lake Indoon Regatta will be on again this year subject to rainfall and if it is half as good as last year then you can be assured of a good weekends sailing and camping. Anyone with similar memorabilia and may wish to share it please forward and I will be happy to print it for everyone's interest. ED.

PAGE 5 HAIL SAIL What a play on words and fortunately all damage done has now healed! Perth s recent hail storm caused severe damage to many areas of the CBD and there has been widespread coverage of that damage and the cost, not least to insurance companies of close to 1 billion dollars. We are still seeing cars with dents in roofs, bonnets, doors and glass damage around the streets but can you imagine what it was like for the Tornado fleet competing in the Nationals at Nedlands? The fleet were out racing when the storm struck and Brendan Smith, Tim Lowther and Brett Burvill were out there fending off the golf ball sized hailstones in 40+ knot winds on various unprotected Tornado s for several minutes which must have felt like hours. For those that may not be aware, Brett had a camera attached to his boat and has transferred the footage to U Tube. Go to U Tube and look up Windrush Tornado Hailstorm for a vivid incite to that afternoon on Melville Water. The sound of the hailstones bouncing off boat, mast, boom and body is incredible. The water around the boat looks like it is boiling What started as a smile on Brett's face soon changed as the video progresses and the seriousness of the event becomes apparent to the unlucky sailors. It is fortunate that no one w a s Brendan & Josie sailing White pointer, State Titles Jervoise Bay 2010

PAGE 6 PORT DENISION REGATTA LABOUR DAY LONG WEEKEND 2010 I would say the three hottest days we ve encountered. Viki, her sister Penny and I headed north Friday morning, pulled into Moora for lunch, the trusty Bacon & Egg burger, shared it with the bush flies and the heat. Back into the Falcon and pushed on into a strong hot easterly with thunder storm clouds building up over Eneabba, it was 47degrees. The storm started a number of bushfires and the Brand Highway was closed mid afternoon, remaining closed until Tuesday morning. The Easterly didn t abate until Sunday lunch time, the wind picking up each night and keeping the minimum temperature up around 30 throughout the night. The rigging area inside the Marina and is ideal with plenty of lawn, scattered with seats and gazebo s for all the helpers to gather around. Saturday s race was postponed until mid afternoon as the Easterly was a tad fierce. Once we got going it was good fun with a fleet of Sloops and Cats, Mal Buzza sailed away in Heat 1 for a win, with the sloops having a close tussle for the minor places. Saturday night was a BBQ tea in the Fisherman s hall, a great spread of salads were provided by the ladies, we all ended up out side, eating on the lawn area, trying to beat the heat. Sunday morning more of the same, except the Easterly started to drop of late morning and made for some interesting racing as places changed with puffs of breeze coming off shore. After lunch we got in 2 races this time to starboard in a very weak sea breeze. The highlight of the weekend was for Viki and Robin Holmes friend Nardia (who s from Germany) to get up close to a Joey which had been brought down for a cool off. It was quite happy to have a swim and be crowded by curious onlookers. I must say a special thanks to Ruda and Viki for doing all the starts and finishes from the jetty in horrendous conditions. Also Quinn and Paula Plozza for the organising and the ladies who made the lunches and salads each day, all was much appreciated. The presentations and evening meal was at the Little Star Fish Café situated on the south beach. Benny and Nadia Dei-Guidici won on a count back from Rob Thomson and Colby with Mal Buzza third. A full set of results elsewhere in the newsletter. Strawberry Wave

Page 7 Hi guys When I was down at the windrush states Ryan Duffield brought along one the new boats Windrush are making. I was lucky enough that Ryan asked me if I would like to have a sail. Ryan is the most talented young sailor I know. He started sailing crewing on a windrush and is now sailing Tornado and F18 and seems to win everything he is in. Before winning the windrush nationals he won the Hobie tiger titles and has just won the S/Sloop windrush state titles and is now about to fly over to europe to sail the new windrush edge F18 over there and will be sailing in many countries over there. T he new Windrush is a very high performance catamaran made to fit into the F18 class, the hulls sit on top of the water so it has centre boards, its nose is out of the water most of the time, its 18 foot long with a square top mylar main and self tacking jib and a flat kite. We went out in around 5 or 6 knots of wind and it was going about as fast as I would go in 12 knots on my boat. Ryan was pointing much higher than I thought was normal due to the centre boards,he headed down a bit and asked me to pull up the kite so I pulled and pulled and I looked up and nearly fell over backwards as a puff filled it. Wow we were flying a hull at one stage and you could feel the acceleration and the apparent wind on your face. It was amazing how fast we were going with so little wind. One of the things i was amazed at how fast it tacked it can turn in its length, no dragging hulls through the water, it just pivots on the centre boards and the bow just skims across the water, the jib self tacks so you dont touch it. I was very impressed with the new Windrush and I wish Ryan all the best in europe. Regards Quin For more information and some good photo s go to the Windrush website or follow the leads to Facebook. 9 Page 9 Hi all Our first PDYC Labour Day regatta was a great success. I firstly would like to thank those people who helped out over the weekend, it could not have happened with out you all and I would like to thank everyone for coming. Conditions were trying on Saturday with hot easterly winds and bush fires 20km south of town so the water was the only place to be. The wind was a bit strong Saturday morning so we waited until it dropped a bit and managed to get two races in. The evening BBQ was very good thanks to those that did the salads and cooking. On Sunday we managed to get four races in, two with easterly and two with a light southerly. The racing was very close with nothing between first and second and at the end of racing there was only one point separating the first three places which made it very exciting. The presentation at the little starfish cafe was great. We had to ask Rob to look in his rule book to split first and second places due to a tie. Benni & Nadia Dei Giudici won the last race for overall first. Rob Thomson & Colby Hobbs came second, and one point behind them was Mal Buzzer in third and back in forth place was Quin & Jared Plozza. I counted sixteen boats sailing with boats coming from Perth to Carnarvon. It was great to see so many boats come from so far away. We will hold another regatta at the same time next year and also one at Lake Indoon, Eneabba on the long weekend at the end of September. See previous page for results.

Page 10 Geographe Bay Race Week On the first Sunday of Geographe Bay Race Week Tim Hodgeson was trusted with the use of a 10m Flying Tiger but found he was without a crew for the day (I wonder why?) What does he do but compound his problem and invite some highly competitive and athletic Windrush sailors from Safety Bay to join him for the weekend! So it was that Ron Edwards, Mal Buzza, Martyn Hewitt and Bob Lowther travelled to Busselton Marina to meet up with Tim and acquaint ourselves with the boat only to find that it was on the water racing which left us with no option but to find the local Coles Store and get supplies in...we knew Liquorland wouldn t be far away!! As mentioned, the boat is 10m long and basically an overgrown dinghy showing a good pace when the breeze picked up and the asymmetric was flying. Our race had all conditions from no wind to 18knots and took us from the start off the Marina north for perhaps 10 miles before we headed west to Bunker Bay (as close to Cape Naturalist as you can get) then back east to the finish at the Marina. All up a very enjoyable and interesting 10 hour race that saw us last but one, but for a rookie crew and the fact that all the boats behind us kept retiring we did well and many thanks Tim for the opportunity and Paul the forward hand who was a great help with acres of sail cloth that had a mind of it s own at times. We would all do it again if the opportunity presented itself.

Page 11 JBSC STATE TITLES PINK ELEPHANT AWARD 2010 Well after Bob Lowther was railroaded into receiving the award in 2009 by Andrew Harcourt he has done a magnificent job of baby sitting the Pink Elephant for the past 12 months, taking pride of place in the Lowther s bedroom. What a difference a windy series does for the awards, by Saturday night they were queuing up. Even the Invitation race was wild, Bob Lowther and myself both had capsizes, and Peter Hawley felt the start line was closer to Freo than JBSC. After the race Peter phoned his wife in Queensland and later admitted to having a one-way conversation on the mobile with his dog and his wife. Anthony Saw was heard calling his father An old man at the start and giving Keith some hurry up. Keith had the last laugh as he beat Anthony over the finish line. So after a clap off on Friday night Anthony easily took the Elephant, which Bob Lowther gladly handed on. Saturday: - The wind had been howling all night and didn t start to abate until 11am, so wild conditions again. A couple of boats wanted more sailing and elected to do an extra leg, Peter Robinson and then Abi & Richard on Sunday felt the course was too short as well. Black Cat and Frisky were seen renewing their friendship close to the committee boat once again! Tim Lowther thought that trapezing on the reach looked like fun; well it was for a short while. Quinn & Jarrod Plozza thought they had won a race and sailed through the finish line to NO hooter, apparently the expression on Quinn s face was priceless, they were only a couple of legs short. Justin Bellinger was leading the Super Sloops down to the finish with Ryan Duffield close behind; Justin must have thought this is not right and had the big cartwheel 30 meters from the finish. Ryan said thanks very much, Justin got the boat up quick enough to finish 2 nd and earlier in the same race Justin had been smacked by the boom right on the left eyebrow, had a decent cut and the best black eye. Not to be out done Simon Elliot coming back to the beach flying a hull with his newly acquired second hand Mal Buzza sail, promptly went over only 50 meters from the beach. Justin Bellinger had easily won the Pink Elephant for Saturday, so now all he had to do was make sure he didn t still have it on Sunday night. Sunday morning I gave Tim Lowther a hand to replace his trapeze ropes as he wanted to get closer to the water, well that worked! As one broke and he ended up in the drink, bending his tiller at the same time. John McKecknie is known for his careful attention to detail. Three years ago he carefully put his glasses away in his tent pocket, only to re-discover them this weekend after erecting the said tent. Trouble was, his eyes had changed so much; they were of no further use. Anthony Saw, what can I say, he just wanted that Elephant so bad! I know that we have all heard of roll tacks, well Anthony does roll jibes straight over the rear beam and the boat sailed off before capsizing, then Anthony had a small swim before being reunited with his boat. Well Anthony shot the competition to bits and Justin kindly although reluctantly, presented him with the Pink Elephant for the following 12 months. Anthony will now have to drive himself and the Pink Elephant to Carnarvon for the State Titles in Rob Thompson

Page 12 Contrary to the belief that Anthony Saw wanted the Pink Elephant more than a State Title win he was caught trying to drown it!! Talk your way out of that one Anthony., what other reason would you have for sailing like this? Frisky on the prowl for Black Cat

On the final day of the States the racing was postponed for several hours and thanks to the three current State Title holders, Benny, Ryan and Mal we were treated to an insight as to how they rig and sail their boats in their designated classes. Thanks guys and it is a tribute to the friendship and association that the Class has that there is that willingness to help and share from the Champions to the beginners...all are equal. Whilst knowledge was imparted and notice was taken and no doubt immediately put into practice there must have been some bits you left out because you all 3 won AGAIN. OK guys this is what we do..sometimes!!!
