wind speed (knots) wind direction (degrees) The Race belonged to Dolphin Play Wednesday Wonders Summer Series Race 5 (31 Oct 218) DOLPHIN PLAY (John Brennan) led race 5 from start to finish and was never really challenged. She started minutes 17 seconds before any other yacht and finished 1 minute 2 seconds ahead of her closest rival. A great result for a yacht that didn t make the podium in the winter series. The wind speed averaged about knots for the afternoon which was the lowest of the series so far. It was enough to take the 4 yacht fleet around the 9.8 nautical mile course 24 in what was the slowest race of the series. However, it was a tight finish with all 4 yachts finishing within 17 minutes 7 seconds of each other. WW Summer Series Race 5 Wind Speed & Direction Wind Speed Wind Gusts Wind Direction PIZAZZ (P Martyn & R Kemp) won Start of the Day with the third perfect start of the series. Following DOLPHIN PLAY across the finish line was MARIBEL (Graham Frazer) with SALTSHAKER (Ken Gayler) finishing 3 rd. For the second successive week ESPRIT (Garry Anderson) recorded the fastest elapsed time - 1:41:27. This race brought a change to the top of the series aggregate. THE SECRETARY (George Shaw) remains on top but MARIBEL moves into 2 nd place whilst CASSANDRA of MELBOURNE (Bob Reeves) slips into 3 rd place. At this stage of the series CASSANDRA and SALTSHAKER are equal on points at the top of the table in the contest for the Shebessa Shield (awarded to the boat having the lowest combined score based on their placings in the winter and summer series.)
This was the 3 rd race this series for DOLPHIN PLAY and produced her best result by far. She started minutes 17 seconds before anyone else. At the first rounding of SYC 4 she still held a lead of 9 minutes seconds and was first across the finish line at 15:5:2 with a lead of 1 minute 2 seconds. DOLPHIN PLAY had her best start of the series when she was only 5 seconds late for her -5 minute handicap. She has had the slowest elapsed time of the fleet in 2 of her 3 races but was able to finish 1 place better in this race. DOLPHIN PLAY started the series 31 st in the aggregate. She was 2 th after race 4 and this win moves her into the aggregate top ten at 1 th place. MARIBEL has made a good start to the series. She recorded a 5 th place in her first race (race 3); a 25 th in race 4; and, now a second in race 5. She was only 1 second late for her 2 minute handicap when she started from th place. After sailing the first 4 legs of the course in 77 minutes 2 seconds she had moved into 4 th place at the first rounding of SYC 4. Her last 3 legs of the course were sailed in 5 minutes 25 seconds and she improved her position by a further 2 places. MARIBEL started the race 24 minutes 5 seconds behind DOLPHIN PLAY but finished 1minute 2 seconds after her when she crossed the finish line at 15:57:52. This 2 nd place gave MARIBEL a big lift in the aggregate taking her from 21 st to 2 nd place. The Jarken 925 SALTSHAKER has completed all 4 races held this series. She has had mixed results with two top ten finishes, a 2 th and a 21 st place. SALTSHAKER started this race from 7 th place only 4 seconds late for her 21 minute handicap. After overtaking VIVE LA VIE (Mark Sutherland) during the first 4 legs of the race SALTSHAKER found herself in th place rounding SYC 4 for the first time. It took her 49 minutes 53 seconds to complete the final 3 legs of the course and she crossed the finish line at 15:59:32 1 minute 4 seconds behind MARIBEL. SALTSHAKER moves from 1 th to 4 th in the aggregate.

About 47% of the course was downwind giving the crews chance to ponder. There were also times when the crew had to become more active.
(Above) BLUE TACK finished 33 rd whilst BABYDOLL (left) started & finished ahead of HOT CHIPPS. Not the best result for either ARC DE TRIOMPHE (left) or MAGIC (right) who finished 35 th and 4 th. Starting 1 second too soon proved costly for ROLLER COASTER (left) who finished 19 th. Not much breeze but ESPRIT found plenty of white caps.
A Real Wednesday Wonder A big week for Wednesday Wonder sailor Les Browne who celebrated his 9 th (yes nine zero) birthday! He must like being out on the water. Les and his crew sailed WINDSPEED in 19 out of 21 races in the winter series and is off to a flying start in the summer series sailing 4 out of 4 races. In addition Les maintains his skill level sailing Saturday Division 2 races. Proving it s never too late Les waited until he was about 8 before he got WINDSPEED. This has inspired a young 5 year old in the club who s now considering a new yacht. Photos by Bruce Parry & Graham Furness
