FAIRWIND MEETING NOVEMBER 29 On Wednesday, November 29, the Fairwind Yacht Club Board of Directors and General Membership will meet at the Marina Venice Yacht Club (MVYC) located at 4333 Admiralty Way located in the Marina City Club s West Tower in Marina del Rey. The Board meeting will start at 6:30 pm. The General Meeting will start at 8 pm. All members are invited to attend. To attend the meeting enter Marina City Club s main gate. Tell the guard that you are going to the yacht club. The guard will give you a parking pass and a map. Once parked, go to the West Tower. Take the elevator or stairs up to the G2 level WHAT A YEAR! It is hard to believe that 2006 is wrapping up! Fairwind has continued to grow and enhance its program. Here are some trends that I have observed: Our fleet has been upgraded! Gone are our Catalina 27 s, Fairwind 1 and IO. In is a Catalina 28, Island Side. Rigging and sails on most boats have been replaced with newer stock. Our boats are getting detailed! Boat chiefs galore! Only a couple years ago the Tuesday Crew was about half a dozen volunteers. Today on most Tuesdays there are as many as 20 members on docks. Likewise the boat chiefs that cannot participate on Tuesdays has swelled substantially. IQCs are back! Small boat and keelboat sailing Instructor Qualification Clinics have added a half

dozen certified instructors to FYC s. We plan on holding several IQCs of beginning, intermediate and advanced levels next year. More females! When I joined FYC six years ago we had only one active woman sailor. Today woman are everywhere in the club; boat chiefs, instructors, cruisers, racers, board members (plural even!), and other leadership roles. A terrific trend! More couples! Again a few years ago we had only one or two. Today we have dozens. A family that sails together can have a ball! Greater diversity! Fairwind continues to attract more members from different backgrounds, communities, and generations. Another trend that I look forward to see increasing! Bigger boats! We acquired the Catalina 400 and 38 the year before. But as commissioning and training have been completed more and more members are using these beasts! More racing! More and more Fairwind members can be spotted racing club boats and crewing on other boats. Our Monday night Wave races have developed a strong following many Mondays the racers had to double up! Two of our boats placed first in class in the Newport-Ensenada Race! And we even managed to get six entries in the Midwinter Regatta Hobie Wave class! More group charters! Members have filed amazing reports from cruising Belize, Tahiti, Croatia, Fiji, Antigua, the BVIs, Tonga, Hawaii and more WHAT LIES AHEAD? Next year presents some interesting challenges and awesome opportunities: We will be moving! Sometime in 2007 we will move the C basin fleet to new 35 slips in B basin. The dock we will be on has only leeward slips. We will have at least eight of the ten berths on the dock. We are discussing getting the remaining two slips and the end tie too. It will feel more clubby on the docks! Of course there will be changes mostly for the better. Parking, keys, rules will be different. And, best of all, we will have new, modern heads! Oxnard needs to take-off! We need to attract more locals. We also need to launch a new kids program. We need to grow a firm presence in Channel Islands Harbor. We need to arrange weekly basic sailing lessons so that new members can move into the small boat class. Page 2 We need to plan to replace Fairwind 30. We need to look forward to what s next. With 35 slips just around the corner we will have more choices to consider. We need to keep building our certified instructor roster. We will schedule more IQCs. I am optimistic that Fairwind will win the SCYA Club of the Year award. Let s go for it again! MDR PARK WORKSHOP NOV. 15 The Department of Beaches and Harbors will be holding a public planning workshop on how to develop Burton Chace Park. The workshop will Wednesday, November 15, 6:30 pm, at the community room in the park. They plan on doubling the size of the park. See chaceparkworkshop pdf Will you please consider attending? A strong showing of Fairwind members will be important. What should be noted? There should be a community sailing center in the park. It should be an independent non-profit. Existing sailing and rowing clubs should have facilities and slips for their programs. Most local governments across the nation support community sailing and boating programs, only in Marina del Rey are programs not provided public support. Programs like UCLA, Fairwind, MdR Outrigger Canoe Club, the LA Rowing Club, and others bring thousands of people to Marina del Rey. They are very cost effective. With the exception of UCLA none of them use taxpayer funds to pay staff or buy equipment. These programs should be supported by providing facilities like a boathouse, storage, and/or slips for free. We need more facilities for all boaters. There should be additional head pump out facilities at Burton Chace Park. The California Department of Boating and Waterways will pay for buying and installing head pump outs. Federal and state guidelines indicate that there should be one pump-out for every boats. That would mean as many as 20 in MdR instead of the handful we have now. Would you build a stadium and not provide adequate rest rooms and drinking fountains? Of course not! MdR does not have a dump station (for port-a-potties), a bilge water pump out, or a decent hazardous household waste program. How about a swimming pool? Some locals oppose this idea, but I think that it will attract families that do not use the park. It will be valuable for capsize recovery training for our kids programs and swimming lessons

Thursdays after school. This program is volunteer run and needs help. Please contact Adam Colson at LIST We have most members on an list. This will allow the Club to send you updates and news between newsletters. If you are not receiving s, please Bob Baron at He will add you to the list. FLEET CAPTAIN S LOG By Jenson Crawford UPDATED ROSTERS for kids that cannot sail until they learn to swim. Some say it will bring the wrong element to MdR. Others say it is too cold for a pool in MdR. I believe that more communities should use Marina del Rey it was built with tax dollars from everybody not just the locals. Too cold? Cal YC, Del Rey YC, and Marina City Club all have pools that are used heavily! MIDWINTER REGATTA Start planning now to participate in the SCYA Midwinter regatta on President s Day weekend, February 17 and 18. We need eight entries to earn the maximum Club of the Year points. Please consider racing our Hobie Waves, our keelboats in cruising class, or the F-27 in ORCA class. All of these races are oneday events. NSPS IN NEW ORLEANS The 2007 US SAILING National Sailing Programs Symposium (NSPS) is set for New Orleans January 17 21, The NSPS attracts program leaders from a couple hundred community sailing programs like Fairwind from across the nation and is awesome. Please consider attending! More information is at AFTER SCHOOL SAILING NEEDS VOLUNTEERS The FYC Junior sailing program resumes again in October. Members of the Boys and Girls Club of Venice will be sailing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Updated rosters are available in the members section of the web site ( roster.html) and in the administration dock box. AND FAX NUMBER REMINDER As of October 1 st, I took office as Fleet Captain, and Hartmut took office as Treasurer. Just a reminder that some of the addresses and Fax numbers we ve been using have changed. Elayne remains as Vice- Commodore, but her has changed. Hartmut s treasurer@fairwind.org Jenson s fleetcaptain@fairwind.org Elayne s vice-commodore@fairwind.org Fax number for training and checkout forms: (866) ISLAND SIDE TRAINING We started training the trainers on Island Side on Saturday October 28. Congratulations to Rosalie Bostick, the first instructor to check out on Island Side in the Train-the-Trainer program. We ll continue training and checking out our mid- and large-boat instructors for four weeks. The following four weeks will be for training and checking out members at the mid- and large-boat levels, as well as continuing to train and check out mid-size instructors. During these eight weeks, Island Side may only be reserved and used for training; Fred has offered us an unprecedented opportunity to get members checked out on Island Side before she is fully commissioned. Page 3

INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATION CLINICS Fairwind held an ASA 201 Instructor Qualification Clinic (IQC) at the end of October; as a result, Fairwind has 5 more ASA Basic Keelboat Instructors! See the article by Margaret Pommert for details on the IQC. We ll be holding another 201 IQC early next year, tentatively scheduled for March, and we are discussing when we will hold IQC s for the 203, 204, 205 and other levels. If you re an experienced sailor and are interested in becoming an ASA Instructor, please me at FleetCaptain@fairwind.org. Watch this space for more information about upcoming IQC s. UPDATED INSTRUCTOR LIST The updated instructor list is available in the members section of the web site ( members/instructors.html), including the new additions from the October IQC. Find an instructor, set up a time to train, and get out on the water. ASA CHALLENGES As an ASA school, Fairwind allows members to challenge the ASA certifications, when they have the knowledge and experience equivalent to taking an ASA course. The requirements for each certification are in your ASA logbook, or at the ASA website. If you ve studied the written material, have spent enough time on the water to feel confident with the hands-on sailing requirements, and would like to challenge an ASA certification, please let me know and we ll set up a challenge. I ll publish information in the newsletter about upcoming ASA challenges. FYC CALENDAR ON THE WEBSITE The FYC Calendar is now on the website. See the links at the bottom of the member s page. If you have anything that you d like to see on the calendar, please me at FleetCaptain@fairwind.org. AN OVERVIEW OF FYC RESERVATION AND CHECKOUT RULES A big thank you goes out to Deanna Rozeira for researching and writing almost all of this section. As a refresher, particularly for our newest members, please take note of the published reservation and checkout rules for our club: The classifications for membership consist of the following: Small boats, Medium Boats and Large Boats. This classification system is key to each member s rights, privileges and responsibilities in the club, and in determining member dues and bonds. Fees, dues and bonds are outlined in Section II of the Standing Rules of FYC; the current on-line and hard copy versions due not yet reflect all the changes approved by the board. The current fees, dues and bonds are as follows: DUES REQUIREMENTS Boat level Small Boats checked out checked out Medium Boats Large Boats Dues Schedule $99.00 per quarter when $60.00 per quarter when not $ per quarter $ per quarter BOND REQUIREMENTS Boat Level Small Boats Medium Boats Trimaran Large Boats Bond Schedule $ total $ total $ total $1,000 total Section II, Item B, of the Standing Rules states covers the entry fee for membership is $100, it is however currently $200, plus quarterly dues for the boat level at which the member is joining FYC. Note that all members must enter the club at the small boat level and go through the checkout process for each level. To move to the medium or large boat level, a member must submit a move up request with the additional bond for the new level. When the move up is approved, the member shall start paying the dues and bonds of that next level starting with the check-out or the next succeeding quarter, whichever comes first. Dues for a portion of a quarter shall be paid on a pro-rata basis, rounded off to the nearest month. Members may request to move up to a higher level at any time but may drop down a level only on July 1 st. No member may skipper a boat in a level higher than the one for which he/she pays. The reservations process is outlined in Section III in the FYC Standing Rules. Item A states that any member who reserves a boat and is more than 30 minutes late, loses his/her right to the reservations should another (Continued on page 8) Page 4

(Continued from page 4) member be there to take the boat out. As a matter of courtesy, please call the member with the reservation before taking a boat if the member is late. Item B outlines telephone reservations, which cover the period from Saturday to the following Friday immediately following the current week during which reservations were made. For on-line reservations, refer to your welcome letter from the Fleet Captain, which states that the online reservations system is a members only area, with forms and information to download, as well as other useful information. Each new member is given a username and password for entry onto the website to make reservations and gain access to all FYC materials, calendars, newsletters, etc. Note: though not listed in current documentation, our website is: fairwind.org. The Fleet Captain explains that in order to make your online reservations, each member is assigned a unique username and password. Please note that, although not specified, for new members who are classified as Not Checked Out (NCO) these online reservations are limited to signing up for training or crewing on a boat that has been reserved by a member qualified to signout that particular boat, in other words, no NCO member can reserve a boat online (or by telephone or at dockside). The board has recently changed new member usernames and password for access to better identify them as NCO members. As noted in the By Laws, Section IV, All Regular Members shall have the right to use The Club boats for which they are checked out and paying the applicable dues, subject to the Standing Rules established by the Club. Please read this to mean not just physical use of the boat, but also that an NCO member cannot make reservations even if the boat is to be skippered by a qualified, checked-out skipper for that particular boat. become a small boat level member, the NCO member must complete training and pass a checkout for a small boat, as well as pass the written portion of the ASA 101 exam. TRAINING ON MEDIUM BOATS Before being eligible to move up to begin training at the medium boat level, a member must be checked out on at least two small boats, log at least 30 hours as skipper at the small boat level (Kayaks and Hobie Waves do not count toward this 30 hours) and have passed two board approved courses (most often ASA 101 and 105). Members must train and check out on an outboardequipped medium boat (Hunter 26.5 Collective Effort) before checking out on medium boats with inboard engines. Members must be checked out and logged 30 hours as skipper on the Catalina 270 (Zephyr) before beginning training on the Catalina 28 (Island Side). The F-27 trimaran (Sea Wing) is considered a medium boat, but it has a special bond as noted above. Sea Wing may not be the first medium boat that a member checks out on. TRAINING ON LARGE BOATS To be eligible to move up to begin training at the large boat level, a member must be checked out on at least two medium boats, and have logged at least 60 hours as skipper at the medium boat level. Training at the large boat level starts with the Catalina 30 (Fairwind 30). Members must complete checkout on the Fairwind 30 before beginning training on the Catalina 30 Mk III (Mark III). Members must log 60 hours as skipper on the Mark III before beginning training on either the Catalina 38 (Happy Ours) or the Catalina 400 (Angelsea). NCO members can only reserve space on a boat as a crewmember or for training on a boat that has been designated reserved for training or is seeking crew. Note that the required hours to be logged as skipper are hours under way, not hours away from the dock. For example if a member takes the Mark III to Catalina for the weekend, the hours moored or anchored do not count toward the hours skippered, only the hours motoring or sailing. Members can make their way up the ranks of boating levels as follows: USE IT OR LOSE IT TRAINING ON SMALL BOATS NCO members must first train on the small boats, specifically starting with the G22 or one of the Capri 14.2K s, through instruction by FYC instructors. To Page 8 Any member who has not skippered a minimum of four hours on his/her boat level in any 12-month period shall lose sailing privileges until checked out again the Fleet Captain or his/her appointee.

Note: Current posted Standing Rules state that a member may not train at a higher boat level until an opening exists or is imminent in said level, as determined by the Membership Chairperson (Vice Commodore). A maximum of 20 regular members per boat is permitted at the small boat level; a maximum of 16 regular members is permitted at the medium and large boat levels, total maximum regular membership to be 124 (Note: this has since been upgraded). Again, particularly new members, refer to your FYC Standing Rules, By Laws and Handbook. If ever in doubt about these or any procedure or rule, do not hesitate to ask any board member for clarification. VICE COMMODORE S REPORT I am happy to announce that our club continues to grow (190 members strong!!), and the mentorship program seems to be working GREAT!!! Thank you to those who have volunteered to be mentors!!! I have received more checkout forms during the month of October than any other month since I took office last year. That means everyone is working hard at training and checking out and many members are moving up to the next boat level. We have three new members to introduce at the Board/Membership meeting this month who will need mentors to help set them on the right track to get rolling with their training. Please attend the membership meeting this month and take a new member under your wing. It is so much fun to meet these sailors and make new friends. I look forward to giving you a full membership report at this months meeting. Elayne White, Vice Commodore DON T BE SHOCKED! I have been contacted by several people and have seen a number of write-ups in the 270 logs about skippers having problems when connecting to shore power. Here is some information you will find helpful. The 270, being one of our newer boats, has an electrical system that includes a GFI. GFI stands for Ground Fault Interrupter. It is an electrical device that you will find in all newer electrical outlets in homes, apartments, RVs, etc. that are near a source of water. Electricity and water are dangerous together. If you should accidentally (or, yikes, on purpose!) drop a plugged in electrical appliance into a sink or bathtub filled with water it will almost instantly trip a breaker built into the 120V outlet and thereby prevent a person or pet from being electrocuted or severely injured. This device is very effective and has saved innumerable lives. It is so sensitive that if you disconnect the shore power cord from the boat s inboard outlet before disconnecting it from the dock box outlet first it will almost always trip this breaker. The same thing will happen if you connect the shore power at the dock box before you connect it at the boat. This will of course prevent the 120V shore power supply from running the battery chargers as well as any onboard appliances such as the space heater and the handheld vacuum cleaner charger from operating. To help alert you to this condition I have installed a 120V nightlight on the port side above the quarter berth. When shore power is properly connected to the boat this night-light will be on unless the bulb is burnt out (there are spare bulbs in the container on the port side shelf). If the light does not come on the most likely cause is that the GFI was tripped. You can simply reset it by pressing the red button in the center of the 120V outlet on the wooden panel to the right and above the stove area. The nightlight should come on indicating shore power has been established. However, to prevent the GFI from tripping in the first place, always: WHEN LEAVING THE SLIP: Disconnect the shore power at the dock box first before disconnecting it from the boat. WHEN RETURNING: Always connect the shore power cord to the boat first and then connect it at the dock box last. Also, always make sure that the power cord is not hanging in the water. There is always a possibility that there is a cut in the cord cover allowing electricity to run through the water near the boat. This can be lethal to anyone in the water near the boat and would also be a cause of electrolysis in our boat and those surrounding it. There are some other electrical issues not addressed here. As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this or any other questions you have about our boat. Gus van Driel Ass t Boat Chief-Catalina 270 Page 9

RECIPE FOR SAILING HEAVEN: ANACAPA ON ANGELSEA WITH DOLPHINS Take a pinch of beautiful fall weather, stir in some seductive seas, then add the sailing vessel Angelsea and the enchanting Island Anacapa. Mix briskly with wind and sails and, for extra fun, pour in a pod or three of dolphins. And don't forget the Fairwind members! Heavenly! selves---and Angelsea and Freedom Too can take you there---the gateway to the Northern Channel Islands of Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and for the more adventurous, San Miguel and Santa Barbara Islands. Channel Islands sailing is among the best anywhere! Going to Anacapa Island and back from Channel Islands Harbor is a fabulous daysail. The Island is positioned a mere 10 miles outside of the Harbor which makes it a great daysail destination. A pod of dolphins can sometimes be seen, which is great fun! Watch them jump in the air and ride the bow wake of the boat! These photos were taken by Paul Antico on a recent daysail to Anacapa on Angelsea with FYC members Marc Levine and Jen Huntzicker. The busy, crowded city life fades away as the expanse of the ocean helps us remember the peace of our inner Thanks to the efforts of Dave Lumian, Elayne White, and Warren Smith Fairwind has 5 new American Sailing Association (ASA) certified Basic Keelboat Instructors (ASA 101). As a certified Instructor Evaluator for ASA, Dave organized a two and a half day Instructor Qualification Clinic (IQC) the last weekend of October. Twelve local instructor candidates were certified, including Ken Murray, Gilbert Tseng, Jenson Crawford, Steven Mandel, and Margaret Pommert from Fairwind. A SUCCESSFUL IQC During the IQC, candidates were tested on their sailing knowledge through an extensive written exam. Our sailing skills were tested through an on-the-water single-handed sailing test on the Fairwind Solings. Dave, Elayne, and Warren emphasized that a good sailing instructor must be able to teach as well as sail. Page 10

mailing list for the group a month before the exam, so that we could share questions and study materials, and organize a number of study and practice sessions. Dave prepared a study guide, and met with the group several times ahead of the exam to clarify what was expected of us and to help focus each individual s preparations. Many of us met several times in small study groups. The weekend before the exam, the entire group got together again to study, practice on the water, and ask last minute questions. We were able to enjoy the use of the SMWYC meeting room and dock facilities for both weekends, thanks to Dave and our other friends at SMWYC! Dave and the 12 candidates, 5 from Fairwind. So the clinic also involved demonstrations of both classroom and on-the-water teaching skills. Dave taught us how to tailor our instructing techniques to match the learning styles of our students and make the learning process more fun. Each candidate took turns teaching a topic to the rest of the class, using a variety of innovative and interesting techniques. For example, Ken Murray, knot master, entertained us and taught us a very useful version of tying the Bowline. (Don t miss a chance to have Ken teach you knots; he s great at it and no matter how many you know he s sure to have one you ll be happy to add to your arsenal!) Dave told us that it is common for only 50% of instructor candidates to pass the IQC the first time. It was not by chance that our entire group of 12 instructor candidates passed the exam. As with so much in sailing, preparation was the key. Jensen organized a Jenson's single handed test. The IQC was challenging, but a very fun experience. One of the best parts was getting to know the other instructor candidates outside of Fairwind. Those of you at the last workday may have met one of them, Mike Tarrant. Mike is an excellent sailing instructor, and hopefully one of our newest members, so please welcome him! Thanks again to Dave, Elayne and Warren, and congratulations to our new Basic Keelboat instructors! The Fairwind Yacht Club Newsletter is published monthly, Jan. Nov. Submissions are accepted on a space available basis. Deadline for publication is workday. To send me a contribution, you may (in order of preference): it to me at redbaron@mycondo.net Elayne intimidating poor Ken in the single-handed tes. Mail hard copy to the editor Page 11
