1 SFS NEWSLETTER FOR 30th NOVEMBER 2016 It was a busy sailing weekend for the Club, with fabulous conditions for racing our Historic 18-footers on Saturday, while the 12 footers held the first three heats of the NSW Championships for their class on both Saturday and Sunday, hosted by the SFS. Great racing in all the events. B ob C h apman 's R ace R epor t 12 F oot S k i ffs N S W C h ampi on sh i p Ti tl es Images fr om R ace 8 ( H 18s) an d H eat 1 ( 12s' N S W Ti tl es) SPECTATOR FERRY - FOLLOW THE FLEET! The Rosman Ferry Regal departs the SFS wharf at 2pm Saturdays during the sailing season. What a spectacular and exhilarating finish for the H18s, when Aberdare just pipped Britannia over the finish line, both with ringtails deployed. Australia IV and Tangalooma were not too far behind. Bob Chapman's race report captures the sense of excitement, and also provides the final placings for the spring point score. Many thanks, Bob. The report on the first three heats of the NSW 12 footers Championship comes courtesy of skiff.org.au where you can download the full results of the State Titles so far. The images section has photos of H18s and 12s together - often in the same frame, thus providing contrasts in the range of skills needed for skiff sailing. It was a great day to be on the ferry, with action everywhere! More great sailing this weekend! An advance notice that from 7-11 December, the Extreme Sailing Series will be sailed in the vicinity of Kirribilli Point, Cremorne Point and Fort Denison, hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. A map showing the exclusion zone and access channel will be published in next week's newsletter, and our H18s will need to factor the access channel and exclusion zone in their passage to the start line on 10 December. See you at the Club! Adrienne Jackson - Editor Tickets from the Sydney Flying Squadron 76 McDougall Street, Kirribilli. $20 members $25 non members Commentary and a race program provided. Bookings recommended. SAIL WELL, STAY WELL If you are over 18, come and join us to sail on one of our wonderful 18 foot skiffs or become part of our race management team on the safety and start boats.
2 SF S Race Repo r t Sat 26 th No vember Race 8 of the Season and final Heat of the Spring Point Score. Ideal weather for sailors and spectators with sunny skies and the predicted nor'easter settling in by late morning, along with plenty of action in the boat park where 7 historical 18s and a large group of 12ft skiffs rigged in anticipation of a great day's sailing on Sydney Harbour. The expectation was the Nor'easter would freshen and 6 skiffs with the exception of Alruth rigged conservatively with reefed no.2 mainsails and no.3 jibs, while Alruth carried their full size no.2 mainsail. The race got underway from a handicap start off Clark Island on the no.1 NE Course, into a solid NE breeze and the early stage of a run-in tide. Britannia off 15 mins was first away with a 2 min gap to Tangalooma, then 1 min to Alruth and Scot (possibly running a bit late?), The Mistake off 10 and Australia IV off 8 and eventually Aberdare off scratch (after a quick detour to a nearby pontoon to tidy-up the lashing on the reef in their sail). The skiffs made good progress on the beat down to the Beashel Buoy sailing on reasonably flat water, with Tangalooma the first to round ahead of Britannia, then Alruth, The Mistake, Australia IV, Scot and a gap back to Aberdare. We provide all needed training. It's free, fun, active and exhilarating on the best harbour in the world! Please contact us on , or info@sydneyflyingsquadron. com.au Britannia set a ringtail on the first run and soon made up time on Tangalooma, and then took over the lead for the run to Clark Island. The remaining skiffs made good time on the downwind legs, closing up on the 2 leaders and setting the scene for an interesting 2 nd lap. Britannia was first to round the Clark Island mark for the beat up to Chowder Bay, with the breeze having now freshened considerably. Britannia continued to lead the way to Chowder where they rounded ahead of Tangalooma, then Australia IV, Aberdare, Alruth, The Mistake and Scot. Britannia held a good lead after the shy run to Shark Island and smart crew work had the new spinnaker and then ringtail up and setting in quick time. Aberdare ran into 2 nd place on the run to the island, and after the gybe eventually put up their ringtail to set off after the Britannia, while Tangalooma made the Australia IV team work hard to get over them after the gybe. There was plenty of breeze to push the skiffs down the final run, with Aberdare able to sail a low course and slide through to leeward and snatch the lead from Britannia in the final stage of the run to take the gun by just 10 secs. Australia IV finished in 3 rd place 45 secs ahead of Tangalooma, then a gap back to Alruth and The Mistake, and finally Scot who put in a great effort to complete the course sailing short-handed and with a change of skipper. Tangalooma and Alruth finished the day tied on 23 points for the Spring Point Score, with the final outcome decided by count back and going to Tangalooma (ie. more first placings than Alruth) - well done. With thanks to our on-water support team of Chuck, Stu, Roy, Pierre, Peter, Adrienne, Louise, Alison, Nancy, Bill, David and the rest of our tireless volunteers, along with the dedicated team at Rosman Ferries. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie. Results for 26 th November Buy your copy for $35.00 for members of the SFS or $45 for nonmembers. Launched at the Sydney Flying Squadron by the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, on 27 March 2016, the book sold out on the day. Now reprinted, the book has great photos and stories of amazing lives and times. Of the men on the Honor Roll, 27 died on active service, 49 were wounded and nine died of wounds or war-related illness. The book ensures the debt to all of them is recorded, and their contribution to our great sailing legacy acknowledged. Something to treasure!
