Richmond River Sailing & Rowing Club NEWSLETTER 10 Nov 2015 From the (interim) Editor and Web-Master If anyone takes some good photos on a Sunday, especially on the beach could you please them to me markpierce2481@yahoo.com.au by Mon evening, so I can include them in the Newsletter Also, any news, especially Idle Gossip, please send to me by Mon. Evening Cheers, Mark Midnight Saturday, at Harwood
HARWOOD BRIDGE TO BREAKERS REGATTA Nov 7/8 There was no RRSRC Club racing last Sunday, because many of us were at Harwood Bridge to Breakers Regatta. (thanks Colin Hinwood, for your Trailerables Report, below) A great weekend of sailing was had by all. It wouldn t be Harwood without a bit of weather. It came in the form of a massive electric storm at midnight on Saturday. And then a violent rain squall that came and went in half an hour, just catching the end of the second race of the morning. One yacht lost it s mast, and a Hartley TS16 had to take refuge in the mangroves, but, thankfully, no-one was injured. Rear Commodore Chris had just brought his Nacra in from the shore, back to beside his tent, when the squall hit. As he was running for shelter, he heard someone yelling. It was fellow Nacra sailor Steve, from Brisbane. Steve was sitting on Chris and Nola s boat trying to avoid a serious lift-off!! Chris ran back, and together they brought her in for a soft landing if Steve hadn t noticed the boat, they reckon she would have landed fairly on Nola, who was taking a rest in the tent beside!!!
The bream-fishing Grand Final was on, too. These set-ups cost over $130,000. Who said that sailing was an expensive hobby? Trailerables Harwood Regatta 2015 (Thanks Colin Ed ) This Regatta once again proved itself as a premier event for this area. The winds were kind & the courses good. Breeze was mostly mild to moderate, & even a rain squall drenching the fleet after Race 2 on Sunday, couldn t dampen enthusiasm for the next race. The stand-out TS was the Larsen family Elliott 7 Elvis, who revelled in the conditions. (I think it s ELVISH, Colin Ed) The Saturday journey up to Iluka, saw S550 WhiteTail get an big early lead, when wind went light for the first part of the spinnaker run. This big lead was then gradually whittled down on the fresh upwind past Browns Rocks, so the Top Mark had WhiteTail closely followed by Elvis & Just a Touch. WhiteTail held the lead, to the Finish with Just a Touch 2 nd & Elvis 3 rd [corr. times]. Sunday saw light/mild conditions, & Elvis with its no1 up was the star, taking both races in the lighter conditions. This event, put on by a dinghy club, is the closest, & easiest premier event for Ballina club TS sailors to attend. It needs continuing support to survive.
The TS s at the start line, with event organiser Harriet, keeping things on track Harwood Monos. Maurice Reynaud came 3 rd, over all, in a very large fleet of non-gennaker monos. He also came second in the Juniors. Awesome sailing, Maurice. Maurice didn t let a 30 knot rain squall stop him from trying to pick off that pesky Sabre, that had snuck into 2 nd place.
GENNAKERS (Thanks Baz, for this Report) Michael won the bridge to breakers race and I was 3rd then Sunday Liam came to crew for me and we had 3 firsts which gave us the regatta win overall and Michael came 3rd overall. (Great stuff, Folks Ed )
CATS Zac H took out the Cat title, with Bill H and Ian Mitchie nipping at his heels. Great stuff, Zac
ONLY 1 SLEEP TO GO.. Phil, Rowing John, Will & Mark gave the yard a good work-over on Wednesday 14 Oct. Moved ALL the boats, and mowed behind them. Mowed everywhere, including nature strip. Next Mowing Day Wed 11 Nov, am..all welcome... If anyone can t make it on Wednesday mornings, but feels an uncontrollable urge to zap those untidy weeds, please do grab the club mower and whipper-snipper, and go for it. We regular mowers won t be upset ;-) The newly-levelled patch of ground in front of the club has been re-sown with grass-seed by Rear Commodore Chris, and Phil. Thanks Guys. With the current warm, dry weather, the area needs to be kept moist. If you re down at the club, and it looks dry out there, please grab the hose and give it a sprinkle and please try not to walk on it. 25 Oct update: Rear Commodore Chris has put more seed down, as some of it didn t make it so please keep sprinkling it, and NOT walking, driving etc etc on it thanks 30 TH Oct update: The bare patch is SHRINKING steadily. Well done to all the waterers Mowing John, Phil, Rear Commodore Chris
FROM THE REAR COMMODORE. The exterior lights are being left on regularly. If you re the last to leave the club, or are down during the week could you please check to see if they ve been left on. If yes please switch them off (the switch is where the old stair-well was) Thanks Chris H IDLE GOSSIP * Has NS/MG 14 Dark & Stormy joined the club and who may own her? And is this the start of the Great MG14 Revival at RRSRC? Time will tell.. *Is there another older Tasar, with original Dacron sails, joining the club? Is this the start of a Tasar Fleet? Danielle s Tasar is for sale (see Marketplace section, below). Snap it up now, and be in the vanguard of the Great Tasar Revival!! (Note: Despite being an older boat, with original sails, Danielle s boat has consistently been up there with the most modern, fastest NS14s, in our club racing Ed)
A bit of Tasar action * Rumour has it that another Castle 650, is coming to the club. That would make 3 Castle 650 s, and 2 Castle 550 s *Are there more A-Class Cats on the way to the club? And is there room in the yard to store them? Storage pressures are building. If you have a boat in the yard with unpaid fees, keep a close eye on the car-park next to the club. Rumour has it that your boat could find a new home there
