Objectives This Society is an organization of model builders, historians and artists who encourage the construction of nautical models, creation of marine art, and research in maritime history, at every level of expertise, through the exchange of ideas and presentations. Membership There is no charge to attend meetings, and all interested parties are invited. Annual dues are $12. payable in January. Presentations Members and guests are encouraged to bring in projects past and current, plans, modeling problems or maritime-related items of interest for discussion, or inclusion in the Ship s Log. Next Meeting Tuesday, June 28, 7:00 p.m. Tim Roberts, President Emeritus, took command and called the regular meeting to order in the absence of Capt. Brut who has had hip replacement surgery (which has been completed, successfully). The club has 28 paid members, and a few events had been reported. We had 2 visitors, Bryan Sieber of Bradenton and Cliff Stanis of Tarpon Springs. Bryan is a scratch builder of 18th century 3-masted frigates of war, and Cliff enjoys sailing out-of-the-box, FG, RC sailboats. More on Cliff, later. Some equipment and a kit were brought in for dispersal. A keel or strip clamp device came from Jan Ward, and was taken by Glenn Smith, as was a big RC tug kit partially started. A nearfocus clip-on binocular came from the Schuster family dental wing, and was taken for repair by Roman Barzana, to see if its clamp could be repaired. I., Sec/Ed and Keith VanHusen reported on Tampa s Spanish-American War era SS Mascotte. At Philadelphia s Seaport Museum, Terry Potter found the single sheet plan, and notified both Keith and Katie O Brien, who quickly jumped on the job and ordered it. Katie was the originator of the quest and wants a model, which will be built by Keith. It was not available on this meeting date. We will obtain it as soon as it is received. Hopefully it will have relatively complete detail. Galatea, a typical down Maine Friendship sloop. Glenn Smith brought not one, but two (count em) Friendship Sloops, representing kit and scratch builds in different scales.

Glenn reports: I brought in two models, a Friendship Sloop constructed from a kit and another, scratch built from the plans included with the kit.

The scratch-built model is constructed of walnut for the keel and cabin, cherry planking, maple deck planks and padauk for the seats and other accent work.

I brought up the problems of planking which led to an interesting club discussion re the fitting, cutting and bending of planks.

They are from La u g h i n g Wh a l e, which was bought by BlueJacket in Currently available, it appears, from Naturecoast.com, as one of nine kits in that product line. Glenn reports: I brought in two models, a Friendship Sloop constructed from a kit and another, scratch built from the plans included with the kit. The latest version is twice the kit size and measures about 24 inches in length and 9 inches beam, not including another several inches of bowsprit. The scratch-built model is constructed of walnut for the keel and cabin, cherry planking, maple deck planks and padauk for the seats and other accent work. The kit was given to me and the woods were scrap pieces so the total cost of the two models so far is $0. I brought up the problems of planking which led to an interesting club discussion re the fitting, cutting and bending of planks. My next project is the HMS Warrior as per the series of books by William Romero. All frames have been completed so that work is well underway. Respectfully submitted to the club. Glenn Glenn s efforts are based on a 1982 Laughing Whale kit and plan. Steve McMurtry has returned with his Chas. W. Morgan deck furniture, some of which sets atop the deck and some penetrates, so must be accommodated early. There is a very large and fancy skylight cabinet that is prominent. Steve sought advice on an adhesive to fasten in microscope slide glass that he says is easily sized with a scribe and a snap. Watch crystal glue was suggested. Steve McMurtry is reproducing, from scratch, the elaborate deck furniture of the Charles W. Morgan, having taken photos at the NRG Conference at Mystic last Fall.

Basically I expanded the line drawing I had to the full-scale size of the model, which is 1-1/2 inch to 1 foot. This will make the model 37 inches long. On Saturday (5/28) I will be going to Roger s home to discuss my plans in more detail and learn what construction options I have. (For away folks, Dennis lives about 16 miles from Cliff, while Lake Michigan is about 1,200 miles away.} Guy Hancock jokes of starting a Plank-of-the-Month club. Guy is a plugger and for planking, that is nearly appropriate. Or, hang a pair a day, leaving the room after each set and in a month you are done. He is on the second layer: The ship in the bottle is a souvenir from a friend s recent trip to Cuba. It is signed by the artist. The Ar te - s a n i a Virginia model hull was planked over bulkheads with 2x5 mm basswood. The hull was faired, and the second layer of 0.5x5 mm mahogany planking has been started. I joked about being in the plank a month club. It is slow going, as each plank must be individually tapered to fit against the previous plank, and stealers and drop planks are necessary at both bow and stern. Some careful sanding will be required to smooth the finish layer, and I am hoping the sanding dust will fill some of the spaces where the planks gap slightly. I will paint some of the bulwarks and deck structures, but leave the hull in natural finish to show off the wood. Bess is gone, Betty is still scrappy. Tim refinished Bess with Conservator s Wax and did not repair some prominent dings, but did add a bit of broken-off rail towards the bow.

Conservator s Wax is one of several microcrystalline waxes used as a cleaner and polish for antique furniture and art objects.

Both boat and model were made by Clark Mills of Optimist Pram fame, for Betty Perkins and the Clearwater YC. Bess was about feet and Betty is about 96 years. Bess is gone, Betty is still scrappy. Tim refinished Bess with Conservator s Wax and did not repair some prominent dings, but did add a bit of broken-off rail towards the bow. Tim Roberts brought in the half hull model of Bess originally made in 1953 by Clark Mills the Dunedin boat builder. Tim has completed refurbishing the model for Betty Perkins whom Mr. Mills originally made the model. After gluing all replacement parts and final cleaning Tim applied Conservator s Wax to all surfaces bringing out the depth of the wood and imparting a soft sheen to the model. Conservator s Wax is one of several microcrystalline waxes used as a cleaner and polish for antique furniture and art objects. Microcrystalline Wax is a specific type of wax produced by de-oiling petroleum. Conservator s Wax and Renaissance Wax are two commonly available brands of microcrystalline wax. Both are a blend of highly refined microcrystalline waxes and can be used on painted and finished wood, metals, marbles, leather, gilding, plastics, and many other surfaces. He also spoke on one of the McComber sea series books, and has decided that one was enough, even though they involved local places he, Tim, has sailed. Tim Roberts has restored an historical half built by Clark Mills. Byron Rosenbaum is planning on building a half model of his son, Bob s yawl design for a the Caribbean charter trade.

The planked hull will hold its shape without the ribs, but torques when sail forces are applied. The keel will have a split bulb attached to each side. It is now shaped, with Loquat stem, Cherry transom, rudder and CB, plus Limewood floorboards, painted gray. The deck is canvassed with muslin, bedded in dilute white glue, painted with acrylic, and keel, king-plank and deck splash-guard of Cherry and Mahogany. The tiller has been wet-bent in a nylon and acrylic jig made for such purposes. It is Cherry and will be carved to final shape somehow. Crosby was a Rudder Editor and designed Snipe for the FL West Coast Racing Association, in This boat was designed in 1919, shown in Rudder of December, 1919, credited to George S. Gidge Gandy. Gidge is pronounced with soft G, a corruption of George, says Charley Morgan, who knew him. Pterocarpus is a pantropical genus of trees in the family Fabaceae but don t let that stop you. Apparently properly pronounced; Puh-Dook. The jig above was used to wet-form the cherry tiller above right T This is a nifty little vessel that has some serious history in the chain of small racing class development.

What I discovered on line was the history of the DeLand Army Steel Tug Boats built during and after the WWII. There was information on the West Volusia Historical Society Website www.delandhouse. com.

7 Ship'sLogTampaBayShipModelSociety7 Howard Howe has paused or finished his RC shrimper, Linda Lou, and embarked on a new historical quest: Hi Irwin - Following is my write up for your review, editing, etc... - Howard About a month ago I was searching on line for information about boats that had been built in DeLand, Florida that my Father was working on during WWII. He was a welder among other crafts. My Mother said he died of pneumonia in February, 1944 at the age of 45 while he was welding on these boats. He had served in WWI in Europe as a motorcycle dispatcher. I was six years old when he died. What I discovered on line was the history of the DeLand Army Steel Tug Boats built during and after the WWII. There was information on the West Volusia Historical Society Website com. Dan Friend is the curator for the DeLand Army Tugboat Preservation Group (DATPG), at usarmysttugs.com. The group has published numerous articles based on research and contacts during the past 3 yrs. The following summary information was obtained from their web site. Within six months of Pearl Harbor, Army Tugs were being built in Beresford, Florida by the American Machinery Corporation (AMC). Lake Beresford connects to the St. Johns River and the tugs were towed to Jacksonville for installation of the engines and final fittings. The first 11 US Army tugs were 74 long and 20 wide. The first tugs were built out of wood, but construction switched to all steel as material and skills became available. The first diesel engines were 400 HP and weighted about 20 tons. The last 18 tugs were all steel and built to a larger design with a 650 HP diesel engine. The boats were 86 long and 23 wide. Being all steel, these boats were top heavy. The designers did not consider this a real issue because they were not going to be sea-going. However, of the 29 built at least 16 went to Europe. At least 4 out of the 16 were lost during the war and often to foundering. In addition, there were problems with lack of proper anchors, minimal baffling in the diesel fuel tank, drinking water fouling with diesel fuel, non-watertight doors, and poor refrigeration. The AMC employees received top commendations for building the boats exactly as designed! I plan to do additional reading and research about the Army Tugs and this may result in another scratch built Tug Boat. I think I can create space for one more model! Howard mentioned at the meeting, that there may be one DeLand tug surviving in Venezuela (presuming Venezuela itself, survives). Howard Howe has launched an historical quest into the ships his Dad helped to build during WW II. They were not designed for offshore work, and a few turned turtle in ocean crossings. Byron Rosenbaum sent a couple of photos of Chinook, 59 OAL: She was designed and built around 1930 in Bristol,R.I. by Herreshoff as a racing Yawl NY40 class. Later converted to a Sloop. She is 40 ft on the WL. Her original name was Pauline as a Yawl then renamed Chinook as a Sloop. Byron s son Bob restored her, and Byron built this half model using her lines plan.
