4 YSA President s Message Welcome everyone to the 2012/13 sailing season. Before we look ahead to the coming season, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the major winners of their respective classes at World, National and State level championships. As most people would know by now our Executive Officer, Terry Reilly retired in March this year. I would like to wish Terry all the best in his retirement, from the Board and the wider sailing community. With Terry departing, the Board sat down and revaluated the position and changed the role to a Development/Office Manager. With this new role created we are pleased to welcome Ian Leeson on-board. Please feel free to ring Ian with any problems or queries as he will be glad to help you. This year sees the launch of a new initiative by Yachting Australia with the help of all the states called Discover Sailing. There has been a new website launched with this initiative which can be found at please visit the website it is very informative. All the training centres have now been renamed Discover Sailing Centres and are listed on the website. This website also makes it easier for the general public to find yacht/sailing clubs in their surrounding suburbs. It also has a lot of general information to help the public to get into the sport of sailing. The Board has been working towards setting up a Tackers Program in SA for a couple of years now and are pleased that the first centre will be up and running this year at Adelaide Sailing Club. We will be working towards setting up more centres over the next few years. To all the clubs and classes running major events this year I wish you all the best. Don t forget that if you need any help with Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions, that the Race Official s Committee will be pleased to help you. At this time I would like to acknowledge and give thanks to the contribution that our volunteers bring to this great sport of ours. Whether they are on the water officiating or manning safety craft, in the club rooms, or just assisting anywhere they can, they give up a great many hours so that we can enjoy our sport. Finally, on behalf of the Board of YSA and its administration, I wish you all fair winds and good sailing for the coming season. Rules Workshops & Race Officer Training Race Officials Committee members are available to conduct workshops for club and class members on any aspects of the Racing Rules of Sailing, including rules interpretation, protest procedures and race management and the Racing Rules. The new Rules come into effect on Jan 1 st 2013 so invite Race Officials to run an update seminar. Training Courses are available for persons wishing to gain skills or formal accreditation as a Race Officer, Umpire, Judge or Measurer under the Yachting Australia National Officiating Program. Please contact the Race Officials Chairman or Yachting SA office for further details. Protest Committee Personnel A member of the Race Officials Committee may be requested as the chair or additional member of a club Protest Committee. Refer to RRS Part 5 for information about protests and hearings. Appeals Appeals must be lodged with the YSA office. Include copies of all relevant documents in RRS Appendix F.2 and a filing fee of $110 inc. GST. Cheque payable to Yachting South Australia. Sailing Instructions for National & International Championships Sailing Instructions for Class and/or Association Events Classes are advised to issue Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for their State Championship events. Please contact Race Officials if you would like assistance with this. 23 The Discover Sailing Program In the second half of 2011 Yachting Australia benefited from a major market research project funded by the Australian Sports Commission, and conducted by Gemba, a leading Australian Sports and Entertainment consultancy. The in depth and far reaching report made extensive recommendations to Yachting Australia, the State Associations and Clubs about what needs to change to increase participation in sailing. As a result of this report Yachting Australia, in collaboration with the State Associations, developed the Discover Sailing Program to assist clubs convert enquires into active participation in sailing. The Discover Sailing Program is an Australia wide initiative being rolled out by Yachting Australia, the State Yachting Associations and Clubs, with the common objective of increasing participation in safe sailing at member clubs. The Program is designed to generate a positive response to enquiries at clubs and get Australians involved and participating in sailing at clubs. The Discover Sailing Program is being implemented over three years: , development and launch to clubs , adoption and implementation at interested clubs , broader promotion to the public. All clubs are invited to adopt the Program and become involved, offering opportunities to: Use the brand and logo and an associated range of professionally developed promotional material including videos. Be promoted on the Discover Sailing website. (Using Google is the most common way for people to find out about sailing). Be part of State and National Discover Sailing Days. Offer the new Discover Sailing Crew Matching Service: promoting the affordability of sailing by matching people with and without boats. Additionally clubs offering Learn to Sail Programs, in either dinghies or keelboats, are invited to become Accredited Discover Sailing Centres, delivering a range of accredited courses. This includes a new Discover Sailing Experience. One of the most important parts of the Program at clubs is the role of a Discover Sailing Host. This is the Ask me anything person, who could be a volunteer at a club assisting with introducing and inducting potential members to the club. The Discover Sailing Program offers a great opportunity to invite family, friends and work colleagues to your club to Discover Sailing.
