1 Welcome to the Sailing Season at RRSRC! OPENING RACE OF THE SEASON THIS WEEKEND!! That s right! The long winter is over and we can now go racing again! Dust off the cobwebs, make those repairs that you ve been meaning to do all winter, and come along for what is sure to be a great day. Let s hope the rain stays away and the river clears up a bit. Busy Bees Did Great Work! The pre-season busy bee was held last Sunday. A MASSIVE Thank You to all those who came down to lend a hand... Especially Chris Hallett, Colin Woodbry and Bill Heuchmer who did a great job mowing, whipper snippering and moving boats. Thanks also to: Roy Craven for helping Chris to measure out the yard to organise boat storage in the yard. Bill for starting to build some racking for the yard. Dave Bowler for cleaning the verandah and the windows Norm Hunt for cleaning and tidying the Mens loo. This little band of workers achieved great things on the day. The Club looks great! Thank you all for making the effort. Club Membership is now Due The sailing season is upon us again and it s time to renew your membership. It is extremely helpful if we get memberships in early so we can get some projects happening around the club. A reminder that membership is payable by direct transfer only. 2 Commodore s Request: Hi everyone, The sailing season begins 7th of September, being the first Sunday of the month and Fathers Day. Thanks to all who have volunteered to run the club on Sunday - should be heaps as Dave Scott is allocated, Danielle is doing food and Col Hinwood tells me Gunter and Jan will be doing the tower. But if you re around, feel free to lend a hand. 2)The only day in September not filled for Duty is the 28th. There are however still plenty of other days for the remainder of the season not filled. Please pass on your names to me if you would like to get the job out of the way early in the season. Anyone who would like to volunteer for duty at any other time please let me know. Anyone who does not volunteer a preference will be allocated a day by me. If the day you are allocated does not suit, please sort out a swap or alternative yourself and then let me know the end result. Thanks for your help with this. Jenni Heuchmer. In some testing (light) conditions at Hayling Island, Australia s superstar Nathan Outteridge won it again!

3 Upcoming Events Did we mention that the Sailing season starts this weekend?!?! If our busy RRSRC sailing calendar isn t enough for you, here are some events being held nearby that you may want to attend: The Big River Sailing Club s ever popular Bridge to Breakers Regatta, this year on the weekend 15/16 November. All the details are in the attached Notice of Race. The format has been so successful in recent years that we haven t changed a thing. The one thing we can t control is the weather - but all you sailors know that. We really try to make this event a challenge for more experienced racers as well as cater for juniors and less experienced competitors. It is also an opportunity for all you regulars to bring along family and friends to see how much fun we have at Harwood and encourage them to think about joining and learning to sail or if already sailors join our regular Saturday afternoon series of races. Pan - Pacific Masters Games More than 12,000 participants from Queensland, interstate and overseas are expected to converge on one of the world s most popular holiday destinations to compete in one of Australia s premier multi-sport events. Beneath Coffee River Lies Hidden Secret The recent deluge and subsequent browning of the river wasnt enough to deter us, and a couple of other keensters, from going for a sail with only one week left until the start of the season. With a very limited window of opportunity we took to the Brown and Sharky waters of the river last weekend for what was a really fun, really short sail. During a bear-away our centreboard hit something very hard (in a usually very deep part of the river). The boat stopped but we didn t. It was a spectacular crash! Both of us ended up in the Jib and the centreboard ended up about 100mm further back in the boat than it was previously. It could only have been an unseen log from the recent deluge so keep an eye out when you re racing next weekend! No injuries and only minor damage. We ll see you next Sunday! Kynan.
