7 WHAT IS GORE-TEX FABRIC? GORE-TEX fabrics are created by bonding a fully waterproof GORE-TEX membrane between high-performance textiles. The result is a fabric that offers a combination of high levels of breathability and total waterproof protection. permeable to allow water vapour from the skin to escape with ease. GEARING UP FOR THE CHALLENGE To ensure that every sailor is protected in these formidable conditions, Musto has put together a recommended kit list to coincide with its pioneering 3-layer system. Donna Von Tunk, an Australia-born 47-year-old chiropractor from Bedfordshire, for example, couldn t have known the lifechanging consequences speaking to two of the Clipper Race Crew would have. A fire was lit and my enthusiasm for this race took off, Donna admits. By January 2018, I had my interview and signed up for the race of my life. Being immersed in Mother Nature at her most powerful, raw and remote had a strong appeal. Every Clipper Race crew member will need to pass each of its four gruelling levelsof training. Musto determines the waterproofness of its fabric using a hydrostatic waterhead. This is measured by pulling the fabric tightly over a tube. The tube is then filled with water until water begins to leak through the fabric after a 24 hour period. The height of the water column, in millimetres, is the hydrostatic waterhead measurement. Even after the fabric has been washed five times, BR2 has a minimum hydrostatic waterhead of 10,000mm and up to 15,000mm. This is a significantly higher waterproof rating than the industry minimum of 1,500mm. BR2 fabrics also allow 7,000g of moisture to pass through it, giving it a breathability rating of 7,000g/24hrs. 15 THE 3-LAYER SYSTEM EXPLAINED Your environment influences your attire - this should never be truer than when you re out at sea. A 3-Layer System is the most effective way to ensure insulation and protection against the elements while maintaining the freedom of movement you need to perform. Pioneered by Musto, this system has since become the standard for the global sailing market as a result of its efficient thermoregulatory properties. Working on the premise that water transmits heat up to thirty times faster than air, the key principle behind our system is to keep the body as dry as possible. It also needs to provide enough ventilation for you to remain comfortable during periods of exertion out on the seas. MIDDLE LAYER The mid layer builds on the temperature regulation provided by the base. Its main purpose is to insulate; trapping dry, warm air and holding it close to the body. OUTER LAYER From torrential rain to icy waves, you re at the mercy of the elements when you re sailing. An outer layer is your primary defence against the weather. Your environment and the type of activity you are engaged in are two of the key factors that will inform your layering choices. You may find yourself requiring every layer from base to outer. However, on a leisurely sail around the marina on a fair day, a base layer would suffice, perhaps with a mid-layer over the top in case the temperature drops. It s always wise to understand the importance of your base layer - there is a misconception in the sailing world that a run-of-the-mill t-shirt can make a good base. However, a standard cotton t-shirt does not have odour control properties, UPF protection, it isn t fast-drying nor does it have sweat-wicking properties. When highly active, cotton sticks to your skin and increases in weight when wet. Your base layer is synonymous to comfort, so understanding them is incredibly important, especially when spending long periods of time on a boat. No two base layers are the same their design and the fabrics qualities have been chosen according to their purpose. For example, if you are going to be highly active in very cold conditions for long periods of time you would be best suited to wearing an active base layer. These garments are body mapped to help regulate body temperature, they have antibacterial NILIT body fresh technology to minimise body odour and the seamless construction eliminates chaffing. On the other end of the scale if you are highly active in hot conditions and are likely to meet spray from the water, you would be better suited to a quick-dry base layer. A good mid-layer should offer breathability and warmth depending on your level and type of activity. Sailors, who are out at sea in changeable and extreme weather conditions should look for GORE-TEX in their mid-layers, as well as fleece linings. If sailing in fair weather, opt for a thermal fleece mid that also has a DWR finish for additional protection against the elements. 16 BASE-LAYERS Choosing the correct base-layer for the climate and level of activity you face will make a world of difference to your comfort on the water. As the layer closest to your skin, a base-layer is the foundation of the 3-layer system and must wick moisture away to minimise heat loss. It also needs to provide enough ventilation for you to remain comfortable during periods of exertion out on the seas. And when Eilidh McIntyre sailed her first catamaran with her dad at eight months old, little did she know that this would be the mark the start of a successful sailing career. Both progressed through the pathway of British Youth Sailing to join the British Sailing Team in the race for Olympic glory.
