ISSUE 3, OCTOBER 2016 Big River Reflections Welcome to the new sailing season! It s warming up and now it s time to get back on the water. The new calendar at Big River has already begun with Club Racing commencing on 20th August. The last event at Big River prior to the Winter recess was the Impulse Eastern States Regatta (details page 2) The Annual General Meeting and an Extraordinary General Meeting were held on the 3rd Sept. The committee for the coming year has been appointed and the club constitution has been refined with the impetus for this task provided by Pam Ditton who spent has many hours breathing new life into a rather aged document. The result of this exercise is a constitution that better reflects Big River Club s values and aims. To kick off the new season a Sailing Fun day was hosted at Big River for kids from Pacific Valley School. Kids who had never sailed tried their hand at steering a sailing boat and the feedback has been very positive. (details page 3). We have two great regattas coming up - the Single Hander and the Bridge to Breakers - both iconic events recognised not only in the Northern Rivers but in the wider sailing community of NSW and Queensland. This is evident in the numbers of sailors from far afield who will make time to travel to Harwood to take part in these events (more details pages 6 & 7). While many sailors had donned their ugg boots and put their boats in mothballs for the winter, other hardy souls tackled the elements at a number of events around the region (details pages 2 & 3) getting cold but keeping themselves tuned up in readiness for the new season. 2 Winter Sailing Well maybe not quite that extreme! Big River had been approached to host the 2016 Eastern States Regatta for the Impulse Associations of Victoria, NSW and Queensland. David Harrison had this to say T h e S i x t h E a s t e r n S t a t e s I m p u l s e Championships were generously sponsored by Boating Camping and Fishing (BCF) and were superbly hosted by the Big River Sailing Club, Harwood Island, over the ANZAC Day long weekend. The Impulse class continues to display it's growth in popularity, with a record fleet of 2 9 b o a t s, f o r a n E a s t e r n S t a t e s Championship, contesting the eight race series. The regatta attracted many new faces and boats and competitors traveled from as far as the central coast of NSW to the central coast of QLD to contest in the closely fought series. The regatta was held in mostly moderate Southerly conditions and short courses on the river ensured close racing. Michael Brown, from Lake Macquarie, in his newly launched dinghy sports factory produced impulse has had a stellar season, and added the Eastern States Championship to his collection of trophies this year which has included the A u s t r a l i a n, N S W a n d Q L D championships.in second place was the consistently sailed 'Tarfun' sailed by David Mann from the Port Curtis Sailing club in Gladstone. Mann is only relatively new to the class and has shown continual improvement in results.in third place was David Harrison sailing 'Cosmosoarus' from the Brisbane Sailing Squadron on the Brisbane River. 2
Winter Sailing Continued.. Tweed Valley Sailing Club s Tumbulgum Passage Race - 3rd July, 2016 A bad weather forecast forced a postponement but the Tumbulgum passage race was eventually run successfully with a healthy fleet of some 30 boats. Winter on the Northern Rivers sometimes heralds light wind and the start of the race was a drifter however as the fleet wended its way downstream the wind improved. Denise Bruschweiler, Wayne Culph, Glenn Williams, Paul Hargan and Lea Foster from Big River Club took part and Glenn Williams made an excellent showing winning the race. TVSC were wonderful hosts providing efficient race management and some warming and hearty snacks for weary, cold Sailing Fun Day - 13th August The school is Pacific Valley Christian School and we had 6 families (including the Mulligans ) with a total of 12 kids and 9 adults, plus the school sports master, who made a guest appearance in the afternoon. Parents were very impressed with club facilities and especially so, with the volunteers who went out of their way to give the kids a wonderful sailing experience. Feedback from the kids has been super-positive. They all had a fantastic time and we may score a couple of new members (the principal s two youngest daughters). The school included a run-down in the school newsletter singing the praises of the event and those who made it a success. 3
Sailing Fun Day continued.. The P & F Fellowship would love to organise another day when the weather warms up as we think that the cooler weather may have discouraged a lot of families. Report from Leanne Mulligan who was instrumental in getting the event happening. Club Repairs and Improvements We have received a letter from Kevin Hogan & Fiona Nash confirming funding of $10, via a Community Development Grant. This programme is overseen by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development and the grant is earmarked for a new Sail Training Boat. The boat that has been selected as suitable by the committee is an Envy and they are built by Dinghy Sports in Mona Vale envy.html. We now wait for the department to forward a formal agreement before we can make any purchase order. We had some minor damage to the club in the early August storms, one front window was broken, and the clear light roof sheets in the disabled amenity block and rescue boat shed were shredded by hail. Rod has replaced the sheets and had the damaged window reglazed. Bob and Glenn chopped up fallen SheOak trees east of the Sabre shed. Hariet, Rod and Mark cleared the park and club area of fallen branches, which all resulted in one impressive bonfire. Report from Hariet Woodrow Envy dinghy from Dinghy Sports 4
Thirty five people from the Qld Wooden Boat Association, came to Yamba on Monday 5th Sept for a week's sailing and exploring the Lower Clarence. Some of the members visited last year, took home excellent reports about the area and waterways, thus encouraged more visitors for this year's event. They brought 18 beautiful wooden boats, including puttp u t t s, s m a l l s a i l b o a t s a n d l a r g e r cruisers. While most enjoyed the waterbased activities, quite a few of the ladies hit the coffee shops, op-shops and galleries in Yamba and Maclean. On the Wed morning, the flotilla set off from Yamba for the Sailing club at Harwood, where they enjoyed a picnic lunch with some members of the club, and were welcomed by our Commodore. They were all very appreciative of the use of our facilities as well as the hospitalitity of the club and the beautiful surroundings. Accounts of adventures on the way up the river were very entertaining. One boat with a new 4stroke engine, broke down on the way, was towed back to Yamba and the skipper arrived later by car. Locals Peter Schaeffer and Jim McIndoe, travelled with the group in Peter's electric-powered launch. All were impressed with its silence and ease of movement. After lunch they set out on the return journey, but were confronted by the last of an incoming tide and easterly wind. We waved " goodbye" three times to one sailor who wasn't used to tidal sailing, and kept being swept back to the club. Later that evening, same sailor was heard to comment that he was falling out of love with the Clarence. Other days were spent with more boating, as well as taking time to see some of our local areas and a trip to the "classic" old pub at Iluka for lunch. It's fairly certain that there will be another visit next year, possibly with even more boats. Report from John Hayes What s made of wood and floats? 5
coming up! Water Sports - Have a Go! Sept 24th Make a splash this summer, come and try sailing, kayaking by paddle and pedal, stand up paddle boarding, and the latest toy from Hobie, a stand up pedal board. How do they do that?! See it for yourself on Saturday 24 th Sept from 9am when all sorts of water toys and boats will be available to try for free. Make it your fun day, family picnic, beach party, whatever floats your boat. It all happens at the riverside beach, parklands and grounds of the Big River Sailing Club, Harwood and is co-hosted by Maclean Outdoors, local suppliers of all the Hobie toys. Life jackets supplied, sausage sizzle lunch, just come along and be prepared to get wet, and have fun doing it. Life has no limits, so go for it. Enquiries to Maclean Outdoors or Big River Sailing Club Copmanhurst to The Sailing Club Tuesday 4th October: 10am - Meet at Copmanhurst boat ramp & travel downriver to the Big River Ski Lodge at Seelands ( ) for our first overnight stop. Wednesday 5th: 9am - Travel to Grafton for a lunch break, then onto Brushgrove for overnight stopover, with dinner at Brushgrove Hotel. Thursday 6th: 9am - Travel to Maclean for lunch then on to the sailing club. For more details contact John Hayes jhayes093@yahoo.com.au Clarence River Run 4/5/6th Oct Single Hander Regatta. Oct 22nd/23rd As the name would suggest all single handed off-the-beach classes are welcome to enter. In the past we have seen Lasers, Sabres, Impulses, OK s, RS100 s but there are so many other classes and we want to see you here at Big River enjoying the idyllic Big River location and legendary hospitality. Camping is free for competitors and there is plenty of room on the well-kept lawns. There are hot showers at the end of the day, a sumptuous BBQ and salad buffet on Sat night and a cooked or continental breakfast on Sun morning all at reasonable cost. The club canteen operates for morning/afternoon teas and lunch both days. 6
This event features divisions for dinghys, skiffs, catamarans, trailer yachts and yachts. So no matter what type of boat you sail there is no excuse for you not to turn up to take part in this regatta. Some juniors are capable of sailing the full course but if there is a demand we will also offer a short course for less experienced juniors. It is a super weekend of sailing with all the customary Big River camping accommodation and catering along with great camaraderie during and after sailing. The club verandah provides a top spot for spectators to take in the great riverside atmosphere and racing. There are great prizes on offer so don t miss the chance to take one home with you.
